WHAT THIS BOOK IS FOR
Students have generally found biology a difficult subject to understand and learn. Despite the publication of hundreds of textbooks in this field, each...

Useful for the DAT.......2007-09-06
Bought this for DAT preparation. Found it to be very useful since that Bio on the DAT is becoming progressively more difficult. Ended up doing very well in Bio on the DAT (not just due to this book but this book did help a lot).
This made studying biology easier........2005-02-17
All in all a very good book. I used this book last two semesters for my biology classes and found it very helpful. It explained difficult concepts like what I read in my college textbook in an easier way. If you want great test preparation questions to learn from, I highly recommend getting which is also on amazon--The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
(Topics: Organization of Living Things & Chemistry of Life, Structure and Function of the Cell and Energy Pathways, Reproduction, and Heredity, Genetics) Volume 1

These four books helped me get excellent grades in my college biology classes.
A Must For Every Biology Student.......2003-03-15
For the buck, the best aid that you'll get in studying biology. Books like Campbell are good, but they cost over twice as much, and don't tell you as much. The Biology Problem Solver basically covers every bit about Biology, in a very organized fashion. It's question and answer format helps direct one's queries and thoughts. Sections that I find particularly interesting, like on ecology and invertebrates, I learned a good deal more about. Sections I find less interesting, like cellular and molecular biology, were illuminating and very easy to understand. I have particularly enjoyed the evolutionary diagrams and taxonomic lists at the end of the text. When I needed to study in undergrad, this book was invaluable, and the sample tests at the end helped to amply prepare me. Today when I have a question about Biology, I turn to this text first for in-depth coverage.
The BIology Problem Solver.......2000-04-02
A well organized review material for undergrad levelled general biology. Different from heavy volumed, too broadly covered other biology textbooks, this book focuses on important topics and guides from easy questions to challenged ones. Especially, for the biological functional aspects, this book allows lot of portion and makes it more efficient to get high scores in exams. I studied this book with Campbell's Biology (4th ed.) to prepare GRE Subject test and got over 95% score two years ago.
Highly recommendable biology book to summarize overall course works and prepare for any undergrad level-biology exams. The only drawback of this book is the relatively weak coverage of modern molecular biology section.

Book Description
Most research in the life sciences involves a core set of molecular-based equipment and methods, for which there is no shortage of step-by-step protocols. Nonetheless, there remains an exceedingly high number of inquiries placed to commercial technical support groups, especially regarding problems.
Molecular Biology Problem Solver: A Laboratory Guide asks the reader to consider crucial questions, such as:
- Have you selected the most appropriate research strategy?
- Have you identified the issues critical to your successful application of a technique?
- Are you familiar with the limitations of a given technique?
- When should common procedural rules of thumb not be applied?
- What strategies could you apply to resolve a problem?
A unique question-based format reviews common assumptions and laboratory practices, with the aim of offering a firm understanding of how techniques and procedures work, as well as how to avoid problems. Some major issues explored by the book's expert contributors include:
- Working safely with biological samples and radioactive materials
- DNA and RNA purification
- PCR
- Protein and nucleid acid hybridization
- Prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems
- Properly using and maintaining laboratory equipment
Book Description
Feared, revered, and often misunderstood, venomous snakes have been a source of legend and nightmare since time immemorial. In this comprehensive volume, author Mark O'Shea has combined expertly written, in-depth descriptions of the world's common and exotic venomous snakes, highlighted by previously unpublished gripping accounts of his adventures with snakes, including personal observations and several serious snakebite episodes.
The book begins with a description of the anatomies of venomous snakes, along with their diversity and distribution. Also included is a unique in-depth look at the various types of snake venom and the ways that each type attacks the body. A section on anti-venom, including thoughts on the looming anti-venom crisis, is also presented. Information on the adaptations of ocean-dwelling snakes and issues of snake conservation as well as an examination of venomous lizards follow.
From bamboo pitvipers to deep-diving seasnakes, and from adders and asps to terciopelos and the massasaugas, this book takes an original approach to examining these enthralling creatures. Rather than the typical taxonomic categorization, the snakes are grouped by geographic location: the Americas, Africa, Eurasia, Tropical Asia, Australasia, and the Oceans. Each section is illustrated with stunning and rare pictures, many of which were taken by the author himself.
Suitable for professional snake handlers and armchair herpetologists alike, this extremely accessible book is an enthusiastic celebration of the diversity and beauty of venomous snakes worldwide.
- Explores the secret world of venomous snakes, revealing their habitats, characteristics, and hunting and feeding behaviors
- Contains thrilling details of O'Shea's own encounters with snakes
- Provides detailed information on venomous snake diversity, venom types, and conservation
- Includes a world map illustrating venomous snake distribution and detailed accounts of more than 170 species
- Features over 150 full-color photographs, many of them of extremely rare species
Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures, but..........2006-11-06
This book has some really good photos, but is more of a travelogue than a good source of information on venomous snakes. A fun read with pretty pictures. Look elsewhere for in-depth information.
A good book.......2005-11-02
Overall, this is a pretty good book. The photographs are what make it great. The text is informative, though not very techincal, so if you are looking for a more in-depth book, this may not be what you are looking for. However, for the price it is well worth it.
Average customer rating:
- Superb Photographs
- This book lacks bite!
- Good, but needed more detail
- An often too simplistic general overview of venomous snakes.

Superb Photographs.......2007-08-29
A well-assembled, passionate, generalist overview of venomous snakes. But the pictures! Over 200 pages of glossy photographs that convey a ton of information and a lot of drama.
This book lacks bite!.......2000-04-15
I bought this book to add to my reptile library and to use a reference. Before my trip to the jungles of Costa Rica, I thought I'd read up on some of the more onery snakes that I might encounter, such as the bushmaster and fer-de-lance. Not only were there no pictures or information on the bushmaster, it wasn't even listed in the index! As for the fer-de-lance, there was a single picture but no information. I have since read the entire book, and have found it to be extremely lacking in useful species-specific information. The chapter titled "A Few Interesting Species" is very short (about 30 pages), not to mention it excludes some fairly important species! For the beginning enthusiast who just wants a general overview, this would be a good place to start, but don't let your education stop here! The book's only redeeming qualities for me were some nice glossy photos and the anecdotes written by herpetologists with snake bite or near miss experiences.
Good, but needed more detail.......1999-08-06
This was a good introductory book but did not go into enough detail for my taste.I did like the anecdotes and the pictures were great.
An often too simplistic general overview of venomous snakes........1999-04-19
This book provides a basic general overview that is good, but is geared towards the inexperienced snake enthusiast and does not get into depth on any subject. Ironically, the subject that is covered in most depth is mouse breeding. That space could have given room to more thorough species descriptions covering most genera. Also, too many photos that have been seen elsewhere in TFH Books.

Excelent.......2007-08-23
Outstanding book, both for advanced kendoists and begginers. Pay close attention to everything those two authors and masters kendoists have written and you'll not regret.
on my second copy.. . .......2005-03-20
nothing can replace dojo when it comes to learning kendo, however, this book provides good over view about kendo. i do have number of different kendo books in my collection at this point.. however, this was my first book in english on kendo, and i still find it endearing.
Some excellent history.......2004-02-21
This is a reprint of the book originally published in 1964, if I remember correctly, and is definitely something of a classic, since there were few books available in the U.S. on the art of kendo at that time.
I read this book mainly for the history of kendo, in order to supplement the reading I'm doing on the history of iai, as I am mainly an iaido practitioner rather than a kendo-ka. I'd recently read Karl Friday's Legacies of the Sword, a scholarly work by an American professor of Japanese history on iaido, much of it impressively written from original Japanese sources. It was quite detailed as far as the history and philosophy of Kashima-Shinryu iaido goes, but other styles get discussed too, such as Jikishin Kage-ryu and Yagyu Shinkage-ryu. However, much of the information is relevant to other styles as well. But it was primarily, as I said, on iai, so I wanted to get some background in the kendo as well. I mention it because it would be a good book to read after this one. Just be advised, if you're familiar with Dave Lowry's lively and entertaining books on iaido, this is truly a academic tome, and the style is much denser and dryer than Lowry's works, but it's worth reading for the exhaustive detail and scholarship that went into it. The author says that it was the product of 20 years of research, and it shows.
I can't comment on the technical aspects of the kendo forms and techniques, but I thought the history was excellent despite a few things I found far-fetched, such as the author's mentioning of 9-foot swords. I note one of the other reviewers commented on this too, and he also had a problem with some of the author's facts on European armor. However, baring a few problems like that, I thought this chapter was excellent as a good introductory history and it contained much good information on many of the old kendo schools and the most famous masters, and dozens of famous masters are discussed along with the styles they originated, along with their exploits and some of the philosophy too. There still aren't many books discussing the history of iaido and kendo in English in much detail, and this chapter on the history is one of the better ones I've seen so far.
THERE'S NO SUBSTITUTE YET........2001-06-22
This book, along with Fundamental Kendo (of the Zen Nihon Kendo Remmei) are still the most important kendo books around. Now, as we all know, Fundamental Kendo is out of print, so you should at least own a copy of this one.
A good beginning to learning the art of Kendo.......2001-04-11
This book is a very good introduction to the art and sport of Kendo. It contains a full description of all techniques a beginner will be faced with as well as some very good suggestions for methods of practice, solo and with others. I do like the fact that the advanced competitive techniques are listed, but they are given very little description, forcing the owner of this book to put it down after about a year of use alongside work in the dojo. The glossary is excellent and useful as well as the introduction to bogu(armour), the shinai(bamboo sword) and the essentials of etiquette and competition. This book, however, completely lacks information about the kata, which are important for grading and it lacks (as I said before) adequate description of advanced techniques, and stances. I found the section on history, which takes up about a third of the book, to be colourful, interesting, and well condensed, but containing useless comparisons between samurai and knight, and misinformation about knights(i.e. crusaders wielding 9 foot longswords [implicitly in one hand!]),a comparison of stances with knights which is completely untenable(i.e. the knight moved body and sword together [how can one generalize like this, especially without any reference to European medieval fighting manuals, which show something quite different?]) and that Japanese armour was not "burdensome" like European plate. What does "burdensome" mean when one is trying to avoid death by deflecting arrows and other sharp objects with one's armour and when most soldiers wore only partial suits of plate supplementing it with other materials? These historical inaccuracies aside, the book gives the reader an excellent idea of what to expect in the dojo, and an excellent resource aid for practice during the first stages of learning. Since other more complete books on the subject are now available, I recommend this book to someone who wants a friendly, very thorough, understandable and clear introduction to the martial art which will give the reader a good grounding in all basic elements. But, if the reader wants a complete manual to last in usefulness beyond the basics and into medium and higher-level play, that reader would be advised to look elsewhere.
Book Description
This is the first edition of the Oxford Latin Desk Dictionary, offering essential coverage of Latin words and grammar, as well as extra information on Roman history and culture. It takes account of the latest research into Latin, and is designed specifically to fit the needs of today's
student. It covers over 46,000 words and phrases, including additions from the writings of Plautus and Terence, and from the study of Silver Latin. Common irregular verb parts are given as headwords for greater clarity, and boxed notes provide help with language usage, and with difficult words and
constructions.
There are detailed appendices on historical, mythological, and geographical names, as well as sections on money, weights and measures, dates, and times, poetic meter, and medieval Latin. With a timeline of important dates, and biographies on Roman writers, this edition is packed with interesting and
essential information on Roman history and culture.
Also with pronunciation help and a guide to Latin grammar, this compact and affordable dictionary is a necessity for all students and adult-learners of Latin.
Customer Reviews:
You have to know Latin grammar to use this dictionary.......2006-05-06
You have to know Latin grammar to use this dictionary. Perfectly simple words like 'dans' and 'ejus' are not included -- you have to know what the roots are to look them up. A good introduction to grammar is included, but for those that do not want to take the time to brush up it would be MUCH more useful if all word forms were included with cross-reference to the roots.
it's just fine.......2006-03-24
This dictionary is just fine for the beginning and intermediate student. For those of you who need references to ancient works look to The Unabridged Oxford or Lewis and Short (both of which are very expensive), or Cassell's (which is what I used in advanced unniversity-level Latin). The person who gave the dictionary one star obviously bought the wrong book. Latin students know that facto comes from the verb facio. Books of Latin phrases that appear in the modern world are all over the place, and should not be confused with a dictionary.
Great Modern Latin Dictionary!.......2006-02-21
I found this to be a really helpful dictionary. The size and price are perfect for the beginning to intermediate Latin student, and the "Latin to English" translations have been updated by the editors to conform to modern the understanding of words. It sure beats using older Latin dictionaries (such as Lewis' "Elementary Latin Dictionary," last updated in 1888 and still used in my undergraduate college) which requires you to translate the Latin word, and THEN translate the archaic Victorian words to something more contemporary.
This dictionary gets 4 stars instead of 5 only because the "English to Latin" part was not updated, and still reflects Latin scholarship from over 100 years ago. Granted, most people today with the exception of unversity students will not be writing much original Latin prose, but it is nice to have some updating just for studying.
A word regarding the gentleman whom gave this dictionary 1 star -- the dictionary does not include phrases. However, the dictionary does have great extra features including a complete Latin Grammar, a list of Roman weights and measures, and some other neat sections relating to classic literature. Anyone who has even a rudimentary knowledge of Latin will have no troubles whatsoever with translating any basic Latin phrases they may encounter.
Ispa Scientia Potestas Est!
Useless for Latin phrases.......2005-11-21
I purchased this dictionary for Latin phrases, because it says "Over 100,000 words, phrases, and translations." I soon recognized that this dictionary is simply for "words." For instance, if you would like to know the meaning of "ipso facto," you cannot find the phrase in this dictionary, First, you need to know that "ipso" comes from "ipse" which is the word you can find in this dictionary. There is no "ipso" in this dictionary. No "facto," either. This dictionary is useless for Latin phrases, unless you already have basic knowledge of Latin. Then, why would you need this kind of compact dictionary? I rate this dictionary with 1 star, because "Over 100,000 words, phrases, and translations" is misleading.
Book Description

You'll hear what Strat players have to say about their instrument, their music and each other. The Fender Stratocaster both reflects and influences popular culture worldwide. The Stratocaster Chronicles focuses on the people who brought it into the world, the designers and builders who refined it, and the players who have taken it from there.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Read for any Fender Fan.......2007-07-23
This is an excellent overview of not only the founding of Fender Electric Instrument Company in Fullerton, CA, but an accurate and honest chronology of how the world's most recognizeable guitar was built and marketed, as well as the players around the world who made it's sound their own. Great pictures of many vintage models, and many design differences and changes through the years are documented. For those not grey in the temples enough to have lived it, the CD provides some fabulous sounds of early Strat players at the birth of rock music in the late 50's. Highly recommended!!!
A book just as good as the instrument .......2007-05-24
The Stratocaster Chronicles, truly does Fender guitars the justice of explaining the history and facts of such fine instruments! Must read for Fender fans!
Best of the Stratocaster books.......2007-05-07
Filled with the facts you need to know about this famous guitar and its inventor, C.L. Fender, but it is a good read, also. Tom Wheeler is probably the best of the guitar book authors. I highly recommend any of his books.
Great book.......2007-01-15
Very high quality book on the strat. Gives you everything you wanted to know about the strat, including large clear color pictures. The history of the development is very interesting, and the accompanying CD is a great touch as well. Way too much to read in 1 or 2 sit downs. This is a much longer undertaking. A great coffee table addition.
"The Fender's Book".......2007-01-10
I really liked this book. It isn't a simple guitar's book. Who want the best Fender's book, it's the choice.
