5 out of 5 stars Global/local poetics reign splendidly in this collection..........2003-02-08

Although this book based on a set of talks at SUNY Binghampton in 1989 has been hard to get (except in library collections), its impact has been instant and abiding: the collection is still being used by cultural critics and social science scholars from England to Australia and Taiwan, as I found out during my visit there as National Science fellow in 1995 where it was being used to help map cosmopolitan-yet- local strategies of "Asian/Pacific Cultural Studies."

Anthony King's collection, with a stunning and much-cited essay on transnational and ethnic complications of cultural identity in England by Stuart Hall called "The Local and the Global: Globalization and Ethnicity," on the one hand, and rather more homogenizing and predictable mappings of the capitalist culture of globalization by major sociologists like Immanuel Wallerstein and Rowland Robertson on the other, opens up the problematics of mapping global and local interactions, flows, contradictions, and synergies. King's own solid scholarship inquiring into the colonial infrastructures of transnationalizing global cities gave him a solid base on which to construct such cultural and ideological dialogues across disciplines and areas, and the collection remains a site where critical dialogue and trans-disciplinary interaction did take place.

In sum, the collection shows how some emerging new sensibility of "global paradox" complicates the globsl/local power of the local, sub-national, ethnic, and tribal to alter the seamless workings of global domination and transnational restructuration. Noteworthy in the collection, as well, are powerful critiques of reigning globalization models by Ulf Hannerz ("Scenarios for Peripheral Cultures") and an internal critique of the whole collection by Barbara Abou-El-Haj, who shrewdly remarks of such models (as theorized by the keynote speakers in the collection, Hall and Wallerstein), "Our ambition to do equal justice to the global and local is limited at the outset by our failures to generate a comparative language beyond the set of tiny binaries which reproduce the global regime in the very attempt to eviscerate it: center/periphery, core/periphery, western/non-western, developed/developing, etc."

This trans-disciplinary way of theorizing and representing global/local interactions called for in the collection does comprise what Abou-El-Haj notes is "a qualitative step forward." Subsequent collections of national/transnational interaction like Donald Pease and Amy Kaplan, eds., Culture of United States Imperialism (Duke University Press, 1993) and Inderpal Grewal and Caren Kaplan, eds., Scattered Hegemonies: Postmodernity and Transnational Feminist Practices (Minnesota UP, 1994) have been working out the far-reaching implications of these new global/local discourses and frames.

Book Description

Companies see it over and over again. There are signs of trouble in the organization: conflict, turnover, low morale, lack of motivation, status quo bureaucracy. So a consultant comes in with a series of recommendations. Managers and employees rally around a vision of the way things could be. The consultants leave and their report sits on the shelf. Nothing happens. Cynicism rises. Morale plummets. Managers argue. Another consultant creates a new plan that looks a lot like the old one with a new cover and a new name. And still nothing happens.

Leadership knows something is seriously wrong, but they can't see it. Something unidentified and insidious is lurking in the shadows like a "thing in the bushes" and it has the organization in a death grip. It hates change. It's the very thing that managers, consultants, employees, and board members all avoid. Its presence is palpable but nobody knows what to do about it. Avoiding it will kill the company. Facing it honestly and dealing with it unleashes a power that will propel an organization into a new realm. But it takes courage to face The Thing in the Bushes.

Even the best-run companies with great products, talented personnel, and superior systems can flounder if they are not relationally healthy. Companies today face "people" issues that didn't exist only a decade ago. Yet those same issues are often ignored and left prowling, waiting to destroy the company. Ford and Osterhaus show business leaders how to face "The Thing in the Bushes" and turn it into a competitive advantage for their company.

4 out of 5 stars Wish I Had Read It Years Ago.......2001-06-07

I wish I had read this book years ago. For those who want to be able to effectively deal with the challenges of working in an organization, this book can be a great overview. While it is almost an advertisement for the firm which the authors own which helps troubled firms, it can also serve -- if read and studied very carefully -- as a great way to develop one's own approach to office politics, and the myriad complexities of trying to fit in and advance within a big, competitive business work group. Book repeats things but also mentions that thoughts need to be repeated and repeated to be correctly and fully learned.

    Book Description

For centuries biologists have tried to understand the underpinnings of avian migration: where birds go and why, why some migrate and some do not, how they adapt to a changing environment, and how migratory systems evolve. Twenty-five years ago the answers to many of these questions were addressed by a collection of migration experts in Keast and Morton's classic work Migrant Birds in the Neotropics. In 1992, Hagan and Johnston published a follow-up book, Ecology and Conservation of Neotropical Migrant Landbirds.

In Birds of Two Worlds Russell Greenberg and Peter Marra bring together the world's experts on avian migration to discuss its ecology and evolution. The contributors move the discussion of migration to a global stage, looking at all avian migration systems and delving deeper into the evolutionary foundations of migratory behavior. Readers interested in the biology, behavior, ecology, and evolution of birds have waited a decade to see a worthy successor to the earlier classics. Birds of Two Worlds will complete the trilogy and become indispensable for ornithologists, evolutionary biologists, serious birders, and public and academic libraries.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Accurate.......2005-10-13

This is a book for serious birders of the highest order. It's clearly written with ornithologists and animal scientists as the primary audience, but there is a wealth of information in it. If you keep a library, this book will be in it. If your a weekender, it's probably too detailed. If you want to really understand why migration evolved and how it works and what it is all about, then work through this book, which collects the experts in one spot and provides the answers. Pricey, but you get a lot of book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Tracks!.......2004-09-08

This book is extremely helpful for interpreting a clean set of tracks, or getting a handle on a more challenging jumble of older and/or windswept tracks. It covers tracks of skittering tenebrionid beetles, to the big cats, and helps to separate out various antelope.

With it's great pictures of the animals, accompanying generally pen drawn tracks with centimeter ruler, and occasional color photos of tracks, it is a solid and readily available guide for a beginner in the field. I have been once to Southern Africa, I would welcome opinions from those more experienced with tracks, and especially with books upon tracking, for recommendations of other books as well.

No, as a beginner, you won't be able to necessarily separate out different zebra at first, or tell a black from a white rhino, or juvenile males lions from a lioness from tracks alone, however you'll use other clues to get there! While figuring out a set of cat tracks, listen to the agitated monkey in the next tree, warning you of the leopard perched in the tree, directly overhead!

It's strength is that it's a thin narrow book to go in a shirt pocket quite easily; to add more to it would have made it less pocketable. It has helpful ink drawn pictures of droppings...and scattered scats throughout the book in color, no less!

I gave the book a 5, and would have preferred a 4.5, downgrading from a 5 only because it tantalizes rather than tells much about the Art of tracking, i.e. using the many clues of spoor such as marks on trees, distinguishing running from walking or hopping tracks, talking about utilizing dehydration of scat to "age" it...and these are skills best learned in the field, with day after day experience with a more experienced guide.

I highly recommend this to accompany you to Southern Africa to learn about tracks, despite my reservation about it's tracking, as a good guide can fill in on that quite readily, whilst in the practical laboratory of the field!

I bought this when we were getting ready to move to Boston, having never been here before, we had no idea where to look for a place or what to expect (and yes the drivers live up to their reputations-- they are actually worse!). This book has some nice neighborhood/town descriptions, house hunting resources, and helpful resources including telephone numbers. Also has childcare and education information along with churches and cultural life information. Also has some maps througout the book, although you cannot drive by them, they are helpful in getting your bearings. I recommend it and would buy it again.

4 out of 5 stars Great SIPs Primer.......2007-08-23

Excellent overview of SIPs construction basics and techniques. Author explains in ordinary terms so any layman can understand. Anyone considering SIPs construction should buy this book. It would be nice if a newer version (this one is 2002)were available to discuss the latest products.

3 out of 5 stars Arguing for the Technology.......2007-01-13

Good book to explain the fundamentals and ideas behind why Structural Insulated Panels area a good building medium. Unfortunately, the solid information on estimating the costs or tricks to design that the interested party are looking for are not there.

I look for someone to write the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent source for hard to find information.......2006-06-18

this book provides a thorough and well detailed look at SIP anatomy and construction techniques. information on this construction type is extremely difficult to find from sources other than (possibly biased or glossed-over) information from SIP manufacturers. the content covers so many details of its construction that it could concievably be used as a primer/manual/textbook for contractors or others interested in using this construction type. any information needed to supplement the information found here will most likely be so specific that it will be material related to a particular manufacturer's product or information gleaned directly from materials testing reports. i have looked extensively, and not been able to find, any materials on SIPs that could compare to the value of this source.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Starting Point for Learning about SIPS.......2005-09-21

Just a quick note on this book. My wife and I are looking to build an energy-efficient home. We are both engineers and very detail-oriented people. As part of our due diligence, we picked up this book after seeing a demonstration house built with SIPS as part of the 2005 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival (this was part of the US Forest Service pavilion - sustainable building approaches area). As noted in an earlier review, this book does have a bit of a promotional feel. However, it could simply be the author's enthusiasm for what appears to be a very good product. The book is also somewhat light in treating potential problems with SIPS. The failures of mutliple SIP roofing systems in Juneau, Alaska should have been addressed. In fairness though, these failures seem to largely be installation problems on the part of a small number of builders unfamiliar with the product. Overall, this book is a very useful and fairly detailed introduction to SIPS building. We would love to see a follow-up title that goes into much more technical detail on designing for SIPs use, as well as further exploration of lessons-learned from using SIPs in various settings and climates.

5 out of 5 stars Answered my questions.......2004-05-25

I have been considering building a home on a piece of property I own for the better part of a year now. I'm a fan of SIPs due to energy efficiency and the perception I have of their ability to withstand the harsh climate of south Texas. It helps that the best home I've ever owned (and I've owned more than ten) was a panelized home but on a wood foundation that I purchased in Minnesota 15 years ago. The house was solid, energy efficient and better built than anything any of the many site built stick homes I owned before and since.

I've tracked down a variety of sources of information on SIPS including most information readily available on the web. This book has been an essential tool for me, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone considering building with SIPs. It addresses all of the common objections and misperceptions (and there are many), and it does so in a methodical and comprehensive manner. I can see where some folks might consider that to be promotional, but I believe there is still a stigma to panelized construction, at least in the minds of a large segment of the population, so perhaps it's appropriate that a little promotion or cheerleading is included. It also addresses a number of practical considerations you'll have when building, such as electrical, plumbing and hvac considerations. It's not a manual, but I wasn't looking for a manual. After reading it, I feel that I will be better able to find and work with a builder and accomplish my goal...to build a quality, affordable house that is structurally superior, energy efficient and will last the rest of my life. Most importantly, I have yet to find another source on the subject that provides so much information with so little effort. As a result, it gets five stars.
