Combining richly detailed empirical research on transnational connections with bold and imaginative theoretical argument, this innovative study offers fresh critical understandings of globalization and unique insights into post-apartheid South Africa. Based on research conducted between 1994 and 2001, Gillian Hart traces political dynamics in two former white towns and adjacent black townships in the province of KwaZulu-Natal that are major sites of Taiwanese investment. Focusing on East Asian connections with these places, and on histories and memories of racialized dispossession, she highlights the fragility of the neoliberal project in post-apartheid South Africa. She also suggests how rethinking the "land question" in terms of a social wage could connect a variety of ongoing struggles. Hart provides a clear sense of how and why both popular and academic discourses of globalization are so deeply disabling. Readers will come away with more politically empowering understandings of social change in an increasingly interconnected world.

Mergers are not just a matter of putting two companies together and adding up the profits. The cultural aspects of the two organizations have to be merged successfully, or the blending can be doomed to failure. IBM and PwC took a specific approach to merging PwC Consulting into the IBM fold. There were different styles of management and philosophy, one being hierarchical and one being more client-centered. In many cases, neither organization or structure was "wrong" in their approach. It's just that a decision had to be made as to what the desired behavior of the merged entity should be. The Tangible Culture method uses tools and exercises to explore the current state of both cultures, the desired state of the merged culture, and how close the current culture conforms to the end state. This type of approach minimizes the danger of "right vs. right", where two good practices are allowed to coexist or dominate each other without thought as to how they contribute to where you want to be. Using this type of structure to address culture issues in the organization can do wonders to make sure that more mergers and restructurings actually accomplish something.
The book does seem to be a bit repetitive at times, as the application section uses the same charts and format over and over to show how the system can be applied. On one hand, that's good in that it reinforces the message. On the other hand, it all seems to blur together after awhile. It's not a fault of the system, but more a flaw in the presentation and layout of the book. But even with that observation, this is still a book that is worth reading in order to increase the chances that your mergers are not destructive...

Sara Moulton Reger and her colleagues have done a great service by clearly demonstrating the importance of culture in driving organizational performance, whether that organization is being formed from a merger or acquistion, or is working to implement strategic change and growth. Importantly, they do not fall into the trap of using attributional models, those that attempt to force fit an organization's culture into pre-determined categories. Rather, they treat culture as it plays out in the thousands of daily interactions, the 'way we do things around here,' to determine the norms and behaviors that will guide people in achievement of the organization's business priorities.
Their use of Outcome Narratives, Right vs Right, and other powerful tools, all clearly described, are very helpful for getting people focused on desired ends and agreed ways of achieving them. With these tools, people can avoid having the 'violent agreements' that we have found so often in our work while treating culture clashes.

This book is an excellent exploration of a topic that is usually poorly treated, either by being too academic or too simplistic. Reger and her IBM colleagues dive deeply into concrete techniques for uncovering, understanding and reconciling "cultural" issues that inhibit performance. Written for both practitioners and leaders, Can Two Rights Make A Wrong highlights cultural implications of major changes from mergers/acquisitions to organizational changes across international boundaries. As a global change practitioner, I found exciting methods for successfully managing major changes in the book.

Description:
We propose that when people consider whether their judgments are accurate enough, feelings of wrongness from regulatory nonfit (inconsistency between regulatory state and strategic means) can suggest that the answer is no and enhance correction of judgments relative to feelings of rightness from regulatory fit. Results from two experiments supported that hypothesis. When we activated an accuracy motive, participants who experienced regulatory nonfit provided judgments more consistent with correction for bias when they experienced regulatory nonfit than when they experienced regulatory fit (Experiment 1). Drawing participants' attention to an earlier event as a source of rightness feelings eliminated the effect of regulatory fit on apparent correction of judgments (Experiment 2), suggesting attribution of regulatory fit/nonfit feelings to the accuracy of those judgments.

Excellent Book About the Animal Kingdom.......2007-05-15
This is a book about some of the most unusual members of the animal kingdom. The cases related here are most bizarre, yet very real.
Male seahorses can get pregnant while some slugs are hermaphrodites and there really are succh things as blood sucking bats. Male deep sea anglerfish parasitically attach themselves to their females for life. Horned lizards are known to squirt blood from their eyes as a means of self-defense. Likewise, animals ranging from lizards to starfish sacrifice body parts to escape from predators and then they later regrow those same parts. Female preying mantises bite off the head of the male while the male is couplating and the headless male keeps right on with the impregnation.
This book is written in the form of short essays and with a whimsical writing style to boot. This is a good book.

Perhaps the others reviews were family or friends. I think this "book" reads like a sailor's log, with a few details added here and there. It's a dry, "we went here with this sailboat and this crew, then I went there with a different boat and crew, etc." Not recommended.

Sailing With Scoundrels And Kings by John Jourdane is an amazing tale of one man's worldly journeys via sailboat. Having traveled around the world thrice, across the Pacific Ocean 47 times, and the Atlantic 12 for a total of 300,000 plus miles, Jourdane's encounters include hundreds of interesting and estranging people, literally scoundrels and kings. Sailing With Scoundrels And Kings is the depiction of the many people Jourdane met on his journeys, and is very highly recommended reading, particularly those interested in sailing around the world themselves, as this book is an excellent education on what to expect and plan for.

Pretty Good Dictionary For Learners.......2007-10-02
This is my first dictionary for learning Irish, and so far it's been pretty good. It is fairly complete in terms of entries, and often has examples of how words are used. It doesn't have pronunciations, which is a bummer on the Irish side but, in some ways, even more so on the English side because when I want to look up the Irish word for "live", for example, so I can talk about where I live, there is also an entry for "live" as in live music. So I have to go back and forth a bit. But overall I like this dictionary.
It is very good although it does not have a pronunciation key..........2007-09-01
It is very easy to use and it can be a life saver when you are not sure about a certain word as you are learning irish.It contains about 24,500 entries. This is the main irish dictionary that I use. :) Although, it is best to buy this with an Irish course or at least have some knowledge about the pronunciation of irish words because the pronunciation is not listed with the word. But has proved to be very very useful, helpful, and invaluable as I learn about Gaelic Irish!
