                        Book Description

The innovation process is the most important of all business processes. Innovation is the means by which value is constructed and efficiencies are created. It is the source of sustainable competitive advantage. This book shows how the innovation process is changing profoundly. Part of the change results from the application of new technologies to the innovation process itself. A new category of technology has emerged which we call 'innovation technology'. This includes simulation and modelling, visualization, and rapid prototyping technologies. When used effectively, innovation technology makes the innovation process more economical and ameliorates some of its uncertainties. These technological changes are accompanied by changing organization structures and skills requirements. The technologies are used in fast moving, creative environments and are suited to project-based organization. They also require the development of new 'craft' skills to realize the possibilities created by the new 'code'. The book outlines a new way of thinking about innovation. Traditional definitions of 'research', 'development' and 'engineering', imply a progressive linearity which doesn't exist in reality. They are also associated with organizational departments, which are breaking down where once they existed, and are in any case non-existent in the vast majority of firms. They also fail to capture the central importance of design in innovation. We propose a new schema for the innovation process: Think, Play, Do. Innovation requires creating new ideas and thinking about new options, playing with them to see if they are practical, economical and marketable, and then doing: making the innovation real. This new schema captures the emerging innovation process using a more contemporary idiom. The book reports in-depth studies from a number of companies and sectors. Major case studies of Procter and Gamble and Arup Partners are presented. It reports on the use of innovation technology in a range of other companies and organizations, from pharmaceuticals in GSK, to engineering design in Ricardo engineering , and welding in TWI. We describe how innovation technology is used in traditional industries, such as in mining, and in public projects, such as the development of London's traffic congestion charge and the stabilization of the leaning tower of Pisa.

                            Book Description

The seemingly innocent observation that the activities of organisms bring about changes in environments is so obvious that it seems an unlikely focus for a new line of thinking about evolution. Yet niche construction--as this process of organism-driven environmental modification is known--has hidden complexities. By transforming biotic and abiotic sources of natural selection in external environments, niche construction generates feedback in evolution on a scale hitherto underestimated--and in a manner that transforms the evolutionary dynamic. It also plays a critical role in ecology, supporting ecosystem engineering and influencing the flow of energy and nutrients through ecosystems. Despite this, niche construction has been given short shrift in theoretical biology, in part because it cannot be fully understood within the framework of standard evolutionary theory.

Wedding evolution and ecology, this book extends evolutionary theory by formally including niche construction and ecological inheritance as additional evolutionary processes. The authors support their historic move with empirical data, theoretical population genetics, and conceptual models. They also describe new research methods capable of testing the theory. They demonstrate how their theory can resolve long-standing problems in ecology, particularly by advancing the sorely needed synthesis of ecology and evolution, and how it offers an evolutionary basis for the human sciences.

Already hailed as a pioneering work by some of the world's most influential biologists, this is a rare, potentially field-changing contribution to the biological sciences.

                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to evolutionary theory.......2007-05-29

One of the best books I've read on evolutionary processes.

The authors are well place in the academic community. John Odling-Smee (Oxford University), Kevin Laland (St. Andrews University) and Marc Feldman (Stanford University) argue that the ability of organisms to construct habitat which subsequently alters evolutionary pressures upon the constructing organism's gene pool represents a curiously unexplored evolutionary mechanism. They call the process 'niche construction'.

To quote the cover jacket, "Niche construction is the process whereby organisms, through their activities and choices, modify their own and each other's niches. By transforming natural selection pressures, niche construction generates feedback in evolution, on a scale hitherto underestimated, and in a manner that alters the evolutionary dynamic. Niche construction also plays a critical role in ecology, where it supports ecosystem engineering and part regulates the flow of energy and nutrients through ecosystems."

The authors argue that classic evolutionary theory lost sight of 'niche construction', favoring an exclusive interest in genetic inheritance and reproduction dynamics (natural selection). Traditionally, scientists have argued that evolution is entirely random and blind to any consequences of genetic mutation. In other words, evolution is not self-referential, the choices of the reproducing individuals have no impact on selection pressures.

The authors vigorously argue against this simplistic model. They argue that niche construction is a fundamental evolutionary process in its own right. In this way individuals offer two legacies to their decendants, their genes and an ecological setting. In establishing their framework, they much more comfortably address issues Dawkins had difficulty answering. For example, the authors show how Dawkin's circular 'selfish gene' and 'extended phenotype' metaphors can easily be dismissed by incorporating niche construction into one's evolutionary theory.

Example cited by the authors include the creation of an oxygen rich atsmophere by plants, beaver dams, wren tool use, yam cultivation by humans, and a host of others.

I suspect the book will have limited short term impact because it makes an already difficult subject even more complex. Few will be happy with its refutation of classic evolutionary theory's convenient solutions to problems of causality. For example, the authors spend a great deal of time with something they call 'semantic information.' "Semantic information is information, typically encoded in DNA, that specifies the adaptations of organisms. It pertains to the life requirements and functioning of organisms in their local environments. Semantic information is accrued primarily through population genetic processes, although it can also be acquired through other processes, for instance, learning. Semantic information is therefore "meaningful" information for organisms in niches. Unlike configurational information, semantic information is incommensurate with binary digits, or BITS."

I'm not sure what this means, but they are equating cultural heritage with genetic heritage. Additionally, their notion of information is outside mathematical modeling. This will certainly be difficult assertion for many to accept.

Since there is currently no editorial reviews, I'll close with more quotes from the dust jacket:

"If the amount of attention warranted by this book is paid to it, the
result should be a massive reorientation of evolutionary theory."
                            David Hull, Northwestern University

"... a wonderful exploration of this strangely neglected topic,
opening new vistas on how organisms - including humans -

book is a `must read.'" Robert M.May, University of Oxford

"The sobriquet, `landmark' is casually used to press the virtues of
books, but seldom can it be taken seriously, Niche Construction
really is a landmark book." Richard Lewontin, Harvard University

"This ambitious book tackles a problem of fundamental
importance in science: the whole-hearted synthesis of the
disciplines of ecology and evolution."Robert D. Holt, University
                            of Florida

This book has to be The Book on niche construction, the tendency of organisms to change their local environments to their advantage. The first half is for any reader who is interested in the topic from any angle - its widespread occurrence, examples from all kingdoms, its origin, its evolutionary significance for species including other species. The second half frames questions to experimenters interested in testing evolutionary repercussions of the phenomenon. The tie to human cultural activities (the heavy niche constructers) is also explored as the team of authors includes specialists on this topic. In these exciting times for biology and evolutionary theory, this book marks a bold new direction that opens the door to evolution through the environment. An eye opener.

I've met and studied with the author, Wen Mei Yu, and she is the real thing. We are lucky to have this book, especially in English. She teaches here in Los Angeles and also does healing work for cancer patients at UCLA.

The first half of the book gives a concise review of the basics of chinese energy work and esoteric Taoism. It is laid out in a matter of fact way without any fantasizing or superstitious sillyness.

The second half of the book is a methodical training manual for a powerful chi gung form. Regular practice, even without a teacher, yields results to the capacity of the student. This may be the best way to really learn to experience the flow and feeling of "chi" if you don't have access to a master guide to help.

                              Highly recommended.

This is not, thankfully, another generic book on "chi practice". Author Wen Mei Yu Introduces us to and instructs us in a very specific form of Chi Kung: Wild Goose Chi Kung. Yu was a student of Madam Yan Mei Jun, the legendary grandmaster of this popular and complex school of energy cultivation.

Every necessary topic is covered in this volume, including history (photos of Grandmaster Yan Mei Jun are included), philosophy (this is a Taoist school), Theory (very detailed, many diagrams with explanations), and of course the COMPLETE 64 movement Wild Goose form.

A note on the instructional photographs in this volume: every technique is illustrated by several photographs. The pictures do an excellent job of communicating direction, movement, posture, et cetera. Yu also takes the time with more complex techniques to show common mistakes practitioners should avoid. This is probably one of the best books on physical chi practice out there. I found it to be thorough but not cluttered. Every piece of information fit, and the author's descriptions and explanations were easlily understood in the context of traditional belief and practice.

Let's be short and to the point: To date, this is the best available book on Wild Goose Qigong. Wen Mei Yu's set of three accompanying videos, sold through her website, are also of the highest standard and all I wish is that other "masters" flaunting videos put forth the same production quality.

This book describes the philosophy and the practice of Wild Goose Chi Gung in a very clear and specific way that lay people can understand. She clearly describes the hand and other movements, the points of the meridians and the positions of Wild Goose Chi Gung. I highly recommend this book.

WOW, WOW, WOW!!! I think this book should be required reading for EVERY court reporter. I've been reporting 21 years, have all my certifications, but I'd have to say I feel like I have just now "turned the corner" after incorporating some of these briefs!

Curious? How about MOINGS for "among other things," AEFM for "African-American," and my favorite, the 40+ pages of "is" phrases including STHR-LGS for "Is there anything else."

You'll want to make space in your carrying case so you always have this reference with you!

I can't say enough good things about Laurie's books for court reporters. BRIEF ENCOUNTERS should be on every reporter's and student's reference shelf. This book contains one- and two-stroke briefs and phrases for everyday reporting and is full of ideas which you will want to incorporate into your dictionaries. Some examples:

HOUB = how about HOUBT = how about the HOUBZ = how about these HOUBS = how about those HOUF = how far HOUFT = how fast HOUM = how many HOUFM = how many of them HOUMZ = how many of these HOUMS = how many of those

The consistency of Laurie's outlines makes it very easy to adopt new briefs and streamline your writing. Get it -- you won't be disappointed!

                              Book Description

In an evocative sequel to the acclaimed New Orleans: Elegance and Decadence, author and photographer Richard Sexton returns with an in-depth visual journey through the hidden mansions—some inhabited, many now long abandoned—of Louisiana's River Road. Bordering the Mississippi, these antebellum landmarks were once the epitome of gracious living in the Deep South. Over the past century, these grand dwellings have slowly succumbed to time, humidity, and the reclamation of the land: first by nature, then by real-estate developers who built subdivisions, oil refineries, and strip malls where curtains of Spanish moss once swayed from the live oaks. This collection—featuring over 200 haunting color photographs with extensive captions explaining the architectural significance and history of each structure—is a beautiful elegy for a rapidly disappearing landscape and its ghosts.

This is a gorgeous book full of information and amazing photos of some of the most prominent plantations that are on River Road between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Some of the most amazing photos were from plantations that have all but been destroyed. I'd be really interested to see an updated version as some of these homes have been completely transformed since these photos were taken. Most noteably would be Houmas House and Laura which both in this book are nothing like their now restored selves. Regardless, this book is an excellent addition to anyone's plantation library or coffee table!

I was born and raised on the River Road. I have grown up and almost all of the wonders in this book. Nothing comes close to the accuracy and beauty captured in these photos. I would HIGHLY reccomend this book to anyone that would want to know or learn about the grand homes along the Mississippi and South Louisiana. This book is second to none in my rating. A MUST HAVE and a MUST OWN for EVERYONE!

I am fascinated with New Orleans and the River Road area and it's history .This has to be one of the best publications about this subject. Sexton seems to capture so much of it's history in the pages of this book, more so than any other author has. The photography is also wonderful and straight forward. I recommend it to any one who wants to learn more about southern Louisiana plantations.

5 out of 5 stars A FINE TRIBUTE TO RIVER ROAD!!!!!.......2002-05-16

Although I've never been on River Road I feel this book brought me an authentic glimpse of life during the plantation era. The photographs are amazing and the book kept me spellbound for hours!! What fascinanted me most was how some plantations looked as if their inhabitants literally walked out the door and never looked back. Fine furniture, pictures, personal posessions were just left to slowly rot under leaky ceilings and caving roofs. On my next trip to New Orleans I will make it a priority to take a trip down River Road.
