                          Book Description

This new edition builds on the strengths of the previous edition, and offers students a concise but broad coverage of the main theories informing organisational behaviour. The book moves from the individual to the organisational and the global context, and critically examines the three themes of change, communication and conflict in each. It promotes critical evaluation of theory and practice to enable students and managers to interpret and deal with organisational problems. This book is suitable for students requiring an introduction to organisational behaviour on business and management undergraduate degrees, post-experience and postgraduate courses, and professional courses. It is also designed as a focused and lively general reader on the subject.

                              Book Description

Vertisols, one of the eleven established soil orders, are clay soils with unusual and interesting properties. They cover more than 350 million hectares of land in the world and in tropical Africa alone there are over 100 million hectares. Because of their very small particle size and high surface area, these soils have higher physical and chemical reactivity than other soils. Their interaction with agrochemicals/industrial wastes, has been, increasingly, the subject of research especially in the last two decades. Vertisols create special problems when used for engineering purposes.

This book is intended to provide comprehensive and state-of-the-art information about Vertisols worldwide. Special attention is given to the use and management of soils such as fertilizer use, crop selection, soil tillage, water restriction on land including irrigation, and soil erosion. A special chapter has been added to deal with geotechnical engineering of Vertisols.

Vertisols have great potential for agricultural production but many, especially in the developing world, are underutilized due to a lack of understanding regarding their behaviour and management.

This book is written by leading scientists worldwide. It is expected that this monograph will be of great use to soil scientists and agronomists, graduate and senior graduate students.

Improvement of their management may solve the current food deficiency in the world.

Following a highly successful first edition, this book takes on a highly entertaining approach to an area normally reserved for dry, hard-to-follow books. Students benefit not only from the humorous aspects, but also from the in-depth and memorable discussions. This second edition features four new chapters on computer-intensive techniques, including MANOVA, Logistic Regression, Measuring Change and Structural Equation Modeling. This book is excellent for medical and other health professions students.

                              Customer Reviews:

                              5 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure.......2004-12-04

Although I have long since graduated to much less easygoing fare, I love this book. When I was a confused and clueless medical student, this was the first text that helped me to come to terms with biostatistical concepts.

If you have a background in psychology or other softer sciences, are facing your first biostatistics class, and find other texts a bit scary or obscure, this is definitely worth a try.

The jokes become annoying and the examples a bit garbled on a second read, but I still love this book because of the clarity of its visuals. I also like and highly recommend the chapters on factor analysis and survival analysis, and usually give this book to new students in our lab.

5 out of 5 stars Best intro stat book I've found.......2004-11-09

I took stat 20 years ago, and decided I needed an update, particularly regarding how to calculate sample size: this book was the ticket. A lot about sample size always seemed to me to be smoke-and-mirrors, and WHEN that's so (not always, but sometimes!), Norman and Streiner admit it, saving the learner a lot of frustration. Money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars The best biostatistics review ever!.......2004-11-03

I keep a copy of this book in my office to loan out to students who are reviewing for biostatistics exams, and colleagues who feel the need to brush up on their biostats.

The book definitely does assume some basic knowledge about statistics -- I wouldn't recommend it for someone trying to learn about biostats for the first time. It's really best for someone who already has some kind of formal training in biostatistics, but doesn't want to have to dredge through the heavy textbooks for every question -- I can definitely find the answers to my most common questions in this book much more quickly than I can in my formal textbooks.

For those looking for a less technical introduction to biostatistics that doesn't presume a lot of preexisting knowledge, I'd suggest Modulsky's 'Intuitive Biostatistics'.

I found this book extremely annoying to read. I thought it

                                Book Description

In Animal Life in Nature, Myth and Dreams, Elizabeth Caspari connects the world of real, living animals with the symbolic world of animal images in human thought, both conscious and unconscious. She gives the reader an opportunity to make this connection on his or her own personal journey of discovery.

This book is a study of animals—their natural history, mythology, folklore, and religious significance around the world as well as their role in our lives, dreams, and everyday language. It examines the symbolic impact animals have on our collective culture, particularly on our own personal and interior lives.

From Albatross to Zebra, each animal is pictured in color and factual context is given about its behavior in the natural world. Information is included about habitat, distribution, weight, size, longevity, and classification. By drawing on a process of amplification developed by C.G. Jung, in which an image is related to a previous historical, mythological, religious, or ethnological context, Animal Life in Nature, Myth and Dreams discusses the meaning of the animal in a dream, amplifying the reader's understanding of that animal. Intended for anyone interested in the actual behavior and nature of animals and the world we live in, Animal Life presents a good deal of ethological and mythological material. By contemplating the significance of our fellow creatures, and how everything in our universe is connected, Animal Life offers a more whole, and more healing, view of the world.

                                Fully illustrated in color.

When Bear Bryant took over the Texas A&M football program in 1954, he inherited a team that had lost its last five games by a combined score of 133-41. That season more than 100 Aggie hopefuls arrived in the small town of Junction for the first practice of a now legendary training camp. The sun bore down. The drills escalated. Trainers doled out water like gold, and meals and accommodations were horribly spartan. Ten hellish days later, only 34 remained to form the 1954 team that would only win one game, but those survivors--and that's what they were--formed the nucleus of the squad that would go undefeated just two years later.

This is the story of that team, that coach, the 10 days that shook their world, and the seasons they played together. "We lost alot (sic) of games," recalls Gene Stallings, who endured those days as a player and eventually followed Bryant as head coach both at A&M and Alabama, "but Coach Bryant knew what he was doing. Out of the yellow dust and the broiling heat of Junction, he forged a team of champions." Jim Dent's evocative recounting is so real and immediate you'll feel your throat getting scratchy as you read. You'll also feel remarkable respect for the players who toughed it out--and for Bryant, who begins as a man possessed, but, day after day, as he breaks the backs of some and helps instill true grit in others, transforms into a human being. --Jeff Silverman

                                Book Description

The legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant is recognized nationwide as one of the greatest coaches ever. So why did he always cite his 1-9 Aamp;M team of 1954 as his favorite? This is the story of a remarkable team - and the beginning of the legend. The Junction Boys tells the story of Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's legendary training camp in the small town of Junction, Texas. In a move that many consider the salvation of the Texas Aamp;M football program, Coach Bryant put 115 players through the most grueling practices ever imagined. Only a handful of players survived the entire 10 days, but they braved the intense heat of the Texas sun and the burning passion of their coach, and turned a floundering team into one of the nation's best. The Junction Boys is more than just a story of tough practices without water breaks. An extraordinary fellowship was forged from the mind-numbing pain. The thirty-five survivors bonded together like no other team in America. They profited from the Junction experience; the knowledge they took back with them to College Station, about themselves and what they were capable of, would be used for the rest of their lives. In vivid and powerful images reminiscent of Friday Night Lights, Hoosiers, and The Last Picture Show, these young men and their driven coach come to life. The Junction Boys contains all the hallmarks of a classic sports story, and it combines America's love of college football with an extraordinary story of perseverance and triumph.

Excellent account of what playing football for Paul Bryant was like when he was possibly at his meanest. Frustrations from dealing with The University Of Kentucky's lack of support for their winning football program (which Bryant was responsible for) and the job of turning Texas A&M around at that time would have made ANYBODY a little edgy I think!! If you love football you will love this book!!!

                                Hard Work Pays Off

The story Junction Boys by Jim Dent is a book about a group of Aggies who need a new coach so they can get back to there winning ways. Texas A&M found the right man for the job. They hired the legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. Bryant was in consecutive winning seasons with Kentucky before he decided to make the switch to A&M. When "Bear" arrived he was there for one reason and that was to win a championship. He figured the only way he could was to take the team to a town called Junction. On there way the team noticed that the ground was getting dryer and dryer. At the camp Bryant was in no mood for messing around. He was running the team more than ever. All the players were getting dehydrated, cramping, and even worse, quitting. The Bear didn't care that half the team was quitting as long as he could get a championship. After the dreading camp the team wasn't doing any better during the regular season. The first season the team only won one game. But the next two were the seasons to remember. "A terrific football book"- Tom Landry, former Dallas Cowboys football coach. Junction Boys was a great book about a very hard working team. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the game of football. And if you're looking for any good book to read this would be a great choice. This book has it all, comedy and serious. This terrific book is the perfect book for a perfect football fan. There is also a movie about the Junction Boys starring Tom Beringer. The movie is a little different but is also a great football story. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the great game of football.

                                4 out of 5 stars A nice, well-paced read.......2006-11-12

"The Junction Boys" is about Texas A&M's 1954 summer football camp, run by the incoming coach (who eventually became a legend) Paul "Bear" Bryant.

While another reviewer mentioned that the Junction story is such an oft-told tale that nobody could shine any new light on it, I will mention that I did not grow up in the Deep South or in Texas and football was not religion in my household - so this story was rather new to me. What I discovered was that it still makes for an interesting tale, one in which a demanding new head coach runs his previously pampered charges ragged and forges a champion. It's the kind of tale that people love, but it isn't just that simple.

When Bryant gets hired to coach A&M's football program, he already has built a reputation for success as coach at Kentucky, so it's not as though he just dropped out of the blue. It is mentioned that Bryant often felt unappreciated at Kentucky, being overshadowed by Adolph Rupp and his basketball-playing Wildcats.

The Texas A&M football team in 1954 is something of a joke. Rich alumni manage to secure roster spots for their sons, whether they're decent football players or not, and the fact that A&M at the time was very nearly a military academy in the vein of the Citadel meant that most high school stars would rather play at other schools where the atmosphere was more conducive to fun and games.

Bryant changed all this when he brought his players to Junction, a small East Texas town in the middle of nowhere. Although it is summer, and undoubtedly hot, Junction's typical summer weather isn't blast-furnace dry. Unfortunately for the players, Junction has been in a drought and the landscape is barren, dusty, cactus-grown, and unbelievably hot. Still - Bryant (admittedly surprised at the poor locale for his training camp)decides to run his players to the point of exhaustion, nearly killing one of them (who never really recovers his health). While this certainly runs off the weak-willed and those who thought they would live the life of a pampered scholarship athlete, it also runs off a lot of the team's truly talented players as well. The 34 survivors tend to be those that simply couldn't afford the alternative. Seriously undermanned (even in that era of one-platoon football) A&M proceeds to lose all but one of their games. However, they are a gritty and resourceful bunch, and are competitive in most of their losses.

Two years later, Bryant's A&M team is the undefeated Southwest Conference champion. Only 8 players are left from the 34 who survived Junction, but they all share that common bond and the legacy formed from that hellish summer camp.

I read the book The Junction Boys: How Ten Days in Hell with Bear Bryant Forged a Championship Team, written by Jim Dent. The book is a nonfiction book about the legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and his Texas A&M football team. In my own words the theme of this book is, don't ever give up, no matter how stressful anything is, don't ever give up. Bear Bryant is known as one of the greatest coaches ever. One question you could ask about this book is, is why does Bryant always state that his 1-9 Texas A&M team his favorite team he has every coached?
One hot August day in 1954, two busses sped through a two-lane highway. Those buses were on their way to Junction, Texas where the players would soon arrive at the infamous dirt field. The field was filled with rocks, cactus, dust, and gnarled mesquite trees. The Texas A&M football program has been in a dreadful drought. Coach Bryant will eventually turn that around but at the same time he would be killing them. He came to Texas to teach a football team how to play his kind of football. Hard, fast, smash mouth football. He pushed his players through the toughest drills you could think of. Every night at least one or two people couldn't stand the throwing up anymore, they would try and escape the dreadful 10-day training camp back to College Station. The many men who survived defiantly did not regret it, because the Aggie's would top the rankings and be the nations best.
I thought this book is very intense, here is just one bit of evidence, "Practice is worse than hell when we don't get any water breaks." This quote is very intriguing and shows me that Coach Bryant doesn't give a damn about his players. It all matters to him in the end of the week on game day. The book overall was a good book, I thought the book explained in great detail about how tough the practices were. It's nothing that a TV show or a movie could explain. On the other hand I thought the author could have explained in more detail about the games that they played in. In the end I thought the book gave a good amount of information and facts and that the information made the book better. If you are a football fan, I strongly recommend this book to you. The junction Boys is a great learning experience for not only football players but for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it! And I'm not an Aggie........2003-01-17

After watching The Junction Boys on ESPN, I knew I had to read this book. Of course the movie barely scratched the surface of the story. Jim Dent does an excellent job of bringing the historical events of Aggie football in the early 50s to life. I'm not a big fan of college football, and know very little about Texas A&M; however, after reading this book I wanted to know more about Paul Bryant and college football. You don't have to be a football fan to enjoy this book. Coach Bryant's philosophy of life would serve us all well--hell, he should have been president. Of the 30+ players that survived Coach Bryant's 10 day boot camp from Hell, many went on to successful careers in business, football, and coaching. The success of his students is testament to his abilities as a leader, teacher, and coach. Jim Dent makes it palatable in this book.

I recently purchased The Undefeated by Jim Dent, which is a story of the Oklahoma Sooners, and have found it equally enjoyable. Jim Dent is a great writer, and I'm thankful to have discovered him.

                                        Book Description

This anthology demonstrates to the full just how rewarding an art form the aphorism can be, and just how brilliantly the aphorist can illuminate the hidden truth, or lay bare the ironies of existence. Specific sections including 'Religion', 'Money and Rank', 'Men, Women, Marriage' and 'Politics', cover the whole range of aphoristic literature. This book brings together the most diverse figures-the classic aphorists, like La Rochefoucauld; the philosophers, from the Greeks to Samuel Johnson to Virginia Woolf-as well as statesmen, scientists, boulevardiers, Olympians, and gadflies. John Gross draws on their wisdom and wit to produce an anthology that will be referred to time and time again.

Those are the bitter pills of civilization. Like other bitter pills, they have great healing power. As a matter of fact, if the World took more notice of those pearls of wisdom, produced by outstanding minds, from Heraclitus to the Huxleys, policies might be less absurd and mass actions less disastrous than they actually are.

The book is dark verging on sardonic, reflecting the dark, sardonic nature of the best epigrams of our age. I was inspired to respond in the margins to a number of them, and I can't think of a better response to epigrams in general, than for them to get under your prickly skin to the extent that you might write your own ironic counterstatements. Bloodshed begets bloodshed, and so we might say (ironically) that this sort of bitterness begets bitterness. But it may very well be the most brilliant bitterness you've known.

Some of my favorite quotes with my responses--representative in the extreme:

"Where they burn books they will also in the end burn human bodies"--Heine, < >, 1823

"Where they burn human beings, they will also, in the end, burn the wrong book"--Eucaleh Terrapin

"A secret may sometimes be best kept by keeping the secret of its being a secret"--Sir Henry Taylor, < >, 1823

"Thus the wisest proverb is common sense"--Eucaleh Terrapin

"Freedom produces jokes, and jokes produce freedom"--Jean Paul Richter, Introduction to Aesthetics, 1823

"But to be witty is to be serious about other comedians"--Eucaleh Terrapin

5 out of 5 stars Only Missing Wittgenstein.......2006-11-01

John Gross has compliled an excellent collection of the best aphorisms into a nicely accessible framework. The book is arranged by chapters reflecting everything from "Nature" to "The Afterlife." This arrangement works well as a path to pursue the great thoughts that philosophers, psychologists, and aphorists have written about the areas that most commonly provoke interest. The book has an outstanding index and an insightful introduction from Gross in which he expresses his regret about not having beem able to obtain permission to include the observations of Wittgenstein. As Vauvenargues wrote in 1746, "Men's maxims reveal their characters," and one of the great values in this collection is that it juxtaposes what others have said by subject area, juxtaposing what the famous thinkers here included remarked on the same subjects. The cover of this volume displays an explosive rocket, appropriately enough. The anti-religious elements are especially entertaining, as it is always fun to see the response to the groveling aspects of Christian orthodoxy. Highly recommended.

Like most collections of aphorisms this one is rich in helpful thoughts. These thoughts inspire and give birth to new thoughts. 1) Aphorisms of others ideally inspire aphorisms of our own.
                                        2) Aphorisms help make our minds more interesting.
                                        3) It is senseless to read too many aphorisms at once
                                        4) A little here a little there, aphoristic pleasure everywhere.
                                        5) A good aphorism is one you want to tell someone else.

5 out of 5 stars Serve up some wisdom on your coffee table.......2003-11-18

This is an ideal book for the coffee table, guest bedroom, or bathroom, but also one that will stand proudly on the bookshelf next to Bartlett's Famous Quotations and other prestigious literary reference books. The entries are witty, entertaining, often quite profound, and well organized throughout. The sources are varied but nearly all of the names are widely recognizable.

An aphorism is defined as "a short, pithy statement containing a truth of general import." In the introduction to this volume John Gross offers several distinguishing characteristics of the aphorism. Though the term `maxim' is often used as its synonym, an aphorism is considered more speculative, and sometimes more subversive than a maxim. While aphorisms offer insights and wisdom, they differ from proverbs in that they are not apocryphal. And while they are universal, they also generally bear the personal mark of the author.

Goethe, Nietzsche, Chekhov, Voltaire, Spinoza, Wilde, Yeats, James...but a few of the authors included in this book.

To give a flavor of the kinds of entries, consider these from the chapter on religion.

"Probably no invention came more easily to man than Heaven."

"Heathen, n. A benighted creature who has the folly to worship something that he can see and feel."

"If God created us in his own image, we have more than reciprocated."

And if you don't like those, there are fifty other chapters to choose from.

                                              Book Description

In an age of myriad computer fonts and instant communication, your handwriting style is increasingly a very personal creation. In this book, Margaret Shepherd, America's premier calligrapher, shows you that calligraphy is not simply a craft you can learn, but an elegant art form that you can make your own.

Calligraphy remains perennially popular, often adorning wedding invitations, diplomas, and commercial signs. Whether it is Roman, Gothic, Celtic, Bookhand, or Italic style, calligraphy conveys class and elegance. Margaret Shepherd makes this ancient art form accessible in a completely hand-lettered technical guide that will:

                                              * Provide context for calligraphy as an art, exploring the rich tradition of hand-lettering and mapping the evolution of the most popular styles.

                                              * Give detailed technical advice on choosing pens, paper, and inks, setting up your workspace, mastering various pen angles, along with step-by-step illustrations to guide you as you practice.

                                              * Explain which alphabets are appropriate for different forms of writing. For example, the Roman alphabet works well for short, unpunctuated passages, while the Italic alphabet is more suited to informal everyday communication.

                                              * Encourage you to personalize your lettering by using variant strokes and interpreting how you would like the words to look on the page.

                                              * Inspire you with carefully chosen illustrations and examples, which bring letters to life.

In Margaret Shepherd's own words, "Calligraphy trains not only your eye and hand, but your mind as well." Learn Calligraphy is the authoritative primer for this age-old craft, and will help develop a new appreciation for lettering as you discover your creative personality.

Margaret Shepherd has written many books about this subject (Calligarphy), this is special because include a sort of recomendations for students.
                                              I really enjoyed this book.

This book is excellent. When I received my book, I started to practice for 1 week and now my handwritting is pretty.

I was really having a hard time picking out calligraphy how to books so i went to the book store. unfortunately they do not have a lot to choose from, at the second store i found a better selection and found Margaret Sheperd's books. Wow, great books and great way to learn, she has a funny side to her and this book is incredible, not only do you learn you have fun doing it. i also saw a few more books in her name. Unfortunately i didn't have very much time to look at them all and i cant wait to go back to see the rest. I am thinking of picking up all her books.

I think this is the best of the starter books. Very easy and a fun read too!

5 out of 5 stars Response with gratitude.......2005-05-26

I am the author of this book and just want to respond that I agree with the very critical reviewer who felt strongly that Copperplate should have been included. I wish so too. But it would need a whole other set of supplies and hand positions. Copperplate comes along much later, and is really outside the main core of the broad-pen historic hands. Maybe some day!
To respond to Gary Bisaqa's review, I agree and I have covered the business end of calligraphy as a free-lance job, in a whole other book, Calligraphy Projects for Pleasure and Profit.
I wrote this, like all my other books, because I wish I'd had such a book when I started out. Thank you to others who wrote in to say that it helped them start out too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for learning.......2003-06-10

I am learning calligraphy and have looked at a number of books on the subject. This book is almost perfect. She gives you so much more than alphabets: key exercises to do before you start the alphabets, typical beginner's problems (most of which I have experienced!), practice pages you can reproduce. Her sections on swashes and "accessorizing" Gothic capitals are also wonderful - what had always seemed highly mysterious to me turns out to be a matter of combining building blocks, creativity, and - who would have thought - a lot of fun.

One thing she does not do is to cover every hand imaginable. There are lots of books like that out there. Rather, she only covers a small number of hands, but covers them very thoroughly, with a special eye to us novices. For example, once I got the basic hands down, I found one of my main problems was spacing the letters. Nothing looks worse than inconsistent horizontal spacing. She gives good coverage to this important issue, for example suggesting that you step back and look at it from a distance. Try it - if you're a novice, you'll be surprised at how different (and maybe bad) it looks.

I also very much enjoy the samples of projects that she shows as examples of how to apply each hand. In this she highlights the talents of (I assume) her friends, and it adds to the book. Looking at alphabet after alphabet as is done in typical calligraphy books, you don't get a good feel for how you'd use each one, and variations you can apply. Her other book "Calligraphy Projects for Pleasure and Profit" (which I also have) gives you lots more along these lines, but the ones in this book are different and I find them just as valuable.

I even like the way she letters the whole book in her (what she admits is slightly idiosyncratic) italic hand. You want examples - there's a whole book-length example. I don't agree with the other reviewer that this detracts from the book. It's as if she does it because it's fun - an important thing to remember when you're doing the drudgery of straight lines or circles.

The only tiny drawback, if it is one, is that the book doesn't contain a lot that is good to know about techniques of setting up a drawing table, selling, etc. For that (as well as an excellent chapter on type design by Hermann Zapf himself), the book "Calligraphy and Illumination" provides more than you ever wanted to know. I don't think that book replaces this one, however. I find Margaret's explanations well worth the small amount this book costs, and she is much more complete. She'll even autograph it for you (see her web site for details).

This is a wonderful book that every calligraphy student should have. If you can only have one, this is it.
