Book Description
Rare is the opportunity to see, much less own, an original. Economics by Paul Samuelson is the classic texbook that gave birth to modern economics, and sold millions of copies in more than 40 languages. Now, in this unique and carefully crafted reproduction edition, Samuelson's original words, text, and layout are recreated from the original classic edition. More than just a historical curiosity, however, this book's power to explain economics to both the expert and the novice shines on every page. As fascinating now as when they were first published in 1948, the wisdom and applicability of Samuelson's words remain vital in today's turbulent economic world.

How can there only be 4 reviews on a book that is considered one of the top-five most important economic books of all time (Smith, Keynes, Samuelson, Schumpeter, etc.)?
Armchair Economist: Economics & Everyday Life by Steven E. Landsburg has 53 reviews.
Wow.
Still the best introduction to the principles of economics.......2004-09-14
Samuelson's Economics is simply the best book available for any individual attempting to obtain an understanding of basic economics.Chapter 2 of the first edition lays out the foundation for an understanding of the different schools of macroeconomics by examining the micro foundation of macroeconomics-the production possibilities frontier(PPF) model. In this path breaking book,Samuelson called the PPF by its other name, the transformation curve.Chapter 11 then ties the student's knowledge of the PPF directly to the problem of insufficient(or too much)investment spending over time.Samuelson ,like Keynes, identifies the intertemporal problem of optimal investment expenditure as THE fundamental problem of all capitalist economies. The extreme volatility and unpredictability of aggregate investment expenditure over the business cycle IS the cause of involuntary unemployment.Samuelson then carefully explains the paradox of thrift in relation to where on the PPF the macroeconomy is operating. If the economy is operating on the boundary of the PPF then the microeconomic optimality conditions of the marginalist calculus, based on the rationality principle of classical and neoclassical economic theory, will reflect resource scarcity.A negative relationship will exist between consumption goods expenditure and investment goods expenditure.Such a smooth tradeoff over time can only mean that investment is NOT volatile and/or unpredictable over time.Private sector investment is as stable and predictable as private consumption spending over time in classical and neoclassical theory .CLASSICAL and NEOCLASSICAL economics is the study of economies operating, with minor inventory flucuations over time, primarily on the boundary of the PPF.This is a special theory that is contained in the Keynesian(neokeynesian)general theory that includes the usual case of the private sector operating IN THE INTERIOR of the PPF.In the interior of the PPF,the optimality conditions of neoclassical economics break down and fail to hold.IN THE INTERIOR the relationship between consumption goods and investment goods is positive, not negative.More savings does not lead to more investment but to less investment as businessmen cut back on the use of their capital stock in the face of decreasing current sales(and decreasing future expected sales)and rising inventories of unsold stocks of goods. This leads to further declines in the capacity utilization rate of the capital stock. The economy moves deeper into the interior of the PPF.More and more individuals are involuntarily laid off.The fall in incomes then negatively impacts consumption goods spending .A cumulative negative downward spiral, deeper and deeper into the interior of the PPF,LEADS TO MORE AND MORE UNEMPLOYMENT.This view of the business cycle is the opposite of the neoclassical view that the problem is naturally self correcting as business inventories adjust over time.It emphasizes the unadjustability of a fixed capital stock. Samuelson's solution, like Keynes's,is for the public sector to provide an offset to decreasing levels of private investment spending by increased public infrastructure spending. The multiplier process will then lead to increasing incomes ,creating expectations of future profits for businessmen.Private investment will increase, moving the economy back to a position on the boundary of the PPF.Neoclassical economics would then be operational. In summary,no other principles book(or intermediate or graduate level textbook)has ever said it better than Samuelson.Master this book and you will know economics.
Liberal economics.......2000-10-26
Mr. Samuelson is most undeniably a great economist, and a great liberal, but from the distant past. As a textbook writer I find him very poor; even irrelevant. He has a way of presenting the subject in a technical/mathmatical way that leaves the reader no better off at all at understanding and discussing the basic economic issues of the day. Besides that he was a remarkably biased teacher/textbook writer. He will perhaps go down in history as the man who said that Russia was a great example of how well a planned economy can perform (even though it really just impoverished its citizens) and that Milton Freidman's work was mistaken (even though it finally became intellectually dominant and was used by the Fed to create the current economic miracle). If you had a choice to spend two semesters plowing through Samuelson or a weekend reading "Capitalism and Freedom" or "Understanding The Difference Between Democrats and Republicans" you'd be wise to pick the later. You'd learn 10 times as much in a fraction the time.
Highly recommended to haters of this dreary subject........1999-01-05
Absolutely easy to read and understand! I never thought I could actually "enjoy" reading about the subject before I came across this book.
The original edition is much better than the one I studied........1998-12-24
I was amazed to discover how good the original edition of Samuelson's classic economics text is. Virtually everything in it is just as relevant today as it was in 1948. Of special interest to me was chapter 10, Personal Finance and Social Security, for the light it sheds on the current debate about retirement income security. I think Samuelson ECONOMICS 1 ed. would be my textbook of choice for a course in introductory economics.

Love the Diffferent Results.......2007-06-16
Everyone (really) needs to read/apply this great Field Guide. Do not be intimidated if you have not been in the field with Rolf, jump right in for the fun. You will get awesome results spending time ootching through the pages gleaning the gems that shine through the many aha moments.
Rolf is practical at all levels of life. I have applied The 7 Levels of Change in my family life as well as my business life. When you run up against a question as you embark on diffferent thinking just check in with Rolf for more answers. You will be delighted.
Take a Thinking Expedition to Excellence.......2007-06-07
This book is a great addition to your ready reference library. It's a practical, hands on approach to creative thinking and innovation - words that Rolf points out "scare" some people today but make perfect sense to some more "experienced." Rolf writes in down-to-earth easy-to-understand language. He challenges your thought forms and encourages intellectual growth that sets you free from boundaries. The process Rolf describes gets you out of your comfort zone in a fun and engaging way (Try mountain climbing with him). At the same time he acknowledges individual beliefs and values as important foundations from which you draw strength (so every idea is not automatically discarded). This book is easy to use - it's organized to allow you to jump around as a reference work or to read straight through as a learning tool. There is space to write in the margins - in fact, Rolf has written some of his own comments in the margin - which allows you to personalize the book as your reference. Versatile, this book works for both personal (individual) as well as organizational (collective) development. It is based upon years of innovation workshops and "Thinking Expeditions" since the mid-1980's -- with real people in real organizations trying to accomplish great things through idea generation. I participated in one of these workshops back in 2001 and then read the first edition of this book. The principles and techniques described work and this new third edition is even better than the first. I highly recommend Rolf's book, his ideas and his program.
Transformational.......2005-10-12
I received my first copy of the first edition of this book as part of a thinking expedition held by Texaco to redefine their approach to Knowledge Management. I was a deep skeptic and was converted by working through the seven levels of change. The second edition of the book is even better than the first. I've given away several copies of this book and keep coming back for more.
Really a six star book.......2005-06-24
I don't know what these other people are thinking. On a scale of 1 to 5, this book is a 6. I've now done the Innovation Ground School and a thinking expedition with Rolf and Durwin Sharp, and my hair is till on fire. Anyone who doesn't read this book is a bozo. Everyone should call up Rolf and sign up to do the Innovation Ground School, then the School for Innovators. Let's keep these two guys working until they are well into their 90's, which is only a few years I hear.
But seriously, (well as seriously as an ENTP can be) this book helps you remember all the stuff you got at the IGS or a Tx. I haven't done the SfI yet, but I'm hopeful to be in Estes Park this fall. This is serious work for innovators. If you've struggled with making innovation work at your company, these are the guys to talk to. This is the book to buy. I'm getting 5 of them so I can loan them to colleagues at work when I work with them. The book will probably help you a lot if, but the Innovation Ground School is the best place to start. Your hair will catch on fire about day two and it will stay that way for the rest of your life, if you pay attention.
Buy this book. Buy extra copies of this book. Give this book to people who don't understand you. Show them where you are on page 248 and where you think they are. You'll both benefit from this book. BUY THIS BOOK!
different thinking, different book.................2003-03-11
Not only being a student of Rolf's School for Innovators, Thinking Expeditions, as well as a reader of his first edition of The 7 Levels of Change........this 2nd edition is REALLY a significant mindshift and a MUST read for anyone truely wanting to understand the change process......I am a Personal Life Coach and work with individuals in achieving their goals which are always based around SOME change if not RADICAL change and I use the 7 Levels constantly.......I have used them to develop programs that not only explain change but navigate you through the maze that most books get lost in....there are so many examples, so many tools, so many new ideas in the 2nd edtion that I agree with Rolf when he said " I should have written this book the first time around"....great luck on your journey, you are being guided by the best!!!!!!

Book Description
Production from tropical agricultural systems will need to increase to satisfy the rising food demand of an increasing population coupled with changes in consumption patterns. At the same time, the agricultural sector is a significant source of greenhouse gases (GHG) in many developing countries, which can be attributed mainly to land-use change and methane emissions from rice and livestock. But how can we reconcile less GHG emissions from tropical agricultural systems while increasing productivity?
Due to the interactive nature of these issues, this book is compiled of articles on natural resource management, as well as the socio-economic aspects of GHG mitigation. The scope of mitigation options in tropical agriculture is discussed for three different activities: (a) agroforestry; (b) rice-based production systems; (c) pasture/animal husbandry.
Agronomic solutions alone will not be sufficient, as the institutional and economic frameworks within which farmers operate dictate whether a recommended agronomic management practice is acceptable. The prevention of deforestation, and the re-forestation of degraded land, could become key elements to national climate protection programs of some developing countries. Alternative management practices in rice-based and pasture systems may offer win-win options to reduce emissions and improve resource-use efficiencies.
Book Description
Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, one of the most comprehensive and authoritative works in the field of prokaryotic systematics is undergoing an extensive revision that will ultimately culminate in a five volume Second Edition. Arrangement of the content of the Second Edition follows the now familiar and well regarded phylogeny of the 16S rRNA gene, yet retains much of the layout of the First Edition. Volume 1, encompassing the Archaea, Deeply Branching and Phototrophic Bacteria was published in 2001. We are pleased to announce that work on Volume 2, The Proteobacteria, has been completed. This culminates a four year effort by Bergey's Manual Trust and more than 150 internationally recognized authorities to provide a comprehensive view of the Proteobacteria, the largest prokaryotic phylum.
At present, there are roughly 6250 named species of Bacteria, and the Proteobacteria represent the single largest phylum. Encompassing 72 families and including descriptions of 425 genera and over 1875 named species, the volume will be subdivided into three sub-volumes: The Gammaproteobacteria (Part A), The Alphaproteobacteria (Part B) and the Beta-, Delta-, and Epsilonproteobacteria. Also included are new introductory chapters specific to the phylum. The Proteobacteria also represent the most diverse group of bacteria, metabolically and ecologically. Moreover, the Proteobacteria contain many of the clinically relevant species of Bacteria and are of significance in human, animal and plant health. As a result, this volume caters to the broadest audience and the set is an essential reference for the microbiologist. Most importantly, medically important species appear in all three sub-volumes.
Customer Reviews:
Bergey's Manual comes in two very different forms, each good.......1998-10-16
Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology is a four-volume set covering virtually every known species of bacterium; articles on each species and extensive articles on higher taxa describe a great deal of value to the undergraduate microbiology student or teacher, often including hard to find information about culture methods and ecological roles. The high cost and heavy format of the four large hardbound volumes make them unsuitable for use in the laboratory, however. Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology is a lower-cost, paperback companion volume containing very brief genus descriptions but extensive tables of biochemical and growth charateristics necessary for the laboratory identification of bacteria. Student labs should include these paperback volumes near every workstation; once students have identified their bacteria, a trip to a departmental library or reading room to learn more about the organism from the four-volume set is in order. Together, these volumes are indispensible for any well-equipped microbiology program.

Book Description
Animal rights extremists argue that eating meat is murder and that pets are slaves. This compelling reappraisal of the human-animal bond, however, shows that domestication of animals is not an act of exploitation but a brilliantly successful evolutionary strategy that has benefited humans and animals alike.
Customer Reviews:
Udder Nonsense .......2005-02-28
The Covenant of the Wild is an example of anti-animal rights propaganda masquerading as science. For readers with an interest in this genre, it is worth reading.
Readers with a limited knowledge of natural history or who are unused to careful critical thinking will likely come away with a gross misunderstanding of the history of domestication and a biased view of the animal rights and the environmental movements. It is unclear whether Budiansky sets out to deceive his audience or is just poorly informed.
There is good evidence in the psychology literature that one's early childhood experiences can have a lasting effect on one's outlook. Budiansky explains that he was raised without exposure to animals. This might explain his bias and his projection that no one knows the source of meat or how animals behave other than farmers or hunters. He now feels, after moving to a farm and raising sheep, that he is an expert on animal behavior and animals' desires. Udder nonsense.
In the preface to the 1999 paperback edition, Budiansky writes:
"...we are the only species capable of conceiving of the pain and suffering of another; ... we are the only species capable of understanding the consequences of our actions or our inaction."
Writers in this genre uniformly struggle to name the characteristics that somehow set us apart from other animals and give us a right to hurt them. Budiansky's claim is illustrative of the scientific illiteracy, or selective consideration of evidence that afflicts writers in this area. The premier example of members of other species being aware of, being concerned with, and acting to protect others may the 1964 paper published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, "`Altruistic' Behavior in Rhesus Monkeys." Budiansky must be unaware of the research in this area.
Budiansky sprinkles similar ignorant claims throughout his text. He revisits the claim that monkeys were necessary to the development of the polio vaccine but doesn't mention the fact that in 1984, Albert Sabin, who developed the oral polio vaccine, swore under oath to the U.S. House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Hospitals and Health Care of the Committee on Veterans' Affairs that "the work on [polio] prevention was long delayed by an erroneous conception of the nature of the human disease based on misleading experimental models of the disease in monkeys."
Overall, even if one discounts his factual errors as simple ignorance, his argument that domestic animals were, in some twisted sense, willing participants in our early domestication of them is poorly argued and fraught with internal inconsistency and contradiction. I'm amazed that such gibberish came from the pen of a past editor at the journal Nature, but maybe this helps explain the journal's unwillingness to examine the ethical implications of our discoveries about other animals' minds and emotions.
For anyone other than a student of the anti-animal propaganda, or someone seeking to salve his or her own dislike of progressive views, this book will largely be a waste of time.
Thought provoking ideas about domestication.......2003-08-01
Despite the other reviewers that dislike this book and the ideas presented in it, I found it fascinating. I have a suspicion that negative reviewers were people with an extreme animal rights philosophy (very different than animal welfare and often confused by the lay person). This book does not concentrate on modern animal agriculture or a defense of it (many aspects of which I do not like), but instead explores the process of domestication and the relationship between domestic animals and humans. Other reviewers comments that suggest Budiansky says things such as, battery hens _like_ to live in small cages, indicates to me that they did not get the point of this book. Budiansky doesn't suggest that animals like to be mistreated, he suggests that a strategy for a species to survive may have been to pair its fate with humans. If you want to learn more about the evolution of and scientific principles behind the strategy of domestication, you will find this book to be illuminating!
Science for the Lay Reader.......2002-07-30
I found this a fascinating book with a wealth of information and arguments that are stated cogently. It is well-written and very readable. I have recommended it to many friends and given it as a present. I have read most of Mr. Budiansky's books (other than the code-breaking one) and, although I was not as happy with the second book and with the book about horses, I still found them good reading. Wth regard to the book about cats, a subject on which I have tried to do research, I found that his statement of facts and theories did, for the most part, jibe with those of serious researchers on the subject of animal behavior in general and cats in particular.
Interesting but some if its views are revolting.......2002-05-04
I obtained this book as a new paperback for the princely sum of £..., evidently as it was in a reject shop.
I went for this book as a scientific read and it does contain some useful and valuable insights on domestication. However the book fell far short of describing chicken, dog and cat domestication which is the sort of stuff on which I wanted to find out. The one point I liked was a bit for my study on squirrels, that squirrels invented farming first or words to that effect - at least in mammals. The book then descends to a ramble about why you have to be cruel to be kind.
Though I could see some valid points against animal rightists he then took it to extremes. "Every boy has not lived who has not pulled a trigger" I paraphrase. What nonsense. I delight at the time I pointed a gun at an eagle and then paused and did not shoot. I delight I never shot any birds though I wanted to. ... We can't afford to lose and abuse wild animals, let alone how we treat domestics at times.
Nonsense and non-science!!.......2001-05-01
Or perhaps I should have said Nazi-science. Extremist Budiansky seems to have picked up where the likes of the Nazi-mentality left off. This absurd diatrbe should certainly not be listed amongst any legitimate science writings as it has nothing to do with real science, but rather, the author attempts to pass off his hateful agenda of others, as science; nonsense. Do yourself a favor---save your hard-earned money, you certainly won't be missing anything with this one....except precious time.

Contains negligent misleading information.......2007-03-28
I bought an earlier edition of this book, along with Hiking Wyoming by the same publisher.
I didn't get to either of those states yet to try out any of the hikes but I did notice that both books contain the identical information about bears -
they don't distinguish between black and grizzly bears and the advice they give is TOTALLY WRONG for black bears and likely to get someone killed!
They clearly didn't do their research properly (if at all) in this case - I hope the rest of the book is better quality!
Decent, but incomplete.......2004-12-29
The book's information and descriptions for the trails it has are decent, but it's missing quite a few of them I personally know in the Missoula area. Some of the lesser known trails' omission is forgivable, but not listing Blue Mountain? I mean, come on. That would be like listing attractions in San Diego, and not mentioning the zoo.
If you're hoping for an end-all reference encylopedia of Montana trails like I was, this ain't it. But, if you're happy with a rather spotty listing of trails mostly focused around waterways, this is your book.
A hike planners dream........2000-05-02
I plan the hikes for my Boy Scout Troop and we do a 50 miler each summer. This book is up to date and accurate. We can find the best places with RELIABLE information! Even the forest service can't give us as much information as this book.

poor information about book.......2007-08-09
Be aware, this book was printed in 1994. So, the "Present" is 1994. Meaning 5.0 engines only. No good for my 97 cobra. The book seemed to have good info for 5.0s though. Lots of black and white pics.
To present>.......2006-03-28
Title lists as applicable to present- doesn't cover newer mustangs, only 5.0 engines, not 4.6. no help at all.
WAITING.......2005-09-07
I'd like to reveiw this book as I have waiting to receive this book. I'll be waiting for this book to be shipped.

Good overall review, racing focus.......2005-09-01
The reason this book is not five stars is that I'm building my car for street use and the author tends to focus on motorsports. So while some subjective remarks like "the stock rollers are garbage" may be very true in a road racing application they may not be true for a high performance street application. Regardless there are still some real gems and if you follow the recomendationas you will build a bulletproof, if not cheap, powertrain.
tres bon livre pour modèle injection.......2005-01-11
Ce livre est très claire et précis, le seul point qui ma déçu c'est qu'il parle seulement des modèles injection. Mais pour le reste pas un mots a dire, j'ai adoré.
