    Book Description

The emphasis of this book is on understanding special characteristics of the financial systems of emerging markets, where the existence of market imperfections such as asymmetric information, adverse selection and moral hazard can cause financial market failures. Considering the Thai stock market as an example, this book provides an econometric study of a typical Asian financial system. Many contemporary techniques and models are used in this study, including simple multivariate regression, multi-factor model, exponential smoothing, Holt Winter’s models, and GARCH type models. The findings of the existence of rational bubbles, anomalies, volatility and other characteristics reveal evidence of inefficiency in the Thai stock market. Based on these results, the book includes justifications for public policies in such economies and makes suggestions for further research areas.

    Book Description

"Welcome to a world where imagination is the source of value in the economy. It's an insane world, and in an insane world, sane organizations make no sense."

    -- Tom Peters

Tom Peters has for the past twelve years been telling American business that the rules have changed. Now he goes farther in The Tom Peters Seminar, the first in an exciting new series aimed at helping everyone -- Fortune 500 chairmen, middle managers trying to hold on to their place on the ladder (a mistake!), and hotel housekeepers -- thrive in the brave new world of business in the nineties. He presents the provocative and sometimes scary analysis and advice that have led thousands from all over the globe to attend his trademark seminars. The bold new ideas vault business people beyond reengineering, beyond total quality management, beyond empowerment, and even beyond change, and toward nothing less than reinvention and revolution. The result is a timely audio loaded with "how-tos" for mastering the new economy.

5 out of 5 stars Ever want to attend a Tom Peters Seminar?.......2007-04-13

Ever want to attend a Tom Peters Seminar? I read this when the uber-guru was at his most popular, and for a variety of reasons, it wasn't feasible. This book marks a divergence from his position as a leading edge advisor to senior management, to an over-the-bleeding-edge exhorting firebrand to middle management. This is meant in the best of senses. It pushes towards getting close to his customers (old news by now) but in a practical, "Set up X meetings with weird customer..." sense.

Years later I heard Mr. Peters speak in person, and my takeaway was the book does indeed capture his energy, as much as it's possible. It's no substitute for the real thing, but it's an admirabe replacement if that isn't possible.

5 out of 5 stars Though some 12 years old, it is still surprisingly current!.......2006-07-13

Somehow I missed reading THE TOM PETERS SEMINAR when
it first came out in 1994 . . . it is a version of what he
charges business executives $2,000 or so to attend.

I just heard the taped version and though it is some 12 years
later, the material is still surprisingly current--if you can
overlook the examples of corporations that are no longer
around . . . this is made possible because of the fact, to
quote the subtitle, CRAZY TIMES CALL FOR CRAZY
ORGANIZATIONS . . . methinks that is true not only
in 2006, but will still be the case another 12 years from now.

As Peters notes, "Do something. Make things happen. It's
inaction that kills you." But what makes this author so
outstanding is that he just doesn't state a management
philosophy; rather, he shows by the use of real-life
companies and organizations how it can be implemented.

This particular program was narrated by Peters, which
added to my enjoyment . . . he is a dynamic speaker and, as
such, listening to him is even better than reading him.

By doing so, you'll gain some valuable insights as these:
    * Once people don't know each other, it's time to break up
the company. Typically, that's at around 50-60 people.

    * The average company suffers more from dullness than
    eccentricity.

    * Interview 25 customers. Ask: What's it like to do deal with us?

    * Update your resume twice a year. Forever.

    * Do you keep asking yourself: What can I learn next?

    * You must retool every 4-6 years.

    * You're as good as your Rolodex.

    * When you hire, look for passion, flexibility and excitement. And
for somebody WITH some glitches in his or her resume.

    * When you go to work, consider it from the viewpoint of a fearful,
    first-time employee.

    * Continually ask customers: Did you have a good time?

    * Be able to answer this question in 25 words or less: What
    makes you unique?

    * New products at Ben & Jerry's must pass this test: Is it
    weird enough?

5 out of 5 stars One of Tom's Best Books.......2006-05-05

This is essential Tom Peters. It is the beginnings of what he later wrote about in Re-Imagine! It may not have too much to implement in terms of process but definitely has plenty of thought adjustments that should be made to survive, NO THRIVE, in the new economy. It can help you regain your drive because Tom identifies many of the frustrating business practices that we all deal with and encourages you to get mad about it and do something about it.

This is a great book if you want to open your mind to new possibilities for your career. It helped shape my overall attitude about business by revealing some of what business can and must become. Much more concise and to the point and builds upon his prior, and more lengthy, books. It is one of his best if not 'the' best books he has written. Tom's energy is contagious. Worth every penny.

    1 out of 5 stars "Where's the Beef?!!".......2003-01-04

Nothing here that is implementable. This tape contains one message: CHANGE EVERYTHING. The entire book and tape revolve around this single message. Mr. Peters provides no implementable plan or suggestions on how to adapt this message to you, your department, or company. In fact, you have to ask yourself, "Is it truly necessary to change everything?" Most of us would have to say "No." In fact, this is more often than not a recipe for f-a-i-l-u-r-e. Instead, A RETURN TO BASICS is what is needed in 90-95.0% of the cases. However, my biggest complaint isn't that I believe Mr. Peters is wrong, it is that his recent books and tapes are filled with superfluous and outragious statements that fail to advance the listener's or reader's understanding of the concept. When I buy a management book or tape, I want information and concepts that I can quickly take to my company and implement to our mutual benefit. Unfortunately, Mr. Peters' recent works appear to be nothing more than pep-talks and cheerleading sessions. You have to ask yourself: "Where's the beef?"

4 out of 5 stars Tom Tom Club.......2000-10-06

With a Copyright of 1994, its a little dated, but the basic message remains clear. Innovate or become extinct. Tom's enthusiam is apparent with each chapter.

If you can overlook the examples of corporations that are no longer around, and listen to the concepts, ( refer of course to the audio version) its a great program.

For true members of Tom's movement, this book remains a variation on a theme. A must have for the "Work Matters crowd" a cheap substitute for his live programs. Or a great refresher course for someone that has been to one.

                        Book Description

Probably the most ubiquitous biochemical method used today for examining the genetics of individuals, populations, or phylogenetic relationships between taxa is electrophoresis. This book has been created to offer a viewpoint regarding current electrophoretic separation methodologies of macromolecules and their major applications to fisheries management. The chapters in this book have been selected and organized into three sections to create a carefully blended mixture of methodologies and applications designed to educate the novice, as well as stimulate interest in professional researchers currently using electrophoresis for their work. The first section includes chapters that discuss the principles that explain the genetic basis of multiple molecular forms of proteins, the theory and practice of DNA analyses, and the methodology of electrophoretic separation of these macromolecules; starch gel electrophoresis as the predominant electrophoretic tool for fisheries genetics; and protein isoelectric focusing and DNA analysis. The second section describes a variety of applications for electrophoretic techniques. The third section presents a discussion and results of experiments conducted by Dennis Powers and his associates regarding the physiological significance of multiple forms of enzymes using the fish Fundulus heteroclitus as a model system. The book features a catalog of nearly 100 enzyme staining recipes and covers new areas in electrophoretic work, such as DNA fingerprinting, genetic tags, mitochondrial DNA methodologies, and genomic manipulation of fish stocks. This book will provide a useful reference resource for fisheries biologists at federal, state, and local levels; fisheries researchers at universities; and students pursuing degrees involving research in fish genetics.

Seashells are often spirals, just like water going down the drain. There must be a connection, right? Our intuition scoffs at such a notion, but maybe they are related, writes Nature editor Philip Ball in The Self-Made Tapestry: Pattern Formation in Nature. This deep, beautiful exploration of the recurring patterns that we find both in the living and inanimate worlds will change how you think about everything from evolution to earthquakes. Not by any means a simple book, it is still completely engaging; even the occasional forays into mathematics and the abstractions of hydrodynamics are endurable, tucked as they are between Ball's bright prose and his hundreds of carefully selected illustrations.

When speaking of the living world, Ball seeks to go beyond the theory of natural selection, which explains why we see certain characteristics (height, shape, camouflage), to find mechanisms that can explain how such characteristics come to be. Again, this is no easy task, but for those willing to follow his discussion, the elegance of nature is laid out in zebras' stripes, ivy leaves, and butterfly wings. Moving on to find the same patterns at work in the clouds of Jupiter and the cracks in the San Andreas fault give strength to the feeling that there are self-composing structures that guide everything in the universe toward a kind of order. The Self-Made Tapestry is a challenging look at the biggest issues in science, and well worth a thorough read. --Rob Lightner

                        Book Description

Why do similar patterns and forms appear in nature in settings that seem to bear no relation to one another? The windblown ripples of desert sand follow a sinuous course that resemles the stripes of a zebra or a marine fish. In the trellis-like shells of microscopic sea creatures we see the same angles and intersections as for bubble walls in a foam. The forks of lightning mirror the branches of a river or a tree. l This book explains why these are no coincidences. Nature commonly weaves its tapestry by self-organization, employing no master plan or blueprint but by simple, local interactions between its component parts - be they grains of sand, diffusing molecules or living cells - give rise to spontaneous patters that are at the same time complex and beautiful. Many of these patterns are universal: spirals, spots, and stripes, branches, honeycombs. Philip Ball conducts a profusely illustrated tour of this gallery, and reveals the secrets of how nature's patterns are made.

This is one of the finest affirmations of Emanationism of the Neoplatonists, i.e. that complexity in nature doesnt require Supernatural causes as exposited by Creationists. While this book does not deal with philosophical-religious principles, that its premise is the explaination for complexity in nature as merely Phi (golden section) ratios, it does provide the backbone for Emanationism, of the metaphore for the Cosmos in Platos Repuplic 509d-511 wherein Phi is given as the principle Logos (ratio/'tapestry') behind complexity in nature.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful exploration of natural beauty.......2006-11-20

This is a lyrical celebration of natural beauty and underlying complexity. Not only that, the book itself is beautifully typeset, composed and arranged. A real pleasure to read, aesthetically and intellectually. Sheer wonder.

This is one of the best books i have read. Clear, in depth, and intelligent. Academic and also well written!
                        I highly recommend it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Sad.......2004-08-03

I hope some publisher will do the world a favor and keep this book in print. It's a classic that belongs on the shelf right next to D'Arcy Thompson's "On Growth and Form." This might seem strange for me to say, but if I were to design an educational curriculum for people learning my profession (oncology), this book would be mandatory. It is highly recommended for anyone interested in morphogenesis. If anyone knows where I can buy 10 or 20 unused copies, I'd appreciate hearing from you (wmshea@earthlink.net).

4 out of 5 stars The Self-Made Tapestry: Pattern Formation in Nature.......2004-02-06

The Self-Made Tapestry: Pattern Formation in Nature written by Philip Ball gives us some answers to long-standing questions as to why there are patterns in designs in nature that reoccur in seemly unrelated objects.

Biologists are used to the idea that form follows function. The shape and structure of a biological entity whether it is a protein molecule, an organism, or the wind blowing ripples in a sand dune all have a purpose and a function. These are things I was curious about when I was studying in college, things that caugh my attention as interrelated but how and why. Of course, things in my life became more complex, but these questions still always seemed to weigh in the back of my mind... A tree with limbs and a lightening bolt look simular and so too roots and nerves.

Well, "The Self-Made Tapestry" explains the why and how of why these simularities do exist. This book explains why these are not just coincidences. As nature weaves it tapestry through self-organization it employs no master plan it just applies simple local interactions between the component parts. The component parts inpart a common self-organization to energy conservation allowing for typically univeral patterns.

What I liked about this book is the author has put complex theories into non-technical language along with adequate illustrations show the reader how these patterns come about.

If you looking for a book on explains some of life's and nature's mysteries this is the book for you as it is highly readable and you begin to understand why things are as they are. The book reads like a textbook , the chapters build upon one another making for an accumilation of knowledge bases on a solid foundation from the start.

This book is a solid 4 stars giving the reader a adequate knowledge of the hows and whys of nature. This book only has very minor flaws, but that is all. I would highly recommend this book for you home science library as it would make a worthwhile addition.

                              Book Description

Although a working knowledge of neuroanatomy is necessary for clinicians, learning neuroanatomy in in depth is rarely an achievable goal of any veterinarian in practice. A Practical Guide to Canine and Feline Neurology provides the tools necessary to understand and be clinically proficient with the neurology cases faced in small animal practice. The book is arranged in a logical sequence based on the order of brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous systems. Opening chapters provide a review of pertinent neuroanatomy, a step-by-step guide to neurologic examination, and a brief overview of available neurodiagnostic tests. Once a neuroanatomic diagnosis is made, readers can consult the appropriate subsequent chapter for specific information required for their clinical case. Disease descriptions are succinct, designed for the busy practitioner, but extensive references are provided for further reading as desired. There are numerous illustrations. Figures and tables.A Practical Guide to Canine and Feline Neurology is an excellent reference source for general small animal practitioners, veterinary students, residents, specialists and anyone needing a refresher course on neurology before taking specialty board or state board examinations.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Most Excellent Guidebook.......2002-12-31

I know guidebooks. Retired in 1994, I now spend much time traveling with my canoes, mountain bike, and backpack. I have explored much of the western states, Alaska, and of course, living in North Carolina, the eastern states. Many of these expeditions were done solo with only a guidebook as a companion. My bookshelves are full of guidebooks. And I have found them to be a mixed blessing. Though valuable as a source of places to go, depending solely on the information contained in the guidebook can lead to some unexpected surprises, which is never a good thing in unknown territory.

It is therefore a pleasure to have a guidebook published that is accurate, descriptive, and contains virtually all the information needed to choose, plan, and implement a successful river trip, whether whitewater or flatwater. And did I say accurate?

I had the pleasure of accompanying Mr. Ferguson on many of his explorations for this book. It took me awhile to adjust to stopping on the river while he noted each unusual feature, alternate put-in, height of the banks, and seemingly every house into his ever-present tape recorder. God knows how many batteries he went through in his GPS. And the shuttles were always fun as we held up traffic while finding and double-checking each road name and number. But the end result is a guidebook that can be depended on to be correct in the mileage and the maps, which, by the way, are by far the best maps I have ever seen in any guidebook. I also have to say that Paul Ferguson is a delightful person to be with on any trip, even when unexpectedly stuck overnight in the middle of a swamp.

This book contains many unusual details that are not found in other guidebooks. One example is instead of giving each section of river a single rating for scenery, Ferguson breaks the section into two-mile segments and then gives a percentage of what is found in that section (i.e. A80%, B20%) which gives a much better picture of what will be encountered. Another example is that noteworthy features along the way are given with the mileage where thay will be seen.

With 469 pages of well thought out and sometimes painfully gained information, I think this book is an incredible value at only $19.95!

I have been reading this book for the last two days and am impressed with the detail of the trips, location of put ins, highways, mileage and other details that the author has added. I have paddled one third to one half of the rivers he describes and know the information to be accurate. A truely up to date book for anyone who likes to paddle these rivers.

5 out of 5 stars This is the ultimate guide to eastern North Car. rivers !.......2002-12-18

Finally, a book on paddling eastern N.C. rivers written by someone who actually paddled every single mile of them and who is a great writer with a keen sense of detailed observation and reporting skills! This book is far and away so much better than the previous old standard "Paddler's Guide" By Benner & McCloud.

As a "marathon" paddler who frequently paddles 30-40 mile trips in a single day, accurate mileage estimates for trips are extremely important to me. This is because if my mileage estimate are off by as little as low single digits, my take-out time could easily be after dark, not before it. I'm happy to report that Paul Ferguson absolutely nails his mileage estimates for various trips. For example, on the 30-plus mile section between the Roanoke Rapids put-in and the Highway 258 Bridge boating access area on the Roanoke River, his mileage estimate was within 1/10th of a mile of mine; very impressive indeed. This was one of two primary faults with the "Paddler's Guide": a lot of times, author Benner wasn't even close at times, sometimes being off as much as 15%-20%. This is corrected in this new book, thankfully.

The other major problem with Benner's "Paddler's Guide" was the he missed major, as in MAJOR points of concerns for canoeists, such as old washed-out dams, reasonably major Class II or so rapids and rock gardens, hard portages, etc. I never did figure out how he missed so many things if he ran those rivers, which he claimed he did.

Thankfully, Paul Ferguson, who actually did run all the rivers and major creeks listed in this book, noticed everything that's important to a paddler, and wrote it down. That's the main purpose of a guidebook such as this: to provide useful information about real-world conditions that you'll encounter out on the river, so you can make informed decisions before ever setting a canoe or kayak on them. He does so admirably.

BTW, I do not know the author in any shape, form, or fashion, nor am I associated with this book in any way. I'm just thankful someone has finally written a truly accurate guide to paddling eastern NC rivers!

Acknowledged as the nation's foremost expert on audience development involving America's growing multicultural population by the Arts and Business Council, Donna Walker-Kuhne has now written the first book describing her strategies and methods to engage diverse communities as participants for arts and culture. By offering strategic collaborations and efforts to develop and sustain nontraditional audiences, this book will directly impact the stability and future of America's cultural and artistic landscape. Donna Walker-Kuhne has spent the last 20 years developing and refining these principles with such success as both the Broadway and national touring productions of Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk, as well as transforming the audiences at one of the U.S.'s most important and visible arts institutions, New York's Public Theater. This book is a practical and inspirational guide on ways to invite, engage and partner with culturally diverse communities, and how to enfranchise those communities into the fabric of arts and culture in the United States.

Donna Walker-Kuhne is the president of Walker International Communications Group. From 1993 to 2002, she served as the marketing director for the Public Theater in New York, where she originated a range of audience-development activities for children, students and adults throughout New York City. Ms. Walker-Kuhne is an Adjunct Professor in marketing the arts at Fordham University, Brooklyn College and New York University. She was formerly marketing director for Dance Theatre of Harlem. Richard Francis Burton was essentially the first to produce an unexpurgated translation of this wonderful book of tales. Though Burton's English is often excessively stilted, Jack Zipes has quite handily adapted (and condensed from the original 10 volumes) this magical grouping of stories, as told by the enchanting Scheherazade, who tells the nightly tales to save her own life. A classic and must have for anyone's library.
