Book Description
The telecommunications industry is in the throes of rapid technological and regulatory change. Markets for terminals and services have been liberalized, and only the provision of networks has remained under the control of national operators. This book analyses from an economist's point of
view the benefits which may be expected from the introduction of network competition in Europe, and describes how competition can be reconciled with social objectives. The author discusses the convergence of broadcasting and telecommunications, network competition, policy in Europe and the USA, the
European Commission's approach, and a strategy for network competition in Europe which takes into account both the latest developments and the characteristics of the European environment.

Book Description
Propelled by deep technical, economic, and cultural changes, network utilities have, in the last twenty years, entered a new era. Since competition has been widely introduced and promoted, we have experienced a radical change in the structure of the industries and the role of the state authorities. Their role in managing monopolies has evolved into regulating new forms of markets, which has resulted in the creation of independent regulatory authorities. These new public bodies work with governments to try and reconcile the needs of competition and public service missions. This suggests the use of recent developments in economic theory to handle complex problems. This volume offers an exploration by scholars and regulators of the new regulatory regimes across Europe. The first part presents the pioneering experiences of the United Kingdom and Sweden. The United Kingdom has quickly chosen to establish powerful and independent individual regulators. Reforms in Sweden have been more gradual and regulators have, in the first instance, acted mainly as mediators. Part two is devoted to second wave developments that took place in various European countries, i.e. France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, countries where the legal tradition is less conducive to the concept of independent regulators. There the regulators are often (but not always) less powerful and meet more obstacles in their efforts to prevent either the formation of oligopolies or the resistance of incumbent monopolies. In Germany another problem has emerged as the federal tradition prevents the creation of independent regulators in certain key sectors. The contributions in the third part of the volume throw some light on the problems of coordinating national regulations. One can observe the continuous emergence of modes of cooperation between national regulators, as well as European authorities. Faced with certain categories of problem, the European authorities are themselves led to act as common regulators. The countries of central and eastern Europe, which are progressively converging towards the general economic model of the West, are more and more concerned with the accompanying regulation problems. Last but not least, the Internet raises worldwide problems of regulation that are beginning to be seriously considered.

Book Description
With over 45,000 acres of greenhouse vegetation currently being grown hydroponically throughout the world, hydroponics has become one of the most rapidly expanding new areas of plant research. Although growing plants without soil has been practiced since ancient times, hydroponics-the growing of plants specifically in water or nutrient solutions-has shown itself to be the most cost-effective way of maximizing yield, eliminating plant disease, minimizing labor costs and getting the most out of limited land resources. It's both an economically and ecologically sound approach to field-crop production and soil management.Successfully practicing hydroponics, however, requires a working knowledge of the mechanics of plant growth and a firm grasp of the hydroponics process. Hydroponics: A Practical Guide for the Soilless Grower clearly explains the basics of plant growth and development, the different methods of preparing and using hydroponic nutrient solutions, and hydroponic options for various environmental conditions. It gives the reader instructions for simple experiments and a number of helpful charts, tables and illustrations.Completely up-to-date, the book also describes, in detail, all the latest techniques for hydroponic growing. It addresses new challenges in the field such as growing food for astronauts, practicing hydroponics in inhospitable environments and updating nutrient element supplies for the demands of the next century. It's an ideal guide for anyone interested in plants and how they grow-from casual hobbyists and students to commercial growers and professional plant researchers.
Customer Reviews:
A "Practical" (??) guide.......2004-10-10
The title of this book indicates that it has some some of how-to information in it. But that is not the case at all. It has lots of information on the nutrient solution, but it not really helpfull if you are buying yours premixed.
The book totally lacks conclusions that is needed for decisions when setting up you own system. In other words not a how-to book, so only two stars since I'm so disappointed
Very helpful.......2002-05-31
I am not a pro, when it comes to hydroponics. That's why I got this book. It has helped me immeasurably.
I have been assisting a relative of mine, who is the director of a charter school in New England, to put together a hydroponics program for her science classes. (Our idea has been to give her students a tiny little bit of power over their own physical well-being, in case terrorists do more evil things to our economy). At any rate, this book is incredibly helpful to us.
The author of this is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia. He has decades of experience in agronomy, and in plant science in general. He has tailored this book for a wide audience, and assumes NO prior knowledge of the topic. He walks the reader through a very thorough, patient discussion of the value of various nutrients to a hydroponic system. There are graphs and charts to illustrate his points, but don't be scared off!! He makes his points quite clearly in the text.
After discussing the chemical basics of the topic, Professor Jones walks us through a careful comparison of the basic kinds of hydroponic set-ups. He explains water regulation, pest control, nutrient solution distribution, and a lot of other things I would NEVER have thought of if he hadn't directed my attention to them. There's a really good bibliography at the end, which lists a lot of related resources.
Basically, this book is really helpful. One word of caution -- it's more of an overview of what you will need to know, than an actual how-to book. If you're looking for a how-to book, try Howard Resch's titles. Still, this book will really help fill in a lot of blanks, and help you be confident that you know what you're doing. Two thumbs up!

Book Description
Revolutionary hydroponic/soilless advances are being achieved by efficiently improving results with the application of new concepts, methods, and equipment. The new edition of a bestseller, Hydroponics: A Practical Guide for the Soilless Grower has been revised to reflect these advances with new chapters that provide essential information on greenhouse design, function, and methods for crop production and management. With approximately 40% additional material in the second edition, the book is a state-of-the-art, comprehensive guide. The second edition begins with the concepts of how plants grow and then describes the requirements necessary to be successful when using various hydroponic and soilless growing methods. The major focus is on the nutritional requirements of plants and how best to prepare and use nutrient solutions for different plants using various growing systems under a wide range of environmental conditions. Supported by a wealth of tables, figures, and nutrient formulas the book provides clear explanations of the advantages and disadvantages of each hydroponic growth system. Appropriate for a wide audience, this edition is a practical guide, overview, and handy reference for advanced hobbyists, commercial growers, and researchers.

Book Description
The Penguin Dictionary of Biology defines some 6,000 terms relating to this rich, complex, and constantly expanding subjectfrom amino acids, bacteria, and the cell cycle to X-ray diffraction, Ychromosomes, and zygotes. Long established as the definitive single-volume source, the dictionary has now been extensively updated for its eleventh edition. With expanded encyclopedic entries to explain the most crucial concepts, it explores the very latest discoveries and developments, containing more than 400 new entries to take account of the latest thinking on genetics, human physiology, disease, and cell biology. All key botanical and zoological concepts as well as the core vocabulary of biochemistry, immunology, evolutionary theory, and ecology are defined in depth, making this the ideal reference for students, teachers, professionals, and amateur biologists.
Customer Reviews:
Not so good.......2006-12-06
I am a biology major and my professor suggested purchasing this dictionary. I did and have used it very few times. The times that I did used it I left with more questions than answers. If you do not speak the language of biology fluently this dictionary will be very confusing.
Maintain that resting potential, now! .......2006-12-02
The question was: what (or whatever) maintains the resting membrane potential nowadays! I always thought that it was the sodium pump (or Na K ATPase etc.). Recently, I heard: No, it is not the sodium pump that maintains the resting potential. So I checked both the Oxford and the Penguin Dictionaries of Biology. Oxford says that the resting potential is maintained by the sodium pump; however, the Penguin says it is the leaky potassium channels, and sodium pump plays a slight role. Well, it is one of those academic debates, it would seem--which really mean nothing--because nothing is at stake! The debate is from confusing maintenance, recovery, and repair--perhaps. Is it the resting potential (a thing being maintained) or is it the repolarization after a depolarization (a thing in recovery) that we are talking about? Is maintenance still maintenance if you spend energy in extruding the smaller atoms out--well: a running car can be maintained only by spending money? Perhaps, after all, it is only the usual confusion of the frogs in a well: they can only see the stars in their own horizons. The whole biological process has several components, and to know which is the one--well, just take one out and see if the process holds and functions. Which brick is the most important in a wall? Clearly, the truth is never simple, and possibly there is no such thing as the truth. Things evolve using all of the components--and are what they are. So, I guess it is always the context and it is always relative: point of view etc. There is no simple correct answer because the question is incorrectly formulated--without the necessary context. What is more important in the running of a car: the engine or the gas? So get both the Oxford and Penguin--they complement, and both are useful when viewed and understood in the right context: neither can replace the textbook; and no textbook replaces all the source materials--but you need to start somewhere. For a rich fantasy life read Ayul Zamir's Intern Beth. Now, whatever maintains that resting membrane potential!
Quick reference, good for college biology.......2005-03-06
I found this book to be a great reference in conjuction with a good textbook like Campbell's Biology. This dictionary helped me look up difficult concepts that were not always explained that well in my biology college classes. If you want a great resource for knowing the type of questions asked on college biology tests, get

Great reference book.......2005-02-27
I majored in biology and work in a lab, and I use this book quite frequently. Not all of us remember every single thing from school, and this book is perfect for a quick reminder of terminology and processes. It covers a great deal of common and uncommon topics, and provides great illustrations for some of the central concepts of life science. I recommend this book for anyone working in, studying, or interested in biology. It is much quicker than trying to go through your old notes or textbooks!
Not for biologists.......2003-01-28
I'm an upper level biology major at a 4-year university, and I think every term that I looked up was not in this book. Maybe it would be fine for people who know absolutely nothing about biology, but if you're looking for a book to give you something a little extra other than your biology text book, this is not it.

They're everywhere in the desert! Ground holes. Elevated holes. Divots. Mounds. The revised edition of this quirky and popular field guide helps curious visitors -- as well as seasoned naturalists -- sort through the often bewildering abundance of desert holes so they can find out who's behind all that digging. Includes over 60 drawings of desert animals, their holes, and their tracks, and over 50 full-color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great reference.......2006-09-02
We use it when camping and hiking. It is great if you are planning on visiting and/or camping in the Southwest. I would agree though that there needs to be more color pictures and more drawings to illustrate exactly what the author of this book is talking about. An excellent reference that makes visiting the desert so much more fun.
We love this book!.......2004-03-29
The previous reviewer is right: this book could use more illustrations. But we love it anyway. If you live in the Southwest, and especially if you have kids, you need this book. I keep giving our copy away, and since the local store doesn't order enough, here I am at Amazon!
Good information, but needs photos.......2001-05-31
This tiny book is chock full of information and organized in an easy-to-read format. Unfortunately, the detailed descriptions of the holes, burrows, and depressions did not in any way help me visualize them--especially because many are similar. It would have been extremely helpful to see photos of the "desert holes" and the animals/birds/insects that make/use these areas. There are some black and white pencil drawings; although scarce, they are helpful. If this book had photos, I would have given it a rating of 10 stars!

Paddling Illinois.......2001-11-25
This book is very informative. I do have a warning though. On page 44 Canoe Shack is listed as canoe rental. On November 24, 2001 I had scheduled a drop off with this outfitt. Canoe Shack never fullfilled its obligation. No explination was given. Perhaps the author should omit this outfitt in future editions.
really helped me a lot.......2000-07-03
This is a very useful book. It is easy to read and gets you where you want to be - on the water.
Illinois is a lot more fun than people realize.
Highly recommended for all canoeists and kayakers........2000-05-04
A native of Illinois, Mike Svob has canoed the steams of the Midwest for thirty years. In Paddling Illinois he draws upon his experience and expertise in showcasing sixty-four outstanding trips for canoe and kayak. Each trip route features detailed maps showing roads, put-ins and take-outs, significant rapids, mileage, fascinating points of interest, and other useful information. General summaries are provided covering camping opportunities, water levels, shuttle routes, access points, canoe rentals and/or shuttle services. Paddling Illinois is additionally enhanced information on fishing opportunities, river reading and maneuvers, and special safety factors. Highly recommended for both novice and experienced canoeists and kayakers.
An absolute MUST READ for every Illinois canoeist or kayaker.......2000-04-01
Paddling Illinois is very well orgnized and thoughtfully laid out. It is very reminiscent of the classic Wisconsin paddling guide book, Whitewater/Quietwater by Bob and Jody Palzer. I am a map nut and love the maps in this book. They are big, uncluttered, and easy to read. This book is chocked full of useful info. Be use to check out the Introduction and Appendixes. I found myself flipping through the book, reading the side bars that accompany many of the trip descriptions. They're great. If you paddle in Illinois, or plan to paddle here, buy this book. It's the best paddling guide to Illinois, and worth every penny!

Customer Reviews:
good for limited application.......2007-05-15
Does provide useful measurements, but was not really useful to me in the work I was doing. It has precise but narrow application and is for a person who produces violins- who already has/understands all other information regarding violin making. So, it is aptly titled, but I had hoped it would have a little more general information. I did not expect a comprehensive how-to, but would have liked a little more information on how the measurements are determined, drawn up, etc. I am more responsive to things presented visually rather than only numerically. My rating of it is based more on my expectation and experience of it than on its ultimate value as a source.
Begining Violin Constructors.......2005-06-19
This manuscript is very well written. I found that it contained a considerable amount of usefull data. I have purchased three of Mr Strobel's books and there is some overlap of data but they all contain information that helps clarify the secrets of the art of violin construction. Highly Recommended for aspiring Luthers.

Useful but shockingly disorganized.......2004-03-13
Somehow, when I was an apprentice, I didn't pay nearly enough attention to standard setup. For years, I've done penitence for my folly by painstakingly collecting measurements from any authoritative source I could find. With some skepticism, I bought this booklet to enhance my collection. On balance, I'm glad I did.
Strobel's data jibes quite well with what's taught at the Mittenwald school, and what I've learned from personal observation and such sources as Sacconi, Moeckel, the Hill books, and many VSA presentations. It's nice to have it all in one place and the author is free of any odd theories and strikes a sound, reasonable tone throughout. Measurements (in mm) are often given as ranges reflecting accepted practice, rather than a single number, as it should be.
Now the caveats: For a shop reference, this book is shockingly disorganized. The whole thing has a hobbyhorsiscal do-it-yourself quality, more like a chat with the author and a couple of handouts than a book. You really have to dig to find its nuggets of wisdom, which consist, primarily, of two detailed tables of standard measurements for violin, viola, and cello, and two detailed scale drawings of violin and cello setup. You will also find full-size bridge-curve templates, a reasonable discussion of bridge, bass bar, and sound post fitting, and some hints on eliminating cello wolf tones.
This material, if collected together, would occupy about nine pages. The rest of the book's 47 folios are filled with what I can only describe as junk, including egregious clip art, cartoons, portraits of Paganini, lists of maker's measuring tools (steel tape!), a table of the frequencies of standard pitches, a 200-word French-German-Italian-English dictionary of luthier's terms, a weak bibliography, and some exceedingly thin information about various historical instruments. Why did the author give us a full page of Ingres' often-reproduced Paganini portrait while cramming both of his valuable setup diagrams into a miserable half page?
Overall, you can't go wrong for the price, and you might just need to know in a pinch, say, the saddle height for a cello (12.5 mm). But I hope that the author, who seems to have at least eight books to his credit, would consider hiring an editor for his next venture.
"Must have" for hobbyists.......2003-01-28
This is a great book if you work on stringed instruments, from serious repairs to fixing up eBay finds. Even includes measurements for fractional sizes, so you can set up those tiny violins for all the Suzuki students.
Every maker of violin family instruments needs this book........2001-07-23
This little book is worth its weight in gold. It contains every measurement necessary for the correct setting up of instruments. It is an indispensable tool in my workshop. Definitely well worth the money.

Book Description
magCulture explores the very latest trends and creative design styles in contemporary magazines from around the world. Its scope ranges from mass marketed to experimental titles and includes 'Dazed & Confused' (UK), 'Eat' (Japan), 'Sony Style' (US) and 'Domus' (Italy). After Jeremy Leslie's introductory overview of the state of magazines, five illustrated essays follow all written by prominent figures in the field, focusing on consumer magazines, supplements, independent `microzines' and webzines. The main section is made up of examples of over 100 innovative international magazines, starting with front covers, moving through contents pages and navigation to the features pages. Short interviews, essays and comment pieces focus on key themes such as logo design, Japanese magazines, French fashion magazines and branding.

Worth Buying.......2007-03-19
The title said enough of it. Buy the book and you can learn lot more about editorial design and editorial part. Good luck!
More Designer Porn.......2005-07-17
This attractive book falls firmly into the category of what I call "designer porn". Like any number of design books that look to provide an overview of the latest wave in whatever field, it's both mouthwatering and entirely impractical. The six essays that open the book do a decent job of setting the context for what follows and providing an overview of consumer magazines, newspaper magazines, indie mags (mircrozines), corporate/brand magazines, and even web magazines, but the real-world designer is unlikely to find any helpful tips or advice (granted, the book isn't intended to do that to begin with). The 150 or so pages that follow are chockablock with beautifully shot examples of the latest and greatest magazine design from the late '90s and early '00s (almost all the examples are from Western Europe). Organized into sections on overall format, cover design, flow, typography, and photography, these make for great eye candy, and act as a sort of sourcebook for potential inspiration, but that's about it. Overall, it's a nice book, but almost all the examples are of magazines supported by fancy ads or fancy corporations. What would be nice is if someone could put together a similar book based on low-budget magazines. That's something that would transcend the usual designer porn and actually be useful to more of us.
Just ok..........2005-07-10
I am a magazine designer always on the lookout for new books addressing the topic. This one was...just ok. Most of the showcase designs are too abstract to really apply in most small publication markets. Not a total waste, but there are far better books on the topic (such as "Suprise Me" or "Magazine Design That Works")
