Since 1986, when America's current perception of a drug abuse crisis in the workplace began, many challenges and potential solutions have been identified. As we enter the 1990s, real progress in awareness and action has been made in many public and private American workplaces. However, the most important accomplishment--actual reduction in the number of persons using drugs in the workforce--is considerably more difficult to achieve. Research is being conducted in a number of employment settings to document how this can be done. While the results to date are encouraging, it is also clear that much remains to be done. Evidence from the national research reported in this book shows that many organizations regard their achievements on this front as modest at best, even though they have installed systematic programs aimed at reducing the problems of worker drug abuse. The organizational change approach required to achieve drug-free workplaces is the main subject of this book. Based upon findings from a three-year national research study, Thomas Backer and Kirk O'Hara examine what has been done to combat drug abuse in the workplace. They place the results of their inquiry within the larger context of organizational change theory. The critical secondary issues of responses to AIDS in the workplace and containing employer health care costs through managed care are also addressed. This book's focus on programmatic responses to workplace drug abuse at the day-to-day implementation level will be welcomed by substance abuse professionals, designers and directors of employee assistance programs, human resources and benefits professionals, and managers concerned about substance abuse in the workplace.

Environmental sustainability is a long term view for future generations. It focuses on the soil, water and vegetation. It looks at water and rangelands and their ability to continue to support livestock indefinitely.

Having satisfied the tests of environmental sustainability, producers must consider what is the most profitable enterprise mix? This requires re-examination every year because of changing markets, technology, cost of inputs and other factors that determine profit. Managers must be able to work it out and do the calculations.

If the enterprises pass both tests, grazing and farming will be viable. The environmental tests consider viability for future generations. The economic tests must be re-applied every year as nobody can guarantee costs, prices or technology for the long term.

Great biology book.......2006-03-15

I had to purchase this book for my Biology class in college. We worked through most of the first chapters and skimmed through the end but for the parts I did study, I found the book easy to read and straightforward.

There are several images on nearly every page to help better explain the concepts. It covers a very broad spectrum of Biology elements and is ideal for anyone interested in learning on their own or who just wants a quick refresh on certain subjects.

This product is highly recommended.

Nice try, but (sadly) no cigar!.......2001-08-18

The authors write in an engaging and animated style, and the "issues approach" to biology introduced in this text is an excellent way to introduce the material. Non-science students in particular will benefit from such interesting-- and sometimes even exciting-- demonstrations of the importance of the topics covered.

Unfortunately, the book fails to live up to its ideal, and does so right from the start. Chapter One, for example, is so full of mistakes, oversimplifications and downright silliness that I would be embarrassed to assign it to my students! There are errors of dates, misleading definitions of concepts (sometimes even conflicting with the books own glossary), and inept treatments of non-scientific concerns (ethics and religion). The "thought questions" throughout the book frequently tend to be written in leading ways that suggest which answers will be "acceptable." Although the book tries hard to bridge "the two cultures," the reader is constantly reminded that science is one thing (defined by its rigorous method), and all other human efforts are "other" (nonfalsifiable, therefore "anything goes"!)

As a biology text, this is quite successful. Topics and explanations are accurate, clear and simple. It is a pity that the authors' laudable attempt to connect the science to significant social, ethical, and political issues is not similarly clear and well-informed. I fear that in the long run such carelessness may do more harm than good.

Putting Biology in Context.......2000-05-16

Biology Today, An Issues Approach gives a refreshingly innovative perspective to biological science. When so many texts seem to be clones of each other, this book addresses the same concepts in a completely new way -- through a series of pertinent and often controversial applications of scientific knowledge. I was led to this text after an exhaustive search for a book which would cause my students to think critically about the biological issues which they see every day in the news. Minkoff and Baker's book is the only one of its kind I have been able to find which meets the requirements for my course. In addition, on-line supplementary material is invaluable for providing possible essay topics, research areas, lecture outlines, etc. I highly recommend this book to all teachers who are considering establishing a course in biology that seriously challenges the students to look beyond the headlines and evaluate biological issues in light of their own ethical and social perspective.

Excellent book, a must have for zoologists.......2006-06-03

I am a zookeeper in an accredited zoological institution and this book is a must read as we care for captive animals. A comprehensive enrichment program is critical for wild animals in captive environments as these programs provide the animals with choices, complexities, and change. The guiding principle for enrichment is based on the animal's natural history. This book very appropriately emphasizes the requirement of enrichment for the animal's well being. Read this book and it will give you hope.

This is my must have book (bible) for my research on environmental enrichment. If you work with animals in a captive situation, you need to read this book. The book also deals with stereotypy. A lot of excellent information on enrichment and its implications for captive animals. If you are at all interested in environmental enrichment or currently implement an enrichment program for your animals, do yourself a favor and read this book.

A nice surprise.......2004-04-15

I bought "Ethics on the Ark" at the same time as this book, and was disappointed with that book. This book, however, was a very nice surprise. I felt it gave a unbiased view of captive animal enrichment, and the ethics behind keeping animals in captivity. I appreciated the completeness of this book, starting from a historical perspective, straight through to modern reasoning. I would say this is a must have for anyone working with animals in a captive environment.

A book that had to be written. This book is a good and basic guide for people working or interested in environmental enrichment. Several aspects are covered by the book, from theoretical bases to the implications to use enrichment for the conservation and welfare of wild animals. However, although it gives a lots of examples on mammals and some on reptiles, it forgets birds.

Comprehensive guide to the Bob.......2007-08-15

Erik Molvar has written numerous hiking guides for Falcon; this one is probably his magnum opus. Comprehensive and thoroughly researched, it's replete with natural history notes as well as hike descriptions and directions to trailheads.

The sheer size of the Bob Marshall Complex presents a particular challenge to a would-be author of a hiking guide, namely, how to encompass its breadth without making every hike a hundred miles in length. Molvar's solution is to segregate particular sections of trail into hikes whose starting and ending points lie conveniently at or near the junctions of other trails, which he in turn describes in other hikes. You can thus piece them together to create trips of your own design. He also includes side trips (such as to summits in the interior) and numerous day hikes along the margins and boundaries of the Bob.

Appendices include segmented mileages of trunk trails that provide access to more remote portions of the wilderness (I appreciate the meticulous mileage notes throughout the book), and descriptions of several classic extended trips such as Spotted Bear to Benchmark and Benchmark to Holland Lake. Also covered are hikes in adjoining roadless areas (such as the Rocky Mountain Front and Jewel Basin) that lie outside the wilderness proper.

Molvar has seemingly tromped every mile of the places he describes. Buy this book and follow in his footsteps.

If you are going to The Bob..........2007-02-01

If you really want to know about trails in The Bob Marshall Wilderness area this is covers the most important trails. The hike descriptions and profiles are quite helpful in planning a trek. I have used this book a few times although it is a bit heavy to carry on the trail. Use it to plan and take a copy of the hikes needed to cover your trek.

A Must Read.......2000-06-15

If you are planning a trip to the Bob Marshall you will do yourself a great favor by purchasing this book, then wrapping it in a zip-lock bag for your journey. The book provides a comprehensive overview of every trail in the Wilderness area. It gives a succinct synopsis of each trail by describing level of difficulty, frequency of maintenance, and elevation change. The book further describes the ecosystem that you are hiking thru and assists you in understanding the bio-diversity of each area. Perhaps most valuable, the book also provides a precsient review of the hazards of each seperate area--and methods of countering these hazards. These hazards include micro-organisms in the water and of course the ever-present grizzly and black Bears. Don't leave home without it!
