    Book Description

Over the past two decades, not only has supply chain analysis become a strategic focus of leading firms, it has also spawned an impressive array of research that brings together diverse research communities. Adding to this diversity and intellectual energy is the emergence of E-Business. E-Business creates new competitive dimensions that are fast-paced, ever-changing, and risk-prone, dimensions where innovation, speed, and technological savvy often define success. Most importantly, E-Business challenges the premises and expands the scope of supply chain analysis. The Handbook is a comprehensive research reference that is essential for anyone interested in conducting research in supply chain. Unique features include:

-A focus on the intersection of quantitative supply chain analysis and E-Business,
-Unlike other edited volumes in the supply chain area, this is a handbook rather than a collection of research papers. Each chapter was written by one or more leading researchers in the area. These authors were invited on the basis of their scholarly expertise and unique insights in a particular sub-area,
-As much attention is given to looking back as to looking forward. Most chapters discuss at length future research needs and research directions from both theoretical and practical perspectives,
-Most chapters describe in detail the quantitative models used for analysis and the theoretical underpinnings; many examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate how the models and the theoretical insights are relevant to real situations,
-Coverage of most state-of-the-art business practices in supply chain management.

Audience: This volume is suitable for researchers, faculty, graduate students, and practitioners in the following areas: supply chain management, operations research, management science, decision science, industrial engineering, operations management, civil engineering/transportation, logistics management, risk management, applied mathematics, economics, computer science, industrial management, and other related areas.

        Book Description

Keeping up in a highly competitive and fast-changing world is tough. Managers have to keep business practices current with evolving trends and customer expectations. This requires organizational change, and people often respond to change with stress, fear and even hostility. This human resistance to change is the biggest reason why organizational change efforts often fail to live up to their potential. Projects fail not so much from technical inadequacy as from failure to gain acceptance among the people they will affect. The price of a failed change can be steep, in loss of competitive position, loss of credibility and lowered internal morale.

Making Change Work: Practical Tools for Overcoming Human Resistance to Change was written to help organizations prepare for and successfully implement change. Making Change Work will first provide tools to measure your organization's readiness to change, helping make sure that the efforts will not be doomed to fail from the beginning. The book then provides many practical tools to apply sequentially and logically in order to gain acceptance of the change throughout the organization. In helping your organization make change successfully, Making Change Work addresses buy-in, acceptance, motivation, anticipation, fear, uncertainty, and all the other messy human considerations that cause change to fail in the real world. It will particularly benefit technical managers dealing with the reality of human responses to change and uncertainty.

I have been reading a bit slowly to make it last longer. Darwin was unique and his writing is personal in this journal. Highly recommended for anyone who likes biology, nature and thinking about them.

                  Book Description

Are they needed? To be sure. The Darwinian industry, industrious though it is, has failed to provide texts of more than a handful of Darwin's books. If you want to know what Darwin said about barnacles (still an essential reference to cirripedists, apart from any historical importance) you are forced to search shelves, or wait while someone does it for you; some have been in print for a century; various reprints have appeared and since vanished."
                  —Eric Korn,Times Literary Supplement

Charles Robert Darwin (1880-1882) has been widely recognized since his own time as one of the most influential writers in the history of Western thought. His books were widely read by specialists and the general public, and his influence had been extended by almost continuous public debate over the last 130 years. New York University Press' edition makes it possible for the first time to review Darwin's public literary output as a whole, plus his scientific journal articles, his private notebooks, and his correspondence.

This is the first complete edition containing all of Darwin's published books, featuring definitive texts recording original paginations with Darwin's indexes retained. All illustrations and plates are presented, inclucing 82 color plates of birds and mammals and several folding maps and plates. The set also features a general introduction and index, and textural introductions in each volume.

In Legacies Of The Turf: A Century Of Great Thoroughbred Breeders (Vol. 1), racing historian and expert Edward L. Bown presents the stories of some of the greatest Thoroughbred race horses in history and the often charismatic, powerful, or quirky individuals who supported them. Capitalists, philanthropists, and women working with the bloodlines of champion steeds soon learned that the stellar a few sires and dams dominated racing circuit, and true rivalries between both humans and horses, on and off the race field permeate this fascinating, nicely illustrated, and highly recommended horse racing chronicle.

5 out of 5 stars Traces both equine and human family lines.......2005-02-03

Award-winning author Edward L. Bown continues his chronicle of the most skilled, wise, and successful racehorse breeders in Legacies of the Turf: A Century of Great Thoroughbred Breeders, volume 2. Picking up where volume 1 left off, Legacies of the Turf covers the last fifty years and traces both equine and human family lines with exacting precision. Black-and-white photographs illustrate the meticulous narration; all equine geneaology material is heavily researched and condenced in tree form at the close of the book. A "must-have" for horse enthusiasts avidly interested in following and learning from generations of human and animal legends.

The information contained in the text is an outstanding overview of principles that are used in not only Jujitsu, but all martial arts. A must for the true martial artist.

5 out of 5 stars What Traditional Jujutsu is SUPPOSED to Look Like.......2006-08-16

I saw one of the reviews on this page that gave the book one star because he said it looked more like karate than jujutsu...which tells me right there that this person (the reviewer) has no clue what real jujutsu is all about. Because of Brazilian JJ and mixed-martial arts too maybe folks today think Jujutsu is all about rolling around on the floor; but a study of the traditional ryu shows that atemi-waza (striking) and keri-waza (kicking) were ALWAYS significant parts of the art. How much of an idiot would a samurai (the originators of the art) have been if they did matwork on the battlefield? For them it was all hit, move, hit, kill, move.

Shihan Maberry's fine book, ULTIMATE JUJUTSU, captures this very well, and perhaps for the first time in a book not written by a Japanese. Also, it includes some of the techniques I had to be be in jujutsu for 20 years to learn.

Overall: five golden stars from this jujutsuka. Osu!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on JUJITSU.......2006-06-15

I don't know what some of those other guys were talking about, this is by no means a karate book. It tells the history if Jujitsu, how the basic principles work, and shows a lot of the basic and advanced techniques. It's not a strict how-to book (you need a class for that), but it's great as a how-to-understand how-to book, if you get what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Smart Book for Jujutsu People.......2006-05-23

This is a different kind of martial arts book. It goes for the brain rather than the fist. Instead of a how-to book, it's a book on how the art itself works, from the core. Very nice.

                          1 out of 5 stars Bad form.......2006-05-19

I didn't see much traditional jujitsu, mostly karate stuff with a little judo tossed in.

From the Alpha Teach Yourself series comes this self-paced, step-by-step approach to learning ASL. It teaches readers the unique syntax and grammar, the signs themselves, and the just-as-important subtle facial expressions and body movements.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent, comprehensive intro marred by lousy pictures.......2006-05-30

I'm so sorry to give this book only 3 stars, since it gives such a good introduction to ASL.

Given that few people buy only ONE book on a subject, I will say Alpha Teach Yourself ASL is definitely worth buying for its background information and discussion of deaf history and culture.

However, there is no way you can "teach yourself" signing using this book, as the photos are about tiny black and white thumbnails (about 2" x 1") that, if not outright blurry, are rendered indistinct by the printing process. It is SO hard to distinguish one minute hand gesture from another in this book!

Since the "teach yourself" aspect is the book's stated purpose, I do feel I have to give only 3 stars. There are better guides to teaching yourself actual signs, but few that are quite as comprehensive for guiding you through the world of sign.

a few words to share about this book

                          a) i picked it up because it was one of the few books that didn't have idiot, dummy, moron or retard in it's title

                          b) it was an excellent book in regards of summarizing deaf culture, history, and edict when meeting people that are deaf

                          c) it was poor in regards of helping to learn sign language because the pictures were dark and hard to follow

                          d) I was confused because when i looked at other ASL books i noticed that some of the same words were translated much differently. There was no explanation why these words would have different signs.

i would't recommend this book to anyone who really wants to lean how to sign... i think taking a program or submerging yourself with people that are deaf is the only way that will be helpful to learn the language

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book on Deaf culture and ASL.......2005-03-12

While I agree with another reviewer that the signs in this book are not represented as well as I have seen in other books (many of which I own), I did buy a copy of this one and recommend it.

The book is broken into chapters, the author calls them "hours" to follow the Teach-yourself-in-24-hours theme. Each "hour" is followed by a short quiz, answers in the back, that reinforce the material covered. I like this.

Chapter One -- oops, Hour One -- is a short history of American Sign Language. The next hour discusses Deaf culture, and the one after starts to present some signs and discusses the language itself. One thing it deals with is accents, I had not ever considered the fact that people in distant parts of the country might sign the same concept differently, that is, using a different accent. But this makes a great deal of sense. It's also interesting to note that some signs might be presented differently by a man and a woman.

Then on to conversational basics. How to get attention. How do you handle situations when two people are signing and you have no choice but to walk between them? Or suppose you're signing with a deaf person and a hearing person comes over to talk to you, what should you do? Then on to letters, numbers, and grammar. Look for the section on name signs.

The book has a lot more to cover, but you should get the idea by now. This book is not just a book teaching American Sign Language signs, it is a snapshot into the world of the Deaf.

                          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!.......2004-02-03

What makes this book stand out from other ASL books? Many excellent qualities come to mind. The book opens with the history of ASL and a look into Deaf culture. The author is Deaf, born to Deaf parents, so this is home turf for her, and the window into the world is fascinating to me. The explanations of the history of Deaf people and Deaf culture are very interesting and provides a solid basis for the lessons that follow. I enjoyed the writing style, many of the facts were new to me, and the book was easy for me to follow. This book is an excellent tool to help learn ASL.

Each chapter has a lesson plan with clear goals that are achieved in the chapter. I enjoy the photographs, because this is what real ASL looks like. All of the individuals are Deaf native signers, which gives this book a level of authenticity I've not seen elsewhere. Other books I've read use drawings of the hands, but this book allows me to see the placement and movement of the hands, the body language and the facial expressions. To a person learning ASL, this is a huge gift. If a sign involves motion, multiple photographs are used, and the movement of hands is obvious from following the photographs.

The author covers a very wide range of topics and signs, from moving around the house, to numbers, to telling time, to sports, to the role of Deaf people in September 11th, and many more areas. Anyone who learns a basic command of these signs and grammar as shown in the book will be able to communicate in many different topics in ASL.

Not to be missed is the emphasis that is placed on practice, and getting to know Deaf people. ASL is the third most popular language in the United States, and the benefits to learning ASL are very rich indeed. This book, combined with practice, a good teacher (nothing beats having a Deaf teacher who is fluent in ASL!) and socializing in the real world with Deaf people will provide the maximum benefits for the student of ASL. This combination will give a person the skills they need to enter into the the community of the Deaf, enter their culture, and communicate in their beautiful language, thus opening up a whole new world of friends and opportunities.

3 out of 5 stars pictures are difficult to understand.......2004-01-28

Many of the pictures are dark and difficult to see. In may of the photos the hands are too small to see exactly what the fingers are doing.

They are also not explained well. There are no arrows where there is movement, and poor written explanations of the movement. I misunderstood quite a few before checking them with video.

Good explanations of the rules of the language and culture. This would be a good book if you already know the words.

This is a wonderful and fun activity for someone who may be interested in trying to draw buildings and bridges. It was purchased as a gift.

My son took to this book right away. It gives good drawing directions, but what I like about it most is that it familiarizes him with some classic architecture and styles.

5 out of 5 stars That was Fun!.......2007-01-10

I bought this for my son who is still learning to draw and write. When it arrived, I grabbed our big Magnadoodle and started drawing these myself to see how they looked. It was great! I could easily draw these in just a couple of minutes.

If you have a budding artist who likes architecture, this is a good tool to getting started. Once the structure is drawn then they can embellish it with their own imagination!

Bought this book for my nephew who has always had an interest in building. At the age of three he was able to put any toy, plane or castle together without someone reading the instructions to him. I bought the book to see if he an interest in understanding the basics of constructing a building. He opened the book and within 60 minutes had drawn a bridge, a skyscraper and a castle. He has completed the entire book and his older sister is also using the book. I highly recommend this book to any adult interested in expanding a child's mind. He may never become an architect but he has developed areas of his brain that might help him solve a problem in other disciplines whether science, math, or art. Good book. I would like to use it also.

I'm a landscape and still life artist who needed to create an SF or Fantasy style building or city. I didn't want to take the time to learn drafting. This book is for the beginner or advanced artist who wants a step by step, how-to for drawing accurate structures easily in a few minutes.

No complicated perspective drawings. Quickly draw famous buildings from around the world.

This is a great book for children too. No complicted directions.

A simple guide for creating any type of building you desire. The author makes it simple in as little as 3 easy steps.
