This volume is a follow-up to the earlier
Urban Economics, Volume 2 of
Handbook of Regional and Urban Economics, edited by Edwin Mills. The earlier volume, published in 1987, focussed on urban economic theory. This new handbook, in contrast, focuses on applied urban research. The difference is of course in emphasis. The earlier volume was by no means entirely concerned with theoretical research and this one is by no means entirely concerned with applied research.
There have certainly been important theoretical developments during the last decade, and they are surveyed at appropriate places in this volume. However, there has been an outpouring of high quality applied research in urban economics, as in other specialties. The reasons for the rapid growth of applied research are not difficult to identify; improved theoretical frameworks within which to do applied research; improved econometric techniques and software; more and better data; and, probably most important, ever cheaper computing power, which is being ever more widely distributed within the research community, providing increasingly easy access to and analysis of, data.
Selection and classification of topics to include in this handbook has inevitably depended on the editors' perceptions of subjects on which important research has been undertaken. It has also depended on the availability of authors who were able and willing to write critical surveys of large amounts of international research. An attempt was made to include authors and have them survey research from a variety of countries. However, there is still a US bias in applied urban research, partly related to the availability of data and computers but also to the sheer size of the US research community.

Book Description
Hardbound. The Field of Public Economics has been changing rapidly in recent years, and the sixteen chapters contained in this Handbook survey many of the new developments. As a field, Public Economics is defined by its objectives rather than its techniques and much of what is new is the application of modern methods of economic theory and econometrics to problems that have been addressed by economists for over two hundred years. More generally, the discussion of public finance issues also involves elements of political science, finance and philosophy. These connections are evidence in several of the chapters that follow.
Public Economics is the positive and normative study of government's effect on the economy. We attempt to explain why government behaves as it does, how its behavior influences the behavior of private firms and households, and what the welfare effects of such changes in behavior are. Following Musgrave (1959) one may imagine thr

A reference book for anybody interested in Knowledge and Learning Mgmt!!!.......2006-04-03
I liked so much the Knowledge and Learning management holistic approach of the book. In other words i havent seen before any textbooks dealing in an integragted way with knowledge and learning management. Most of them discuss e-learning which in fact is a stupid term!!! What means e-learning? Learning Mgmt is very nice term.
Furthermore the Semantic web perspective helped me to see what is really happening. Many books on Semantic Web but most of them loose the real business value since they go to deep technical details that are out of my perception.
An emerging new era of applications and frameworks. I run a business and really liked the relation of the topics to my daily routine as well as to my strategic considerations for the exploitation of knowledge and learning.
Surprising VERY GOOD!!!.......2006-04-03
When I saw this title, I was triggered by the combination of many HOT keywords on title: Knowledge, Intelligent, Learning, Semantic Web.
I found it VERY GOOD. With many contributors, with a full research questions for the emerging domain, this book is for ALL.
I was surprised reading another review sayin it is only for academics!! From the first chapter i felt that editors developed a book with teaching and problem solving orientation. Its the first edited book that has so many interactions.
And I loved very much the KMR Group, http://kmr.nada.kth.se and Ambjorn Naeve's view on Knowledge Management. If you visit their site you will be surprise.
And the other coeditor, AIS SIGSEMIS leader, Miltiadis Lytras (http://www.sigsemis.org) seems to be strategist. Go to sigsemis portal and see what is happening on SW for free...
An excellent Book. I found many answers. I loved its editing strategy.......2006-04-03
I got the best value for my money in this title. Aiming to explore Knolwedge Management and E-learning through a semantic web perspective in business environments, i found the contents of this book to the point.
I loved the most the additional materials in each chapter e.g. Case Studies, Internet Sessions, Essays, further Readings, Useful URLS.
Its one of the few edited books that i valued as excellent. It seems that editors and contributors developed a reference book for knowledge and learning management.
I am looking forward for the forthcoming mentioned editions in the preface by the same authors.
I recommend this title!!!
Well done!!!
Disappointing.......2006-03-24
The content of the book matches the description above, and it does provide a reasonable overview of the field (from an academic perspective).
However the book had plenty of grammatical problems, and I just found the content itself to be rather mundane, average and disappointing.
Probably only useful to academics looking for frameworks and an introduction to the literature, but even then, as I said before, it really fell quite a bit short of my expectations. Nothing here that you wouldn't find by just looking at the proceedings of some average conference in knowledge management and semantic web.

Book Description
Published to coincide with the 30th anniversary of The Selfish Gene, this sparkling collection explores the impact of Richard Dawkins as scientist, rationalist, and one of the most important thinkers alive today. Specially commissioned pieces by leading figures in science, philosophy, literature, and the media, such as Daniel C. Dennett, Matt Ridley, Steven Pinker, Philip Pullman, and the Bishop of Oxford, highlight the breadth and range of Dawkins' influence on modern science and culture, from the gene's eye view of evolution to his energetic engagement in public debates on science, rationalism, and religion. This volume, which includes personal reminiscences and critical debate, as well as accessible discussions of science, is a stimulating tribute to a remarkable intellectual, written by some of the finest writers and scientists working today.

Writings about Dawkins while he is still alive.......2007-06-16
I picked this book out of curiosity. I have found the concept of the book, namely to invite people to write about an author who is still alive, quite strange.
The various contributions that address Dawkins's selfish gene proposal, its influence on the theory of evolution, biology, philosophy of biology, sociobiology, and other areas, will help the readers learn about some modern trends in the theory of evolution.
I liked very much the chapters by Michael Ruse, "Richard Dawkins and the Problem of Progress", and by Seth Bullock, "The Invention of an Algorithmic Biology". Both contributions have quite informative end notes. I was disappointed with the chapters by Daniel Dennett, "The Selfish Gene as a Philosophical Essay", and Steven Pinker, "Deep Commonalities between Life and Mind", perhaps because I had expected some grand, earth-shaking, new revelations. Some contributions could not hold my interest, probably reflecting my own biases and limitations.
Despite the enthusiasm of many contributors for the selfish gene concept, I am not convinced that this reductionist concept alone can account for the complex phenomena such as evolution and life.
Very disappointing, quite useless, ego driven.......2007-01-24
I can't help but feel that the reviews thus far for this book have only been favorable due to the contributions that Dawkins himself has made to the field of evolutionary biology.
What was most troubling about this book was the contradictions which the editors themselves (Grafen and Ridley) managed to incorporate. They say that Dawkins uses "impeccable logic" and yet they also claim that he's "often misunderstood". Grafen claims that The Selfish Gene caused an "immediate revolution in biology". Yet, Andrew Read, one of the contributors, said he didn't encounter the book until after he completed his four year zoology degree (and yes, it had been published before that time). One also gets to read about, from the accounts of several scientists, how The Selfish Gene "taught me to think" (from Read's essay, but this is only an example). Grafen then tells us that it is noteworthy that Dawkins was elected to the Royal Society for his "contributions to the public understanding of science, not for his contribution to science itself."
The Selfish Gene is a masterful book and it's certainly worthy of praise, but 283 pages of praise with intercalary superfluous biographic accounts by the authors makes this book one for the trash bin.
It is nothing but an academic circle jerk. Very disappointing.
Dawkins appreciation.......2006-11-10
If you have read Richard's books over the years, you will enjoy reading some other prominent peoples' opinions. I am now re-reading "The selfish gene"
Misplaced tributes.......2006-11-07
The subtitle, after the title naming the subject of the tributes, says: "HOW A SCIENTIST CHANGED THE WAY WE THINK". Who is "WE"? Certainly not anyone. Rather, it may apply to the contributors to the book, and more widely to Darwinians. My drift is that if that scientist, Richard Dawkins, indeed changed the way someone thinks, it concerns those who accept Darwinism as axiomatic, the change concerning how they think Darwinism can be detailed.
To me this is like thinking how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. Despite the authors' absolute certainty that Darwinism is true, it is, as I have tried to show elsewhere, not only a theory, but a false one. Its refutation is in fact quite simple, but it resides in what has been a blind spot on both sides of the dispute for or against the theory.
One of the authors in the book quotes Dawkins in matters that highlight the essence of the dispute (p.233): "Darwin made it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist." (As an aside: What about spiritually, emotionally, fulfilled?) And "The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but blind pitiless indifference."
Ironically, the just spoken "blind" indicates the blind spot mentioned above. The dire views expressed in the preceding quotations are belied by an overwhelming phenomenon completely overlooked. It is the activities characterizing every live organism. Their directions toward its preservation display the opposite of "blind pitiless indifference", of "no good", of "no purpose".
I shall not go further here into the questions of theism or atheism; it should, however, be clear from the aforesaid that the presence of directedness in nature, contrary to the claim of its absence, is, in the functionings of organisms, very much part of science, as exemplified by medicine.
It is instead Darwinian aimlessness which contradicts these observations. In this respect one may take a look at a prevalent theme in the reviewed book, regarding what "changed the way we think". Dawkins proposed (p.55) that the gene, "defined as any portion of chromosomal material that potentially lasts for enough generations to serve as a unit of natural selection", must be recognized as "the fundamental unit of natural selection, and therefore the fundamental unit of self-interest."
This has to do with the microscopic unit transmitting hereditary characters and which Dawkins for the preceding reason called "the selfish gene". Of interest now is of course that the gene or anything else in organisms is called without hesitation a unit of, aimless, "natural selection". As seen above, organismic parts do act with aims and are correspondingly replicated through generations with aims.
Dawkins called the gene "the fundamental unit of self-interest" because it is so replicated, and as known, "natural selection" is to favor that which survives, and the gene appears to survive longer than other units of organisms. But in the organism's activities aimed at its survival the genes are merely instruments by which organisms propagate for that survival. In other words, genes do not act in self-interest but in the interest of organisms.
More importantly, as here again called attention to, the living do not adapt as a result of undirected effects of natural selection, but as a result of their directed activities toward self-preservation.
Scientists give Dawkins a rave notice.......2006-11-03
Richard Dawkins is brilliant. Because he writes so clearly, his colleagues and students learn from him with ease; because he writes so entertainingly, they thoroughly enjoy the learning process. In Grafen and Ridley's compendium, other scientists who have benefited from Dawkins' brilliance build on his work, and provide important commentary and instruction on how to think and reason.

Book Description
A combination illustrated field guide, fact book, and folklore collection, "Beavers" is a unique and practical guide to these amazing creatures, one of the most prolific natural builders in the animal kingdom. Beavers are one of the great wildlife success stories of the twentieth century. Hunted to near extinction in most of their traditional range in North America, populations of these mammals are now thriving in many areas.
This concise handbook provides an accurate, informative portrait of beavers and their natural surroundings, making it a practical resource both for armchair naturalists and observers in the field. Included in this title are detailed guides to the behavior, biology, and ecological impact of this species. An important focus is placed on the reality of what beavers actually do compared to the myths that have been propagated for hundreds of years.
Topics covered include beavers' historic and contemporary range, their anatomy, fossil history, specialized body parts, reproduction, feeding habits, swimming skills, engineering skills, preferred habitats, food sources, year-round activities, identifying signs, predators, diseases, and survival instincts. "Beavers" also includes a fascinating study of the interrelation between these animals and human cultures, including world myths and legends and their significance to North American Indian tribes. Of special interest is their traditional importance as a food and fur source in the New World, one of the pivotal catalysts in the exploration of North America.

Deciding to enter your first triathlon is a heady moment--you're ready for the challenge of a swim-bike-run race and pumped to get your body training. Chances are, though, that you're experienced in only one, maybe two of the sports. How do you incorporate the others? What kind of equipment do you need? How often should you be practicing each sport? And what if you're a complete novice, a wanna-be athlete who has not done any of the sports, and you want to enter a triathlon to motivate yourself to get into shape and improve your outlook? Steven Jones, M.D., a professor of preventive medicine and a successful triathlete, has all the answers and reassurances you'll need in his down-to-earth book, updated in 1999, Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals.
As he says in his preface, his book is for the person "who wants to engage in a new and different athletic experience without turning the rest of his or her life upside down in the process and wants to have fun doing so." Focusing on the "marathon-equivalent" triathlon, which is a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike, and a 10-kilometer run (although he does have a brief chapter called "Doing the Duathlon and Going Long"), Jonas helps you decide if a triathlon is right for you, gives his own personal history of how he went from a nonathlete to a racer, and advises on how to pick your first race.
From there, he discusses techniques, the basic principles of training, and how to establish your "aerobic base," the basic level of fitness (especially important for nonexercisers) you need before approaching his "Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals Training Program," a five-hour-a-week, 13-week program to train you for your race. Also covered in the manual is equipment and nutrition. Jonas's style of writing is accessible to the layperson--he doesn't burden you with technical terms or complicated zones or training levels. He even goes through an entire race with you, from the night before to putting air in your bike tires through the actual events right up to the aftermath of the race. The terrific appendix includes diagrams of stretches. While this isn't the book for a seasoned runner looking to improve his overall time, this is the ideal book to provide guidance and encouragement for newbies to the sport. Reading just a few chapters will have you itching to start racing. --Jenny Brown
Book Description
A regimen for training that can be followed by anyone, anywhere, any time of year, and that makes triathloning a pleasure rather than an ordeal. The explosion of interest in physical fitness that has sent Americans running, bicycling, and swimming by the tens of thousands now extends to the fitness competition that combines all three --triathloning. Steven Jonas, a former nonathlete who began endurance sports in middle age, offers an accessible program for anyone from beginner to experienced jogger. Dr. Jonas's own experiences are the basis of this user-friendly book, directed to the person who wants to do more than just run. He sets forth basic recommendations on equipment necessary for triathloning and outlines a three-phased training program that will take the untrained beginner to a state of fitness where he or she can complete a triathlon of moderate distance. The book includes a chapter on nutrition and a stretching program. Dr. Jonas has revised and updated the work to include information on how to run longer races, how to train for the increasingly popular duathlon (run/bike/run), and new tips from his further fifteen years of experience. Techniques, fitness, training, equipment, nutrition, pre-race, the race itself --a readable introduction for the aspiring recreational triathloner. A new chapter on duathlons and how to run longer races, and updated appendixes on the latest magazines and books of interest to triathloners.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT book for first-time triathlete.......2007-08-18
This book takes a sane, low-key approach to triathloning. The author did his first one when he was about 45. Very well written, with detailed training plans and lots of interesting anecdotes. HIGHLY recommended
Programs for Beginners.......2007-04-10
If you've been wanting to get into triathlon, but you don't know where to start, this book is full of programs for you to get started on.
This book is GREAT for BEGINNERS.......2007-02-09
NOTE: This review applies to the FIRST EDITION. I just found out there is a Second Edition. I will oder and review it forthwith.
I rated this book 4 stars because it is an old 5 star book.
First, this book is for rank beginners. If you say, "Gee, I want to try this cross-training thing called a triathlon . . .um, where do I start?", then this is the book for you.
Second, the book IS DATED. It was originally written in 1984 and updated in 1996. A lot has happened since then; distances have been standardized, new equipment and techniqes have evolved, advances in nutrition and kinesiology.
Now, my reivew.
This is a marvelous book in a lot of ways. If you have no clue how to get started, this book will help you a lot. Unlike some of the reviewers here, and as stated by the author, this is TRIATHLONING FOR ORDINDARY MORTALS. Dr. Jonas lays out a program of exercise that rank amatuers can accomplish. He presents this information in a way that you can directly apply without a coach. The object of the book, as stated on page 23:
"This book is for you if you an average recreational endurance athlete of modest ability who would like to do a triathlon of modest proportions [Olympic]. It is also for you if you are not yet 'average recreational endurance athlete of modest ability' but would like to become one, with the goal in mind of doing a triathlon of modest proportions'" . . .This book is not for you if your ambition is to do an 'Ironman' triathlon."
Phase One is a three month prelude to developing an aerobic base, to get you used to exercising. Phase Two is a six month program to get you sufficiently fit to train for a triathlon. Phase Three is a three month program to COMPLETE a triathlon.
The nutrition and equipment discussion in the book are dated. However, the advice he offers, such as going to a specialty shoe store to get fitted, is not.
As to counting minutes vs miles, in one of the previous reviews, the BEST way for an amateur to build thier aerobic capacity is over time. Miles work best for people who are already there and have advanced beyond what this book may teach. You need to practice technique and intervals and that is beyond this book. I reccommend the 12 week walk/run program offered by the British Columbia sports medicene group a replacement for the run program.
I really enjoyed reading this book 5 years ago and again now. Science and technology have moved on, but sage advice is still golden.
Triathlon/Duathlon.......2006-08-03
I love this book because it gives you a normal everyday mojo's perspective on triathlons and duathlons. I recommend it to anyone who is a beginner.
Out of date!.......2005-06-11
I didn't realize how out of date this book was, or I would not have bought it. The book makes 80s-era references when it comes to diet, nutrition, and other books about fitness. He suggests that you'd better plan to spend a whole $45 dollars on a good pair of running shoes!
The author is readable, and his personal experiences are somewhat interesting. But although he is an M.D., there seems to be no scientific basis for his recommendations - it is all based on his personal experience.

Spanish Teacher of 25 Years Recommends This Dictionary.......2002-08-19
By far this is the best and easiest dictionary for high school students to use. A self-instructional section at the beginning shows students how to use a billingual dictionary and look for the exact meaning of the word they wish to find. With other dictionaries, students have come up with very bizarre translations, but this dictionary will help them to catch the nuances that go with a language. I have several copies myself and have recommended it to all my students.
Excellent BEGINNER'S dictionary.......2002-06-03
Harper Collins has a long history of providing students of world languages with dictionaries that, in addition to being reasonably comprehensive, have the cleanest, most transparent design on the market, and combine those features with affordable prices. The new (2001) Beginner's Harper Collins is no exception. Although it is a reference likely meant for first- and second-year students, and therefore is NOT as comprehensive as more advanced learner's dictionaries may be, it seems quite sufficient for that level.
The two-color design makes it easy to distinguish between keywords; each new meaning of the same word is underlined and begins on a new line. Explanations are clear, and provide not just basic meanings of words, but also usage patterns - a feature which is very helpful, and usually NOT found in similar, basic dictionaries. And so the English TO DEPEND is not only translated as Spanish DEPENDER, but also includes prepositional extention (DEPEND ON = DEPENDER DE), with an example (The price depends on the quality = El precio depende de la calidad); additional meanings and prepositional usage are explained through clear examples: You can depend on him = Puedes contar con él; DEPENDING ON in the sense of SEGÚN has not only an example (depending on the weather = según el tiempo que haga) but also a color-highlighted usage note (según has to be followed by a verb in the subjunctive).
The authors had enough common sense (unlike those of some competing dictionaries) to list only the most usual, frequent meanings, leaving out confusing details. And so, commendably, TO REALIZE is simply rendered as DARSE CUENTA, without listing the existing, but misleading verb REALIZAR (correct, although in the sense TO FULFILL and not TO BECOME AWARE OF); an appropriate usage structure is given as well: to realize that = darse quenta de que, plus there is a sentence: Nos dimos cuenta de que algo iba mal.
Usage notes scattered generously on the pages are a very helpful and unique feature; and so the entry for AN EAGLE not only gives ÁGUILA, but also highlights with a blue boxed background: "Although it's a feminine noun, remember that you use el and un with águila." Quite impressive in a BEGINNER'S dictionary!
There is a good and sufficient, although brief intro. on how to use a dictionary, followed by a few useful check exercises. The reference part includes irregular verb charts, as well as sections on telephone, e-mail, traditional correspondence, numbers, dates and telling time, and a list of common false cognates ("falsos amigos"). In the text of the dictionary all irregular verbs are clearly marked with an *, although finding the conjugation may have been made easier if they also had a pattern number listed in the entry, without requiring a second search in the the irregular verb section.
I can't resist mentioning the paper, although it may seem trivial to some readers: unlike so many pocket-size dictionaries, this one is printed on good, smooth, crisp white paper, NOT the yellowish and coarse newsprint which unfortunately is the common fare of most dictionaries in this price range .... Two-color print is another visual asset, although sadly it has not been used to its maximum advantage (e.g., irregular verb forms in the conjugation patterns could have been highlighted in color, increasing the visibility, without any additional printing cost).
Overall, for the first and second year students of Spanish (and equally for the Spanish-speaking students of English as a FL), this is the dictionary of choice, with little competition currently on the market among bilingual dictionaries (beginner's Spanish-only Diccionario Escolar VOX, ISBN 0844279803, ... would be a great companion to this title beginning at 2nd year level). One should note, however, that most serious students of language will outgrow the scope of this vocab by the end of their second year of (college) study.
modern format.......2001-11-03
The two-color (black and blue) print, high-quality paper, and the not-too-much-on-one-page format of this dictionary are what set it apart from the abundance of other Spanish-English dictionaries available. Because it is a beginner's dictionary, it is not exhaustive (for example, the word "mestizo" is not included as an entry). At the same time, the editors have made an effort to include very practical definitions. Therefore, under "pin" in the English section, you will also find PIN (número de identificación personal), and along with "making out" an address or "making out" a check, you can learn how to express "making out" with somebody.
The dictionary includes a special middle section with verb conjugations, false cognates, and fun word games (in both English and Spanish).
Though perhaps primarily intended as a resource for English speakers learning Spanish, my Mexican students of the English language have found this dicionary to be a helpful tool.

Good stuff, But . . ........2007-02-13
This is a good collection, I just wish the images came in vector format. They are all in photoshop Tiff format.
Check contents, not just title!.......2006-06-21
This is a terrific clip art book however, Dover has sold this exact same book under the title, "Printer's Ornaments and Dingbats." So if you already own that book, safe yourself the money and don't buy this duplicate under a different title. What a bummer!!!
An excellent design reference book.......2003-11-17
A wonderful and wide range of designs great for motifs and decorative design development. Don't miss it!
