Belabors the Obvious, Misses the Elephant in the Room!.......2006-07-23

Becker begins by telling us that auto manufacturing is in an overcapacity situation worldwide, creating pressure on suppliers, overhead costs, productivity, wages, and an incentive to build volume through filling niches. He then goes on to compare quality, productivity, and costs by major manufacturer. Guess what, Japanese firms (especially Toyota) come out best. Innovation is also important, and again, Japanese firms (especially Toyota) lead. (Becker fails to note that the three are closely related, per the innovations of the Toyota production system.)

The "really bad news" is that Becker gives almost no attention to Korea and China - the latter being the proverbial elephant in the room because of its much lower costs and ability to quickly learn and move up the technology chain.

Save your money and time - study the Toyota Production System instead.

For over the past hundred years there has been the debate over whether leadership is a competency that can be trained and fostered or whether it is an innate skill that individuals are born with. Dotlich and Noel add fuel to that fire as they assert that there is a mechanism called Action Learning that can create within organizations the necessary shifts in attitudes and behaviors at the leadership level for substantial organizational renewal. Action Learning, simply stated, is fostered experiential learning. In that there is nothing new here. What is new, however, is the way in which Dotlich and Noel have created a "whole body" syllabus for organizations that includes key learning activities that are tied to business objectives.

Where many leadership programs are deficient is in tying key attitudes, behaviors, and competencies into key business situations. Making the learning relevant and urgent is the key. The tie between learning and business application must be more than cognitive. It has to be an experience that includes intellect, emotion, risk, feedback, and reflection. "When we are fully engaged in a process, we are much more likely to be profoundly influenced by it." The way in which Action Learning creates this engagement is through tackling a significant business issue with people from cross-functions within an organization. The context of the book is the demonstration of the Action Learning principles as they were applied by Dotlich and Noel on several organizations going through major transformation. Some of the richest scenarios come from Citibank's challenge to become unified in how it approached business, General Electrics mandate to become global thinkers, and Johnson & Johnson's need to upgrade and develop executive talent here and abroad. Each of these industries utilized the Action Learning framework to tackle the necessary changes brought on by the complexity of today's business.

The term framework is intentionally as there is no template for this process. Action Learning is pliable, versatile, and malleable in order for it to flex to the urgent needs of the business. What makes up this framework is consistent. Action Learning is comprised of a process that selects key issues, creates cross-functional teams, designs presentations, and involves senior management. The time frame for this process can span nine weeks to nine months. In the process the individuals are given key assignments, attend specific seminars and learning events, and have a dedicated coach and sponsor. The sponsor is the key ingredient that ensures Action Learning success. The sponsor is the senior executive who endorses Action Learning and creates an atmosphere affirming the process and creates a top-down awareness of what's at stake for the business not address the key issues. In the midst of chaos-business today, there is often little time for individuals to reflect upon actions taken and impact of those actions. Through Action Learning, Dotlich and Noel claim that leaders in organizations can re-create that frames of reference in order to more effectively adjust to emerging business issues and are more effective leaders. They have identified ten contrasting mindsets that illustrate the gap between traditional leadership and re-created leadership. These include:

ü What might be versus what is.

ü Reflection versus doing.
ü Emotion versus intellect.

Re-created leadership that is realized through the Action Learning process enables leaders to be more agile and responsive to employees, customers, ideas, and opportunities. The authors have done well in this book. They show the importance of leader development, as well as how easy it is to get you and your organization pointed in the right direction. As a trainer, I know that the principles discussed are valid and implementable.

Also recommend a book we use in our leader development program that has scored high with our managers and well-received by our top execs: ""The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills.""

Dumbed down for the average reader.......1999-06-20

The book contains really basic information that is not a new revelation. For a better book on the subject read "Action Learning in Action: Transforming Problems and People for World-Class Organizational Learning"; Michael J. Marquardt. Marquardt's is slightly better and provides better real life examples.

Good content, but what's new?.......1999-03-09

This is a terrific book if you have no idea how best to train people in a corporate environment. But if you do, then this book is old news. The ideas and concepts are absolutely right, but unfortunately the authors try to imply they invented this method and no one else has ever done it. I currently work for a training company, and we have used all of these techniques for years. In fact, many of the authors' examples are over 10 years old. On the other hand, let me repeat that the authors' educational techniques are right. But they never went into enough detail to really tell a company how to do it themselves. I wonder why? They need to tone down the sales job. At the end of the book, I wanted to get an unlisted telephone number to keep them from calling to sell me Action Learning techniques.

This book presents the Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) paradigm for modelling agricultural decision-making in three parts. The first part, comprising two chapters, is philosophical in nature and deals with the concepts that define the underlying structure of the MCDM paradigm. The second part is the largest part consisting of five chapters, each of which presents the logic of a specific MCDM technique, and demonstrates how it can be used to model a particular decision problem. The book is great for genetics though I haven't read many other genetics books. The CD is a great addition, it gives real life scenario activities for what you are studying in each chapter, I wish they had it for organic. Description and pictures are great in coveying the general concepts of Genetics. Enjoy!

Pretty good, even if it is a bit wordy at times.......2004-06-03

I used this textbook when I took General Genetics this past semester. The book contains a wealth of information. In the course I took we focused on the basic principle of DNA and RNA, Mendelian principles, mono and dihybrid crosses, pedigrees and inheritance, multiple alleles located on different loci and multiple alleles located on the same loci, genetic mapping, damage and DNA repair mechanisms, prokaryotes gene regulation, and population genetics. This text did much to help my understanding of these topics and also contained other topics that we only touched upon in class or did not have time to cover, including the genetics of cancer, quantative genetics, and recombinate DNA technology.

At the end of each chapter in the text there are a number of conceptual questions and genetics "problems" that serve as a tool of teaching genetics by the problem based approach. These problems are helpful because my class focused on the problem based side of genetics, as most general genetics classes probably do. The book includes a CD-rom that includes the answers to ALL of the problems in the book for FREE! The CD-rom also contains movies that illustrate important mechanisms like transcribtion, translation, and DNA replication, as well as additional exercises. For me, I found it particulary helpful to be able to "see" genetic processes instead of just hearing about them in class.

Even though all of the anwsers to the book problems are included on the CD-rom, I would recommend picking on the Student Solution Guide as well because it is GREAT. It works out every single problem in the book. This is somewhat of a rarity for science books (especially biology ones). I can say that this solutions manuels is very helpful.

The only problem that I had with the textbook was that it was a bit wordy in some sections. While reading this book, I would recommend highlighting only those topics that your professor discusses in class and not getting hung up on terms that he or she has not talked about and sound like gobble-gook (Shrine-Delgado sequence, TATA box). Most likely, your class will focus on general concepts and you will not have the time to discuss the specifics in detail. I can't say that it is a bad thing that the book included detailed information from other areas of biology (biochemistry, cell biology), since these fields will be important if you are a biology major, but they probably do not need to be disscused in great detail in genetics if not prompted by the instructor.

Overall, I would say that this is a good genetics text. It contains usefull explanations and illustrations about topics that may not have been clearly explained in class, especially if your professor tends to mummble or doesn't have the best artistic style when it comes to drawing chromosomes.

I haven't been using this textbook very long, but there is one issue I think people might want to be aware of. If you buy this book used, you can't get access to the website. Mine didn't come with the CD-ROM either, but that's more to do with the person who sold it back than anything else (although if the CD-ROM were packaged so that you could just slip it into a pocket on the back cover more people might return the CD with the book). You can buy access to the website for $22/yr.

I haven't surveyed the entire landscape of genetics textbooks, but in general this one still left me lacking. My largest complaint: even though this is a first edition, the editing was atrocious.

Overall, the book was well-written. I really enjoyed the color photos and the review questions at the end of the chapters was pretty good.

Also included was a CD-rom with the answers to the problems, iActivities to help us digest the chapters we read, and chapter quizzes.

I really enjoyed the chapter quizzes because they helped me focus on areas I was fuzzy about. However, I did not like the quizzes very much either, because there were wrong answers. Most of the time, I figured the answer it said was "correct" was wrong and vice versa, so if the problems with the CD can be cleared, this can be a great book.

Conversations with horse is a great launching pad for a new exploration, not of what we have to teach horses but of what horses have to teach us. Those of us who try to really listen to our horses won't find a lot of new information, but will feel comforted and understood. Those of us who have been too scared to listen and let go of our weak methods of control like bits and stalls might get a gentle jostle to look closer. If you don't buy into animal communication, you probably will find this book to be paper thin. If you do accept animal communication this book with be as rich as a wedding cake. This book isn't about individual horse behavior or training, it is about connecting with the Great Mystery that is behind it all, where we and the horse can experience oneness.

While this is a small book, don't be fooled. It is not a quick read, neither is it trivial nor shallow. However, the average "horse person" will probably dismiss it as New Age airy-fairy baloney as it requires one to THINK. Remember: the number of years one associates with horses does not necessarily equate to knowledge or experience . . . there is a much bigger realm than the average mind recognizes. This book delves into the wider universe of co-existence as opposed to domination. It is not a how-to book about horses. It's a how-to book about life.

I was incredibly disappointed by this book. Of course, I have ridden, bred and trained horses since I was 10 years old. However, any fool who has every been around horses should have figured out everything Ms Solisti-Mattelon has to say in this book. That said, there are a lot o fools out there, so I'm sure there is a place for this book. Just don't expect great insight.

You thought you've read them all..........2003-08-06

Just when you thought you've read all the "horse whisperer" books out there. This one finds me. I thought this would be the same as all the others: herd behavior, flight instinct. etc. etc. Well it was, and it wasn't. There were insightful, reassuring methods and so many things that I have never thought about. This book is full of wit and humor and reading it seems to float on a cloud...that may not make sense, but it will once you read it. It's like the whole world is resting on that pretty white pony's back and he's just sleeping and you can hear him thinking. It's amazing. Kate is the greatest.

I had read so many recommendations on A.K's flies I decided to get the book, and it's been a great help. In particular I enjoy his tying method for bodies, eschewing dubbing in place of quill bodies for realistic segmentation. You need basic tying skills before using this book, it's not a book on how to tie flies, rather how to tie A.K.'s specific patterns. And, he also offers a few tips on finding materials that aren't in your local fly shop.

It's rare to have the privilege and opportunity to learn from one of the all-time grand masters of an art form and sport. A. K. Best is the Hemmingway, Van Gogh, and Michael Jordan of the art of fly tying and sport of fly fishing. In A. K. Best's Fly Box, I have been blessed with a detailed and well-written view and description from inside the specialist's fly box. Not only have I learned which flies are used by one of the true icons of the sport, but also how an expert has perfected the art form. I am tying better flies, and catching more fish as a result. I have greatly enjoyed and learned from this classic, and will continue referring to and re-reading it for years to come.

Great resource for EFL instructors, learners, and linguists.......2001-10-29

This is an amazingly thorough resource that explains different problems different learner groups have with English. The books is organized by language group (Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, etc.) so that you can easily look up your area of interest. Each chapter covers phonology, orthography, grammar, vocabulary, culture, writing/translation issues, and more. Each EFL teacher should have a copy of this book, to help him/her understand his/her students better, and it would be great for EFL students to have a copy too, so they can more readily see their pattern of errors.

The only thing missing is some kind of section on exercises to do to correct the errors. You'll have to go to another book for that.

The Viewpoints is a technique of improvisation that grew out of the postmodern dance world. It was first articulated by choreographer Mary Overlie, who broke down the two dominant issues performers deal with-space and time-into six categories. Since that time, directors Anne Bogart and Tina Landau have expanded her notions and adapted them for actors to function together spontaneously and intuitively and to generate bold, theatrical work.

The Viewpoints are a set of names given to certain principles of movement through time and space-they constitute a language for talking about what happens on stage. Coupling this with Composition, which is the practice of selecting and arranging the separate components of theatrical language into a cohesive work of art, provides theatre artists with an important new tool for creating and understanding their art form.

Primarily intended for the many theatre artists who, in the last several years, have become intrigued with Viewpoints yet have had no single source to refer to in their investigations. It can also be used by anyone with a general interest in collaboration and the creative process, whether in art, business or daily life.

Anne Bogart is Artistic Director of the SITI Company, which she founded with Japanese director Tadashi Suzuki in 1992. She is the recipient of two OBIE Awards and a Bessie Award, and is an associate professor at Columbia University. Her recent works include Alice's Adventures; Bobrauschenbergamerica; Small Lives, Big Dreams; Marathon Dancing; and The Baltimore Waltz.

Tina Landau, noted director and playwright, whose original work includes Space (Time magazine 10 Best), Dream True (with composer Ricky Ian Gordon) and Floyd Collins (with composer Adam Guettel), which received the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, an OBIE Award and seven Drama Desk nominations. I wanted a good, basic look at Viewpoints and this book has been exactly what I hoped it would be. It is to the point but still offers enough explanation to make sure the reader understands each viewpoint. If you want a good, basic background of the work this book does well.

This book was highly recommended to me by a dancer friend, and I've found it to be extremely useful for dance improvisation sessions I'm leading with a group of non-dancers. The authors offers numerous exercises that groups can build on, experiment with, and use to generate skill and teamwork. If you're looking for inspiration for your own performance project or creative ideas for group activities, you will find them here.

It took forever to finally arrive.. both in the sense that it kept getting delayed, but more importantly as a director who has trained with Viewpoints and wanted to impliment them into my work.

The book is very accessible to even those who have not taken any Viewpoints classes with a laid out ground plan for how to introduce each Viewpoint as well as how to use them in rehearsals and creating new pieces. The end of each section includes several options to eithe expand or replace, making the plan fit perfect for whatever you're doing. I read it cover to cover in a sitting and will be referencing it in the future as I direct those new to Viewpoints as well as those previously exposed.
