At a time when the gigantic transnationals have a huge impact on human health, the environment, working conditions and the economic prospects of nations, this book explores whether it is sufficient to continue to rely on industry self-regulation alone.
Before widening her focus to the general issues, the author examines the now famous case of the infant food industry. Almost two decades after the introduction of the WHO/Unicef Code seeking to regulate the marketing of formula milk substitutes, an estimated one and a half million babies die unnecessarily every year as a result of formula feeding. How effective, therefore, has the Code been in changing industry behaviour?
The author argues that a key question today is how to foster a political climate favourable to practical institutional arrangements for the better regulation of TNCs. Recognizing the tension between global governance on the one hand and the globalized free market on the other, she urges that close attention be given to corporate conduct and TNC compliance with what regulatory codes exist. A range of relevant questions is explored, including the roles of citizen action, national governments and international agencies.
A host of public concerns - for example, job losses when industries migrate or the introduction of GM crops without public consultation - point to corporate regulation as a looming political issue. This book contributes to the debate about how powerful corporations can pay regard not only to the bottom line, but also take more seriously their social responsibilities.

In contemporary knowledge work organizations, work is often accomplished through communication. Consequently, communication disruptions often translate into work disruptions. In this paper, we identify two types of communication disruptions with implications for the relative organization of work: delays and interruptions. Communication delays contribute to work disorganization when a worker is unable to move forward with a task due to insufficient information, while interruptions derail the flow of activities directed toward the accomplishment of a task. Communication technologies are often designed with the intention of improving work organization by reducing communication delays (first-order effect), but the use of these technologies may, in practice, inadvertently contribute to an increase in work interruptions (second-order effect). We illustrate these first and second-order impacts of communication media use in a descriptive model. Then, using this model as our point of departure, we draw on prior research on personal control, relationships, and organizational culture to offer testable propositions regarding likely worker responses (third-order effect) to either communication delays or interruptions with further implications for the organization of work. Our argument suggests that communication technology use may not result in either more or less organized work overall but, rather, may simply shift the locus of control over the flow of work.

The photographs are simply spectacular, from the sweeping herds of wildebeest(?) to the flamingoes... Art Wolfe's short, but descriptive commentaries about each photo are not only very informative, but quite interesting!
And notwithstanding the disclaimer about the (minor) digital manipulation for artistic effect, which the photographer very openly discusses in the book, these are some of the most incredible wildlife pictures you can see...

I bought this book for my son, who is aiming to be a Hokie in a few more years. The information is clear and precise, with great pictures and illustrations. My only disappointment is that the book does not have a hard cover as described; it has a soft cover which can easily be bent and torn with the use I expect it to get.

This book is the best training from the best coach in the world. Mike Gentry has recently won top national honors for his athletic conditioning program @ Virginia Tech and is a great person to model your program's training after. I don't care if you're not a football coach. You will not find a better book to learn from PERIOD!!!! Absolutley awesome. If you don't agree you're just ignorant or dumb.

I have bought several 'bodybuilding' books from Amazon over the past 6 months, expecting a full body transformation. What happened was that I ran into a lot of thoeries on working out which often contradicted one another (HIT vs. Periodization) and it occured to me that I hadn't found what I was looking for.
I then concentrated on athletic performance as my goal instead of just 'looks' that the sport of bodybuilding strives for. What sport out there is more demanding than football?? NONE! I play for a flag football team and I want to get bigger, faster, and stronger. Luckily, I found "A Chance to Win" with my favorite player on the cover, Mike Vick. The selling point for me was that the workouts on Gentry and Tony are PROVEN time and time again by the quality of football players at V.Tech. This book really covers EVERYTHING you need to know about training your body to become a true athlete like diet, supplements, drills for speed and quickness, and a year long training routine. Excellent book which I'll be using it for a long time.

In this case i knew the book.
I had bad experience buying books through other book Sellers and after had bought them i was informed that they were not available . I've got really disappointed.
When i buy a book i wanna make sure the book seller has it available.
Writing That Works - It Really Does Work.......2007-03-21
Writing that Works, by Kenneth Roman, is a great, great, book on how to improve your writing on the job. Even if the only writing on your job is to reply to an occasional e-mail, this book will improve your writing immensely. This is one of the top three writing for the job guides I've read (out of dozens), right up there with "Plain English at Work", and "The Elements of Style".

If you are looking for a concise and practical guide to business writing, then you've found the right book. It is organized well allowing you to zoom in on the specific advise you are looking for (e.g., memos, letters, emails, reports). The chapters are easy to scan so you can readily zoom into areas that you feel would be most useful to you. The book provides specific examples that well illustrate the principles touted in the book. This was one of the main books used in a Business Communication class at NYU's Stern School of Business. I also found the Guide to Managerial Communication (7th Edition) helpful.
Elements of Style for MBAs.......2002-12-30
This expanded version of an earlier edition of two seasoned advertising executive' original writing guide is something like Elements of Style, but aimed squarely at someone writing for business purposes (e.g., one of the ten chapters is "Asking for Money". There is a useful afterword describing a dozen more books to help you write better. Recommended as a good starting point for any business person wanting to write more effectively.

Okay, okay -- probably most of us don't live like Lilly. I don't have a house in Palm Beach or hundreds of close friends. But don't consider this book as "must-follow-instructions" manual. Instead, consider it worthwhile as a relaxing read and inspiration for occasions when you entertain a few friends or family. I like the photos and the arrangement of contents (collections of memories, recipes, and ideas for distinctly different entertaining occasions). I've made only a few of the recipes but they were successful and really good. I think the book is worth the price.

i read some contents of the books, and was really interested. It turns out to be nothing special, but the illustrations are adorable. Overall i was not too impressed. Lilly seems like a Martha Steward hippie version.
Light summery fun.......2005-07-21
Yes, Essentially Lilly is frothy, silly and mindless, but like a light angel food cake and berry dessert, that's what summer is about. If you like recipes and entertaining, this book is fun to flip through. One doesn't have to belong to the country club or routinely throw chic parties for a few dozen of her closest friends in order to aspire to such ideas. War and Peace it ain't, but who expected that from Lilly Pulitzer? (Maybe the last name threw some people off.) This is a pretty book with fun party and food ideas, which is sufficient entertainment for a lazy summer day either at the country club, or just dreaming about being part of that scene.

Even as a white woman I find this tough to stomach. If you see people of color in your life and like it that way, this Lily Pulitzer guide is a nightmare. Despite the title of the book, hers is a washed-out and scary vision. Only white people in photos and illustrations. Really really really white people. It's an Aryan Dream to be sure. Lily, come into 21st Century America! I'm returning my copy pronto.

I purchased this for my mother for Christmas, she loves Lilly Pulitzer and her clothing. The illustrations are great, lots of cute quotes and interesting recipes, too. I purchased the Entertaining version last year. I hope she will release a new theme every year.
