Book Description
Globalization reigns supreme as a description of recent economic transformationand it carries many meanings. In the policy realm, the orthodox terms of engagement have been enshrined in the "Washington consensus." But disappointing results in Latin America and transitional economiesplus the Asian financial crisishave shaken the faith in Washington and elsewhere. One response has been to hearken back to the more statist policies that the consensus marginalized. In this regard, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan are promoted as the poster nations that have derived great benefits from increasing integration with the international economy, without surrendering national autonomy in the economic or cultural spheres, effectively beating the West at its own game.
The fundamental questions addressed in this monograph are whether industrial policy was indeed a major source of growth in these three economies, and if so, can it be replicated under current institutional arrangements, and if so, is it worth replicating, or, would developing countries today be better off embracing the suitably refined orthodoxy?
Customer Reviews:
It¡¯s the politics, stupid.......2003-04-21
This booklet is intended not to be theoretical breakthrough or carving out amazing new facts, but to be a policy recommendation in the style of working papers from OECD or IMF which could be downloaded freely from their website.
East Asian developmental states of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, or their policy tool dubbed as industrial policy garnered enviable encomiums in the 1980s and the early 1990s. There were so many speculations on whether its industrial developmental experiences could be copied into the contexts of other developing countries. World Bank¡¯s ¡®The East Asian Miracle (1993)¡¯ was a good example of such trend. Even the stalwart of lasses-faire capitalism, the States, tinkered with the idea. Government-led establishing of SEMATECH was the instance. Now you can witness the stratospherical-scale experiment in China. But the more-than-a-decade-protracted stagnation in Japan, spectacular debacle of Asian financial crises seeded the suspicion about the model and it blossomed to the full-blown denial at the turn of the century. This monograph is another nail in the coffin.
The industrial policy is the policy set of promotion/protection. The state nurtured target industries which could be internationally competitive to step up the ladder of international comparative advantages. The targeted industry should be protected from the hostile environment up to being internationally competitive, and promoted with directing national resources to that industry. This, of course, bucked the basic premises of market economics with distorting the flow of resources. But authors are not concerned with principles, but whether this policy tool was effective at all. In a nutshell, they are skeptical. According to their econometric data, targeting served to shorten economic recovery, at best. It could be claimed that in the early stage of postwar recovery, the state intervention contributed to some degree. But it¡¯s dubious whether its efficacy could be extended after the initial takeoff stage, in Rostow¡¯s words. The industrial policy is more than economics but it¡¯s the issue of political economy, in other words it¡¯s prone to be captured by vested interests. It¡¯s the de facto consensus that since the 1970s, Japan could not be called as the developmental state: the political economy swayed to negative way to the efficiency of economy since then and it¡¯s the fundamental cause of Japan¡¯s stagnation. The point is summed up as ¡®Two Japans¡¯: the inefficient sectors are parasites on the efficient sectors like electronics, auto. This has dragged the overall efficiency of the economy down. Authors argue that the applicability of industrial policy i.e. promotion/protection is not hindered by WTO regime for there a lot of loopholes available under current rule books. The issue at hand is the efficacy and the political economy. The efficacy is questionable according to data. And it would be next to impossible to overcome the issue of political economy which could insulate the state from the vested interest.
The points this monograph poses are not that unknown. But the manner presenting in the form of literature is the problem of this book. Econometric data are interesting and inspiring. But they are employed to support points. I think they could have organized the points in more straightforward way. Points are scattered, not seamlessly sorted out.

Customer Reviews:
A book that shares life experience.......2007-07-13
The kind of book that shares life experience. I also work with turnarounds and it is interesting to find similar experiences occuring in different business environments. I am giving 4 stars, and not 5 stars, because I missed objective analysis methods. Anyone that want to work in a company turnaround should read this book.
A very good checklist for the restructuring professional.......2007-01-10
I am an insolvency practitioner and found the book easy to read and very instructive. It has been very useful to me as a "how to" handbook for addressing informal restructuring assignments.
Common Sense in Print.......2006-07-11
Most of the ideas in this book seem like common sense once you read them. The catch is that most people don't think this way until they read it. I found the book an enjoyable read and gave some clear step by step ways to improve a business that's in trouble. I would recommend it to any and all even those of us who are "Recovering MBA's" can be reminded of a thing or two.
Fascinating and Distinctive.......2006-01-15
This is a fascinating book and a distinctive one. To begin with, the author does not claim to have a magic formula for success and instead focuses on the many conceptually simple but difficult tasks required to make a success of a failing business. Some of the suggested strategies make me uncomfortable because of the implications for employees, but never do the strategies seem mean-spirited -- they just seem necessary.
The book was given to me as a gift, and after I started reading it, I couldn't stop. It ended up reading it in less than a full weekend, but parts of it have always stuck with me. I can't summarize it any better than the front flap: "Direct, funny, and brutally honest".
Lousiest book on turnarounds.......2005-01-17
Ive read a lot of business books but this one ranks at the bottom. It wasnt written: it was most probably taped during the authors spare time i.e. commuting in traffic, traveling etc. The book has advice like "attack drugs and alcohol at work...".
Some chapters, like the last, ramble on with no real objective. Ive never returned a book to Amazon but there always a first

Customer Reviews:
Cheaper than school bookstore.......2007-09-10
This is a required textbook for my intorductory biology class. Well laid out, easy to read. Tone is sometimes too conversational, I have to really pay attention to the facts. I saved nearly twenty dollars buying at amazon rather than at the school bookstore.
Confusing Text Book With Errors In Reference Section.......2005-12-13
There were many formatting errors in this book, such as the glossary columns being switched around-"G" doesn't belong in the middle of the "F" vocab. Some of the page #'s listed in the index were not correct. If you must use this book then you should know that the info can normally be found close to the page listed in the index. The figures/tables were very useful and restated the text in an organized manner, which helped the flow of the writing.
Biology -- A Guide to the Natural World.......2000-09-03
I found this book to much easier to read and understand from all the previous textbooks assigned to biology courses. The graphics and tables and examples are completely explained. The format asks questions and answers them in a simple, easily understandable text -- not like the mumbo jumbo that a person would have to read over and over to finally understand its meaning.

Wolf's Rain.......2005-06-18
I tell you now from the words of Red Moon, from the great spirit was born the wolf and man became his messenger, in other words the human race was created from wolves, or so says the author of the Book of The Moon.
Man is the real killer........2005-01-10
Brother Wolf: A Forgotten Promise starts off with an emotional "letter" from wolves to men, focusing on how humans and wolves used to live together in harmony, and how men are now killers, of wolves and other creatures. The letter ends with 'I do not think I know you anymore.' It is highly emotional, and nearly made me cry!
After that, the book switches to its true form...a book with captivating text and even better photos of wolves, taken ina areas where they are very elusive and have lots of foliage to be hidden among.
Jim Brandenburg, a very well-known wildlife photographer and the author of multiple wolf books, even goes far enough to explain his first encounter with wolves and how he felt at that time. The book is highly educational, but also very touching.
Overall, the book has great text with even greater photographs, and is definitely a good read. The high price, however, is quite a problem. But if you like wolves, and if you're willing to pay the price, definitely buy this book. It's excellent.
We are the Wolf!.......2002-12-21
Jim Brandenburg succinctly captures the essence of the wolf. The wolf has been so unfairly persecuted throughout our history; due on no small part to ranchers. Incredible photographs, this book will make you a wolf lover if you aren't already. Incredible text and photos!!!!
wonderful book for wolf lovers.......2001-06-23
This book had drown my attention at the very first sight, as I had been trying to find a good book with lots wolf photos for ages and fail at almost every bookshop I went to. The photos in the book are magnificent, also other then wolves, there are wonderful photos of landscape and other wildlife.
I'm really excited to read this book!.......2001-01-05
I know this isn't really a review, but I'm so excited to read/look at the pictures in this book (I just ordered it) I just had to say something. Wolves are my favorite animals and it always makes me a little angery when people talk about them as vicious man-eaters, because they're not. This book really looks like it sets the record strait. I'm really looking forward to reading this book!
Customer Reviews:
too basic, too dated.......2006-12-19
Let me begin with the positive: this book does contain very basic information on basic cyclocross skills, such as dismounting and bunny hopping. However, this information is contained in about ten pages of the book. The rest is pretty useless, including info on who won the World Cyclocross Championships in the early 90s and info on outdated equipment (Spinergy Wheels, for example). Since the book is so outdated, the section on equipment is pretty useless. Equipment has changed drastically since this book was published. I recommend that you save your money and simply do an internet search to find pages demonstrating basic 'cross skills.
Outdated, too general.......2006-07-28
Although revised into a second edition, the book is still very outdated. A lot of time is spent talking about equipment, which becomes outdated quickly, and you can tell the updates were edited in rather than rewriting the whole section. The space would be better spent talking about specifics of tactics and training. The pages devoted to embrocation really dates the book. Fortunately the section on training seem fairly current, given the recent advances in training science. Still, the updates put the book in the late 90s, so it's still a decade out of date. A good overview, but it leaves probably the biggest audience - road and mountain racers who've done a few 'cross races and become hooked - disappointed.
Third addition, smird addition.......2006-04-08
This is a good book on the ins and outs of cyclocross. If you really read the tips in this book, it will help a lot. But I found it's hard to just read a tip and realize when to use it in a race situation. Going back over the book, I see now things I read there, but didn't _learn_ until I'd been riding cross for a couple years.
And yes, the equipment section is horribly outdated now, but so what. Part of cyclocross is old school principles that will never change. You have to work your tail off, keep your forward momentum up, and choose lines such that you won't loose traction and crash. That will never change.
If you want a modern comprehensive equipment summary, buy Velonews in October. It's not realistic to keep this book up to date - it'd have to change every year.
Don't get carried away with the equipment. If you're reading this book, it's because you are new to cross, or just getting serious about it anyway. So focus on the core elements (mentioned above) and use this book in part as a guide.
Basic but informative.......2002-11-07
Yes it's outdated but it's possibly the only book on Cyclocross out there you can easily find. Definitely written for someone new to the sport. Very basic but still a good resource. The training and technique part of the book are pretty biased so don't use this a a bible for the sport. As a previous review stated it's really a primer.
beginners only.......2002-10-19
More of a primer for the sport. If you've been to a cyclocross event and paid only relative attention, you already know more than this book is offering. It's getting quite dated with technology, techniques and pictures from too long ago. Another edition is badly due.

On the other hand.........2007-05-17
I could not have been more disappointed with this book! The suggestions for quotes to use in toasts for various occasions were uninteresting and unoriginal. You could find many more memorable words and phrases to borrow in a host of other books. Do the authors really think that "may we be loved by those we love" would add wit or class to a toast at a family occasion? Pass this book by and find another to help you in expressing yourself glass in hand.
"A Heartfelt Toast For The Ones We Love".......2001-04-29
A truly remarkable book! Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. Original, creative, heartfelt and sincere toasts. "Crisp Toasts" is the answer for "those of us" who don't know exactly what to say and when to say it. It gives you direct guidance on helping you find the "perfect" toast for the "perfect" couple. Sincere and meaningful examples are given, some serious and others funny, and insight as to which one is appropriate depending on the situation. I have recommended it to many friends and relatives. What a wonderful reference book to keep throughout the years.
Product Description
Egypt's Coptic Church is one of the oldest in the world, with a cultural tradition dating back two millennia, during which time churches have been built and a variety of distinctive art forms have flourished. The world's largest and most exquisite collection of Coptic artifacts is now housed in the Coptic Museum, founded in Old Cairo in 1908. Here for the first time, in this lavishly illustrated book, more than one hundred of the greatest treasures of the Coptic Museum have been beautifully photographed to present an overview of this rich artistic heritage. Objects from churches and monasteries across Egypt include some of the finest examples of Coptic icons, stelae, sculptures, wall paintings, wooden altar screens, metal crosses, censers, liturgical implements and vestments, chandeliers, and bible caskets. Besides being objects of great craftsmanship and beauty, these artifacts, which range in date from the third to the nineteenth centuries, represent indispensable material for the study of the origins and development of Coptic art, as well as its relations with the ancient Egyptian, Byzantine, and Islamic traditions. Textiles, ceramics, terracotta, ivory and bone carvings, and documents (including the famous Nag Hammadi Gnostic library from the fourth century, one of the most valuable collections of papyri in the world) provide invaluable insights into the economic and social life of Egypt over the past two thousand years. In addition to objects from the Coptic Museum, this book also includes photographs of surrounding churches, some of Egypt's oldest, that illustrate the architectural legacy of the Copts. The accompanying text and captions provide a description of Coptic civilization in general and Coptic art in particular.

Book Description
This handsome portfolio contains ten fine art prints of David Roberts' superb lithographs of nineteenth-century Cairo, selected from Egypt: Yesterday and Today (AUC Press, 1996).
Between 1842 and 1849, on the basis of sketches made on the spot and aided by his excellent memory, Roberts produced the drawings that Louis Haghe turned into prints published by Graham Moon. These lithographs appeared in the original hand-painted deluxe edition.
Suitable for framing, they reproduce details of the monuments and streets of nineteenth-century Cairo with an accuracy that today would be called photographic. This high-quality collection of prints celebrates the epic grandeur and fine detail of Roberts' views, in a format that complements his extraordinary artistic achievements.
