      Book Description

Innovation is the key to gaining and maintaining a competitive advantage in the business world. Using multi-functional research from economics, organizational theory, general management and marketing, and strategy literature, Innovation Management, 2/e, provides a systematic approach to the strategies and processes that underlie the financial results of innovation. Designed to meet the increasing number of courses in innovation management, the text provides full coverage of this vitally important area of business. Drawing from his extensive professional and academic experience, Allan Afuah shows the relationship between innovation, a management function, and profitability, a financial function. He creates a framework that encompasses the basic questions of the "who, what, when, and where" of innovation, combining the latest theoretical discussion with abundant examples. In this second edition, Afuah explicitly incorporates coverage of the Internet as a technological change and offers an entirely new chapter, "Strategies for Sustaining Profits." The text takes a unique multi-functional approach that integrates the important contributions of economics, organizational theory, marketing, and finance to innovation management. This approach provides students with a full presentation of appropriate management theory and detailed coverage of practical concerns such as the role of government regulation, choosing a profit site, and the transfer of innovation. The impact of the public and international sectors is highlighted with chapters on globalization, innovation in emerging economies, and the role of government in promoting innovation. In addition to a strong analytical and theoretical foundation, the book offers many pedagogical examples. Most chapters conclude with short practice cases designed to supplement the numerous examples within each chapter. These cases are followed by a list of key terms and questions to stimulate discussion. Innovation Management, 2/e, is an ideal text for business school programs and also provides guidance for executives and managers seeking a better understanding of the value of innovation.

This book was recommended during my MBA at LUISS in Rome as the best possible reference for those who are interested in developing a thorough knowledge about Innovation and Corporate Strategy. It provides a complete overview on the subject, starting from which kind of company is more likely to innovate, how to overcome market uncertainties, what kind of human resources and network relationships you need to use, how to finance innovation and so on. The explanation is so fluid and the terminology so plain it could be easily read in a couple of days. Some useful case studies are also included. The only missing element is the strong emphasis on the IT sector. It would have been absolutely useful to include more cases on manifacturing and services companies. However, it should be considered one of the best available textbooks for Postgraduate students.

          Book Description

Since the third edition was published in 1992 there have been many more developments in the poultry industry, which have made a new edition necessary. These include new systems which are environmentally and welfare 'friendly'; much more emphasis on hygiene and vaccines in disease control and the role of molecular biology and cloning; further advances in management with special reference to feeding, drinking, lighting and egg collection; advances in genetics; developments in housing; nutritional advances; and increasingly restrictive legislation concerning the safety to the public of poultry products (particularly zoonotic diseases and drug residues) and welfare.

As a practicing Veterinary Surgeon I am often approached by clients about poultry diseases. Although I have a working knowledge of diagnosing and treating the diseases I felt that I had a lack of knowledge in how to manage poultry. After all, most poultry diseases are a physical manifestation of management mistakes. What stock densities are desirable? How far apart should the drinking points be? What mortality rate in broilers is considered average? How do you spot a poor ventilation system? Etc. Etc. This book has been an immense help in helping me understand the issues surrounding poultry management. It is easy and interesting to read and has been written in plain English without insulting the reader's intelligence. The section on diseases is concise and to the point since there are other books that deal with poultry diseases in more depth. At least now I can advise clients on how to avoid diseases or how to increase production by adjusting their management principles. A must read for student, vet and farmer.

            Book Description

This volume contains all that the beginning reader or student needs to soundly grasp the ideas and issues involved in the field. Building on the model used by Peter Singer in his highly successful Companion to Ethics, the Companion to Bioethics consists of 46 specially written essays designed to present the key issues and concepts in bioethics in an authoritative yet always readable, non-technical manner. An unusually comprehensive index allows the reader to find terms and topics not listed in the titles of the essays themselves.A Companion to Bioethics is an essential work of reference for doctors, nurses, lawyers, journalists, philosophers, moral theologians, sociologists and everyone interested in the ethical issues that are transforming our lives. It will be applicable both to everyday health care practice, and to the far-reaching issues arising from the revolution in the biological sciences as applied to human ethics.

As source material for the bioethics student, this anthology is a joy to read and refer back to. After a laconic introduction by Helga Kuhse, the book begins to situate bioethics as a discipline with articles contrasting it to law, ethics, and religion. The diverse approaches are next examined, each by an expert (Arras on the case approach, Childress on the prnciple approach, etc). Especially informative and provocative are the articles on personhood by Michael Tooley and brain death by Jeff McMahan. A sanity check is provided for bioethics teachers who wonder if they are approaching the discipline correctly in the critical review on how bioethics is taught by Catherine Myser. The book is a gold mine by experts who dispassionately present their topics cogently and clearly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compendium of bioethical issues.......2000-05-21

This anthology, like all other Blackwell philosophy anthologies, is a keeper. This text is comprehensive, and presents multiple viewpoints on each issue, unlike many texts, which present primarily one viewpoint.

Africa may not always have been in Jane Goodall's blood, but animals were there right from the start: the list of recipients in what one hopes is only the first volume of her letters includes Dido the dog and Pickles the cat. And this is no flight of editorial fantasy. Goodall always accorded these members of her "darlingest family" their proper place alongside such correspondents as her mother, her father, her best friend, and her mentor, Louis Leakey (a.k.a. FFF, Foster Fairy Father). Africa in My Blood opens with 7-year-old Valerie Jane's encounters with various canines (real and porcelain) as well as signs of incipient naturalism--she has found "a ded rook he died of cold" and is caretaking a "catepiler." In the same communiqué, she also notes that her toy chimp has a new dress. Goodall would later prefer her primates au naturel but would continue to balance her urge for living taxonomy with love and empathy.

Culled from more than 16,000 letters, this collection will inspire Goodall adepts and those coming upon her for the first time. Her "autobiography in letters" restores this icon to full, even frivolous, humanity. It also recalls a lost era of inspired amateurism. When she went off to Nairobi at 23 in the spring of 1957, Goodall had no formal scientific training. Yet within weeks she had met Leakey and was soon working with him, not to mention rebuffing his advances, though she assures her mother that "he's much too fond of me for any monkey business."

Meanwhile, they had already discussed monkey business of a higher sort. "There is the vaguest possible chance that little me," Goodall wrote, "may have the chance to go right out into the wilds of the Northern Frontier for two or 3 months to study a strange tribe of chimpanzees who may be a new species, or sub-species. That is too heavenly to even think about." By the summer of 1960, Goodall was installed at the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve (which she soon termed Chimpland). And over the next year, she made four key discoveries, if not more, and was proving herself the zoological equal of such masters as George Schaller, having documented her subjects eating meat as well as using tools with ease.

Africa in My Blood reminds us that Goodall was once a controversial rather than hallowed figure, her methodology viewed with suspicion and condescension. And as many of us happily vegetate in front of televised slices of animal life, her awareness of her privileged position puts things in perspective. In early 1961, Goodall recounts a complex ritual and then asks her family: "Can you begin to imagine how I felt? The only human ever to have witnessed such a display, in all its primitive, fantastic wonder?"

Because Goodall has written so elegantly and incisively on chimpanzee behavior in, for instance, In the Shadow of Man and Through a Window, some readers might initially be tempted to gloss over her descriptions of such animals as the venerable David Greybeard and expert towel thief William and concentrate on her own persona--teasing, hyper-enthusiastic, and absolutely determined. When her project is threatened in 1963, she implores FFF: "You would fall head over heels in love with all my darlings--never, never think that I will let anything happen to them through what I am doing. I KNOW it is right. I KNOW that I can work the Reserve the way it must. I KNOW that I shall come back here time and time again until the problems that remain are hardly worth mentioning." Africa in My Blood makes it clear that, as Jane Goodall has long stressed, human and ape cannot be separated. --Kerry Fried

              Book Description

AFRICA IN MY BLOOD is an extraordinary self-portrait, in letters and commentary, of Jane Goodall's early years, from childhood to the landmark publication of IN THE SHADOW OF MAN. It reveals this remarkable woman more vividly and clearly than anything that has been published before, by her or about her. We see Goodall grow from a schoolgirl into the promising young candidate whom the legendary Louis Leakey sent to a wildlife preserve on the shores of Lake Tanganyika to undertake a revolutionary study of chimpanzees. At Gombe we see her immerse herself in the lives of wild animals as no one had done before. AFRICA IN MY BLOOD is a dramatic, moving, funny, and important book that tells the story of how an English girl who loved animals became one of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century.

5 out of 5 stars Sit by the Firelight in Africa at Midnight with Jane Goodall.......2000-12-31

The letters in this collection date from Ms. Goodall's youth through 1966, when her stature as a scientist was well established based on her pioneering research in Africa.

Books of letters are normally associated with great female authors of novels, such as Virginia Woolf. In those wonderful volumes, beautiful style and playful use of words adds joy to one's appreciation of the literary works themselves.

So, I did not know what to expect from a book of Jane Goodall's letters. What I found was a most pleasant surprise. The letters provide a deep perspective into the personality of Ms. Goodall and how that contributed to the development of the research methods she used. I found the letters fascinating and very rewarding, despite the fact that they are the opposite of high literary style.

If you are like me, you may primarily know Jane Goodall from her National Geographic television specials. Those were very accessible and enjoyable. But I did not know the background concerning how her pioneering research with chimpanzees was initiated and developed. This book wonderfully filled in that background. Also, I did not know how an attractive young Englishwoman came to become a field scientist in Africa in the first place. Also, the shows made it all seem rather natural and easy.

First, you will come away impressed with what a devoted correspondent she was. Over 16,000 letters were found by the editor to draw from. Now, how many letters have you written in your life? Also, these are mostly long, newsy letters to family, friends, and professional colleagues. If she had been a book reviewer, no one would have believed her production. Remember that she had no computer to help her draft the letters. In fact, she had the balkiest manual typewriters imaginable.

What was even more remarkable to me was that so many of her early letters had been saved. How many letters have you saved from people under the age of 15? That these letters are available is quite a testimony to her relationships with these people, and the impact of her personality.

Then, I did not know that she was a secretarial school graduate when she went to Africa. A few jobs quickly convinced her that she was not cut out for indoor work. She was eventually accepted into a Ph.D. program without ever having attended college! In fact, she had done most of her breakthrough field work before her Ph.D. was even granted. So much for formal education as a way to create new scholarly methods.

Ms. Goodall has a wonderful love of humans and animals that makes no significant distinction between them. I was overwhelmed to read her descriptions of her pets and the chimpanzees and baboons she studied. It is remarkable to read page after page as she gossips with people about the animals by name in more detail and with more sympathy than in much of what she writes about people who were not close to her. This perspective is a fairly unique one, and led to her finding ways to relate to the animals throughout her early years.

There is great humor throughout the letters. Her many descriptions of men becoming interested in her and how she handled them are echoed in her descriptions of the female chimpanzees eluded the hovering males. Humor and laughter came easily to her. You will laugh too at the descriptions of the chimpanzees tickling each other.

You will come away with a great respect for what she accomplished. The difficulties she overcame were incredible, and the work that she put into her research is beyond imagining. She mostly wrote these letters around midnight, after working from 6:30 in the morning . . . often in the driving rain. This was a 7 day a week effort for her. Frustrations were everwhere. Great sequences would occur, but where no one could photograph them. Or the exposures were set wrong on the camera, and the whole roll of film produced nothing. And the camera problems were just the least of it . . . although they were the most maddening to Ms. Goodall. Malaria, shingles, and mysterious diseases affected her and the others she worked with. But her commitment remained strong.

Dale Peterson has done a fine job of selecting the letters and summarizing them at the beginning of each section. My only complaint about the editing was that more footnotes would have been helpful. I was regularly lost in trying to understand who some of the people were whom Ms. Goodall refers to.

I suggest that you give this book to a young person who loves animals. Perhaps something will "click" that will allow that person to see that she or he can live a life devoted to inquiry and closeness with animals.

              Follow your instincts!

              5 out of 5 stars A New Jane Goodall.......2000-04-18

For those of us who may think we know Jane Goodall as theheroine of National Geographic specials, the champion of primateintelligence and animal rights, one of the great scientists of thetwentieth century, Africa in My Blood comes as a revelation. Here is the young girl and woman discovering life for the first time, having a crush on the local curate, writing to her best friend Sally and her "Darling Family," traveling by slow boat to Africa, and then launching the career that we have never seen through such fresh eyes. Most astonishing of all, it turns out that Jane Goodall is a splendid writer of letters, which are full of comic anecdotes and finely-observed details, capturing in vivid prose the immediate events of her life and much wonderful material not included in her other books. Dale Peterson has done a superb job of editing, organizing, and introducing this monumental collection, showing Goodall as both private and professional woman, in both intimate portrait and dazzling display of her gifts as a writer. One can only hope that a second volume is on its way soon. END

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for squash players.......1998-08-26

I have recently become a squash player and picked Pippa Sales' book to help me. I couldn't have chosen a better one. Written in very clear language with excellent drill descriptions. The stretch exercises in the back of the book are wonderful, even for non-squash players. This book is well worth the alrleady bargain price. I highly recommend it.

"Improve Your Squash Game" is everything it promised to be and has helped me to improve some aspects of my game that I was not happy with. The chapter "14 Tips to improve your overall game" was absolutely well worth buying the book. The drills actually make me enjoy my drilling sessions and have improved my game markedly.

1 out of 5 stars Great concept, great title, poor execution........1997-01-31

Very disappointing. The drills simply incorporate a variety of different shots in different sequences. There is nothing particularly unique about them. Very few illustrations. $12.55 is a lot of money for 52 pages of very limited usefulness

3 out of 5 stars Were these pre-moderns really so dumb?.......2006-01-17

Giddens is a serious thinker, and his ideas are bold and provocative as one would expect from a theorist. What you will get from this book is a fairly comprehensive--albeit unreferenced (this is a collection of transcriptions of lectures delivered at Stanford University)--look at many key topics in the 'modernity' debate.

However, as one working mainly with "pre-modern" cultures I cannot help noticing that what social theorists' definitions of modernity too often amount to are despairingly infantile caricatures of the past, with no attempt made to document claims or to specify a historical context. Two examples from this book:

(1)"All pre-modern cultures possessed modes of the calculation of time. ,,,,,, But the time reckoning.....always linked time with place-and usually was imprecise and variable. No one could tell the time of day without reference to other socio-spatial markers...." (p. 17) ???Who-what-where-when is he talking about???

(2)"In pre-modern societies, space and place largely coincide, since the spatial dimensions of social life are, for most of the population, and in most respects, dominated by "presence"-by localised activities." (p. 18) What of the distant and/or imaginary places of religious and mythical discourse? What of early proto trans-national contacts? Are these 'spaces' not sufficiently modern to claim that there was 'de-localised social activity' in earlier cultures?
                Three stars.

5 out of 5 stars The persuasive micro-foundation of modernity.......2002-03-23

The persuasive framework to grasp modernity

This is the most popular title among Giddens¡¯s books. There are several reasons for the attractiveness.
                1. It was the lecture held in Stanford. So the writing style is easy enough to grip the whole line. It¡¯s hard to say his earlier theoretical books like ¡®Central Problems of Social Theory¡¯, ¡®The Constitution of Society¡¯ are easy to read through, though it¡¯s the nature of theoretical works of sociology, unfortunately.
                2. Timing: This book was published in 1990 when the chats of postmodernism or postmodernity waned for its unproductivity, while the discussion of globalization was about to wax. Giddens¡¯s countering of postmodernity and theoretical founding of globalization is so persuasive. The framing of modernity in terms of ¡®time-space distanciation which surfaced first in this book, still dominates the talk of globalization.
                3. He founded the seemingly macro-matter of globalization on the micro-level with the concept of trust. A set of ancillary concepts are accompanied to support this foundation like ontological security, risk, reflexivity, and abstract system. His linking between micro- and macro-level seems so convincing.
The overall outline of his framework in this book based on the concept of trust. Trust came from Erickson. So it has the psychological connotation. It¡¯s not hard to capture the gist. But I prefer more friendly version to social sciences. Let¡¯s consider it with the concept of ¡®expectation¡¯. We impose some expectation on every object we encounter; mother, friend, colleague, mug, pen, computer. We expect what my friend would talk or behave before his action or what this mug would like before buying it. What we expect for something is called the expectation. In other word, we assign the identity to those object. Object is everything we can allot name. My self-identity is no exception. Myself is also object which should have some expectation. Everything including myself on the time-space has identity. Trust is the name given to this process. Let¡¯s suppose the nature of time-space changed (time-space distanciation). Then our trust should change accordingly. This is the nub of Giddens¡¯s micro-foundation of modernity in this book.

4 out of 5 stars reflection from the Third World.......2000-10-24

In dealing the "consequences of modernity" (especially the sombre side, the dangers and risks), I am sure Giddens himself belongs to the "radical engagement" kind he describes. Not only trying to have some impact through his analysis of the situation to date, but practically participate in the "power arena" -as we know he is an important "mastermind" for the British ruling Labor Party. Thus his argument about getting into power to "make thing done" has its trail. And I can't agree more on this standpoint. However, I think he could have paid more attention to the uneven relationship between Western and Non-Western countries within modernity or globalization.

Modernity is a western project in terms of the ways of life fostered by the transformative agencies of nation-state and capitalism, according to Giddens. This is "because of the power they(the West) have generated"(p174). On the other hand, modernity is NOT particularly Western from the standpoint of its globalising tendencies because "there are no others"(p175). Hence, it seems clear that the Non-Western world can only "accept" what introduced to them by a "powerful brother". The helplessness is just identical to the situation of lay population facing the expert systems-but only the latter is detailed analyzed in this book.

Furthermore, I don't really understand why Giddens makes such an effort to discuss the unique of "trust" in modern era. I mean of course we have to "trust" the abstract systems. But it is the "abstract systems" not "trust" that results our difference from the pre-modern world. A per-modern person had to trust the rules of the society and something he didn't know as well (there were doctors and fortunetellers)!

4 out of 5 stars Consequensence of Modernity.......2000-05-13

The title itself sounds dangerous, however, the time I read this book makes me aware how far humanities came into destroying the human race. This is the reason why I advocate to all students and reader to fight back against globalization because this is part of what the book it says. The main core of the book or Anthony Giddens thought is that reflexivity of modernity is dangerous. Human are becoming distrusted, playing something that is move by self-centered interest. I know there are consequences of modernity, that is when we abuse our knowledge or intellect, when we are using this modern technology in destruction and in wrong way.

3 out of 5 stars consequences of modernity.......2000-04-28

this book discusses the dimensions and dynamism of modernity. modernity is multi dimensional at the institutional level. there are four basic institutional dimensions 1. capitalism -where is insulation of economic from political. 2. surveillance is fundamental to all types of organisation. 3. militaryb power - control of means of violence in the context of industrialisation of war. 4. industrialism modern industry with the alliance of science and technology transfers the world of nature and develop created environment. there are three sources of dynamism of modernity each connected with each other.1. separation of time and space .it provides means of precise temporal spacial zoning.2. development of disembedding mechanisms."liftout" social activity from localised context, reorganising social relations across large time space distances.3. reflexive appropriation of knowledge book also covers the topic of globalisation of modernity.it shows the difference in environment of trust and risk in premodern and moderrn culture.it concentrates on the themes of risk and danger in modern life and deskilling and reskilling in everyday life.

                  Book Description

Protecting Children in Time provides a highly original analysis of the origins and development of the taken-for-granted notion that it is possible through social intervention to protect children from avoidable harm and even death. By using case studies which span the past 120 years of "modern" practices and drawing on the work of leading social theorists of modernity and risk society it provides a new way of thinking about constructions of child abuse as a social problem and child protection as a late-modern expert system and experience. It proposes new ways of conceptualizing relationships between professionals, children at risk and families and deepens our understanding of what effective interventions have to involve.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I studied ballet for about twelve years when I was young and was asked to offer a ballet club in my school in the fall. This book lays out, class by class, how to train young dancers effectively. Included are photographs of correct positions and technique so even though my own is a little rusty I am able to show my students illustrations of what they will hope to achieve especially since my turn out has never been that great. I am happy to say that the class attracted boys as well as girls in my inner-city school and that a few of the children have convinced their parents to enroll them in a dance school due to their diligence and the interest they demonstrated in the ballet club.

This book is very good about giving ideas on what to teach from the beginning ballet technique up to advanced levels. From the ideas one can formulate a class and know that it follows a syllabus and will develop the student appropriately. It is a good book to use as a guide and I recommend it for that.
