    Book Description

Although modern location theory is now more than 90 years old, the focus of researchers in this area has been mainly problem oriented. However, a common theory, which keeps the essential characteristics of classical location models, is still missing.

This monograph addresses this issue. A flexible location problem called the Ordered Median Problem (OMP) is introduced. For all three main subareas of location theory (continuous, network and discrete location) structural properties of the OMP are presented and solution approaches provided. Numerous illustrations and examples help the reader to become familiar with this new location model.

By using OMP classical results of location theory can be reproved in a more general and sometimes even simpler way. Algorithms enable the reader to solve very flexible location models with a single implementation. In addition, the code of some algorithms is available for download.

            Book Description

Genetic diversity is one of the main resources sustaining human life. Food security largely depends on the availability and utilization of this diversity, which is of strategic importance for countries and companies. Conservation and utilization of biodiversity is thus currently an urgent area of global debate and concern.

Barley is a major crop in the world used for food, feed and malt, and with a wide religious and ethnic importance. The crop was domesticated in Neolithic time in SW Asia and spread rapidly under cultivation to new areas. Nowadays it is one of the most widespread and widely adapted crops grown under contrasting edaphic conditions. Adaptations to new environments, different agricultural practices and selection for different uses have further added to the complex diversity pattern.

Is it at all possible to give a complete picture of the diversity in a crop or wild species? Are we, by adding new technologies, only revealing parts of the diversity? Do different sets of data show similar or conflicting pictures of genetic diversity? Will the large genome size reduce the role of barley as a model organism in these current sequencing days? Or, are there still major reasons to continue to work with this beautiful crop?

The aim of this book is to cover the complex issue of diversification in time and space in a single crop: barley. Leading scientists from various fields describe the entire variation pattern in different sets of characters and an attempt is made for a synthesis to a holistic picture. The book proposes ways to use the achievements of diversity studies in future research and breeding programmes.

              Description:
Weed growth suppression is an explanation of intercropping yield advantage, which can be applied to diminish herbicide use in agriculture. Intercrop effects on weed community structure, nonetheless, have been sparsely studied. The hypothesis that intercrops will produce greater changes in weed community structure than monocultures was therefore postulated. It was concurrently predicted that species diversity of the weed community will be lower in the intercropping than in the monocultures, and that winter- and spring-emerging species in intercrop will be relatively less and more abundant than in monocultures, respectively. Field experiments were carried out at Buenos Aries and Rojas (Argentina) involving monocultures, intercrops of barley and pea, and a control treatment where weeds grew without crops. Effects on weed communities were characterised in terms of growth, species diversity (richness and evenness), and floristic and functional composition. Nitrogen content of plant biomass and interception of solar radiation were also measured. The greater the crop biomass, the higher the weed suppression was. However, barley tended to greatly suppress the growth of weed and pea plants, which could be explained by the greater nitrogen accumulation in barley plants in monocultures and intercrops. Furthermore, there were apparent complementarity in nitrogen uptake between barley and pea when intercropped, since both crops use different sources of soil nitrogen. Intercrops and barley monocultures generally produced similar effects on the companion weed communities, whereas pea effects were less suppressive and more variable. However, intercrops effects appeared to be more stable across experiments. Spring-emerging species generally increased its relative importance in the intercrop weed communities; whereas winter-emerging species were usually less abundant in intercrops. Divergence in the abundance of winter and summer emerging weeds could be attributed to the different canopy dynamics of intercrop and monocultures. This work contributes to improve current understanding of how crop-weed communities are assembled and may help in developing weed management practices that are environmentally sound.

Product arrived as guaranteed, and the book delivered everything promised. Wish there were more color pictures of the actual plants; but overall, it's a GREAT field guide for someone just starting out in learning about what to avoid while hiking, camping, or just walking through the woods.

4 out of 5 stars Don't harm snake on cover !!.......2007-05-16

My little brother just gave me this field guide. I was shocked to see a picture of a completely harmless Scarlet Kingsnake on the cover of a field guide to Venemous Animals.

I like the field guide, but please people, if you see the snake on the cover - understand it is a Kingsnake and completely harmless, not a Coral snake which is probably what they intended to have on the cover.

Coral snakes do not have red bands between two black bands, and the type of bands they have are quite different.

If you see a Coral snake, please don't kill it either - leave it alone, but especially do not kill a harmless Scarlet Kingsnake thinking it was a Coral snake. Hopefully the next edition will fix this embarrasing mistake.

5 out of 5 stars Essential to Everyone Outdoors.......2001-11-03

"Peterson's Field Guide to Venomous Animals and Poisonous Plants" is the first thing to be packed in one's backpack. It is essential to every hiker, camper, naturalist, hunter, bird watcher and nature lover. There are a hell of alot less hazards than benign plants and animals (although this varies somewhat according to region. The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US has it easy compared to the Southwest) and while most people could identify a few, it doesnt make sense not to learn the 2-3 dozen major ones to avoid.

The book is up to Peterson's usual high standards in a field guide. It covers mammals followed by poisonous plants, shrubs/trees, vines, ferns and fungi. There are color photographs but the black and white drawings are the way to go for IDing. Most people will not read the entire book unless they're a hardcore naturalist or really, really bored in front of a campfire. I recommend checking out the hazards in your partiualr area icluding AT LEAST the following: 1. All poisonous snakes and their look-a-likes 2. Black Widow and Brown Recluse spider 3. Tics and Scorpions 4. Bees, Wasps, Fire Ants 5. Poisonous Plants including the Big 3: Poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac 6. Poisonous Mushrooms (not so you can learn which you can eat, but to understand the severity of eating just one wrong one)

There's alot that won't apply to you(save those for a rainy day) and some hazards are less hazardous than others. For example, the short-tail shrew is listed, but most people need not live in fear of "killer shrews". But knowing that their bite has some bite to it, maybe you'll avoid juggling those cute furry creatures. Also, large mammals aren't included, though bears and mountain lions can seem pretty hazardous to me in some situations.I recommend supplementing your reading with "Bear Aware" by Bill Schneider and "Mountain Lion Alert" by Steven Torres. In addition, I wouldn't trust this book solely to gather a gourmet wild mushroom feast, either. I've seen some books topping 1,000 pages on edible shrooms and they still might not be complete. Its best to leave the shrooms alone!
Finally, there are a few diseases found outdoors worth researching: Giardia, hantavirus, rabies, and lyme disease among others.

Also recommended: "Peterson's Wild Edible Plants" and "Medicinal Plants".

5 out of 5 stars Before you know what's edible, know what'll kill you!.......2000-08-18

Before you dash out into the woods and pick some plants you think are edible, you might want to get this book and know definitely what will kill you, or really mess up your body. Excellent info, bright color pictures, and written for an easy understanding, this book should be in any nature enthusiast's library, right next to Newcomb's Wildflower Guide, possibly the best plant identification guide around.

                    Book Description

Internationally renowned nature photographer Art Wolfe has created a rare and moving portrait of Earth's vanishing primates. An incredible visual journey, Primates offers an exciting glimpse of gorillas, monkeys, apes, and other primates at home in the jungle. Wolfe traveled around the globe capturing as many species of primates on film as possible, journeying to the remote jungles of Central and South America, Uganda, and Rwanda, and to research centers and wildlife refuges worldwide. The resulting photographs celebrate the exotic beauty of these intelligent and, all too often, endangered species. From the playful antics of adolescents to the tender gestures between mother and child, Primates reveals an animal culture that has been, until now, almost completely inaccessible. Biologist Barbara Sleeper's accompanying text presents fascinating insights drawn from her many years spent observing primates. A marvelous blend of word and image, Primates offers a studied look at these remarkable creatures and their vanishing habitat.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous photos and good, solid info on primates.......2000-05-31

Primarily a photography book, PRIMATES offers an intimate and often humorous (but not condescendingly so) look into wild primate life. Even the brief text, by Barbara Sleeper, is first-rate, revealing details about each species not often encountered by lay people. This is not meant to be a comprehensive text, however, but a celebration of some of our closest relatives. The photography is at times stunning, capturing intelligence, emotion, innovation, and above all personality. If you love primates, or are even vaguely attracted to their study, this is a must-have book.

5 out of 5 stars This is by far the best primate book I have seen yet!.......1999-01-17

Filled with excellent photographs by Art Wolfe, this book shows more than 100 species of monkeys, apes, and lemurs. Seperated by geographical location and family, each specie represented has a short and comprehensible synopsis accompanying one or more beautiful photos. A great introductory book to the world of primates, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the field. Thomas R. Null, A Walk on the Wild Side: International Nature and Wildlife

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the wonderful world of primates!.......1998-01-16

This book is suitable for all ages. I just loved Art Wolfe's photographs. With so much emphasis on "trendy" primate species like gorillas and chimpanzees, this book introduces readers to the dozens of primate species of which you may never have heard. Like the gibbons, the lesser and often forgotten apes - whose domestic lives are lived by the standards humans so often fail to meet (sexual equality, no color bars, paternal role in infant rearing, monogamy)! Plus tiny marmosets you can old in the palm of your hand. All these animals are there. I loved this book. It is not a comprehensive guide or identification manual like Noel Rowe's book which I also like. It is a pleasant and readable book! There is no doubt about the fact that during the past decade, hypnotherapy has certainly gained momentum and acceptance and has earned its place in the health care of many people. Techniques are used in a wide variety of problems many of them emotional and medical, but not exclusively so. Hypnosis is a valuable tool that can be used quickly and effectively to create influencing strategies in the subconscious mind to create lasting change within the patient. This can be to reduce anxiety or fight phobias. More and more it is also found to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of sportsmen. It can promote lasting changes within the athlete.

This exciting book contains a wide range of interventions that can be used by the therapist with sportsmen as individuals or as teams to enhance performance, etc. It includes: a clear step-by-step guide for working with sportsmen; a guide to using hypnosis with groups and teams; transcripts of proven successful interventions; detailed case studies; and details on how to promote this side of your business. It is a book ideal for anyone who works with sportsmen and teams with professionally or as a hobby. It also is an excellent guide to anyone who is already in the business of hypnotherapy to expand business into what is more commonly called these days, sports psychology.

This book leaves no stones unturned, no questions unanswered. It has been carefully written by its co-authors and is an immensely readable piece of literature. So much sport, in fact so much of life, is almost entirely dependent upon the way that we think so this book is that guide we have been looking for to help people "win the mind game". The book is easy-to-use and comprehensive and gives excellent step-by-step guidance for its development. I can think of a few football and cricket teams which could do with help at the moment. How about your local ?? Well----it may be worth considering!! Highly recommended!! And I am only an armchair sportsman but I can see great potential for its use here.

This book is directed towards the ones that coach athletes with the aim to improve performance, and deals with how one in a systematic way can use hypnosis for this purpose. The authors claim that the method they describe can be very successful but that there is a multitude of other ways that works at least as good. This humble attitude is kept throughout the book and contributes to a very pleasant reading atmosphere. The reader gets many interesting perspectives on sport psychology and many case stories can provide a source of inspiration for the coach or psychologist. A strength and weakness with this book is that it is very clear and detailed, sometimes too clear and detailed and even extracted, which perhaps makes the book more suitable for beginners in sports psychology.

Mark: 4 (i.e. very much worth reading).

There is a growing level of interest amongst athletes in the use of Hypnosis for performance enhancement. Having a performance coach is now an everyday experience for tennis players, golfers and athletes. In a world where success and failure (and millions of pounds) can be measured in slivers of a second, or millimetres of accuracy, anything that can bring an edge - legally - is worth investigating.

This book delivers a step-by-step guide for those interested in working with sports people. Their approach is based on a four step model which allows those new to this field to be clear about what to achieve and how to achieve it. They support this framework with clear case studies, transcripts of particular interventions, and interesting anecdotes.

I found their in-depth exploration of the use of particular trance phenomena in focusing the client on positive outcomes to be especially good. The authors are very much at the 'new hypnosis' end of the profession, not attributing the efficacy of a technique to the trance depth of the client, so the chapter on Alert Hypnosis explains the uses of, and how to achieve, an eyes-open trance state, as well as talking and walking while in hypnosis.

While the book is aimed at sports psychology it has relevance to any field where performance is an issue, and as such is a welcome addition to my bookshelf.

                    Book Description

Your dinner bill came to $78.35, plus tip, divided amongst you and two friends. So how did you end up paying $50? In life, there are plenty of instances where a quick calculation would come in handy. Contrary to popular belief, the ability to calculate a tip, eyeball square area, or convert kilometers to miles-without using your fingers or moving your lips-is not inborn. Everyday math skills can be painlessly learned and easily mastered, transforming you from a person who doesn't know the meaning of APR into someone who understands credit card rates and their long-term impact on your wallet. Broken into sections which review basic arithmetic from fractions to percents, provide situational problems from cooking to gambling, and demystify terms from statistics to relative magnitude to probability, this is the one guide that anyone who took "Math for English majors" can't live without.

5 out of 5 stars Rusty Math Book.......2004-05-11

Everyday Math for Everyday Life could serve as a perfect stand-in for a math tutor! Mark Ryan's mathematic expertise coupled with a desire to help others is evident as he offers refreshing instruction to those of us with rusty math skill. Subtle humor splashed the pages while I learned to tackle seemingly complex situations involving math in my daily life. Never again will I fear helping children with math homework, nor will I avoid conversations involving finance or insurance. I might have overlooked it had I not been led to it during a math course, and for that I'm grateful, because it will hold center stage in my library from now on and should be the math book of choice for any average person as an invaluable resource of basic formulas and fundamental math concepts. Compared to other math books I've look through, this one is the easiest to read and follow. My conclusion is that everyone should have had a math instructor like Mr. Ryan. Owning his book is the next best thing.

                    5 out of 5 stars Extremely worthwhile.......2003-01-22

As someone who did research, fact-checking, and preliminary runthoughs for Mark during the early stages of this book's making, I know firsthand how much work went into it. He went well out of his way to make this book simultaneously entertaining and enlightening. The book is obviously geared toward those who aren't math-oriented, but it would be a welcome addition to a math-lover's collection as well. Someone who has enjoyed John Allen Paulos's books "Immumeracy" and "A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper," would definately appreciate this too.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone whose math skills have begun to rust.......2002-12-14

This book is great. I was shopping around for a basic math book for my wife, who recently got a management position, and stumbled across Everyday Math for Everyday Life. Most of the other book choices were just pages and pages of numbers, but Mr. Ryan does a wonderful job of putting the numbers into readable and understandable words. It is also well organized and clearly indexed. Now, the book is not only on my wife's desk, but I bought another copy for our reference shelf at home. I found the practical examples and explanations so well put that I expect to use Everyday Math as a resource to help my two school age children with their homework.
