You Need this book.......2005-01-21
I wish I'd have had all the information in this book when I became a manager. I felt like I was thrown into the deep end with no guidance. This book covers it all in a practical way that's easy to follow. It gives specific answers to those tricky management questions in a step-by-step format. I especially liked the section on writing and conducting performance reviews - this is always delicate and Ms. Milkovich covered it very well. The book is a fast read and is interesting from cover to cover.
Book Description

Don't Waste Your Money.......2007-05-09
This "handbook" has 30 pages, half of which are nothing more than quotes and "call outs" in larger font that consume the entire page. A printing tactic to fatten the handbook up, I'm sure. The handbook has 15 pages of actual material. At that point, it's just a brochure for the author's consulting services. You're better off reading articles on the Internet. Even at 15 pages of material, I read it hopping for some pearl of wisdom, but alas, nothing. Save your lunch money for something else.

Book Description
Mathematics in Medicine and the Life Sciences grew from lectures given by the authors at New York University, the University of Utah, and Michigan State University. The material is written for students who have had but one term of calculus, but it contains material that can be used in modeling courses in applied mathematics at all levels through early graduate courses. Numerous exercises are given as well, and solutions to selected exercises are included. Numerous illustrations depict physiological processes, population biology phenomena, models of them, and the results of computer simulations. Mathematical models and methods are becoming increasingly important in medicine and the life sciences. This book provides an introduction to a wide diversity of problems ranging from population phenomena to demographics, genetics, epidemics and dispersal; in physiological processes, including the circulation, gas exchange in the lungs, control of cell volume, the renal counter-current multiplier mechanism, and muscle mechanics; to mechanisms of neural control. Each chapter is graded in difficulty, so a reading of the first parts of each provides an elementary introduction to the processes and their models. Materials that deal with the same topics but in greater depth are included later. Finally, exercises and some solutions are given to test the reader on important parts of the material in teh text, or to lead the reader to the discovery of interesting extensions of that material.

Book Description
Up to the last decade or so, most general modeling approaches to the study of molecular components of biological responses have required significant amount of computer time, expertise, and resources, as well as highly specialized and often custom-written programs. With Biomedical Applications of Computer Modeling you don't have to be a computer scientist to learn valuable modeling techniques. The book represents the first single-volume book that describes general approaches to computer modeling as they apply to the biomedical professions, particularly in the realms of pharmacology and biochemistry. Bringing together contributions from researchers with hands-on expertise, the book is loaded with examples, and it also encompasses different types of computer modeling approaches. In fact, the text supports each modeling approach with clinical examples. It thereby provides a convenient source of readily applicable modeling information. In addition, the book offers easy-to-follow information and presents it in a how-to manner that minimizes the use of mathematical jargon. Biomedical Applications of Computer Modeling includes chapters on equilibrium modeling, dynamic/kinetic modeling, and stochastic modeling, as well as overviews of the application of models to experimental data. With the ubiquitous presence of desktops and notebook computers in biomedical environments, Biomedical Applications of Computer Modeling provides you with an unprecedented means for readily addressing data analysis or computer modeling problems.

Great Book!.......2007-07-16
I almost didn't buy this book because I wasn't sure that tips on donkeys in an English countryside would apply to donkeys in our southwest desert climate, but this book is wonderful! I am enjoying reading it, it is written in such a nice style and has lots of helpful tips. It doesn't take for granted that you already have knowledge about other equines, so it's a wonderful book for a first-time equine owner.
Not helpful for real ranchers & US donkey owners.......2007-07-09
I read the reviews & thought this would be a great book, but I was mistaken. This UK author treats donkeys like French Poodles. We live on a ranch in Texas and our donkeys live on acreage along with goats and cattle. We don't import donkeys from Ireland, and we don't care about registered donkeys, and we don't show them. Many of the things discussed in this book are ridiculous for a farm animal. Here in Texas donkeys are a preferred guard animal for goats because of their intelligence, caring nature, and hatred for coyotes (they kick them in the head when the dog isn't looking). I will say that the author's assessment of donkey personalities is accurate and they are intelligent, charming, social animals. They do love human attention and to be groomed and given treats. But for actual care of donkeys, a book more like the way the Storey folks write their animal care books would be more useful.
A Wonderful Book.......2007-07-08
This is a clasic little book. Once you have read this book you will never underestimate the humble donkey again! They are the giant amongst Equines. A great book for adults and children alike.
Very helpful.......2007-06-12
Typical of my husband and me, we got the donkey first, then looked in to care of the animal. I found this resource very helpful, and one we will refer to often. I'm glad I purchased this book.

"Where there are ballparks," writes Tom Stanton in The Final Season, his wistful meditation on baseball and family, "there are memories ... I could never go to Tiger Stadium without feeling the ghosts of history about me...." In 1999, the season of that noble ballpark's last stand, Stanton set out to make peace with those ghosts by attending all 81 Tiger home games. He wasn't sure what he was looking for when he started, but what he finds in the end is much more personal than anything he sees between the foul lines.
Conceived as a game-by-game journal, The Final Season is filled with baseball. Stanton steps up with graceful musings on the game, the park, the Tigers and their history, and, most spiritedly, a pair of living legends--former right fielder Al Kaline and announcer Ernie Harwell. But it's Stanton's thoughts about family--his own family and how the game and the ballpark have connected generations--that truly resonate. In his prose, this lovely old rust bucket of a ballpark, this repository of so many memories, becomes metaphor.
Fittingly, Stanton takes his father to the final game. "I've noticed something today," he writes of the experience. "It's not the seventy- and eighty-year-old men who are wiping their eyes. It's the generation that came after them. And we're hurting not only for the loss of this beautiful place, but for the loss of our fathers and grandfathers--belatedly or prematurely. The closing of this park forces us to confront their mortality, and when we confront their mortality we must confront our own.... A little bit of us dies when something like this, something so tied to our lives, disappears." --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
Maybe your dad took you to ball games at Fenway, Wrigley, or Ebbets. Maybe the two of you watched broadcasts from Yankee Stadium or Candlestick Park, or listened as Red Barber or Vin Scully called the plays on radio. Or maybe he coached your team or just played catch with you in the yard.Chances are good that if you're a baseball fan, your dad had something to do with it--and your thoughts of the sport evoke thoughts of him.If so, you will treasure The Final Season, a poignant true story about baseball and heroes, family and forgiveness, doubts and dreams, and a place that brings them all together.Growing up in the 60s and 70s, Tom Stanton lived for his Detroit Tigers. When Tiger Stadium began its 88th and final season, he vowed to attend all 81 home games in order to explore his attachment to the place where four generations of his family have shared baseball.Join him as he encounters idols, conjures decades past, and discovers the mysteries of a park where Cobb and Ruth played. Come along and sit beside Al Kaline on the dugout bench, eat popcorn with Elmore Leonard, hear Alice Cooper's confessions, soak up the warmth of Ernie Harwell, see McGwire and Ripken up close, and meet Chicken Legs Rau, Bleacher Pete, Al the Usher, and a parade of fans who are anything but ordinary. By the autumn of his odyssey, Stanton comes to realize that his anguish isn't just about the loss of a beloved ballpark but about his dad's mortality, for at the heart of this story is the love between fathers and sons--a theme that resonates with baseball fans of all ages.AUTHORBIO: TOM STANTON has been a small-town journalist for two decades. A former professor at the University of Detroit Mercy, he was the recipient of a Michigan Journalism Fellowship. He lives in New Baltimore, Michigan, with his wife, Beth, and their three sons.

When Tiger Stadium began its 88th and final season, Tom Stanton vowed to attend all 81 home games in order to explore his attachment to the place where four generations of his family have shared baseball. Both rollicking and introspective, The Final Season recounts his adventure that ends with the realization that his anguish wasn't just about the loss of a beloved ballpark but also about his dad's mortality, for at the heart of this story is the love between fathers and sons--a theme that resonates with baseball fans of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Great book about holding onto a piece of baseball history.......2007-04-04
Tom Stanton decided to attend every home game of the Detroit Tigers in their final season at Detroit Stadium as we are the richer because of it. What follows is a fan's dedication to memories that came from a place that at season's end will be abandoned. Stanton holds firm to his promise, missing important family events and dedicating himself to his boyhood team. With the advent of new stadiums popping up all over the place, Stanton celebrates why Tiger Stadium doesn't really need replaced and how the clean, corporate stadiums wipe away the many years of history with it.
A Real Treat.......2006-08-03
Thanks Tom Stanton for this terrific book and sentimental journey. Having grown up on the same street that Mr. Stanton's family did in Detroit, this book really was a walk down memory lane. A terrific family story. Very well done.
For any "diehard" Tiger fan to read.......2006-04-28
White reading this book, it reminded me so much of growning up in Williamston, Michigan (just outside of Lansing) with my two brothers and all of our friends, we played baseball in our front yard for years, we watched the games together and even went to a couple now and then. This book brings back those memories and reminds me of how family always comes first.
Thanks for a good read!
The Final Season is a must read for any baseball fan.......2005-02-16
I purchased this book after meeting the author at Cooperstown. I have read this book 3 times and is one of the best baseball books I have ever read. Could not put it down. A true treasure.
If you buy one baseball book make it this one.
Tremendous, heartfelt book.......2004-08-31
Tom Stanton has a talent for combining great baseball tales with personal reflections. This book is an elegy for a great stadium, but also a journey with family. Unlike other sports books, the author himself and his family become an integral part of the story.
A great read.
Book Description
Kana de Manga, the latest entry in the popular Manga University lineup of books, uses original manga artwork to teach students how to read, write and pronounce the Japanese hiragana and katakana alphabets, also known as "kana." Author Glenn Kardy, editor of several of the English-language volumes in the world-renowned How to Draw Manga series, and artist Chihiro Hattori have teamed up to create this must-have book for manga enthusiasts who are interested in more than just pretty pictures. Includes a foreword by Dr. Ronald A. Morse, professor of Japan Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

A Fun Way to Learn the Hiragana/Katakana.......2006-09-17
Even people with an avid interest in the Japanese language and culture might turn away from the idea of learning the hiragana and katakana (collectively called kana). Both are syllabaries; sound-based scripts that Japanese children learn before 1st grade. Hiragana are used to write any native Japanese word (sakura, sushi, etc.) and katakana are used to write words that are "foreign" to the Japanese language (for example, America would be written with the katakana for "Amerika") as well as sound-effect words (like "para-para" for falling rain).
Manga fans, Japanese language-learners, as well as those with a passing interest in Japanese culture will find this book an entertaining and refreshing change from the tedious textbook-like approaches to the kana I've seen in the past. Each character is accompanied with a Japanese word containing it, an illustration, and a description with relavance to the word. One could easily learn the hiragana and katakana using this book, with practice and perhaps using on-line flash card tools. Pages for written practice are included in the back, as well as a handy green reference card showing all the hiragana and katakana.
Kana De Manga .......2006-02-23
Have you ever wanted or needed to learn Japanese? Kana De Manga, by Glenn Kardy, allows you to do just that. By helping you learn the ABC's of Japanese you can, after mastering it, learn to read and write to write other more complex characters. The book gives both the cursive and print versions of each character, and allows space to practice each of them. I would recommend Kana De Manga because it has enough information to spur someone's thirst to learn to read and write Japanese.
The content in this book is factual and consistent in a way to optimize the rate at which you learn the basic Japanese characters. For consistency, the cursive form of the word is always on the left side, while the printed version is on the right. When words are made up of two or more derivatives, the book tells the reader those words and what they mean. The quotes coincide with the pictures on that page such "the odds of being struck by lightning are 700,000 to 1" as a quote about lightning. There are also pictures associated with every word, sort of like apple for "A" in the English language. There are also easy to learn definitions so you can remember all 72 of the definitions in this book.
Instead of the paragraphs being unemotional and boring, the author adds small tidbits of humor. For instance, one of the characters was part of the word "crybaby" in Japanese so there was a picture of a crybaby on the page. The author stated that usually people think these kinds of characters are cute, but he thinks "they are pathetic." While the book is humorous, it keeps you informed. While you are laughing at some of the jokes, you are not as bored while reading. The pictures themselves are also hilarious, such as a boy trying to smash a suika, or watermelon or one where a boy is squeamish at his own chi, or blood.
The author tries to appeal to teenage readers who do not know Japanese in various ways. He uses somewhat complex vocabulary but nothing teenagers should not know by now. He gives encouragement such as "the odds of you memorizing all the Kana in this book are 3 to 1" or "you are halfway there!" This makes the reader feel like the author is actually a real person, not just some text on a page.
This intriguing book will enrapture even people who are only remotely interested in Japanese characters because it is not filled from top to bottom with words. The facts and organization come together to make a superb read. After reading this book, you can even go into advance characters such as Japanese kanji!
great tool, learned all the basic Hiragana and Katakana very quickly..........2005-08-23
I was looking around for a book that would teach me to read and write Katakana and Hiragana, and I stumpled across this book. Kana de manga really isn't lying when they say the little pictures in the book help you to learn. The overall layout of the book was great, and the practice section was really well done. If you need to learn katakana and hiragana, then this is the book for you.
I like it I like it!.......2005-07-20
I think the pictures portrayed are best, but its easy to understand , I recommend this book to anyone willing to learn.
Nihongo's ABCs.......2005-06-11
I purchased this book at the store upon seeing it online. I thought, "Wow! Japanese is sooo cool! I should get this!" so I did. Let me tell you, it was (and is!) great. Not only do you learn all the characters of the two alphabets, but you learn many words as well.
The character is used in a word, and the romanji and english translations are included. In the paragraph on each page, it usually names a few words as well. The paragraphs also include a bit of information about the actual country.
The illustrations are very cute, and relate to the words given. Though the accented characters are not introduced, it's not THAT hard to figure out. It just takes some of the previously learned characters, adds accents, and TADA! It becomes a new character.
I hope to someday become fluent in Japanese. I realize that I have learned a LOT from this book. If you, yes you, reading this message want to become fluent in Japanese for WHATEVER reason, buy this book. It is the first step on your way to bridge the gaps between language (or to just have some fun with a new hobby ^_~)
Book Description
Have you ever wondered what a cat's meow sounds like in Japanese? How about the grumble of an empty stomach, the wail of a police car's siren or the crash of an ocean wave? Japanese manga artists rely heavily upon onomatopoeia - sound-effect words - and this special entry in the best-selling Kana de Manga / Kanji de Manga language-learning series from Japanime is jam-packed with illustrated examples of those sounds (and more!) in action. Featuring more than 100 Japanese onomatopoeia and their English equivalents in categories such as "Humans," "Animals," "Machines" and "Nature." Japanese/English text.

basic theological discussion of pricing.......2007-10-11
This book is not nearly as helpful as I had hoped. If you want to read to entire book, you'll get an overview on basic ethical and pricing theories, but there is no pracitcal "this is what designers are charging now" basis, and it is less that fun to read. Skip it.
Not enough concrete information........2007-09-18
I have been operating a freelance graphic-design business on a casual basis for over 10 year and have just recently decided to take it to a more professional level. I purchased this book because I thought it would help me streamline my billing system and teach me something I didn't already know. Unfortunately, I found that this book was much more chatty than informative and that the information was a bit too vague. It would have also helped if the forms at the back of the book were more fully discussed in the book itself.
While I found it interesting and somewhat insightful to read about the author's opinions and experience (which is credible), I did not feel that I gained much new insight from the book. Another book that I found more pragmatic and useful was Cameron Foote's "The Business Side of Creativity". Even though that book covers all aspects of running a graphic design business, it also includes a section on billing with advice that is both practical and concrete (including how to deal with clients who are price-sensitive in an assertive manner). While this book may help someone who is completely new at billing clients for graphic-design services, I personally gained more from Foote's book than this one.
Freelancers, read this one!.......2007-08-02
Freelance Graphic Designers, or those considering it, get this one. It is excellent. I have read it 3 times and still learning from it. It is Good advice. She's a nice lady. I want to meet her. This helps you in negotiating and deciding on a price, and not letting the client take advantage of you, and invoicing.
The author is a woman, btw. I think it is cool that a woman can have such a hugely successful business.
Why didn't I read a book like this ten years ago?.......2007-05-24
In straight-forward, witty and very business-wise language, Theo Stephan Williams lays it all on the line for anyone in or thinking of getting in the design business. She explains exactly how to negotiate, what to say and how to actually make a profit. While all other books dance around the subject of money, she just lays it on the table, giving hourly rates and project break-downs and without having to feel bad justifying prices that will keep you in business, I finally realize that it is a right to make a profit out of what we do.
For ten years I've been operating exactly like the kinds of people Theo knows inside out - thinking that breaking even is good enough, afraid to raise prices for fear of losing work. All that gets, she explains, is a huge, unprofitable client base, all making demands and not paying a good price for the services they receive. Theo provides clear, logical, sensible and highly convincing arguments to turn your business around and make a real success of it, as she has done of hers.
Read it and join the ranks of enlightened designers and design firms who actually make great money out of doing great work.
Well-written and informative.......2006-12-13
Theo's writing style is lively and at times, entertaining. The multimedia section is starting to show its age, but this is still a very worthwhile read.
