Customer Reviews:
The book is pretty good........2003-07-22
What I am trying to say here is you sit down and read it with your head. I don't understand why it is hard to understand the stuff in this book. I skipped 95% of the lectures. I missed one major exam(not counted in the end). But the final carried too much weight and it was really tough. I read this book only and I got a B.
Buy the Mankiw if you can!.......2003-06-16
This book has been a struggle to understand since the beginning. The explainations and definitions are described as if the author doesn't want you to comprehend the full meaning of the concepts. The examples are also terrible, it's like he's not trying to help us. Compared to the N. Gregory Mankiw book, this textbook is a bore.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing! .......2007-02-20
I was not quite sure what I would get from this book, since Peter F. Drucker is quoted so much by other managers (and many who are bad :) This book covered a macro & micro economic managerial view. Mr. Drucker thoroughly covers the full trend from agriculture, industrial, blue collar/white collar, all the way to the current knowledge worker trend. He states the truth about outsourcing (which in my opinion has been twisted out of context to what Mr. Drucker proposed as the approach companies should take). This book also covers the neoclassic conservatism and the US approach with this for further backing of capitalism. I was surprised to read that Mr. Drucker disagreed with some of the overly conservative view. And I get from the interview that he does value family and the values around family. I sure wish corporations would take his advice on that, rather than pick and choose what they hope will get them their next bonuse off of overworked people! I thought this book was awesome!! This is a book to read for full managerial and corporate trends! Very good book! Before you read someone like the unethical Jack Welch, pick up Peter F. Drucker and absorb real advice!
Team leader.......2003-09-02
Outsourcing has less to do with economizing than with quality. Information is replacing authority. Most people still have the big company mentality buried in their assumptions.
A knowledge economy's greatest pitfall is becoming a mandarin meritocracy. The key to the productivity of knowledge workers is to make them concentrate on real assignments. One should be intolerant of intellectual arrogance. A balance needs to be worked out between specialization and exposure.
Every organization has a theory of business. Sometimes reality changes but the theory of business does not change with it. The assumption that the computer industry is hardware driven paralyzed IBM.
Assumptions about environment, mission, and core competencies must fit reality. Rapid growth is a sure sign there is a crisis in the business theory. Unexpected success and unexpected failure equally show an inadequate theory of business.
Mass retailers had based their strategy on market homogeneity. Whosoever exploits structural trends is almost certain to succeed. The worship of premium pricing always creates a market for the competition.
There is a trend toward alliances as a vehicle of business growth. The modern organization has social responsibility. An organization is effective only if it concentrates on one task. Knowledge workers cannot be supervised effectively.
In team building there are three kinds of teams. The first is the baseball team with fixed positions. The second is the football team where players play as a team at the behest of a coach. The third is the tennis doubles team where players have primary rather than fixed positions.
History books record the squalor of early industry. Nevertheless, the workers were better off working in the factories than they were on the farm or in domestic service. Blue collar workers were manual laborers.
The emerging society is one based on knowledge. The central workforce will consist of highly specialized people. The knowledge society is an employee society. The Japanese term for continuous improvement is kaizen. An old Bell Telephone invention is benchmarking. For the most part downsizing has not resulted in the hoped for improvements.
The book is a collection of essays and interviews. The middle sags but the material near the beginning and the end of the volume is first rate.
Great even if dated........2003-03-13
Even dated there is something to be learned from this book. Drucker is one of the few people who not only talks about the future of business but clarifies the present business climate. Even when he is wrong about what will happen, which he will be one of the first to say, he is smart enough to admit it and learn from it. Drucker gives solid practical advice and insight to all aspects of business. And more importantly what should be part of business. I give the book a B+ on the StuPage just because of it being dated.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2002-05-14
Peter Drucker's greatest hits. That's the easiest way to describe this book, which compiles essays written by the ultimate management guru from 1991 to 1994. All of theses essays are about change: changes in the economy, society, business and in organizations in general. Drucker's advice on how managers should adjust to these tectonic shifts centers around the rise of the now ubiquitous knowledge worker and the global economy. As always, Drucker's analysis is far enough ahead of the curve that his 90s-era observations and conclusions are still relevant in the 21st century. We from getAbstract recommend this seamlessly organized book as the perfect introduction to one of the most important management thinkers of his generation.
The best scientific book on managing.......1998-12-15
Peter F. Drucker 1995 book is the expected counter scientific answer for Managers in a Time of great change. To manage complexity properly in all fields we always have had the need of a good theory so that we can make not only predictions but also controling our changing environment. The Drucker`s theory of Business is based on a fundamental schema he also uses in the most original theory of society we have ever heard. Transcending the traditional dualistic paradigm of dividing society into two sectors, the Public sector or Goverment and the Private sector or Business, Drucker propose a threefold schema, which can be very useful among all in, in those countries in which "the social sector" is a political mean to maintain the control of people at any price. In this sense he is completely right when he says that there are not poor countries, but countries bad administrated. The most important thing with Drucker thought is that is consistent, precise and why not scientific. Today when change is a fashion word this book is a great aid for those leaders interested to take their organization into a new stage of mankind.

Book Description
As salmonids have been reared for more than a century in many countries, one might expect that principles are well established and provide a solid foundation for salmonid aquaculture. Indeed, some of the methods used today in salmonid rearing are nearly identical to those employed one hundred years ago. Areas of salmonid research today include nutrition, smolt and stress physiology, genetics and biotechnology.
The purpose of this book is to provide a useful synthesis of the biology and culture of salmonid fishes. The important practices in salmonid culture as well as the theory behind them is described. This volume will be of interest to students, researchers, fisheries biologists and managers as well as practising aquaculturists.
Book Description
In the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century, it was widely assumed that society ought to foster the breeding of those who possessed favorable traits and discourage the breeding of those who did not. Controlled human breeding, "eugenics" as it was labeled by Francis Galton, seemed only good common sense.
How did eugenics come to exert such powerful and broad appeal? What events shaped its direction? Whose interests did it finally serve? Why did it fall into disrepute? Has it survived in other guises? These are some of the questions that Diane Paul sets out to answer - questions that have acquired a new urgency in light of developments in genetic medicine.
The eugenics movement appeared to be dead - associated with race and class prejudice, in particular the crimes of the Third Reich - or was it just sleeping? Has eugenics returned in the guise of medical genetics?
In the last decade, historians have come to understand that support for eugenics was diverse and tenacious, with most geneticists remaining enthusiasts through at least the 1930s. This new historiography emphasizes eugenics' broad and persistent appeal and its close association with genetics.
In CONTROLLING HUMAN HEREDITY, Professor Paul aims to bridge the gap between expert and lay understandings of the history of eugenics and thereby enrich the debate on the perplexing contemporary choices in genetics medicine.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introductory Survey of the History of Eugenics.......1997-12-30
Diane Paul has produced a readable and brief introduction to the history of eugenic thought. After an excellent overview chapter, Paul proceeds chronologically from Francis Galton and social Darwinism through twentieth century campaigns for sterilization and immigration restriction in the name of eugenic reform. Paul convincingly argues that eugenics has been used by proponents of a variety of causes and political persuasions, left and right. With announcements every week of the discovery of the gene for some ailment, Paul's book is both timely and important. As the debates over cloning, genetic screening, or gene therapy continue, this book will provide a much needed historical context that can only help as we reflect on today's eugenics.
20 pages of information in a 120 page book........1997-07-24
It is interesting (strange actually) that theauthor chose to present an inherently historicaltopic in a non-chronological format. The book is instead organized as a series of (IMHO arbitrary) topics, and the subject is analyzed in turn from the perspective of each. In fact, there is a great deal of redundency from "topic" to "topic", so much so in fact that reading any 20 pages of the book are as good as reading the whole. Still, those 20 pages would constitute a good introduction to the subject.

Fair Journalism.......2005-02-07
Monkey Business blows Debra Blum's Monkey Wars out of the water. Where Blum tries to appear unbiased by giving equal space to activists and vivisectors, Guillermo demonstrates that NIH and its vivisectors are scum by recounting the details of their repeated lies to Congress and their sordid back-room plots to keep a few tortured monkeys from ever seeing the sky or smelling fresh air.
No one who reads her account can have any doubt that the NIH should be gutted and massively reformed, or sadly, that Congress is incapable of doing so.
If you want to hold on to some illusion that our government will ever act openly, with honesty, or cares one whit about curing human disease or the humane treatment of animals, don't read this book.
Thought Inspiring.......2002-11-21
I read this book while in juvenile detention waiting to be placed in a foster home. It was given to me by a vegan employee. I wasn't going anywhere so I though "why not?" I was vegetarian at the time (for health reasons only), but knew and cared nothing about animal rights. Reading this book compelled me to be otherwise. Additionally, for those of you who think that PETA is just a bunch of hippie wackos - read this. This book is also about the founding of PETA and you will soon find out they are nothing more than people who love animals.
A Must for All Animal Lovers.......1999-11-03
No matter where you stand on the issue of animal rights, this book will give you a better understanding of the animal rights movement, and the case which launched the founding of PETA. It is very well written, describing in great detail the story of the Silver Spring monkey abuse case, in which an NIH-funded researcher, Edward Taub, was convicted of animal abuse for neglecting and abusing his research subjects. It is essential reading for animal lovers and anyone who is interested in animal rights and/or animal welfare. I found it easy to read, educational, and yet, disturbing.

If you don't know how to read a chart, this book is for you. It has comprehensive information necessary to learn about coastal navigation. Not a good replacement for actually being on the water and seeing the things charts show but a good book for the basics.

Miniature Rider Waite Tarot Deck is the world's most popular tarot deck! This classic deck has long been a favorite of beginners as well as tarot enthusiasts.
Customer Reviews:
Love this little deck! Highly recommend!.......2007-07-02
I am just learning to use the Tarot, and here is one of the best tips given to me by a friend with many years of experience with the Tarot. She told me to buy a second deck, tape each card of the deck onto a separate piece of notebook paper, and keep them in a 3-ring binder. In this binder I keep notes of my impressions and what I am learning about each invidivual card while getting to know the cards names and meanings. I decided this miniture deck would be perfect to tape into my notebook/journal. This has been a priceless learning tool, because I can look back and read notes I made months ago, notes I would have otherwise forgotten.
I purchased another miniature deck because the size is so portable. Now I carry the cards with me everywhere, and when I have a few free moments I'll pull them out. The smaller cards are easier to work with, and this is the deck for you if descretion is important. The prints and coloring on both of my miniature decks are just as clear and vibrant as the larger deck--no distortions whatsoever.
big disappointment.......2006-10-07
I love most Rider Waite decks but this miniature deck turned out to be a big flop. The scanning job was done poorly and some of the figures look distorted. The standard miniture deck is a lot better. Also the coloring isn't sooo special for my personal taste. I still prefer the original version light colors to Albano's or even to the Universal version.
I recently found a Lo Scarabeo edition of the 1910 version and the colors are just perfect.
Good.......2005-10-29
I had wanted the Rider Waite tarot for years. I saw it at a local mall they had a bunch of them. But at $18 I thought it wasn't worth the price for a deck that I personally could've drawn myself. I don't know about thinking up the idea for the first modern tarot and thinking up the actual pictures of the deck, but the artwork was so mediocre and not life-like and unrealistic that I personally could've drawn and painted these. Don't believe me? I got a grade of A B- in college Art 101 in the division III local school and was Art 101- painting. I just didn't think a deck with such mediocre artwork would be the same price as the much better Aleister Crowley Thoth tarot. Then one day I was looking on the wensite for a local bookstore named after a famous person. I saw a bunch of different versions of the Rider Waite tarot. I was debating between the pocket and miniature. The pocket was cool it was about the size of the small version of the Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot. I also have the larger version of the same Crowley deck. With that large of a size for a deck of cards you need a dinner table or similar just to have room for most technical spreads. The smaller one you can do readings on a shelf the size of about a laptop computer. That was the size of any tarot deck I preferred- it was much for practical because it took up less space and could be easily carried in a bigger man's pocket. After I did some measuring and thinking I decided on the miniature. I was going to get the pocket but the miniature was only $12. That's a good deal for a deck of tarot cards. Most decks of any quality are usually like 20 bucks, so about half the price for a smaller version of the same deck. The good things about this deck are: Arthur Waite was a famous occultist, writer and Golden Dawn member, - this deck was the first modern deck and became the standard, - the price was about half that of most really good decks for a smaller version, - the smaller the deck is the more practical because you don't need a family sized dinner table or the living room floor to do readings. The bad was only I estimated the size of the cards 2 by 3 inches. It was smaller than the small Crowley tarot. When I got it, I was expected a little bigger but it fit in the palm of my mind. But it's not so small as to be flimsy. They should've made it 3 by 5 like the Thoth deck. And as I stated the artwork on the cards was so mediocre I could make a reprint version of this same deck at a little lower quality only because I wasn't its creator. The Rider Waite tarot in any version is one of the only decks I'd recommend because it was made by a famous occultist who knows what their talking about. I like this deck because it is good and portable.
Good Things Come in Small Packages.......2002-12-10
These are a great deck to carry in your purse or pocket for times you can practice reading your cards. A little bit smaller than an normal deck of cards these take up much less space than other decks. Rider Waite is of course, a great starter deck and is easy to use. Great addition to your tarot card collection
Great portability.......2002-11-21
This is one of my favorite Tarot decks because of its portability. It is the miniature version of the Waite deck, and it roughly fits in the palm of my hand, which makes it very easy to shuffle. However, I just want to share a few praises and pointers that I've run across while using these cards.
On the positive side, these cards are beautiful with hints of classical and medieval themes, which makes these cards feel nostalgic and unique. Another great aspect is that there are many "Learn How to..." tarot books on the market that use this deck in their lessons. An additional asset is this deck's portability. It's truly fantastic. This deck is great for travel and it's discrete. Let's face it, how many of us want to explain why we're toting tarot decks? Unfortunately, mysticism, esoterica and tarots are still frowned upon by many.
On the challenging side, I find the very Judeo Christian imagery limiting because it's so emphatically chivalric in tone, and few modern people achieve this state. Additionally, the suit of wands--which generally symbolizes elemental passion, the ego and desire--hardly conveyed anything I would associate with these themes. Also, the gender divide is a bit awkward. We have two male archetypes, which are the King and the Night. The female archetype is the queen. Last, we have an androgynous page, which can be male, female or epicene. What this gender arrangement translates to is an older gentleman (King), a young man (knight), androgynous individual (page), and a female (Queen). So where is the maiden? How is it that all women are lumped summed under a queen? Many readers use the pages to represent young women, but I find this troubling, since the page can be a young woman, an adolescent male or female, an epicene, a child etc, and when it shows up in the answer, who do we point to? I feel that this kind of gender schema leads to confusion and makes this deck a bit dated. My last concern is that the Rider Waite tends to veil the darker and more shadowy sides of human nature and our complexities, which makes readings a bit harder to interpret because results tends to be resoundingly "good and moral," or "bad and duplicitous," and few people are so extreme. Hence, a more realistic tone would be nice, but I realize that this kind of tone would directly conflict with its medieval and chivalric picture schema.
All in all, once you get used to the pictures and its antiquated themes, you'll find this deck enchanting because it's so lovely and convenient. Other decks are about that have more modern pictorial representations for the Major and Minor Arcana--which incorporates a broader religious spectrum, which is nice--but this is still the handiest deck to tote around, and you can do it discretely.

A history and a photographic showcase of Batik textile art .......2005-01-04
Batik: Design, Style & History is both a history and a photographic showcase of Batik textile art of Indonesia. Perhaps most often used in brilliant shawls for women's daily wear, batik has even had styles meant to be associated with the aristocracy and are worn to this day for ceremonial occasions. In addition to full-color images of batik fabric, Batik: Design, Style & History includes some vintage black-and-white photographs of batik being worn or even created. The text spares no effort in delving into the traditions and even legends behind this unique and wonderful blend of artistic expression and practical functionality.

Book Description
From about 1840 onwards, batiks found their way from what was called the Netherlands East Indies, then under Dutch colonial rule, to the Netherlands, where they were kept in private and public collections. Owing to Holland's great interest in Batik, Amsterdam's Tropenmuseum now owns a collection of over 3000 pieces. Many represent the major batik centres that emerged on Java, Madura and Sumatra.
Batiks tell the stories of their maker, their wearers and eventual collectors. By studying the history of individual pieces from their creation to their arrival in the Tropenmuseum, we can relate them to their shared history.
Batik became a product of intercultural contact in a society where different ethnic groups lived next to or with each other. This book focuses on this communication, on batiks as visual witnesses of cultural encounter within the East but also between the East and the West.
This book will appeal to anyone interested in Indonesian arts and textiles. It is a rich source of study for scholars interested in the art of batik and the society in which it developed to its high level of perfection.
