      Book Description

The Allocation of Limited Entrepreneurial Attention examines the implications of allocating limited entrepreneurial attention among activities or projects. This book maintains that attention is simultaneously limited in that a decision maker can pay attention to only one thing at a time, and entrepreneurial in that it may be allocated to evaluating a potential new project for possible adoption. However, since the outcome of the allocation of attention is not certain, the number of projects among which attention can be allocated is stochastic and the maximum number of projects is endogenously determined by the optimal allocation of limited entrepreneurial attention and describes the implications of this analysis for a number of economic problems.

        Book Description

This is the first book to assess the contribution of Southern agriculture to the Confederate war effort, to describe the damage that agriculture sustained during the war, to analyze the transition from slavery to free labor after the war, and to recount the slow and painful process of rebuilding Southern agriculture by 1880. Synthesizing primary and secondary historical sources, Southern Agriculture During the Civil War Era, 1860-1880 fills a crucial gap in our knowledge about the history of the Civil War and Reconstruction period.

            Book Description

The use of molecular markers has revolutionized ecological genetics in the last 20 years. The fundamental problem facing new researchers is which of the many markers should be used and how the resulting data should then be analyzed. Until now, these guidelines have been hidden away in specialist journals. Ecological Genetics addresses this fundamental problem in clear, accessible language, suitable for upper-level undergraduates through to research-level professionals. The major topics in Ecological Genetics are treated within separate chapters, including:genetic diversity of populations and speciesgene flowphylogeography, andspeciationWithin each chapter the potentially suitable molecular markers are described and the resulting data from each type of marker are discussed, including the underlying concepts of the various modes of analysis. These are illustrated with examples from both the plant and animal kingdoms.Researchers embarking on molecular approaches to ecological genetics (for instance, final-year undergraduates and new postgraduates) will find the book essential, and more experienced researchers will also find it of interest.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-03

This book has everything you would want to know about Oreamnos americanus including how many times goats chew their cud depending on age. We view mountain goats a lot here and this book will greatly help improve this experience. I thought this book was well written and mixed informational data and story telling very well to keep things from getting to dry.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2005-12-09

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Douglas Chadwick is a brillaint and sensitive observer of all natural things and has a keen insight into human nature as well. Nothing you can read will ever teach you as much about Mountain Goats as this wonderful book. I have hunted Moutain Goats and will continue to do so. Regardless of Chadwick's feelings about hunting, I admire him greatly and highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Authoritative Foundation for Mountain Goat Studies.......2005-09-19

Chadwick presents here the most thorough and enjoyable encyclopedia of everything Oreamanos Americanus (Mountain Goat). It takes me back to my own days roaming the high country of the Bob Marshall on long weekends, seeing early spring heards back of Gibson Reserviour playing and every munching on sedge in the snow.

A thoroughly enjoyable read for any high country affecianodo.

            3 out of 5 stars Informative, but.......2005-02-22

I found the book to be very informative about the ways that goats go about their daily lives and the hierarchied structure that prevails. The problem I have with this book is the author's admission that he is against the hunting of mountain goats. This is fine to have as an opinion, but when the author admits in writing that he has performed an illegal act, harrassing animals to prevent legal hunting as well as threatening to destroy a legal road to disallow legal vehicle access, my opinion of the book plummeted.
Also the data in the book was from the 1980's and there have been many studies done since then. More recent information would have been helpful.

            3 out of 5 stars A Dated Masterpiece.......2002-08-26

Chadwick's book is one of the best glimpses at the biology and life of a unique North American creature. It is well written and easily understood by anyone with an interest in mountain goats. The mountain goat has such a unique niche in any landscape and has a very interesting social structure, which Chadwick makes a compelling argument for all of these and so much more. However, the fatal flaw of this edition is its lack of updated material. So much more has been discovered about these creatures since his first edition in the early 1980s. Unfortunately, the situation of the goats has also become more precarious since that time as well. I had hoped that this new information could be found in this edition; however, it was not. I highly recommend this book as a great asset for a natural history library, but I would look elsewhere for more timely publications.

I think that this book covered a lot of the material needed for canoeing and is a good guide for teaching younger kids before going on a canoe trip. That is the reason that I looked at this book because I am an environmental educator and was planning a canoe trip. It is a good source.

                      Book Description

Steve Tolleson's approach to design might best be described as scientific: it involves relentless research in which every element of a project—down to its letterforms—is subject to rigorous study through almost imperceptible permutations. The end results of this process are designs that are meticulously executed, sometimes cerebral, but never without emotion and wit. ?
Soak Wash Rinse Spin investigates the cycles of the Tolleson Design creative process through a textual and graphic layering of information involving four phases: research (the intake of as much information as they can gather), collaboration (with the client and with the other members of the creative team), visual exploration (the workbook process, which includes refinements and the examination of multiple options), and environmental influences (consideration of the ultimate purpose of the solution).

This compilation of tolleson design work is just amazing. the book features a lot of their best works and is very inspirational. definately worth buying, and its expensive, in fact, its really affordable, making it even more worthwhile ;)

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of inspiring design.......2003-06-13

I was a bit concerned about buying this book after reading complaints about type size, but after some debating I decided to just buy this book and decide for myself... and I'm glad that I did. Sure the type is small and a bit hard to read. But there are only significant ammounts of type on the first twenty pages. The majority of the remaining 268 pages contain mostly images. Some pages contain no type at all, other than page numbers.

This one gets 5 well deserved stars. Forget the type complaints and pick up a copy of this valuable addition to any designer's book collection.

3 out of 5 stars Beauty in Imperfection.......2002-07-22

Soak Wash Rinse Spin's typesetting forces you to stop reading after too few pages. You really want to dig in but are quickly demoralized into putting it down.

Sagmeister's, "Made you look" was studied in wonder over a 10 hour session immediately after opening the package. I had never heard of him and i was quickly converted into a believer, all other scheduled items became secondary. Long lines of sans serif tiny type are the only thing that stopped this book from having an impact of similar strength.

An unrelated note, within one week, the binding cracked.

One research misjudgement on my part was to assume the book was published very recently and included their newest projects (see tolleson.com) It was published in 2000 of course, some projects have glimmers of past trends.

Nothing compares to the sheer visual firepower Tolleson blasts with both barrels. There is a beautiful logic flowing with every peice and you feel drawn into the scientific precision of the studio's creative process.

A printer's eye glass would be a fun attachment to assist in reading this book, which despite it's flaws is a proud part of my collection.

3 out of 5 stars What's the point of this size?.......2002-04-19

This is a portfolio of work that is always interesting and often beautiful. The approach is as stimulating as the work and, sadly, this is where the book is done a great disservice by the size of the type. It is simply too small to read comfortably and seems to invite its dismissal. Everything seems irrelevant- small type not intended to be read because it's not important. It's unnecessary and unforgivable- an elementary folly that made me question the whole book.

The key take-aways from Sandra's book are valuable for anybody in the Customer Relationship space - which, today, is coming to mean everybody!

Sandra's book would make you get out of your company, act and think like the customers who buy your products or service, and make you discover the "value gaps" in your offerings.

A great example her book left me with is the idea of "smart cars": European customers who are buying cars are buying short-haul mobility, and the car sellers are in that "activity space". So you got to think about financing, of insurance, of helping with the servicing.

If a firm fails to provide these product/service pieces surrounding the activity space, the customer will perceive that value gap, and beware if your competitor thought about that before you!

                      4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-04-16

The death of the New Economy has been greatly exaggerated. That's the message at the heart of Sandra Vandermerwe's new book. While the heady valuations of the late `90s are history, the fundamental changes that technology inspired during that time are here to stay. With that in mind, Vandermerwe presents analyses of tools that business leaders need to survive into the 21st century. The most insightful of these is a breakdown of customer feedback loops and how they can be harnessed to lock in business. The book can't avoid many of the shortcomings that pervade most New Economy literature, like the tendency to advise readers to remake their businesses in anticipation of future customer needs - without commenting on how exactly that can be achieved. Nevertheless, if you're a manager who suspects that the innovations of the last decade might still play a key role in the growth of business, we [...] recommend this book to you.

Earlier today I reviewed this book.

I am not sure whether I requested it, but I would prefer that my name and email address do not appear with my review of the book.

                        Book Description

After a decade of sub-par performance, the Japanese economy remains in the doldrums. Now, after a decade of extraordinarily strong performance, the United States economy is slowing. The ability of the world's two largest economies to reestablish strong growth is of critical importance to themselves and to the world as a whole. Trade frictions between the United States and Japan have remained muted in recent years but the deteriorating economic situation in the United States will lead to renewed attention to trade issues. Japan will feature prominently.

The bilateral trade agenda is increasingly moving beyond the traditional border impediment issues toward the more politically sensitive issues of internal regulation and deregulation. In the past, security concerns have mitigated trade tensions but the end of the Cold War has undercut a primary justification for the United States-Japan security alliance, in turn requiring a rebalancing of economic, diplomatic, and security priorities.

This volume analyzes the United States and Japanese economies; their trade and financial relationships; and their roles in the provision of international public goods such as development assistance, environmental protection, and international security. It argues that the United States ought to deemphasize its Japan-specific policies and its traditional focus on trade, and instead address its Japan-related concerns primarily through multilateral mechanisms with a focus on monetary and macroeconomic issues. The authors also recommend ways that the United States and Japan can cooperate to strengthen the global system in several areas of common interest.
