Book Description
Over the last 10 or 15 years there has been a revival of labor and trade union internationalism. This regeneration is attracting the attention of a new generation of committed thinkers who are deploying new types of scholarship. Labor internationalism is looked at not only in terms of political economy or industrial and international relations, but also in terms of social movement theory and in relationship to global civil society.Notions of labor-community alliances, or the alliance of labor with radical-democratic social movements, are being projected onto the world stage. Radical social geographers have made a notable contribution to this debate by focusing on the scaled politics of labor organisation. This collection, co-edited by scholars from an older and younger generation, is a very original attempt to grapple with the challenges of globalization for labor. The collection includes contributions from academics and activists based in the North and South.Includes chapters from leading labor activists including Kjeld Jacobsen, International Secretary of the largest Brazilian trade union federation (the CUT) and Dan Gallin, Chair of the Global Labor Institute, GenevaFocuses on the interconnections between labor internationalism and the environment, women and race in North and South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and South Africa.Provides an up-to-date review of the academic literature on labor internationalism while exploring contemporary examples of workers' organization.

Ever since Hewlett-Packard emerged from one in 1939, a "garage" has come to symbolize the no-holds-barred mentality that fosters the kind of creativity that drove this company--and the dozens more it spawned--to heights theretofore unknown. Bernd Schmitt, a Columbia Business School professor who has written several well-received marketing books (Experiential Marketing, Marketing Aesthetics) takes this image to the next level in Build Your Own Garage by relaying strategies that readers can adapt to their own enterprises whether they are housed in a converted parking structure or not.
As one might suspect from a book that advocates the unorthodox, Schmitt chooses to deliver his ideas in an unconventional manner. Each chapter begins with an elaborate short story by Laura Brown that encapsulates its central concepts (such as a vampire tale based on Bram Stoker's Dracula that illustrates how "the strictures of traditional corporate culture are enough to suck the life energy out of anyone"). Also sprinkled throughout are photographs and images by graphic artist Gail Anderson, which simultaneously reinforce the book's themes (on topics including technology, branding and "customer experience management") and distance it from buttoned-down management tomes that espouse the very group-think Schmitt is trying to eliminate. Those seeking new ideas who are not turned off by unique presentations should find this intriguing. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Is your company all bizz -- filled with professional managers, accountants, and financial planners who produce "smooth operations" but offer no customer savvy or soul? Or is it all buzz -- filled with talk, hype, and the brainstorming of half-cooked ideas that often lead nowhere?
To capture the best of these dichotomous worlds, creativity expert Bernd H. Schmitt and accomplished business writer Laura Brown introduce a groundbreaking model of a creative organization they call "The Garage." This powerful new framework demonstrates how any executive can manage the creative tension between the analytic, rational side of business and its dynamic, innovative side. After laying out the broad mission, or "blueprint," for constructing The Garage, Schmitt and Brown present The Toolbox -- specific instruments for infusing creativity into all aspects of a business -- and show how to use The Blueprint and The Toolbox as essential strategy, recruiting, resource, and communications devices. At the center of this immensely readable book are the "Mastercrafts of The Garage" -- technology, branding, and customer-experience management -- the organizational forces that guarantee creative efforts are coordinated and well implemented to provide competitive advantage.
To illustrate particular aspects of creativity, Schmitt and Brown open each chapter with a story or "business parable," each written in a different genre -- horror, detective, love story, or fairy tale -- accompanied by evocative photographs. They also draw on scores of cutting-edge examples of creative, innovative ventures such as American Express's Blue, W Hotels, Eli Lilly's "Answers That Matter," SAP, and NTT DoCoMo's i-mode.
Build Your Own Garage is timely and instructive reading for any manager charged with the mandate to bring to market quickly the most useful and innovative products and services. The book's Web site is www.BuildTheGarage.com
Customer Reviews:
All Buzz and No Bizz.......2005-03-05
This is an incredibly structured book about creativity. Although I agree with most of what he says, I find little value in this book. The thing that I disagree with most is the need for tension between bizz and buzz. I know that harmony between the two is not only acheivable but more productive.
The short stories about real companies earned this book its second star. They had real value.
To the writers of the 5 star reviews that convinced me to buy this book, I would ask "How in the world did you manage to walk away with anything of practical value?" It reads like an outline -- five steps to this, four tools for that, two types of that, three stages of the other thing. How boring!! And what a cluttered mind!!
In a sense, it is a great road map but tells you nothing about road conditions or the best route to take. To me, the creative stories just took up space and slowed me down. There is more information in a three frame Dilbert cartoon than in one of these stories.
I managed an innovation group for a fortune 100 company for 23 years and my experience taught me that people who try to create a "Cookbook" for creativity are usually devoid of it.
This would be a great $6.00 book.
Clever stories but no handbook.......2001-12-31
The book benefits from amusing anecdotes but is very light on actual help for putting in place a workable framework for managing business innovation.
Wake-Up Call for Traditional Marketing Literature.......2001-10-31
Finally somebody tearing down the "dusty" rules and old-fashioned formats of how to write a marketing book. This book is not only creative, well thought-out, and informative it is especially fun to read.
An absolute must-read!
Build Your Own Garage.......2001-08-08
Another brilliant book fom Bernd Schmitt (the man behind "Experiential Marketing"). Very creative, great ideas about managing and adding creativity to yr organization. I loved the website too --buildyourowngarage.com. Very creative, hand-drawn design!
Sparking Corporate Creativity.......2001-08-08
Having read Schmitt's books on marketing, I was very interested to see him branching out into the field of corporate creativity. "Build Your Own Garage" is a really interesting, quirky book that sparks the imagination and also offers practical, concrete tools that managers can use.
I believe that "Build Your Own Garage" is the first business book on creativity that really expresses the complexity of the creative process. Encouraging and managing creativity in a large organization is not a simple job. Schmitt and Brown approach the topic from different angles--analyzing the role of creativity in business organizations, detailing real-world examples of creative initiatives, and also offering creative "business parables" to show different facets of creativity in the workplace. (Look especially for the vampire story about "the Corporate Undead"!)
For all its quirkiness, "Build Your Own Garage" deals with corporate creativity in a down-to-earth way. This is not a giddy, dot-com, anything-goes approach to creativity. The book fully acknowledges the importance of business fundamentals and proposes a variety of realistic techniques to improve performance through creativity. Not surprisingly given Schmitt's background, the chapter on Branding is particularly strong.
"Build Your Own Garage" is a quick and enjoyable read that offers some useful insights into corporate creativity. I highly recommend it.

Colour Atlas of Vertebrate Anatomy (An Integrated Text and Dissection Guide)
Manufacturer: Bolsover Press
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: 0950767603 |
Product Description
The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to comparative vertebrate anantomy for biology undergraduates. The information is presented in the form of colour photographs of step-by-step dissection stages intedgrated with a text on comparative anatomy. Dissection plays an important part in understanding the anantomy of an animal and this book has been designed to make full use of the wealth of information made available through dissection, and they represent examples of the six classes of vertebrates and in most cases they can be used as a guide to dissection of other vertebrates in the same class. Each of the six chapters deals with one animal and opens with information on the theoretical evolutionary history of the class to which it belongs. The comparative anatomy of the vertebrate brain is considered in the final chapter.

Book Description
The egg has been an important food throughout human civilisation, however consuming eggs has had both negative and positive connotations. The decline in the consumption of eggs over the past few decades has lead researchers from many different disciplines to look at the egg beyond its traditional food value, and to focus on economically viable biomedical, nutraceutical and ovo-biotechnologies. This book is based on proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Egg Nutrition and Newly Emerging Ovo-Biotechnologies, held in Banff, Canada, April 1998. Written by international experts, the book describes food fats and chronic diseases, the egg as a life-supporting chemical house, emerging nutraceutical biotechnologies, food safty and newly emerging pasteurization techniques.

Customer Reviews:
the only fishing guide for the beartooths.......2006-05-21
Pat Marcuson knows the beartooths. If you are planning a trip into the Absaroka/Beartooth wilderness area you need two things a good map and this book. After a few trips into the Montana wilderness especially the Beartooths you will quickly find out you need to know what your up against and what going to be there when you get there. Pat's book will give you the best fishing advice because he's been there and fished the lakes for a decade working for Montana's Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. So again if you're a fisherman looking for trout in the Beartooths you have to get this book.
Best Fishing Guide.......2005-06-27
This is the best fishing guide that I have ever read. When I first purchased the book, I had little experience or success with fishing for trout in mountain lakes. I had taken an earlier backpacking trip to the Beartooth Mountains, but only caught 4-5 fish in 9 days. Then I purchased and studied this book in detail and during my next two 9-day backpacking trips to the Beartooth Mountains, I caught fish for dinner almost every night. Where once I had to settle for catching small brook trout, I now could plan trip routes to catch big fat Cutthroat trout for dinner. It was a true joy to read the detailed descriptions of each mountain lake and to understand Pat's reasoning behind stocking each lake with specific trout species. Not only that, but Pat gives you details on what years are the best to fish each lake based on their individual stocking schedules. Finally, Pat gives invaluable fishing tips such as how to locate and catch fish in these remote mountain lakes. I thank Pat for what has become a lifelong joy of trout fishing throughout the west.
A great guide book.......2005-04-05
The author managed the fisheries and fish stocking program in the Beartooths for many years, and provides enormous detail in this book about every lake that has fish. There have been some changes since he wrote the first edition, and not all of them are noted in this latest edition (1997) but, overall, the info is great. I don't know of a similarly complete and authoritative fishing guide to any other wilderness area. One small gripe: this book talks solely about the lakes of the Beartooths without mentioning that some of the best fishing is in the feeder and outlet streams, some of them a long way from the nearest lakes.
Buy it even if you're not going fishing.......2004-11-12
Mr. Marcuson clearly has an encyclopedic knowledge of his subject, and communicates it well. Even if you're not planning to fish the area, you'll easily get your money's worth from his descriptions of scenic attractions, camping possibilities, trails, routes, wildlife, and other background information - as well as an assurance of where the fishermen and outfitters won't be if you're looking for the most in wilderness solitude.
My caveats are minor:
1. The index follows the same scheme as the book (organized by drainage), which I found to be a nuisance when looking for a lake by name.
2. You may need a magnifying glass for the maps showing the lake index numbers.
3. Restarting the lake index numbers at 1 for each drainage makes it easier find the wrong description; this could easily be addressed by numbering all of the lakes sequentially, or using a drainage prefix character.
4. A couple of additional indexes organizing the lakes by size, species habitation, abundance, most recent stocking year, and so forth wouldn't have cost too much and would have made the book much easier to use as a reference. Maybe Mr. Marcuson was trying to keep it from being too easy to find his favorite fishing holes, though.
This book is indespensible for a Beartooth-Absaroka hiker!.......1999-01-05
Sometimes the hardest part of getting to Beartooth-Absaroka lakes is finding the trailhead. Great detail is given by Pat Marcuson in traveling this incredible area. After 50/60 trips into this wilderness I wouldn't be without this book! I met Pat several times in the late seventies and his knowledge of this area is quite remarkable and reflected in this book.

ASIN: 1560446560 |
Book Description
Montana's Beartooth Mountains have about 300 miles of hiking trails. If you're only going to be there for a day or two and need a hike that is not too physically demanding, which trail do you choose? This book answers that question. It includes short descriptions and maps of the author's favorite easy day hikes in the Beartooth Mountains. All of the hikes in this book are fairly short, on well-defined, easy-to-follow trails that take you to the Beartooth's spectacular scenery-without taking you to physical extremes. Features 23 hikes.

Indispensable.......1999-03-20
I live in southwest Montana, and I can say that this is really the best resource for those who want to explore the Beartooths. The amount of information provided for each hike is amazing - what an undertaking it must have been to put this together! The result is a very readable, most informative guide. There's a reason that there aren't a plethora of guides to the Beartooths on the market - it's been done right the first time.

Book Description
FISHING THE BEARTOOTHS, 2nd edition (Lyons)
An Angler’s Guide to the Area’s Best Fishing Spots
Pat Marcuson
There are more than 1,000 lakes and streams in the magnificent Beartooth and Absaroka Mountains on the Montana-Wyoming border. Many of these waters teem with colorful fish; others are barren. Some are easily accessible; others are tough to find. So how does an angler figure out where to go and how to get there? It’s all here in the newly updated edition of Fishing the Beartooths—now including the Crazy Mountains.
This guide answers every angler’s questions about stocking schedules, fish abundance, precise location coordinates, elevation, surface area, and maximum depth for each lake; plus clear descriptions of trails, distances, landmarks, terrain, and even availability of firewood. Each page is enriched with first-hand descriptions, advice, humor, and knowledge of the area’s history. Fishing the Beartooths will prove an indispensable reference today and for years to come for seasoned veterans as well as first-time visitors.
Before writing this book, Pat Marcuson spent ten years surveying and sampling the lakes of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

Good Stuff.......2007-08-13
I received this journal book as a gift, and have throughly enjoyed it. My recent purchase of the journal was for me to give to a friend as a birthday present. I know she'll enjoy recording her goals, thoughts, fears and ideas in this clever journal as much as I have!
Publish yourself in color and creativity.......2007-05-11
this is your chance to see what your words look like while mingled with sark's.....journaling, i feel, is crucial to living a productive and positive life...if you don't have a lot of experience in being creative and/or journaling, this is the perfect starter for you...and it's great for any age, any sex!
Sparks your creativity.......2007-04-26
I love this book!
This was given to me as a gift. I've been looking for something to unleash my inner soul and creativity within, and this is just the book for that!!! My colorful pages and her carefree instructions brings you back to your childhood days where you're free to rant and write anything under the sun. Definitely not your typical journal.
A Nice Surprise!.......2006-02-25
I wanted a new journal to start off the new year and ordered Sark's Journal and Play!Book. When it first arrived I was a little disappointed because it was not a traditional Journal. But once I started using it and finding the inspiration within it's beautifully colored and drawn pages, I couldn't put it down. Sark prompts you to write of your hopes and fears, wishes, and desires, and memories of long ago. I bought some special Journal Markers and have had so much fun creating pictures while writing down my memories. If looking to have some fun whle journaling- and willing to not be rigid about keeping a "traditional" journal- then this book will provide a fabulously creative outlet!
Expensive Blank Book.......2005-11-20
I've bought a lot of 'blank journals' over the years and some as much or more as the $19.95 I paid for this book when it first came out, but I knew that I was buying a blank journal. In this case I thought I was buying something with a little more substance.
This book is basically a large blank book with some colorful drawings throughout and several pages with a few words written to give you suggestions of what to fill the pages with, but even the words are very simplistic and don't offer much in the way of prompts.
It was a huge disappointment and in my opinion a waste of twenty dollars.

Great homes.......2007-02-07
After reading the book I concluded I have zero hope of building one and I need to contact the author to build it for me. Brilliant brouchure for his company. I would take off stars for the flagrant selling but you know what it is just that good a book on the subject and the fact is its hard work and he is good at it. Hell just buy the book and have them build it.
A book about very, very big houses.......2003-02-05
This book contains wonderful pictures of homes that are mostly 5,000 sq ft and larger. With one exception it completely ignores fine smaller timberframe homes. I was reminded more of ski lodges than homes by the places featured. But the pictures are nice and if a 5,000 sq ft plus size house is what you're interested in I suppose this book has some interesting ideas.
A Must if you are thinking of building a Timber Frame.......2001-08-06
Whether you are going to act as general contractor, or hire it all out, this book is a great over view of all of the aspects of building a Timber Frame. While not dwelling in great detail, it has lots of drawings, photos, and descriptions, to acquaint the reader with construction techniques, electrical and plumbing considerations, and room layouts in a typical Timber Frame home. Definitley another fine book from Mr. Benson.
An honest and complete.......2000-06-09
This is by far the best of several books I purchased on building timber frame homes. I started with a list of questions about shrinkage, sound proofing, electrical, plumbing, etc. and found clear concise answers to all of them through text, drawings, and photos.
I trust experts (like this author) who talk about the mistakes they've made and show me how to avoid them. He presents options and if you decide to pick the lower rated ones, he describes the likely consequences and how to minimize them.
great resource.......1999-12-24
This book is an excellent guide to the craft of timberframing and complete house design and finishing. I have just finished building my own red oak timber framed house in Tedds back yard here in New Hampshire and found many valuable hints and tips throughout this book, especially liked the sections on plumbing and wiring which can be a challenge in a timber frame house. I also agree with another reviewer that the quality of the book is excellent and deserves a place on your coffe table for guests to peruse. To top it all off Tedd is a very honorable and genuine person who espouses the inherent charms of living in a well crafted timber frame house better than any other books or articles I have read on the subject. Every day in my new home is a real delight and I never get tired of viewing the fine joinery throughout the house. Benson Woodworking also has an excellent web site to examine much of the steps in building a timber frame house. Also for those of you who enjoy the photos in this book , Tedd has a brand new book out showing dozens of homes they have built in the past in beautiful photographic form.
