    Book Description

"A serious reconsideration of the 'economics of science' is long overdue," say Philip Mirowski and Esther-Mirjam Sent in the introduction to Science Bought and Sold. Indeed, it is only recently that one could speak of a field of economics of science at all. Although it has long been accepted that economics can provide useful tools with which to understand science, economics has only lately shifted its focus to the economic agent as information processor, making it more broadly applicable to science.
Bringing together central themes in this emerging discipline, the editors have assembled important articles that provide a wider context and background against which the economics of science can be evaluated. Roughly one-third of the essays presented here are original papers, and the rest are critical articles previously published in the field. From essays examining economic welfare to the idea of scientists as agents to the digital aspects of higher education,Science Bought and Sold presents a comprehensive overview of the new directions of this expanding area.

Why do some companies come and go while others endure? According to McKinsey & Company, Inc. consultants Mehrdad Baghai, Stephen Coley, and David White, the secret to a lasting enterprise is sustained growth. In The Alchemy of Growth, the authors offer a practical guide for jumpstarting expansion and keeping it going. "Growth is a noble pursuit. It creates new jobs for the community and wealth for shareholders. It can turn ordinary companies into stimulating environments where employees find a sense of purpose in their work," they write. "Growth's transformative power is akin to the alchemy of old."

The authors describe the approaches that have succeeded in helping their corporate clients around the world to step up the pace. For instance, companies must simultaneously focus on "three horizons" critical to growth. The first is the current bread-and-butter of the firm; the second, the fast-developing entrepreneurial ventures; and the third, the ideas that will germinate into tomorrow's profits. The best part of the book: the real-life examples of firms that have transformed themselves from laggards to supercharged growth companies. Take Disney, for example. After founder Walt Disney's death in 1966, the company stagnated, with its theme park and film business slipping. But after Michael Eisner took over in 1984, Disney boosted its average annual returns to 29 percent, on the strength of growth in such new avenues as Disney stores, ESPN, and resort development. The Alchemy of Growth is an instructive handbook for managers interested in spurring their companies to new heights. --Dan Ring

        Book Description

From experts at McKinsey & Company's world-renowned growth practice comes a highly practical, field-tested approach to initiating and sustaining corporate growth

Growth unleashes benefits beyond the economic. It revitalizes organizations and invigorates the people in them, creating energy, a sense of purpose, and the glow of being on a winning team. Yet growth is often elusive, achieved at unacceptable costs, or managed in fits and starts. Based on over three years of research and application at high-performing companies around the world, The Alchemy of Growth is a comprehensive, practical approach to initiating, achieving, and sustaining profitable growth-today and tomorrow.

4 out of 5 stars Learn how to build growth into a business plan.......2006-02-28

Sustained growth is the motivation of any profit-making organization. As the authors point out, few organizations achieve sustained growth. Most have really good years, and those can be followed by really poor years. The authors see most firms faltering some point in their history unable to sustain growth.

By building growth into a business plan, the authors explain a method that will call for practical growth and help to build an enduring enterprise. Regardless of the size of a business, by following the authors' advice of managing across three "horizons" at once, the company will grow successfully and, most importantly, sustain that growth.

These three horizons reflect the company's present, short-term future, and long-term future. One must be able to manage these three horizons effectively by:
        · defending and growing core businesses
        · building up new core businesses for the future
        · planting the seeds that may become potential businesses for the long term.

The authors point out that managing all three of these is no easy task. There will be areas where the priorities and requirements for these three horizons will conflict. This book will help leaders manage through these conflicts.

They will also learn how to:

        · overcome a company's inertia
        · build momentum for and through growth
        · sustain growth

4 out of 5 stars Exhilarating and Exhausting.......2005-05-01

This book provides a easy-to-understand mental model for thinking about organizational growth. However, the concept of growing and managing three "horizons" of growth at the same time exhilarates and exhausts. This book could be enhanced by incorporating sustainable principles like the Triple Bottom Line: People, Planet, and Prosperity.

5 out of 5 stars A strategic stairway to business success.......2000-06-09

A perspective on corporate growth and change which works through the need to maintain a simultaneous focus on three 'horizons' - today's business, emerging businesses and longer term options and the implications for strategy, management and structures.

As you would expect of a book out of the McKinsey stable, this is on an issue of importance to business, is well researched and analysed and very readable and well presented. As you would also expect, it is focused on large corporates, and on strategies for their business success, as measured by exceptional growth and returns to stockholders.

It provides one important perspective on the issue of corporate growth and development, to be compared with other perspectives.

There are obvious comparisons with Collins & Porras: 'Built to Last' both in the concern with continuing exceptional performance over an extended period and in the care taken to explain the research base from which the findings are derived. However, whereas Collins & Porras are concerned primarily with values and culture, Baghai et al are primarily interested in strategies for the selection, development and management of a portfolio of businesses and the implications of those strategies for structuring, staffing and operations.

The fundamental thesis is simple and can be stated in a few propositions:

The companies that have been successful in maintaining high rates of growth with superior profitability are those that have learnt to manage well to three different time horizons at the same time - today's business, the next generation of emerging businesses, and the longer term options out of which the next generation of businesses will arise.

In order to develop longer term options into 'core profit engines', a series of measured steps (concerned with finding ways of profitably building core capabilities and markets) are required, which the authors call 'stairways'. In the nature of things, not all stairways will lead to future core businesses, so a variety of initiatives need to be carried forward together. Management of the 'stairways' should receive significant senior management attention.

The skills and temperaments required to manage current business, to develop new business and to search out viable future options are widely different one from the other. The key to maximising the profitability of today's business is excellence of execution. Emerging businesses require business builders - the typical entrepreneurial temperament, while the identification of future options requires lateral thinkers and visionaries.

In consequence, the style of organisation and internal culture most appropriate to each of these foci are also different. Large corporates tend to find difficulty in encompassing these very different cultures. The authors discuss in some depth the resulting issues of internal culture, recruitment, structuring and transition, and their strategic management.

The strength of the book is that the authors identify a key issue in business success - the development and maintenance of a vigorous portfolio of businesses over the longer term - and work through the implications with clarity and thoroughness.

The cost of that approach is that other equally significant issues are assumed or left in the background. It is necessary to balance the valuable perspective offered with others that are also important. It is also necessary to be aware of the underpinning tacit assumptions - for example, the underlying metaphor of organisation adopted by the authors appears to me to be much nearer that of the organisation as a (money) machine, than that of the organisation as an organism. There is a marked contrast with the emphasis in, for example de Geus: 'The Living Company'. This is not to say that either is wrong, only that neither is complete.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful models and abstractions.......2000-06-05

It seems like a no-brainer that companies need to grow in order to survive or compete, and this book isn't interesting because it tells us what we already know. What's interesting about this book is that the authors do a wonderful job of taking substantial research, abstracting the trends, and rendering their findings into very clear and usable models and messages that can help most managers who are thinking about growth. It was particularly interesting for me, as I work as an ebusiness consultant for a large IT integrator and many of my customers are trying to start new staircases (as described in the book) via Internet channels and I can immediately see the applicability of Alchemy to what they're trying to do.

The book is a quick read (almost comically quick, given the price) and mercifully low on buzz words. Right now, I don't see the appendix as being particularly useful, but I may find it more so later. Annotating the bibliography would have added a lot of value.

5 out of 5 stars Good book to think about the future of your company.......1999-10-09

An useful book ! Surviving in the future requests perspectives and actions. Companies have a life cicle and gaining right to survive for a long time is not simple. So entrepreuners, directors and managers should think and act carefully for ensuryng the future of their companies, because there's not certitude of existing for decades.

            Book Description

Like its predecessor, Biogeography, Second Edition, aims to integrate the specialized subdisciplines that threaten to divide the field. It combines ecological and historical perspectives to show how contemporary environments, earth history, and evolutionary processes have shaped the distributions of species and the patterns of biodiversity. It illustrates general patterns and processes using examples from different groups of plants and animals from diverse habitats and geographic regions.

Biogeography, Second Edition, consists of 19 chapters, organized into five sections. The book is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of figures and maps, and contains a glossary and extensive bibliography. Starting from simple facts and principles, and assuming only a rudimentary knowledge of biology, geography, and earth history, the book seeks to explain the relationships between the patterns of plant and animal distributions and the mechanistic processes that have produced them. Throughout, the emphasis is on the interplay between unifying concepts and the evidence that supports or challenges these ideas.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory approach to Biogeography.......2001-06-12

This book written by some of the best authors known in the field comprises a quite extensive overall view of biogeography, its fundaments, beginnings, divisions, schools and relatively new applications and inner relations with other sciences. It contains also a copy of the original zoogeographic regions map created by Wallace. This book resembles the whole biogeography curse taught in the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, UNAM. which is quite exceptional and has the best scientists-profesors in Latin America. If you are looking for a "has it all" biogeography book this one is a must have for undergraduates and graduates students interested in comparative biology, systematics and distributions of taxa within time and space. The review has only four stars for strictly brand new additions of up to date biogeographical information are not included in this edition, yet, but for a three year old book it is a minor problem.

              Book Description

In the late 1980s, a female baby elephant was born on the plains of Southern Africa. In a "cull," her family was slaughtered. Only the newborn female's life was spared. Terrified and bewildered the young elephant was transported to America to be sold. Bob Norris is a cowboy with an enormous empathy for animals. Handsome as a movie star, he was the Marlboro Man, with his face appearing on billboards around the world. But something was missing. When the hurt, vulnerable little elephant, Amy, came into his life, an incredible bond between the most unlikely of friends was forged.Bob adopted Amy and through close observation, gentle training, humor, and endless perseverance, this accomplished horseman gradually coaxed Amy into overcoming her mistrust of humans, and her fear of the world. Amy became a beloved member of the Norris family, and partner to the ranch hands, but Bob knew from the start that the ultimate goal was for Amy to regain her confidence and her independence - even, if it were possible, to go back to the savannahs of Africa. Amy may have left the cowboy's life, but she never left his heart. This is a story of mutual friendship, of genuine love and compassion, and foremost, this is an American story with roots that run deep in the values and traditions of the American West.

              5 out of 5 stars Elephant story.......2007-01-22

I loved this book. My 7 year old loves elephants and although this is a bit over her reading level, I got it for her and ended up reading for myself. It is a wonderful story about a female elephant and her rescue from Africa, then her tales of growing up on a ranch out west in the U.S. It is a fascinating story about African elephant life, the rancher who adopted her, Texaco, Malboro, African politics, and circus life all rolled into the unusual story of an elephant named Amy. I had no idea elphants were socially such advanced creatures. Plus, I got so much information in such a quick and easy read. Thanks to Malcolm Macpherson for his well researched story.

5 out of 5 stars Amy is in Arkansas.......2005-10-03

The true story of Bob and his good natured Amy. It is a wonderful read for anyone who loves animals but Amy's story did not really end the way the book implies. Instead, Amy resides at Riddle's Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary in Arkansas. I don't believe the author intentionally misleads the reader but I think the plans just fell through in the end and everyone decided it was best. I saw first-hand the excellent care and freedom she is given at Riddle's and approve whole-heartedly of the true ending.

5 out of 5 stars An unexpected great read with joy, sadness, and humor.......2005-09-18

This is an exceptional novel. I loved every moment of this beautiful story of the love and friendship between a man and his elephant. I cried and laughed and sat in awe of the beauty and wonder of this book. While the begining starts raw, powerful and mournful, don't be discouraged. This only last for a few pages. Then the story just continues to get better and better. I was extremely surpised by the quality of this novel. Overall, I just loved this book! I plan on reading it again and again. I recommend it to all people, not just animal lovers. It will surpise you as much as it did me, I'm sure.

              5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story.......2005-09-10

This is a wonderful story of the connection between a man and his pet, this pet just happens to be an elephant. You will find out that the Marboro Man was not just a good-looking cowboy, but a man of exceptional depth and compassion. This is not great literature, but it is a great story and well told. The emotional lives of this unlikely pair will inspire a closer connection between man and beast.

              Book Description

An instructional guide to an increasingly popular sport, this book reviews the basics of skateboarding, the mental and emotional side of the sport, and what it takes to become an advanced skater. As aggression is a key factor to skating success, this book attempts to pinpoint where the risks begin to outweigh a skater's chance for reward and success. Also included are sequential shots of 25 street and park tricks, to help skaters visualize and learn new concepts and skills.

4 out of 5 stars At least it was written by a skateboarder.......2003-03-10

Skateboarding books have yet to truly capture the art, but Steve Badillo makes a valiant attempt in Skateboarding: New Levels. In Skateboarding, Steve combines interviews with seasoned pros, trick tips, and information about how to upstart a skateboard following in anytown, USA. While the interviews with some well known professional skateboarders seem like a good idea, the questions asked and the responses given do little to help a skateboarder just starting out or an intermediate trying to further his or her expertise. The questions are well intended with an example being "how do you deal with fear?", but the responses seem to general and generic to help like "I try to be relaxed." As the book progresses to trick tips, anyone would realize that the trick tips are way too specific and random to help someone trying to progress. The combinations make no sense, going from a one footed Japan air to a backside feeble 180 out. This random assortment of trick tips feels unbalanced and voids the potential for real help once again. The final segment, "building a park", is actually the only useful and helpful section of the book. In this chapter, Werner and Badillo identify the advantages to all types of skateparks and approaches to get them funded and approved. Without the chapter on skatepark construction, this book would have been a 2 star book, but with the useful information about building a park and the fact that the information is true because it was written by a real skateboarder, this book is a 4 star contender.

4 out of 5 stars Very good if you have the time.......2007-02-22

I found the book very useful and it is well laid out.
Where I got caught up though is that I needed something quick and nimble, where I could quickly look things up. My stay was limited.
That is where I saw other titles with friends of mine that achieved that a little better. That is the only reason I rank it as 4 not 5.

4 out of 5 stars Good for basic words.......2002-03-12

This book is good for basic words but lacks background information that would be helpful. Still, a greater starter book!

5 out of 5 stars This is the only book you need to start learning Chinese........1998-10-12

I put 5 stars because it's worth nothing less. This book has more information in it than most of my $30-50 books.

This book has some really useful phrases, which are all written out in 3 different ways. English translation, followed by standard PinYin, and last in line, Chinese characters for Mandarin. A final column on the phrase pages has a handfull of key, (useful) words, and small phrases labelled 'what you may hear'.

The four basic tones or inflections are explained simply. The pronunciation guide in this book is a little abstract but sufficient. As for pronuciation of Chinese, NO BOOK will be able to teach the inflections and pronunciations accurately. However, if you've practiced Chinese with an experienced or native speaker, the book will give enough information to help you recall accurate pronunciation.

This book is about half E-C / C-E dictionary with 3,500 entries, according to the cover. I've been looking at this book for about three years now, still I find new information in it all the time.

The print quality is crisp black on @24lb. white paper, not thin paper. There are 2 different fonts used for the Chinese characters in the book. Unstylized strokes for the phrases, and stylized for addtional words, and dictionary entries. The illustrations are kinda cheezy, as it goes in language books. They're funny at least.

Not to take anything away from this book, but there aren't a lot of color schemes that I would personally use. Maybe a few here and there, but definitely not enough that I would purchase this one again if I had to. But it does assist you in kicking around some other ideas. Not a bad book, but not my favorite either.

This book is a great resource for those who sometimes have trouble putting together a good color scheme (and who doesn't have those troubles from time to time?). It's true that the colors won't look exactly the same as they do in the book. But this is still a great source for inspiration when you're stuck. You can use the formulas in the book as a starting place, and tweak them as necessary to make them work for you. I keep this book at my desk, and I and others that I work with refer to it often.

4 out of 5 stars This is a creative tool. Don't use it as a Pantone Color Guide........2006-11-30

                  Fun, inspiring, portable, informative, usefull.

With over 1000 color combos grouped into minimally-versatile-titled chapters, concise brainstorming and color usage tips scattered around, and some carefully thought-out touches, this book is meant as a friendly companion who provides fuel for creativity to color users of all types as they explore color combinations for their specific projects, and it proved quite usefull to my design work. The color combos picked show that the author is a keen observer of color trends, as most of them can be applied handsomely to real work.

Obviously targeted towards beginners, it can provide ideeas even to experienced professionals. This is a book that pays out handsomely the more you spend time with it, as it mysteriously manages to benefically influence the color-centers in your brain :)

The book's strong points easily outweight it's few flaws -- color formula inaccuracy (you'll never get the right hues on your screen, use your eyes instead), some "useless" color-combos (meaning I can't figure out ANY style of project where they could be reasonably used), and obsolete info regarding color usage on the web. Some more information on color-theory is also a thing to be desired. Yeah, and don't expect to color like Raphael, Bruegel or Miro :) - even if the samples are provided, they look nothing like the real thing.

Although I feel I somewhat outgrew it and don't use it as often as before, this is one of the books I carry with me everyday at work.
