At the same time, nearly three-quarters of the world's most important fish species face extinction due to overfishing and environmental contamination. Successful Fisheries Management explores the possibilities for effective and sustainable fisheries management across the globe. Seven case studies examine both the successes and failures of fisheries from India to Australia to Senegal. Experts in their field, the contributors offer their audience a unique and absolutely essential examination of international fisheries management.

Book Description
One of the most widely used techniques for treating soils contaminated with volatile organic compounds, soil vapor extraction (SVE) can also be applied to semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) if the soil is heated, by applying electromagnetic energy in the radio frequency (FR) range, to increase the vapor pressure of the contaminants. Although RF-SVE systems used in previous field demonstrations have had varying degrees of success, questions remain concerning its viability and cost-effectiveness. Soil Vapor Extraction Using Radio Frequency Heating: Resource Manual and Technology Demonstration covers detailed scientific and engineering information that answers these questions. The book includes the necessary databases, equations, and example calculations for RF heating. The theoretical and practical information included will facilitate future testing of RF-SVE treatment of soils. Additionally, the book provides information for a full-scale engineering design of potential RF-SVE applications. The authors use this information to examine predicted performance, magnitude of costs, and modifications to the design that may decrease cost. Soil Vapor Extraction Using Radio Frequency Heating: Resource Manual and Technology Demonstration gives an economic analysis of this innovative technology and considers other possible applications for it. Stokes Beginner's Guide to Bats
ASIN: 0801849861 |
Book Description
From the African long-tongued fruit bat to the wrinkle-faced bat of Mexico and Central America, Walker's Bats of the World is an astonishingly complete guide to this fascinating, beneficial, and varied order of mammals. It includes scientific and common names, as well as the number and distribution of species, measurements and physical traits, habitat, daily and seasonal activity, population dynamics, home range, social life, reproduction, and longevity. Textual summaries present accurate, well-documented descriptions of the physical characteristics and living habits of bats in every part of the world. Endangered species and those having singular economic importance are given particular attention.
Through five highly praised editions Walker's Mammals of the World has remained the most comprehensive--the preeminent--reference work on mammals. Now for the first time a single large segment of that encyclopedic work--the section on Chiroptera, or bats--is available in paperback as a separate volume. Lavishly illustrated with pictures by noted wildlife photographers, the book includes photographs of many rarely seen bats. As in the complete Walker's Mammals, most photographic illustrations depictlive animals rather than skins or skeletons.
Since publication of the first edition in 1964, Walker's Mammals of the World has become a favorite guide to the natural world for general readers and an invaluable reference for professionals. Now Walker's Bats makes a significant portion of that work accessible to a new audience.
Praise for Walker's Mammals of the World:
"A reference bargain for any library where young readers and old enjoy animals."--Scientific American.
"These well-written, deep-digging summaries are among the best available anywhere."--Natural History

Excellant.......1999-10-08
This book contains one of the most extensive catalogs of the bats of the world that I have ever read. Not for pleasure reading, but great for research.

Book Description
The companion volume to Tony Route's popular "Flyfishing Alaska," this book helps the reader select and tie the flies needed to take trout, char, and salmon throughout Alaska. Tony has chosen 46 proven flies based on his years of experience flyfishing Alaska's rivers, lakes, and saltwater. Brief tying instructions are given for each fly, and the book is filled with anecdotes and fishing advice that make it easy for the visiting flyfisher to know which flies to take and how to fish them.
Customer Reviews:
Book to have.......2006-02-06
If you are preparing a trip to Alaska, this books describes you all you need, starting from flies to use for the differnt species, techniques to fish them, equipment to use, colthes to take with etc.
Tie before you fly........2003-07-18
This handy book provides a detailed instructions for tying a wide variety of flies that will be useful when flyfishing in Alaska. The book is organized into chapters devoted to a particular type of fishing (i.e., still water, streamers, saltwater, etc.). A set of handy tables matching up fly to species and time of the year is provided. Also included is information on how to fish the various flies.
Another two related books of interest are "Flyfishing Alaska" by Route and "Fly Patterns of Alaska" by the Alaska Flyfishers.
Worthwhile for all fly anglers, even non-tyers.......1998-08-27
Route's guide gives a manageable list of flies along with a good amount of reasoning behind each. The timing/species charts are excellent in themselves. This volume is worthwhile for all fly anglers, even non-tyers. In addition to providing a guide for tying/buying flies for Alaska, it gives a good bit of how-to and even a hint of where-to. I used it prior to my most recent Alaskan venture and it was most useful. One question: Why no marabout spiders?

Hard to come by.......2004-10-24
A good antonym "finder" or "dictionary" is very hard to come by. This is the exception. And it doesn't just offer one obscure antonym for each word in the "dictionary" that barely seems to meet the definition. In many cases it offers several. For example, for quotation/quote, it offers four: paraphrase, recapitulation, restatement, summary.
I think this little book is the best of its kind.
Give me a word........2002-12-03
An excellent resource book. I use it every day and it has improved my writing. Or, maybe I just confuse everyone with the multitude of words I appear to have at my command. Recommend this book.
Worth having to improve your writing and vocabulary........2001-12-09
It's right on my desk between my dictionary and thesarus where it belongs. When I can't think of the right word - which happens - it's there. I've used it as much as the other two.
Indispensable for students of English literature.......2000-05-09
Those who study English literature or are involved in translations need to widen their terminology and constantly improve their linguistics. I personally achieved this with numerous dictionaries and one of them was certainly the 21st Century Synonym and Antonym Finder. With its concise and accurate definitions one easily finds the perfect term and also keeps it in mind - and that is also of great importance. With finishing my studies of foreign languages and their literatures, I have been mostly involved in translations and thus been forced to rummage considerably through books and dictionaries - believe me you will find this book indispesanble once you have it.

Book Description
Los Angeles and Southern California have always been a crucible for the experimental in residential design. Here then are the successors to Neutra and Schindler, Lautner and Gehry-architects who break out of the box to create houses that respond to the benign climate and varied topography of Southern California and express the needs and dreams of their clients. From serene white forms to bold expressions of structure, from houses that engage the landscape or ocean to those that turn confined lots to advantage, these are models of creative design. Behind every creative design is a successful architect-client relationship, and Webb gives a rare glimpse of the collaborative process of "designing a house." With some of the best houses built in the past decade, Brave New Houses should appeal to everyone who has thought of designing or owning a house that is one-of-a-kind.
Customer Reviews:
How "Brave" it is depends on the reader.......2005-04-19
Well... If you've just entered the design world of modern living, the content in this book might be dashing and "brave" to you. For most of the readers who are familiar with modern design concept (e.g., me), this book is not "brave" at all. Though it is a recently published book, I felt that it does not catch the pace of cutting-edge modern design simple because I could not get excited at all when viewing the pictures. Plus, this book focuses more on interior than architecture. You need to think about what you need from this book before getting a copy.
A very nice book for leisure reading.......2005-01-13
A very nice book with great photos, however, the floor plans provided are very poor.
Judging from its title, one should know that it is not for most of people. Most of homebuilders work with many constrains, i.e., budge, topographic, dimension of the lots, and not to forget the resell value. Thus they do not have the luxury to orient the house wherever they like and build whatever they like. If one tries to look for practical ideas how to build a house, this book should be the last one to consider. However, I purchased it with full expectation that this was not a practical book, I am happy with what it is. Well, except the floor plans.
good resource.......2004-06-06
Normally when I buy design books I buy for pictures that I use as ideas or reference at work. This book has nice quality photos of the homes at various angles as well as supporting text and floorplans. Being a picture person, I found myself reading and didn't want to put the book down. Lastly, this book is labeled as paperback but I received a hardcover, which I prefer anyways.
Brave New Houses doesn't disappoint.......2004-03-20
Great book with very recent houses. I had seen many of them published in the Sunday LA Times magazine, as well as other places BUT this book provides additional pictures, along with floorplans, and text. The houses represent very current styles and range from small houses to large estates.
Very much worth purchasing.
PS. the book is paper back and approximately 9" x 9" in size
Breaking out of the Box.......2004-01-02
It takes courage to leap into the unknown, but the thirty homeowners featured in this handsome new compilation picked architects who could translate their desires into something they could never have imagined by themselves. Rather than choose an off-the-shelf design, they went for something that was one-of-a-kind. That bold decision brought them lasting satisfaction.
Even if you do more than fantasize about your ideal home, you can learn something from this varied menu of houses. Each has a distinct character, but all open up to nature and conserve energy by pulling in natural light and breezes and blocking direct sun. As Michael Webb observes in his introduction, we spend too much of our lives in boxes--driving, working, and shopping--and we deserve something better to come home to. A new house, or an inventive remodel by a creative architect can revolutionize the way we live.
The thirty completed houses are located from Santa Barbara to San Diego, but most of them are in or around Los Angeles. That gives this book a coherence that is lacking from most anthologies of residential architecture, for each house relates to a similar climate and topography. As a bonus, there are five unrealized projects that show just how far you can break out of the box.
