The Advanced Planner and Optimiser (APO) is the software from SAP dedicated to supply chain management. This book provides an overview about the supported SCM processes and explains how to implement APO in a company. It is written from a long years' experience in implementation projects and provides project managers and team members with the necessary know-how for a successful implementation project. The focus of the book is on introducing modelling approaches and explaining the structure and interdependencies of systems, modules and entities of APO based on the release mySAP SCM 4.1. Another concern is the integration with R/3, both technically and from a process point of view. Since APO projects differ significantly from other SAP projects, some key issues and common mistakes concerning project management are mentioned as well.

Reforestation in tropical areas is usually attempted by planting seedlings but, direct seeding (the artificial addition or sowing of seed) may be an alternative way of accelerating forest recovery and successional processes. This study investigated the effects of various sowing treatments (designed to create different microsite conditions for seed germination) and seed sizes on the early establishment and growth of directly sown rainforest tree species in a variety of experimental plots at three sites in the wet tropical region of north-east Queensland, Australia. The different sowing treatments were found to have significant effects on seedling establishment. Broadcast sowing treatments were ineffective and resulted in very poor seedling establishment and high seed wastage. Higher establishment rates occurred when seeds were buried. Seed size was found to be an important factor affecting establishment in relation to micro-site condition. In general, larger seeded species had higher establishment rates at all three sites than species of small and intermediate seed size, but only in sowing treatments where seeds were buried. Overall these results suggest that direct sowing of seed can be used as a tool to accelerate recolonisation of certain rainforest tree species on degraded tropical lands, but initial success will be dependent on the choice of sowing method and its suitability for the seed types selected. The results also indicate that the recruitment of naturally dispersed tree species at degraded sites is likely to be severely limited by the availability of suitable microsites for seed germination. Consequently the natural recovery of degraded sites via seed rain can be expected to be slow and unpredictable, particularly in areas where soil compaction has occurred.

This study provides specific ecological information on growth and population structure of important timber tree species of the Peruvian Amazon flood plains: Guatteria sp., Terminalia oblonga, Hura crepitans, Guarea macrophylla, Maquira coriacea, Virola elongata, Virola pavonis, and Minquartia guianensis. Furthermore, methods that can be applied to study population structure and growth of trees in natural forests are developed upon. The study is based on data collected over a period of 8 years from permanent sample plots covering a total of 18.6ha in three flood plain forest types at the lower Rio Ucayali. The population structure of the eight species varied considerably with maximum diameters at breast height ranging from 31 to 140cm. For M. coriacea stem densities and basal areas were as high as 159ha^-^1 and 3.4m^2/ha, respectively, but for most other species, stem densities and basal areas were much lower. Seedling densities of the eight species ranged from 1 to 42,002ha^-^1 with a mortality of 27-100% per year and for some species a significant relationship was found between mortality and duration of the flooding period. Diameter increments were analyzed using a simple diameter class approach as well as a more sophisticated single-tree growth model, for which a variety of competition indices were screened. Based on the statistical performance and practicability of the indices it appeared that the most successful measure of competition was the local basal area of trees with diameters exceeding that of the individual in question.

Terminalia oblonga (Ruiz et Pav.) Steud. is a common timber tree in lowland Latin America which is widely utilized and economically and ecologically valuable. The species suffers from reduced natural recruitment but the control of regeneration by environmental factors is incompletely understood. In the forest management plots of the BOLFOR project (La Chonta, Bolivia) we investigated the effects of soil disturbance, litter layer and canopy openness on seedling emergence and survival. Soil disturbance and a thin litter layer favoured seedling emergence, disturbance had also a positive effect on seedling survival, whereas canopy openness had no significant effect on emergence but influenced survival positively. The results are discussed with respect to the life history traits of T. oblonga and forest regeneration, which need to be considered for implementation of sustainable logging strategies and forest conservation. It is concluded that the regeneration of T. oblonga is favoured by moderate logging although the long-term effects need further research.

Our study tested the effects of herbicide application and cattle removal on the survival and growth of three native tree species planted in pastures within a deforested, dry tropical region of Panama. We investigated whether enrichment planting may be a potential, complementing reforestation tool with natural regeneration. Three economically valuable tree species were chosen for the study; Cedrela odorata L., Enterolobium cyclocarpum (Jacq.) Griseb, and Copaifera aromatica Dwyer. Planted seedlings were monitored for survival, root collar diameter and height growth in the presence or absence of two factors; (1) initial herbicide application and (2) cattle. After 16 months, subsamples of seedlings within each treatment were harvested and measured for dry masses and leaf areas. In the initial stages of development, C. odorata seedlings had the greatest growth rates with herbicide application whereas E. cyclocarpum seedlings had the greatest growth rates with cattle exclusion. The combination of these two factors yielded the best growth for both species. Of the three species, C. odorata had the lowest mortality rates (58%), and the greatest average dry mass (@m=403.7g), leaf area (@m=169.3m^2), diameter growth rate (@m=3.7cmyear^-^1) and height growth rate (@m=81.7cmyear^-^1) at 16 months. In addition, in the presence of cattle, C. odorata grew significantly better than E. cyclocarpum. To accelerate forest succession, herbicide should be applied initially and cattle removed before enrichment planting.

Squirrel Wars: Not Just Squirrels.......2007-03-09
The book says Squirrel Wars but it's a book about keeping other creatures out of your yard/garden as well. I was hoping it would be more comprehensive but since it gives tips on other creatures, I thought it had more value. Haven't gotten thru the whole book yet...too busy trying to salvage the bulbs that survived the squirrel attacks.
a truly honest and practical guide.......2000-07-10
Finally, someone has published a guide to dealing with my backyard foes. For years, master gardners, nursery workers, etc. have told me there was absolutely nothing I could do to protect my flowerbeds and bird feeders from squirrels, pesky birds and roaming cats. After reading this book, I know what works and what doesn't. This book not only tells me what to do, I now have some good insight into what's going on in the minds of those little critters (I wish more authors would do this). Yeah!!
My only complaint: the title is a little misleading. I got this book so I could deal with squirrels. This book covers many more backyard critters than squirrels such as cats, crows, deer, raccoons, and so on.
Squirrel Wars Too?.......2000-07-08
An invaluable book for any homeowner who's ever had problems with squirrels (enemy number one), rabbits, racoons, skunks, possums, deer, cats, rats, dogs, even birds, etc. Each section is dedicated to solving a problem with your animal of choice. And that's just it. It could have easily been called "skunk wars" or any other "animal wars" mentioned in this book. I guess he chose squirrels because they seem to be the most persistant animals to invade our backyard. They are truly clever. However, there's another "Squirrel Wars" book that deals with squirrels only, written in 1996, and the author's attempt to outwit them from raiding his birdfeeders. It's funny and serious. I highly recommend both Squirrel Wars. Enjoy while learning.

Many favorite wildlife species wreck havoc on backyard gardens: Squirrel Wars tells how to solve a range of problems, from birds which raid bird feeders and squirrels which are geniuses at food to creatures which nest in chimneys and dig holes in lawns. The best I guide to practice your hieroglyphic calligraphy. I love it.
The best I could find.......2004-03-14
This is one of several books on the subject that I bought because I was late on a decorative commission and had to learn how to write hieroglyphs fast. This turned out to be the only book of any value. Using Gardiner's Sign List to organize the symbols into catagories, Fischer first shows a large drawing of the glyph, then shows with a series of sequential sketches how to arrive at the final design. Using his technique, I was able to achieve satisfactory results in a remarkably short time.
Unlike some of the other authors, Fischer does redraw, modify, or try to "reinterpret" the symbols. I compared his hieroglyphs to photographs of tomb and temple walls and found his to be true to the originals.
The 4th edition contains some additional glyphs and information in supplementary references and addenda.
This is a beautifully designed and bound book, worthy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I use this in conjunction with Wilkinson's "Reading Egyptian Art".
Excellent Guide.......2003-12-11
As others have said, this volume is slim and thankfully clear and concise. The glyphs are simplified to make them easier to draw, but still recognizably hieroglyphs (as opposed to cursive forms or hieratic-- and sometimes clearer than Faulkner). There are many larger illustrations that show the glyph in more naturalistic form; these are quite interesting. When the forms varied significantly over time, all versions are shown (i.e., Old Kingdom form, Middle and New Kingdom form(s).) It's very helpful, for writing and reading.
