Book Description
Economics U$A introduces the reader to economics and how it applies to real world situations. Case studies in each chapter illustrate specific topics such as the savings and loan crisis, economic growth in Asia, deficit cutting, and the shift from communism to capitalism. Find out how environmental issues like global warming affect the economy, how to finance a home and determine mortgage payments, and how the government and the economy influence research, development, and technological innovation.
This Telecourse Study Guide is designed for use in both one- and two-semester courses. It provides students with a crucial link between television programs and text. It will test and reinforce student understanding of the concepts presented both on screen and on the page.
Book Description
This landmark book begins with the premise that an organization must often fundamentally transform its business practices and organizational culture to fully align with and realize the value of product and process innovations. The methods and practices that are set forth give readers the tools to create the essential organizational transformations needed to meet the challenges of a complex, rapidly evolving global economy.
Enterprise Transformation is organized into four parts:
* Introduction to Transformation begins with an introduction and overview of the book. It then features a systems-oriented view of transformation as well as a theo-retical perspective on the forces that propel transformation and the nature in which transformation is pursued.
* Elements of Transformation addresses issues of transformational leadership and organizational and cultural change. Next, it examines transformation principles and case studies relevant to manufacturing, logistics, services, research and development, enterprise computing, and quality management.
* Transformation Practices focuses on transformation planning and execution, financing, bankruptcy, tax issues, public relations, and the lessons learned from a variety of transformation experiences.
* Transformation Case Studies features detailed studies of Newell Rubbermaid, Reebok, Lockheed Martin, and Interface. This part also considers transformation in academia with an overview of fundamental change at Georgia Tech. These case studies demonstrate the application of principles and practices and their results.
The authors of this contributed work are senior executives, leading consultants, and respected academics. Their experience in leading enterprise transformation and supporting management teams is unparalleled. Managers and executives from all industries, as well as business students, will learn about the critical tools needed to transform their organizations to keep pace with market demands and surpass competitors.

What a novel and effective way of presenting information to the novice wine lover. It was a pleasure to learn so much in a painless way. I have made many friends more discernably happy, by giving them a gift copy. "Go thou and do likewise!"

HORRIBLE, RUN AWAY!.......2006-09-14
I've been in math for a while now, and am used to good books that teach well... I've taken, sequentially, pre-algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra, trigonometry, and Calculus I, all in college.
This book is beyond a hard read. Our teacher is not a biologist, but is a mathemitician. I was wondering about chapter 1... its extremely hard and just throws around equations as if you understand them without explaining them. BOO. I had never heard of Discrete Time Dynamical Systems before. I asked my teacher if he even did it... he said, 'Well, yes, in Linear Algebra, after the Calculus 1,2 and 3 series". Agh! He then said we cover in this one semester, what he did in 3 with this book for math, though not as in depth of course. >:(
If you're a pre-medical/dental/vet student, and you have the option to take regular calculus instead, then take it instead! I spend more time on this class than on microbiology or organic chemistry, both of which I'm taking and acing.
Lastly, besides the poor writing, this book is FULL of typos. It make the subject even harder, because the chapters don't cover all the concepts that are in the homework problems... so if there's an examble problem with a wrong answer, which there frequently is, then you'll get screwed up! I'm embarassed for the publisher... they've written so many other better math texts.
F-. Poorly written, a difficult read, spelling errors , and typos in the answers!
Great Introduction to Mathematics for Biologists.......2000-05-08
I bought this book as a "do it yourself" introduction to mathematics (for a biologist). It is quite rare to find a textbook as easy and enjoyable to follow as Frederick Adler's book. The text starts with very little assumed knowledge of mathematics and works through the basics of calculus using interesting examples taken from biology. The exercises at the end of each chapter are straightforward and easy to follow (my only complaint about the book is that they only provide solutions to every second question, so working alone it is hard to check your results). It is rare to find a text (especially in maths) that you can truly work through on your own. I recommend it for any Biologist wishing an intorduction to or to expand the knowledge of the growing field of Mathematical Biology.

Great Book!!!.......2007-10-05
If you love upland game and man's best friend you must buy this book. Mr. Davis shares with his readers a personal side of his life while clearly describing some of the ephemeral reasons why modern man MUST hunt. In this collection of his short stories, you learn about a man passionate about bird hunting and intimately connected to the dogs he takes to the field. The book is well written and unlike some sports writers who feel they must apologize for their sport, this gent understands hunting is as important to his life as the blood that courses through his veins.
Multi-layered view of upland wingshooting.......2006-02-27
I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for the meaning of shooting sport in a world increasingly hostile to it and other elements of tradition and style. Upon reflection, this is a deeply enjoyable book. It conveys a hidden wealth of knowledge and experience about upland wing shooting.
As part of a broader quest for enduring personal style, I am embarked on a systematic program to flesh out a philosophy of contemporary wingshooting. In context, this book is both inspirational and educational. My 4 star rating is provisional and based, knowing myself as I do, on a prediction that I will find more value in a few unread books above this one on my list. Candidly, I still have lots of reading and hunting to do. So, I don't want to finalize any assessment until I complete my reading list entitled "The Upland Road: Wingshooting with Style and Class" and transition it to more a carefully reasoned guide by the same name.
The Tattered Autumn Sky is a collection of personal essays working together to convey a growing sense of sportsmanship and style through the medium of upland wing shooting. Mr. Davis could have called the book, "How To Be a Better Sport". But, I'm sure he would consider that presumptuous. An essential value of the book is that Tom Davis never preaches about sportsmanship. He illustrates it in a background of personal growth, providing a rich context for readers to choose for themselves what, if any, philosophy they would like to bring to/from the field.
In addition to subtle penetrating philosophy, there are also several practical levels on which this book succeeds. First, it excels as a simple survey of game birds and hunting situations in the United States. Second, it provides valuable insights into gun dog training, development and performance. Third, it reveals the sophisticated world of gourmet cooking embedded in the sport. Finally, it offers insight into the social clashes caused by re-gentrification of the, heretofore, widely egalitarian nature of American upland shooting descending from its historical connections to the self-sufficient family farm.
My only complaint about the book (and really it is a small one) is that it is few degrees too personal and too sentimental. I admit this criticism may be unwarranted and only a by-product of my own stoicism. It is understandable, after all, that anyone who enjoys a "social" sport like shooting, fishing or golf would want to relate emotionally to the personalities they have enjoyed in a lifetime of sporting activity. But, it is very easy (as I believe happens in this book) to slip into personal sentiment so far that the readers end feeling deprived of helpful insights that they cannot so easily reproduce for themselves by substitute means.
Back on the positive side, I learned a great deal from this book about the relative merits of the variety of American upland game birds. I share Mr. Davis's enthusiasm for the woodcock, and so, I appreciate his many insights about this elusive game bird. I also enjoyed his insights about the demands of hunting the prairie chicken and sharp-tail grouse. I have, indeed, been looking for an excuse to visit Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota and Iowa. His stories about both the prairie grouses and pheasants give me direction and inspiration for the fall seasons ahead.
The coverage of the hunting for quail, grouse and waterfowl in this book is less than that of pheasant, woodcock and prairie grouse. The coverage, nevertheless, is insightful and helpful as it reinforces the value of a good pointing and retrieving dog. The overall cross-comparisons also bring into perspective the interesting contrast in hunting conditions, shooting technique and cooking tastes.
My personal interests run towards the fusion of American enthusiasm and practicality in sport with received European style and sensibility. I prefer, for example, to hunt in a Barbour coat, a tattersall shirt, a tie, a pair of knee pants and a pair of Le Chameau St, Hubert boots. But, I wear bright orange baseball cap and I enjoy fighting in the thickets to flush the woodcock and climbing the Sand Hills of Nebraska walking the miles needed to track down the elusive sharp-tail.
Intentional or otherwise, Tom Davis succeeds to a high level in conveying useful concepts for anyone searching the woods of life for personal style and philosophy. He achieves this while also conveying an abiding sportsmanship institutionalizing respect for the land, the game, the dogs and the people who converge on this tributary to the search for the good life.
A must read for bird, dog and nature lovers.......2005-12-27
I purchased this book as a gift for my father, a lifelong bird hunter, though not with pointers. My wife and I read chapters at random, we were so touched by the first one chosen we couldn't stop reading. The descriptions of days afield were poignant and touching. This compelling book made us both laugh and cry. We enjoyed every page and felt we had lived these experiences in the author's own boots. I would compare this author to Spiller, Mcquarrie and Hill. I felt as though I had found a new hunting companion in Davis.

Customer Reviews:
It's great and all, but..........2007-09-11
This book is a great photo collection, filled with superb driver profiles and historical information. However, very often, the book is flat-out wrong. Photographs are sorted into incorrect years, races and tracks are misidentified. No, Junior Johnson did not own the #44 Piedmont car. No, Mark Martin did not drive a 1995 Thunderbird in 1999 at Watkins Glen. No, North Wilkesboro is not in New Hampshire. Every mistake you spot makes you question the integrity of the rest of the book that much more.
But great pictures.
A real bargain for NASCAR fans.......2006-12-14
This is an outstanding book, in three ways.
First, it is a comprehensive history of NASCAR from its earliest days, told in short essays and lots of great pictures. There are complete season statistics, point race summaries, etc. There is literally no where else one can find this sort of information.
Second, the book is entertaining. It's not easy to do the kind of in-depth scholarship that underlies this book and make it interesting. That's what the author does. It's literally a page-turner with a gripping narrative.
Third, the book is a very high-quality production. It's a large-format, coffee-table book, the pages are heavy, glossy paper, the binding is extremely sturdy, and the pictures are sharp. This is one of those books that just feels good in your hands, if that makes any sense.
In summary, this is THE book for any NASCAR fan. I'm very happy I bought it, and I think it's a tremendous bargain.
NASCAR Chronicle.......2006-02-06
A hard-core history of NASCAR, from early pre-NASCAR days through modern day racing. This book is structured by year, with complete timelines and highlights of each season, often accompanied by photographs. If you are a new NASCAR fan but lack a background in the history of the sport, then this is a "must have" book for you. Once you learn the history of this sport, you will have a greater appreciation for NASCAR and today's drivers.
A SMALL BOOK WITH LOADS OF INFORMATION .......2006-01-05
I got this today as a gift from my nephew in TX. I have read it with the exception the 2 pages of words only which are before each decade without putting it down. I'll read them tomorrow. It begins with a page of Before NASCAR and then goes yearly from 1947 through 2004. The page devoted to the each year has more information then some wordy books. The pictures are fabulous. I will definitely give this to my friends who like NASCAR in place of some I have given in the past.
It is well worth the money spent.
Enjoy!
One solid piece of work........2005-02-15
I never buy NASCAR books. Ever. Generally they are cheap, poorly written and focus on one or two drivers (can you say Dale Jr? I knew you could). How much fun is that? And please tell me why I'd want to pay for that?
Well, I happened to cruise the bargain bin at the local superchain bookstore, and this happened to catch my eye. I did say I never bought the books, to be sure, but I'm pretty regular about flipping through them to see if just maybe I want it. This one's a keeper, to be sure.
This book covers everything from the early (EARLY) days of NASCAR to the 2003 season. Plenty of pictures, good sidebar features, season highlights, and in the back year-by-year (and race-by-race, I may add) stats. Awesome.
If you enjoy NASCAR, this book is for you. Period.

Start out at the top with the best.......2007-08-11
Since shifting from finding typos for fun to proofreading for pay, I have studied numerous manuals and workbooks; but Peggy Smith's "Mark My Words: Instruction and Practice in Proofreading," in its third edition, is the biggest and best. Taking nothing for granted, she thoroughly explains the rationale and techniques of proof-marking, starting with the basics and working up to the most demanding standards.
Examples are plentiful and specific; the right way to mark is contrasted with the wrong; the distinction between proofreading and copyediting is clarified; and a pageful of the most common marks is printed on a heavy stock insert for quick reference on the job.
There are no less than 38 extensive exercises for you to humble yourself with, vowing improvement next time---dry readings (no text to check against), comparison reading (checking live against dead copy), gaffes requiring tactful queries ("Figures do not equal total: rectify?"), and all sorts of sample menus, statistical tables, chemical formulae, invoices, and headlines---every situation where minute correction of detail is mandatory. It took me twenty-five hours to absorb the text, complete the worksheets, and compare results against the key---time well-spent.
Some exercises are so error-laden that, in the real world, they would be returned to the compositor and re-set first; but if you can emend them without falling prey to error fatigue (the more mistakes there are, the more you miss), you will agree that the book is worth every nickel. (Especially if you catch one or two little oversights Smith's proofreading didn't!) Eei Press publishes many high-grade titles covering all aspects of modern editing, reference, and communications; check them out. Every book on this subject will add something new to your skill set; but for the professional, or the apprentice determined to become one, "Mark My Words" first.
A very worthwhile investment of time and money.......2004-08-22
I acquired this book _while_ working on a proofreading job, took an hour or two out to read the main text of it (eight short chapters), and have been very glad I did. The instructional part of the text, geared toward the professional proofreader, progresses clearly and succinctly, with plentiful examples and no tedious filler about how important proofreading is in the grand scheme of things. The author doesn't talk down to you or try to inflate your self-importance; she just tells you how to perform your task in an efficient, thorough, and professional way.
I've been an editorial freelancer for a couple of years and worked in-house in publishing as well, so I thought I already pretty much knew how to proofread. I had never taken a class in proofing, however, so I wanted to make sure--before getting too far into my first full-length book job for a new and much-desired client--that there weren't any conventions or tricks of the trade that I was missing. Having read the business part of this book, I now feel confident that I can do the job well.
There's a handy cheat-sheet of the most commonly used marks--more detailed than what you'll find in your dictionary--printed both within the text and inside the back cover. Every time I have to mark up something more tricky than the situations handled there, I look it up in the main text. The examples are well chosen and thoughtfully organized, and there are not so many that it takes more than a minute to find the one you're looking for.
The second half of the book comprises mostly exercises--with answer keys. I'm looking forward to doing those when I have some free time.
If you are ever called upon to proofread, I strongly recommend that you get this very practical book.
The Quintessential Proffreading Primer.......2001-01-25
If you are thinking of learning to proofread, do editorial work or any kind of proofing of copy this is the book to learn it with.
Systematically set up as both text and workbook the nearly 500 pages is chock-a-block with all one needs to know to completely understand and prepare for any proofreading job.
The book has worksheets and quizzes as well as a clean style of writing that engages the reader without puzzling the newcomer.
I worked a summer as a proofreader, thrown into the deep end with multi-language proofing work. I bought this book and it proved to be a life saver. I learned m-space from n-space and all the intricacies in between.
This is _the_ book to learn proofreading!
A Refreshing and Concise Workbook for Aspiring Proofreaders.......1997-11-26
Whether learning the trade or refreshing rusty skills, Mark My Words is the most welcome and informative proofreading workbook I have found. Content is introduced in a practical step-by-step manner. Discussion of topics progresses logically from a beginner's level i.e. learning of the 'dele' mark on through to more intermediate levels such as page layout editing. Many features of this text/workbook set it above the rest of the proofreading guides. Exercises along with their answer keys accompany each skill-builder. Helpful hints are arranged in keys; sections of chapters on devoted to subjects such as what to query, tricks of the trade, and guidelines for what to proof in each successive pass of one's editing. For exercises comparing dead copy to live, Mark My Words has even perforated pages for removal and, hence, easy comparison reading! Mark My Words is also a wonderfully clear and concise reference book. I have found it is much faster to seek an answer to a proofreading question with Peggy Smith's work than with any of the others in my collection...and there are several. I recommend this book whole-heartedly!

Book Description
More than a modern-day success story, Joseph Eichler changed the face of American architecture by creating the ultimate, affordable family home. Now, nearly 50 years after the phenomenon of the Eichler home, once a quintessential symbol of the American Dream, this beautifully illustrated volume chronicles both the success and ultimate demise of a legendary company. With over 100 full-color photographs of the homes' various models, as well as an introduction by architectural expert Sally B. Woodbridge and an essay by Eichler's son Ned, Eichler Homes tells the poignant story of a unique post-war business, and of a singular vision and unforgettable legacy that continue to inspire architects and designers around the world.
Customer Reviews:
Eichler Style is Classic.......2007-04-11
I have been looking for as much information as I can on Eichler houses and this was a real find. It not only provided me the fundamental information I had been searching for but surprised me with wonderful photos, including the very house that I want to build. The only problem I have now is trying to find contractor willing to provide a contemporary interpretation.
Very Good.......2006-12-07
This is the first book on Eichler, and it does an admirable job of getting the topic out there. The good part is that there are plenty of color photos and the book is very well desgined. The not-so-good part is that many of the homes pictured are remodeled and don't truly represent the original designs. The text is by 4 different authors and doesn't hold together well as a complete narrative. Still, if you are relatively new to Eichler this is a nice browsing book that will give you plenty of visual stimulation. For the definitive historical tome on the Eichler story, get "Eichler: Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream" by Adamson which is more complete and scholarly but not as visual and colorful. The two books actually make a good set and give you both sides of the story. In all, this is a very good book about beautiful and innovative homes by an important midcentury homebuilder and businessman.
A great book that, like Eichler homes, will never go out of style. .......2006-02-24
As a fan of Mid-century modern and Eichler homes,I loved the many photographs in this book.I believe this book would be a good reference for anyone who owns an Eichler home or someone who wants to achieve a modern look in or outside their home.
Simplistic, self-serving and not very good.......2005-10-22
Being a real fan of the "Eichler Home" architectural style, I was excited to recive this book. After a quick read, I felt that it was a waste of time and money.
First, the narrator (who is Mr. Eichler's son) skims over the architectural concepts that embody the Eichler Home concept. And this from an architect! The design elements of the home are covered so quickly, with practically no details, that this book will be useless to anybody wanting to use this as a teaching aid, reference text, or just to get a better appreciation of how these homes were designed.
The author also spends an inordinate and oddly placed amount of time to describe how magnimonius Mr. Eichler was to sell homes to African Americans, unlike the trend at the time. Unfortunately the author's claims are not borne out by my personal experience in looking through the housing covenants of an Eichler Home in Mountain View that date to the early 60's, which specifically stated that the home would not be sold to people of colour. Nice retrospective attempt at social equality, but the treatement of that sad portion of America's history is treated in a white-washed derisitory fashion by the author.
And the book ends with a weird comparison of Mr. Eichler to other property development tycoons, including Donald Trump, with the conclusion that the brave Mr. Eichler rose above the greed and vanity of the rest.
This is a simplistic, self-serving, useless book. Look elsewhere.
The photography and interior shots are good.
I never get tired of this book........2001-10-15
I agree with the other reviewers' comments about the excellence of the Eichler homes and this book. I have many design books, but I keep coming back to this one and never tire of the clean, modern--but not cold--design. I wish Ditto, et al. would produce a video on the subject.
