5 out of 5 stars An essential guide for every not-for-profit.......2002-01-17

I was extremely impressed with the content and format! I have read other fundraising books and found the ten steps to be one of the best, a necessary guide for anyone involved in a not-for-profit organization's operations. It concisely captures the necessary fundamentals involved in successfully empowering an organization. The CD-ROM was a great bonus and it was quite easy to manuever through the comprehensive worksheets and exercises - I especially liked "Evaluating your Executive Director" and the other assessment tools. I highly recommend this guide!

Business guru Tom Peters has been recognized for his originality and perception since coauthoring one of the most influential management books of all time: 1982's In Search of Excellence. Now, in his seventh work, The Circle of Innovation: You Can't Shrink Your Way to Greatness, he presents a provocative new vision for prospering in the "permanent state of flux" ruling today's business world. By juxtaposing short text passages and bold graphic images, Peters simply but passionately offers his prescription--perpetual innovation--in a nontraditional manner intended to foster individual interpretation. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

In 1982, business guru Tom Peters co-authored In Search of Excellence, one of the most influential business guides of all time. More recently, through 400 seminars in 47 states and 22 countries, Peters reexamined, refined and reinvented his views on innovation--the #1 survival strategy, he asserts, for businesses of the next millennium.

The Circle of Innovation brings these seminars--and Peters' contagious passion--to the reader in a landmark book. Through bold graphics, astounding facts and figures, and quotes whose sources range from Émile Zola to Steve Jobs, Peters blows the lid off accepted management styles. Here is a book that will open your eyes to new ways of envisioning the challenges of today's world. Here, too, is a practical guide that will teach you how to:

- reverse the rising tide of product and service "commoditization" and foster uniqueness
- capitalize on the skyrocketing purchasing power of women
- convert sluggish staff into vital centers of intellectual capital accumulation
- build systems of elegance and beauty
- liberate your creativity and individual leadership style

Whether you manage a six-person department or a 60,000-body behemoth, The Circle of Innovation  empowers you to transform your organization, your career, yourself. Inspiring, timely, this blueprint for success is pure Peters--a handbook as energetic as it is profound.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Innovative!.......2006-06-02

Tom Peters does not only preach innovation, he lives it. This book is a prime example... its unique style and content make it a fast read, but the ideas presented stimulate many fresh thoughts that keep you thinking long after you finished reading the book.

Definitely worth reading...

4 out of 5 stars Provokes you into thinking differently.......2005-10-06

From the first page of the book 'till the last, you'll realize that Tom Peters (In Search of Excellence) is making you think differently. Pages are printed sideways, then normally, with extremely large type, then small type. Interspersed are ideas and facts that are thought provoking and sometimes, eye-opening. That's the point. Most of the ideas are applicable to building any type of successful business.

5 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyable.......2005-09-11

WARNING! This book is not for the die hard, stuffy, stereotypical management theorist. It is a innovative and easy to read look into the world of management "Tom Peters" style. What has now become a trade-mark writing style Peters uses a very personal style to get across some sensational ideas.

Even though it was written pre-dotcom bust AND it is almost 6 years old, a lot of the ideas are still very relevant.

Short, punchy and still very enlightening!

5 out of 5 stars WOW is right!!!.......2005-06-27

This outstanding book will either inspire you to try and fix your broken company management, or make you mad at the state of affairs at your company (or both). It is filled with examples of how things should be done, and most are applicable to any work environment. Everybody loves the Ritz-Carlton empowered maids story.

5 out of 5 stars Entrepreneurs --wake up & THINK.......2005-04-08

Peters is definitely one of my favorite authors. His insights on innovation offer me constant inspiration as I write my own newsletter - titled Byvation, which means ... By Way of Innovation.

In a dramatic opening, Tom Peters says it's all about "I-N-N-O-V-A-T-I-O-N." Peters is a legendary business guru for good reason, he tells it like it is. In "Circle of Innovation" Peters talks about how our world is now in a constant state of flux, and to prosper businesses must wake up and take action.

A very busy text, "The Circle of Innovation" contains hidden gems at every turn that may very well spell the difference between success and outright failure for your company.

Products and Services are quickly becoming commodities and being in a commodity business is a dangerous place to be. If you are to have any hope of success, you must offer a compelling reason for someone to do business with you and your company.

"The Circle of Innovation" offers tremendous insight on how to create compelling reasons for customers to do business with you. To keep us alert, limber, and ready for action, Peters provokes and cajoles his readers to THINK:

* We Are All Michelangelos: He shows how to transform every jobholder" into a full-fledged businessperson.

* All Value Comes from the Professional Services: Because ... "It all boils down to the expertise of people, masses of them, booking, in some cases, BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in revenues."

* The System is the Solution: How to build great systems - which go far beyond nuts and bolts.

* Create Waves of Lust: Quality is no longer an automatic advantage.

* Little Things Are the Only Things. As the Blight of Sameness encroaches on market after market, design is often the best tool for sustainable differentiation.

All in all, a great book that will make you question much of what you do. In doing so, you will create a much more powerful and long-lasting company.

        Book Description

Brassica crop species and their allies ( Raphanus, Sinapis, Eruca, etc.) are important sources of edible roots, stems, leaves, buds and inflorescences, as well as of edible or industrial oils, condiments and forage. Many well known names of plants or plant products, such as kale, cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kohl-rabi, Chinese cabbage, turnip, rape, rutabaga, swede, colza or rapeseed, canola, mustard, rocket, etc. are directly associated to this botanical group.
The scientific interest for this botanical group has run parallel to its economical importance, and research achievements in our days would have certainly appeared unimaginable only two decades ago. As the end of the millenium approaches, entirely new fields (transformation, somatic fusion, etc.) have been added to the classical ones. Thus, nobody can doubt the opportuneness of this book, which combines and presents both the basic and applied biological aspects of the Brassica species.

I fount this a very well Illustrated book, the pictures are incredible, and I liked the way to find the tracks they are located int the top corner of the book so when you move quickly among pages you can easily find any track...

Considering that this is a pocket guide, it is very complete, I found it very well for beginners, because it is not complicated to locate and identify tracks.

                Book Description

Animal Tracks and Signs was first published in English in the 1970s, and immediately established itself as an all-time classic. Totally unique in its accessible, down-to-earth approach and detailed coverage of more than 200 creatures, it is the only book in print that enables readers to determine which animals have passed through the countryside by examining the traces they have left behind, opening up a captivating new world that might otherwise remain unseen. Whether following footprints in mud, sand, or snow; feeding marks on cones, nuts, trees, and animal remains; homes and hiding places above and below ground; or feathers, pellets, and droppings, readers are taught how to identify the bird or mammal that has been before them, aided by hundreds of beautiful, informative colour photographs, line drawings, and diagrams, and clear descriptions of the anatomy, behaviour, movement patterns, and habitat of different species. Quick-reference plate sections compare actual-size prints, pellets, and droppings for fast identification on the move, covering such diverse wildlife as the shrew, hedgehog, fox, elk, and bear; the sparrow, kestrel, and eagle owl. This new reissued edition includes a new Foreword by Ray Mears, who has found this book to be an invaluable point of reference throughout his career, and recommends it to students on his Bushcraft and Survival courses.

Anglers around the world are discovering the phenomenal fishery of Argentina. The author of Argentine Trout Fishing has been traveling to South America on a regular basis since the early 1960s and presents his knowledge of the country, its waters, and the formidable salmonids that thrive in those waters to the fly-fisher who enjoys wetting a line in an exotic locale. The where, when, and how are all covered, along with recommended tackle and technique for fishing Argentina. Finally, all this pertinent information is presented in an entertaining, narrative style that delights in Argentinean flora, fauna, geography, and culture as much as the country's excellent fishing.

The Author hasn't updated the guide because he's been dead for 13 years. At the time I'm sure it was excellent, but now it's time has passed. The history of troutfishing hasn't changed, but the rivers have. Some of the places he described as idyllic aren't, some of the rivers he denigrates are fantastic.

Despite having fished in Patagonia for 20 years, I learned more with this book than with all the local (argentine) literature. Essential guide for anybody going to Patagonia for the first time. The history of how trouts were introduced in Argentina is fascinating. Having fished the Malleo, Chimehuin and other fabled rivers myself I think the books reccomendations are dead on. The author should update some of the info.

I hope there are better books out there, because after reading this one, I'm still struggling to put together a classy shower. Many of the ideas seemed silly, and most of the games would make me run as fast as I could away from the shower.

I bought this book with the intention of using it to help plan
my sister's baby shower. With the exception of one or two ideas,
I found the book to be of little use. I would recommend browsing through it at a bookstore (with pen and paper in hand)
or borrowing it from someone and saving the money to use towards
                        the shower you are planning.

There's everything in there from how to make easy invitations and recipes to games to play at the shower. It's very charmingly written, well-organized and makes it so logical and simple to do. This is the only baby shower book you'll ever need to buy. Check out the lists - they're great!

                          Book Description

Book Smart How I Taught My Son to Read before Age Three is a reading program that teaches children how to read by 2 1/2 years old! Where most reading programs are just beginning to think about teaching reading starting between the ages of three to five, this program starts at birth. So our babies are able to enjoy the pursuit of and the fruits of early reading. Reading provides children comfort and joy both with their parents and while playing quietly. As Alden puts it: "Reading is a fun and magical experience that no child should have to be without!"

I am a former kindergarten/1st grade teacher. I started reading to my baby when she was 2 days old! I applaud every parent who wants to share the magic of books with their child. There are lots of great ways to talk about and explore literature together that will help your kid in school later on. That said, I think as parents we need to be very careful to not damage our kids by trying to turn them into superbabies. This is a BIG risk when you start explicitly teaching preschoolers. Even some kindergarteners are not developmentally ready to read independantly. Several countries that wait until later than that have 100% literacy rates and ZERO reading "disabilities." I personally want a creative, happy, self-assured child more than one that is academically advanced at a young age. Academic instruction too young makes your kid adult-dependant for activities and discourages them from taking risks in play and life. It actually makes them LESS likely to want to learn later, and less likely to follow their interests. If this concerns you at all, please check out "Miseducation: Preschoolers at Risk" by David Elkind. A better book for reading with the tiny ones is "Reading With Babies, Toddlers and Twos."

This book contains page after page of the author's eat, sleep, and play schedules. Granted, good nutrition, good sleep habits, and a close emotional bond with the teacher/parent can enhance any learning experience, but do we really need to read page after page of schedules? Who honestly lives like that?

The author didn't breastfeed and anyone who has knows this rigid scheduling wouldn't necessarily work with a nursing infant or child.

Don't waste your money. Instead use your own intuition and knowledge of your child.

By reading Book Smart, I received the insight on how to have the #1 purpose of teaching and interacting be part of my grandchild's lives. Even though the Mother and Father spend the most time with their children, this book is an aid for any small child to communicate, learn, and have purpose to connect with any age.

It is really refreshing to see this book with its Straightfaced, matter of fact observations on kids thought and learning process. The other thing good about it, is that coming from a Mom who spent invaluable time with her son, there is a sense of "Believe-me" that cannot be had from specialists' advice. I think it is this credibility factor that will endear all readers and bring them back for several re-reads.

This step by step, easy to follow guide, is a great resource for any new mother. Keeping a schedule makes transitions much more smooth with my child. The book explains how every day events like going to the supermarket or on a walk can become a learning experience!

Another self-indulgent design monograph (practically everything we have ever designed including the bad stuff) is Stefan Sagmeister's hand-scrawled subtitle for the first book about his work, Made You Look. This, and the book's clear red case and silver-gilded pages, seem contrary to the raw, handwritten style he is known for, already setting us up for a wild and very personal ride through almost the entire corpus of the 39-year-old designer's work. Sagmeister once scratched words into his skin for his own lecture poster at Cranbrook, and this is the book version--sometimes enlightening, sometimes embarrassing, always self-conscious, and ultimately touching. The story is a conversation between Peter Hall's text and Sagmeister's handwritten commentary, a perfect and believable device for an absorbing dialogue. Self-indulgent as Made You Look may be, Sagmeister lays himself open with idealism, irony, and humor, creating one of the most moving books about design. --Juliette Cezzar

                          Book Description

Just as film, art, music and literature have the power to move people, Stefan Sagmeister's innovative work shows that graphic design, too, can cut to the emotional core. His desire is to transform stale thinking--Sagmeister Made You Look will do just that. Fully illustrated, with a red PVC slipcase, this monograph covers twenty years of his graphic design and features images from the studio archive as well as specific influences and reference points for his projects and ideas. Stefan Sagmeister, born in Austria, received his MFA in graphic design from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and, as a Fulbright scholar, a master's degree from the Pratt Institute in New York. Following stints at M&Co. in New York with Tibor Kalman and as creative director at the Hong Kong office of the advertising agency Leo Burnett, Sagmeister formed the New York-based Sagmeister Inc. in 1993. Text by Peter Hall. Designed by Sagmeister Inc., New York.

As far as self indulgent books go, this is a great one. Stefan Sagmeister, the king of all the cool little tricks brings out everything in this book. His work is great, and cover the extent of his student, and profession careers, which is a lot more than you've ever seen. Everything from packaging coat hangers, paper turn tables, and self mutilation. The slip cover alone would sell me on this one, revealing a lot more than meets the eye. This is my favorite book; full of style, wit, and a lot more.

If you have any interest in design, get this book. Page after page reveals Sagmeister's mind bending genius. The Stones' 'Bridges to Babylon' CD is far from his finest, but that's only because he didn't have full control over the project.
