Book Description
Recent, dramatic changes in local and global economies have profoundly affected the lives of millions and have demanded that students of economy rethink their analytical approaches. In The Anthropology of Economy, noted anthropologist Steve Gudeman presents a model and lexicon for thinking about and discussing things economic. This book illustrates that, across cultures, economy can be understood as a combination of both community and market forces. Drawing from the work of anthropologists, as well as that of economists, sociologists, historians, geographers, feminists, and post-Marxists, Gudeman presents an anthropological approach to economy that highlights the centrality of communal processes in the market. His inclusion of over 50 cross-cultural examples from historical and contemporary contexts will clearly demonstrate to readers the significance of this distinctive model.Ultimately, The Anthropology of Economy furnishes readers with a new language for discussing and reconceptualizing vital contemporary issues - including the emergence and distribution of profit, the effects of expanding capital on marginalized people and the environment, and our shifting identities in response to the growth of global markets.

A leading example of Canadian rural history.......2001-08-20
One of the weaknesses of Canadian historiography is the way that history, political science and economics tend to be separated. There is less of the interdisciplinary approach which has done so much to benefit Anglo-American historiography since the sixties. As a consequence much analysis of economics and political science is confined by the abstractions of those disciplines, while much history tends to have a "high politics" or even frankly patriotic character. This has particularly hurt the study of rural history, where most Canadians lived before the second world war. Sylvester's monograph seeks to look more closely at the rural countryside. His book starts off promisingly by noting how American historiography has paid increasing attention to questions of how capitalist the countryside was. Sylvester looks at the francophone community of Montcalm, Manitoba, and he emphasizes that one cannot assume that the Canadian prairie was born capitalist. Instead the limits of rural capitalism persisted well into the twentieth century. He then goes on to helpfully discuss such matters as the demographics of prairie life, the limits of credit and commercial diversification, and how inheritance practices subtly changed as farmers sought to benefit their children while Montcalm society became more commercialized and less egalitarian.
All this is useful, but one wishes for more. There is not the kind of detail one finds in Christopher Clark's The Roots of Rural Capitalism, or Steven Hahn's The Roots of Southern Populism. Whereas class was central to these books, especially Hahn's, class and the details of commercialization are given much less focus. On questions like mutuality and common property there is almost nothing. More could have been said about divisions within the community; Sylvester prefers to concentrate on the family. More could have been said about gender: the most interesting role women play in Sylvester's account is when they inherit as wives. Indeed, there is rather little on capitalism per se, except to say that as long as most people were farmers they were not fully capitalist. A comparative account might lead one to suggest that in many ways 1880 Manitoba was clearly more capitalist that an 1880 Georgia struggling over the legacy of slavery. There is also surprisingly little on politics; there is a brief account of an election squabble in 1878 that led to bloodshed, but there is nothing on Progressivism, or the two party system, and next to nothing about rural registration. There is not much here about conflict at all. Considering that scholars such as Hahn, David Szatmary, Alan Taylor and Charles Sellars have seen "subsistence culture" as crucial to the rise of Jeffersonian and Jacksonian democracy, as well as later protest movements, the absence of such a discussion in Sylvester's account is striking. There are some comments on Catholicism and francophone identity, and there is a brief mention that most farmers did not appreciate the classical pretensions of francophone newspapers editors. There are some tantalizing accounts of francophone reaction to the first and second world wars, which seem to suggest a more national and anti-Petainiste attitude than one might have thought. But usually Catholicism and identity are taken for granted. Rather revealingly, when Sylvester talks about emigration to Winnipeg, he concentrates on the businesses that francophones formed, and not in their roles in unions or political parties. Much of the book is based on court records, and this unfortunately leads to a rather dry tone. Clearly, Canadian rural history is in no danger of running out of questions to answer.

A wonderful resource.......2004-07-15
I have used this book as a text book in many Change Agent classes I have taught and have found it to be a very pragmatic and useful guide. It is a shame that it is out of print now. In fact, the last class I tought, I had to go scrounging around the office to find copies on bookshelves to use. I wish they would republish it.
Based on real experience, not just theories!.......2002-12-18
The list of consequences "when bad things happen to good projects" or What-NOT-To-Do is worth the price of the book. I wish I had read this book before starting my 6+ years as a consultant helping organizations to improve. This book presents most of the lessons that I've learned during those years and gives quite a few additional ideas on organization change.
Don't let the garish cover art distract you. This is a solidly good book, which I regularly recommend to my clients. Of course, I can't vouch for the Price Waterhouse consulting group's ability to get clients to change successfully or whether they even follow their own advice. I just know that I do apply the best ideas in this book (plus some of my own) in my consulting practice.
Outstanding book to help your organization achieve change.......1999-08-30
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Easy to read and it truly made sense. We are just beginning an effort to change our organization and this book has helped us plot our course. I am encouraged that this book will help us achieve positive change for our company and employees.
Excellent! Practical advice, broad scope........1999-02-02
If you're trying to figure out why a project isn't going well, this book just may solve your problem. It takes you through the basics of change mangement, and makes you aware of just what you're dealing with. Good, practical advice that made me wear out a highlighter. When I showed it to other IS people on our Oracle software implementation project, they said "that's us"!!! We didn't realize we were in the middle of a change project - now we can try to take a step back and regroup.

Book Description
This introduction to tropical food science addresses the needs of two groups of people. First, there are those living in the tropics who require a simple introductory text. Food science is perhaps the most important science affecting their lives. The second group consists of students, administrators, and workers in industry and research in temperate zones, who are concerned with food problems but who have no firsthand knowledge of the tropics. The text provides a concise and accessible guide to all the major elements of the subject, including the nutritional value of tropical foodstuffs, its digestion, and the preparation and preservation of food. The author has taken care to avoid the use of jargon and the text is supplemented by many useful and explanatory illustrations.

Heinrich turns nature's complexities into exciting reading.......2000-08-31
I was required to read excerpts from this book for a course I was taking, but found myself reading (even re-reading) the text for pleasure. Though the material may be, at times, a little too technical for the average reader, Heinrich, nonetheless brings the complexities of the natural realm to his readers in such a manner that draws the reader into the excitement of his own research and discoveries. The text is scientific, yet humorous whenever possible, and always insightful. Heinrich is a brilliant biologist with no less skill as a writer.

Mouths and bits.......2000-08-07
I found this book, by way of a quick perusal, to be easy to understand about the use of teeth in telling a horses age. The written contents were easy to comprehend, as opposed to vet books and others that I read through, the depictions clear and concise.
EXACTLY what the average horseperson wants in this type of book. We have an agistment property and are in the business of re-educating horses and selling horses, so this book is a must for us.
We have always used veterinary text, which is rather hard to follow for the layman.

Product Description
This book describes and scientifically documents the multitude of insidious effects of a bit in the horse's mouth. These effects are still widely unknown among horsemen and owners, and range from pain to respiratory and digestive problems, reduced performance and longevity.
A must-read for every horse owner who uses a bit.
Customer Reviews:
If you ride with a bit, you need this book!.......2006-03-24
Dr. Cook piles argument upon argument, all painstakingly supported by research and documentation, until it must become crystal clear to everyone that a bit hurts a horse, period. How far-reaching the consequences of this pain are to mind and body is truly shocking and totally unexpected, but again his findings are well-supported. And the best thing, riding really works so much better without the bit! Tossing the bit was the best thing I ever did. And yes, there are alternatives that work just as well or better for controlling your horse. Go get it!
Sound arguments for not using bits.......2006-02-16
This book provides good technical information on how a bit adversely affects the horse's breathing and swallowing mechanisms as well as damaging the mouth, and a lot more besides.

This was an invaluable aid in our recruitment process. It is a very easy to follow guide for letter writing, organization of schools, and user-friendly in it's entire format. While using this book as a starting place, it was necessary to find additional resources of information. But this was great to get us started.
We have recommended this book to other sports parents, many have found it helpful in a very long, confusing process.
It worked for us!.......2002-10-19
This book helped my son get a partial Div. 1 athletic scholarship. We followed the steps and generated a lot of interest. It was extremely valuable for us.

a few jewels but largely misses the mark.......2006-01-05
Once opened, this book can be read while taking notes in less than an hour. At first, it appears written to the middle school level but eventually introduces concepts to build a scholarship search around. References to add to your knowledge are adequately cited. The simple and sometimes biographical nature of this work doesn't necessarily meet the unique needs of the reader but should spark an idea or two that could make the expense seem minimal down the road. If you can use this book as a jumpstart to your scholarship plan, then it might be worth the read, but if you are looking for a comprehensive guide - skip it - as they too seemed to skip the proofreading!

The Best!.......2007-05-13
All of the Oxford Picture Dictionaries are amazing! I use them with all of my students who come from many foreign countries. This book is the best thing for vocabulary. You can use the book to teach English or Creole by working with a particular topic or the students can easily use the book to learn practical vocabulary for daily interactions. I highly recommend this book!!!!!
Excellent tool for teaching English or just communicating.......2007-03-08
In the process of adopting 4 Haitian children who know little or no English I have been concerned about communicating with them on the most basic level. I also will be homeschooling them and know that there are areas not covered in a regular English/Creole dictionary. When I purchased this dictionary I had hope that it would be helpful. Little did I know how helpful. This dictionary which has pictures to help understand the concept is going to be an excellent tool for the children as well as for me. I use it now to translate letters to and from the children. It is not a program for teaching English but it will be useful everyday to communicate to the children what I need for them to do and to understand them as well.
Nice for learning vocabulary.......2004-05-28
Nice picture dictionary arranged in themes. Meant for Creole speakers learning English, but very helpful for people like me who speak English and are learning Creole. Would be even nicer if the exercises at the bottom of the pages also had the Creole translation as the rest of the items do.

In this fanciful volume, Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.), both analyzes and celebrates New York City. By suggesting the city as the site for an infinite variety of human activities and events--both real and imagined--the essence of the metropolitan lifestyle, its "culture of congestion" and its architecture are revealed in a brilliant new light. "Manhattan," Koolhaas writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta stone . . . occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Filled with fascinating facts, as well as photographs, postcards, maps, watercolors, and drawings, the vibrancy of Koolhaas's poignant exploration of Gotham equals the heady, frenetic energy of the city itself. Anyone who loves New York will want to own this book.
Customer Reviews:
What an interesting philosophical dissertation.......2007-02-05
through the exhaustive historiography of the phases of congestion coney island brought to manhattan, koolhaas provides a rather cynical view of the Grid as being an ulimatley neutral zoning system of constraining ideas that represent the continual decline of a phantastically realistic civilization, represented as mutated symbols of architecture in the "void" of repeated "pregnancies."
it's really well written. funny. uses, like above, a somewhat inefficient vocabulary but remains in the same vein throughout. it is also a graphic design hubris consuming every page, even the left-justified text, showing off koolhaas's interpretation of the importance to combine scholarship and marketing.
buy it. it's a very good book.
Way Too Much To Think About Sometimes.... .......2006-11-09
A very inventive concept of New York's "culture of congestion" and how people are affected by the architecture they create. It is heavily researched and exhaustive, and after pretty much the third page I agreed with his concept of NY being "totally fabricated by man". What could of been a fascinating article becomes a spastic, heavy-handed read with a sledgehammer effect to your brain. (However, for those of us reading it for school, there are plenty of pictures that fill up the almost devastatingly vast 300+pages quickly.) It will scramble your brain with its thousands of nearly bumper-stickerish statements ("It hides life." "The Mountain MUST become architecture.") written with pretentious glee. However, I believe an independent scientific study has concluded that when pretending to read this book on the train people around you will assume your IQ is 40% higher than truth.
Eating oysters with boxing gloves, naked, on the nth floor........2005-05-25
The quote written above is excerpted from Delirious New York. It is a perfect example of the lyrical quality of the writing prevalent throughout this amazing book. Delirious New York is not an objective chronological listing of New York's development, but a collection of manifestos and stories with opinionated perspectives about a city founded on the idea that maximum congestion is a desirable factor. It is informative, funny (the midget firefighters of Coney Island had me laughing aloud for a solid minute or two), twisted, and inspiring.
Rem Koolhaas is edgier and far more interesting literary figure in architecture than say, Le Corbusier. Koolhaas's analytical yet shockingly refreshing writing style is a blessing for architecture, since he stays away from academic incoherent writing style that most architectural historians and architects tend to employ.
Get a copy of this book if eclectic (and at times disturbing) tales of architecture and urban development is something you think you will enjoy.
best koolhaas ever, man.......2004-01-30
koolhaas is a bit over-the-top for me, but this I think is is best work. it's worth checking out if only for the story of coney island. once you get past blisteringly pretentious phrases like "coney island is a fetal manhattan", you'll find it gloriously entertaining as both a narrative and theoretical work.
the culture of congestion.......2002-12-24
This is by far Koolhaas's most accessible work, as it is rooted so clearly in detail from the city's past. Further, the book is simply brilliant. His take on urban history is to Jane Jacobs what Socrates is to common sense. New York is a special case of modernism that sprang from a special constellation of poltiical and technological forces that collectively create a cultural "big-bang" at the turn of the century. Read it. Blow your mind.
Customer Reviews:

Compelling History of Manhattan.......1998-02-10
A romp through New York's sometimes jaded history with a view to uncover the roots of the modern metropolis and the singular element devised by architects to inspire (amuse?) the masses - the Skyscraper. The book looks at Coney Island as the testing ground of the Skyscaper, Manhatten as further exploration of the Skyscaper which is trialed in the name of symbols of a propserous future, economic rationale and pushing the envelope to its limits and finishes with Office of Metropolitian Architecture's own experimental projects in New York. A very compelling history of a complex city.
