incredibly knowledgeable.......2007-01-05
The uniqueness of this book written by Croteau and Hoynes is above all that they introduce two approaches in understanding the characteristics of modern mass media and the correlations between the media and the social forces including public opinion, commercial, political and cultural conditions. Based on the two different categories - Market and Public sphere - it helps better understand the significant role and effectiveness of media that generate not only the public opinion, but also its influences on the mainstream in politics, business, education, culture and society. These two authors provide profoundly useful and informative resources to grasp the key points of media's role and power in society based on two distinctive perspectives introduced in this book. The main concept of this book is basically about understanding the media and economies in market and public theory and how these two spheres differ from each other in terms of circulation of information and commercial activities. The authors categorize two different approaches in order to effectively analyze the media system and each of these ideas is very well organized and clearly explained along with suitable and apparent examples provided which demonstrate the importance and different evaluation in each concept. Additionally, thanks to the great job that the authors showed in this book, the contents in each chapter are really uncomplicated and even interesting to understand without any confusion. I definitely recommend this book to people who have interest in media especially considered from business and economic views.
In largely jargon-free and accessible terms.......2004-03-04
The expert collaboration of David Croteau (Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richard, Virginia) and William Hoynes (Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Vasser College, Poughkeepsie, New York), The Business Of Media: Corporate Media And The Public Interest is a candid revealing and detailed study of the rapidly evolving media industry, especially in an increasingly media-saturated society. A thoroughly scholarly work which deftly presents its in-depth study in largely jargon-free and accessible terms ideal for the non-specialist general reader, The Business Of Media offers insights and a close scrutiny into what really goes on behind newspaper and broadcast journalism headlines.

Best Ever.......2003-10-09
Rarely are leadership books so practical. Beyond Change Management is chucked full of ideas that you can put to use immediately. Linda and Dean get to the heart of what it takes to make real change happen. They're masters at offering easy to grasp solutions for busy leaders. In this rich book are a million dollars worth of consulting ideas!
This Is The Real Thing . . ........2003-10-07
I've been studying the ground-breaking work of these authors throughout my entire career. My expectations were high . . . and they were met in spades. This is no "airplane" read, it's The Real Thing, a comprehensive field guide for planning & executing transformational change. Packed with Case Study references, Application Tools, powerful Consulting Questions - -everything you need to go about the real work of implementing change. Thank You Ackerman / Anderson !!!
BCM -- how to write 236 pages without saying a word!.......2003-07-14
I chose 1 star only because "0 stars" was not an option. I had to use this book in a Master's course -- therefore, the professor had a captive audience in making his class read this book -- I would not recommend this book to anyone!!
The Ackermans are real heavy in theory and very light in real-world application throughout the text. This book reminds me of authors who recycle information just to get published or justify another addition.
Furthermore, very few orginal ideas are presented in this book. It is mostly borderline plagarism of Situational Leadership and work by Edgar Schein.
I'd get kicked out of school for cheating if I handed in a paper along the lines of this book... in the real-world though, the Ackermans are making money off of it -- go figure!
Chock full of good stuff.......2001-11-22
Every now and then, a book comes along that begs to be read. Beyond Change Management and its companion piece, The Change Leader's Handbook, are two such books. In an easy to read style, the authors, Dean Anderson and Linda Ackerman-Anderson, have wonderfully elucidated the key principles of organizational transformation. Every leader of an organization seeking to transform the context, culture, and quality of their organization need to be familiar with these principles.
Based on my 20 years of experience helping organizations transform, I know first hand that the process of transforming and organization, large or small, is fraught with pitfalls, twists, and turns. Without a roadmap, such an endeaver is often destined to fail. The authors, through these companion pieces of work, provide such a roadmap. Equally as important, they clearly describe the principles of action and thought that underlie this roadmap. All too often, authors give the "how-tos" of change, but do not give ample focus on the mindset needed to effectively lead such a change. Here, in these companion pieces, the authors do both. For this alone, the book is worthy of applause.
And yet, the authors of this book do more. The level of detail provided by these books match the complexity of the change process. Rather than reduce the process to a nifty little model, they have clarified a way of thinking that is complex enough to mirror the difficult challenge of transformation. By providing a clear, intelligent framework of thinking, and map for transformation, the authors have provided a gift to leaders and facilitators, that if followed, will be a crucial support for action. I highly recommend these books.

Book Description
The management of watersheds is one of the most complex tasks that scientists, users and policy makers are confronted with, especially in recent years when freshwater resources have diminished and conflicts on water allocation have increased worldwide. The present book was written as a response to the need for systematic information on management-related aspects of the most important and controversially discussed basin in Mexico: the Lerma-Chapala watershed. Additionally, media exposure on shrinking water levels of Lake Chapala, the largest in Mexico, underlines the urgent need of a multidisciplinary discussion, including social, ecological, economical, technical, and legal aspects.

makes fleeting nuisance of bugs very very interesting.......2006-12-21
In "Bugs in the System", Berenbaum sets out to counter the common perception of bugs as boring and icky. "There is no other life form on the planet," she writes, "whose lives are as inextricably bound up with our own....most people are completely unaware of the extent to which life and culture are shaped by insects." With masterful storytelling and flashes of wry humor, Berenbaum explores the role of insects in the human economy, in the disasters of war, and as the unseen, though vital, architects of our ecosystem.
Tropical ants, for example, sometimes function as the "gardeners" of rainforest canopy biota, where they cultivate and guard the plant species on which they depend from predators and other competitors. Pollination, of course, is the most important contribution of insects to human society. Migratory bee keepers - a huge agricultural industry - follow the seasons to keep their bees busy year round; for a fee, they fertilize fruits, beans and many other staple crops, in addition to producing honey. Without them, countless plant species would fail to reproduce.
Less well known are the roles of termites and other detritivores, Berenbaum writes, "spectacular consumers of dead, decayed, or otherwise seemingly inedible foodstuffs." They help to prevent wood, leaves, and animal products from collecting as toxins in the ecosystem. The introduction of cattle into Australia, for example, disrupted the recycle role of outback dung beetles, who had evolved alongside the marsupials. Soon "cattle dung accumulated at an alarming rate", which spawned huge populations of pest flies and choked the land. Only the introduction of forty-four non-native species - in the Dung Beetle Project - allowed the cattle and dairy industries to thrive in Australia.
Unfortunately, Berenbaum says, insects are perhaps also man's worst enemy. Many insect parasites have developed clever survival tactics. Lice and fleas, for example, have unusually tough exoskeletons, and are often flat, almost two dimensional; this way, they can withstand our efforts to crush them. To anchor themselves on the skin of their hosts, they have backward-pointing spines, which are surprisingly resilient barbs. On the other hand, mosquitoes and horse flies are extremely nimble navigators, expert at frustrating our slapping hands.
As the vectors of disease, parasitic insects have had an enormous impact on human history, which Berenbaum chronicles in fascinating detail. In the Fourteenth Century, the flea-borne pneumonic plague decimated Medieval Europe, eventually killing a third of the population. Because the supply of labor fell so low, Aristocratic landowners were forced to pay higher wages and grant other concessions to serfs and laborers; they never fully recovered their power. Labor, it seems, owes one of its great early victories to bugs. During times of war, concentrated groups of soldiers became an ideal breeding grounds for lice, the notorious carriers of typhus. Napoleon lost over 300,000 troops to typhus, Berenbaum reports, a decisive setback in his Russian campaign; similar losses of life, rivalling those from war wounds, occurred during the Crimean War of 1854 and during World War I.
One secret of insect success, according to Berenbaum, is their extraordinary diversity. Because insects breed quickly and prolifically, the natural mutations of successive generations make them into veritable evolution machines. Whatever environmental challenges (or opportunities) they face - cold weather, pesticides like DDT, or the sudden scarcity of traditional food sources - insects eventually find a way to survive and thrive. While their vertebrate competitors, including humans, can take decades or centuries to evolve genetically, insects can adapt in only months, perhaps even days. As supremely imaginative survivors, it is the insects who may one day inherit the Earth.
Written at about the undergraduate level, "Bugs in the System" is an excellent introduction to the scientific study of insects. Berenbaum spins countless tales of insect esoterica, from the artful description of insect genitalia - a tool to distinguish related species - to the many fruitless attempts to develop effective, though environmentally safe pesticides. She also explores the history of human perceptions and uses of insects, including a lengthy treatise on the varieties of gourmet bug dishes.
While Berenbaum is a talented writer and competent scientist, she rarely ventures to the frontiers of her field. I frequently found myself hungering for more detail, and hoped to discover some provocative thesis behind her stories. Instead, she chose to ignore the new theories on collective intelligence - the "hive mind" - of insect societies that computer scientists and complexity theorists are developing, or the impact of the gaia hypothesis on the study of insect ecology.
Recommended.
Goodness.......2006-02-21
The product arrived on time and it was exactly what I ordered. It was also for a very good price. It was in perfect condition.
Great Source of Insect Facts.......2003-07-20
This book is the best source of insect trivia that I have ever seen! I have used it as a source for questions for the Entomological Society of America Linnaean Games for several years, while I served on one of the ESA branch Linnaean Games committees. It is simply great!
May Berenbaum has a very informal and humorous style that appeals to both the public and students. If, after reading her book, you still think insects are icky or uninteresting you are certainly made of stone. The number of little known facts in this book is simply huge. If you use just one book for reference on insects, Dr. Berenbaum's book would be a very good candidate. She treats everything from the invasion of the cotton boll weevil and the mysterious extinction of the Rocky Mountain locust to insects in movies and as human food.
If you do not like insects or are afraid of them, you really should read this book. It will go a long way toward desensitizing you and make you fascinated with insects instead.
I recommend this book highly to everybody from elementary school to retirement.
I Didn't Know That.......2000-12-19
So you've been asked to make a presentation on pest control to your local school,Elk Lodge , or Chamber of Commerce. You want to make a good knowledgeable presentation but where can you go to get good yet digestible information with a bit of humor? I recommend "Bugs In The System" from Perseus Publishing by May R. Berenbaum. This book time and time again has proved an invaluable resource for many projects. May Berenbaum is head of the Entomology Department at the University of Illinois so the scientific aspects are quite sound. What makes this book unique is the portrayal of various insects and their march through time along with us. Classification or "A Rose-chaffer by any other name...." is the first chapter which is then followed by sex , bugs and rock and roll. Each chapter is scientifically accurate but is written with the intelligent general populace in mind. The book is further enlivened with insect quotes , such as "More courtship lives in carrion flies than Romeo" William Shakespeare Romeo & Juliet and interesting as well as humorous photos. As the book progresses the chapters on Parasites and Hosts as well as History of Pest Control offer a real sense of purpose and perspective to our mission in the management of those insects which society has deemed pests. On insects such as mosquitoes a wonderful historical perspective is given on these vectors effect on history and disease. On the other hand we are reminded of the majesty and importance of insects throughout the book especially in the final chapters , Appreciating Insects and Equal Time. Upon concluding the book one truly gains some insight into the various systems that make up our environment as well as the evolution of knowledge in the field of Entomology and Pest Control. The book is excellently laid out in terms of progression from biology to human interaction to pest potential finally concluding with a sound and ecologically balanced view. Each chapter carries plenty of references and the appendix is an excellent key to insect orders. As a resource as well as a requirement I heartily recommend this book.
Fantastic bug book w/ bit of humor.......1998-06-19
This book was so good! It provided me with everything I wanted to know about the insect world. It also included some humor (i.e. Reproduction chaper intitled "Sex, Bugs, and Rock & Roll). I recommend this to everyone who wants to know about how precious insects are to our life.

Customer Reviews:
This is "the " book on box turtles!.......2007-07-12
As the education coordinator for our state's natural heritage program, when we begin developing a "citizen science" survey for box turtles, this was book that guided us. I have worked with interpretation programs for native animals for almost 25 years, and this is the best book I have ever used for detailed natural history about a particular animal. Dodd combines very solid science with a humanistic and practical approach. His text is very readable and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the turtles -- but I caution you -- once you begin reading this, you will quickly understand this is NOT a guide to keeping box turtles as pets, and in fact, Dodd details a variety of reasons why they do NOT MAKE GOOD PETS. PLEASE do NOT REMOVE BOX TURTLES FROM THE WILD! This book will give you guidance as to how to better enjoy the turltes you may see in the wild, and a true appreciation of the species.

The Formula For A Successful Life.......2006-10-14
Although the book Working Out, Working Within: The Tao of Inner Fitness Through Sports and Exercise by authors Jerry Lynch and Chungliang Al Huang is centered in principles aimed for the athlete, it is a book that helps one navigate not only athletics, but is an essential playbook in the game of life.
In it, they define their formula for a successful life. And, trust me on this one, it's not what you may think.
To begin The Way then, it is important to first define what authors Lynch and Al Huang describe as the "physical life." According to them: The physical life is "a sacred path of self-discovery and meditative time to be with yourself." If this sounds like the path you'd like to take - read on!
The Tao teaches us that in many cases to "lose" or to be unsuccessful in any "wordly" endeavor is to make strides ahead. According to Taoists - to detach from outcomes and results is the most important thing one can do in this lifetime. To them, success means we must meditate on our insecurities in effort to find inner peace and then - as authors Lynch and Al Huang say: "learn to yield, flow and blend with external forces through non-resistance." Perhaps I'm mistaken, but the most difficult task for us mere mortals, is learning humility by letting go of the ego associated with "worldly" progress.
How to have external victory in the Taoist sense? In effort to have "inner success" which is the ultimate Taoist quest, is to remember that there is less need for external victory. They believe, when we let go of our own need to win, there is less tension, less anxiety and stress and with a reduction of these pressures we can then achieve the best external result. I tend to agree with them.
Here's why summarized in one of my favorite quotes from the book:
"Success in this life therefore is the luminous reflection of all inner victories you experience... through physical activity it is coming to terms with your inner most self and how it impacts your entire world as you feel it deep within your soul."
In this author's opinion, we could all do worse than to view our "physical path" from a broader scope. Yes, I do believe most humans need a reminder that the true challenge is to work "within," and we could all benefit by doing so. Moreover, Taoists believe, the rewards we experience as a result of our physical life are meant to be personal and private - they are a mere by-products of the greater challenge: to live authentically.
When I fall off my path of spiritual thinking and Taoist action (which I do on a daily basis, I promise you), I continue to revisit The Tao of Inner Fitness. In conclusion, I share with you this quote that has remained faithfully beside me since it's first reading:
"Playing like a winner regardless of outcome is a sure path to winning for a lifetime."
What Excercise and Sports are All About.......2002-03-08
This books is truly outstanding. What it does is to tie sports and excercise into what matters in life: transcending limits, continually growing, becoming everything that you can be, and enjoying the process. The authors argue that you can use your workouts as a means to personal growth and transcendence and that that newfound spiritual power will transfer over into other areas of your life as well. I heartily agree!
The book is about the mind in sports and is applicable to everything in life. It talks about dealing with fear, being compassionate in your "self talk", and the power of beliefs and self concept. The most pervasive concept, however, is the instruction to focus on the process rather than the outcome. The authors continually harp on being in the moment, giving one's best, dealing with inner demons, and just letting the results take care of themselves. What makes you a winner is not the outcome but the effort, perseverance and fortitude that you bring.
This is a book that brings together fitness and excercise with philosophy and personal growth. A great achievement!
...
great book for mind and body..........1999-11-29
A previous reviewer commented that the book was not necessarily Taoist but common sense; I would suggest that much of Taoism is common sense. I am a triathlete and a student of eastern philosophy and I found that this book was great at making me think about applying Taoist and Zen philosophies to improving my athletic performance. I also think that this book is not just applicable to sports but to living in general. The book also supplies various exercises at the end of each chapter to help apply the principles, which I found useful. Some sections are more applicable than others, but that would just depend on the reader more than anything. I also found the discussion of Taoist philosophy at the begining a little bit slow, but that's just me, and it's over quick enough before getting into the good stuff. For the price, this book offers a great deal to athltes of any ability.
Intense focus on attitude and energy........1999-08-04
Great book. I highly recomend it
A useful book, with good insights, but a bit oversimplistic.......1998-07-24
I found that a lot of what this book was saying wasn't necessarily Taoism, but just common sense. For instance, the idea that one must be relaxed in order to perform at peak level isn't an exclusively Taoist concept. Much of the early part of the book is filled with this common sense type of instruction, and I was feeling very frustrated and disappointed. However, I found many passages and examples in the book that were quite insightful and thought-provoking. Lynch and Huang do an excellent job of showing how one's athletic life can be metaphorical of one's everyday life, and how one's everyday life need not be mundane. On the whole, I did not like the format of the book -- too instructional and directional, which I found to be a bit insulting after a while. Ultimately, this book wasn't the type of revelatory breakthrough that the title suggests it is, but it does contain enough depth to be a worthwhile read. Being that we live in a day and age when the spirit of play i! s vanishing from sports and athletic activity in general, this is a book that shows us we can retain the spirit of play in competitive sports without compromising our competitive urge. Also, the book does emphasize the fact that physical activity is necessary to our overall well-being, which is another point that is becoming lost in our modern fast-paced style of living.

Too late.......2007-04-18
I just wish I had found this book when I was a freshman in college.
The most inspired reading on the topic I've encountered.......2007-03-21
I finished this book in one day; it was impossible to put down. After it was over, I felt so uplifted and inspired that that I called a friend on the phone to say that "this is the best book I've ever read!"
I know this sounds over the top. However, I have been a poor to mediocre student for most of my life. Now, I'm desperately devouring every publication on the topic out there to get the kind of grades that will get grad schools' attention.
For someone who is really tired of the grind, or really tired of being a slacker, this is the book to point you in the right direction to turn it all around.
Good Luck!
I DID IT!.......2007-01-09
I never thought that a book could possibly teach me anything I needed to know to excel in college. I thought I had to find out everything on my own but this book allowed me to excel greatly in this past semester in college. My grades raised, i had more fun, and I enjoyed college more because of this book!
Some real gems inside these pages.......2006-09-19
This book is a treasure trove of common sense advice for the college student. If your graduate won't listen to you, buy them the book so they can glean the real gems inside these pages for themselves. If you are a high school student and anxious about college, get a copy and see how success is made. If you are a college student about to tank another semester, grab this to pull yourself out of failure! Not every bit of How to Win will apply to each student, but lots of common sense suggestions are in this book, and even one helpful tip grabbed hold of may be enough to help a student out. Get this for anyone who wants to win at college!
OUTSTANDING!!.......2006-09-09
There are nowadays dozens of books written with the intent on preparing young people for the wonders of life in college or at the university. And although the purchase of any of these would provide an excellent source of advice to success at this level, Cal Newport's collection of 75 tips to excellence stand FAR apart! It is indeed true that many people will not be able to implement every tip into their experience; however, I challenge any college kid to tell me that advice such as "learning to listen" and "caring about your grades, not your GPA" are far too difficult to work into his or her busy schedule. In brief, if you are looking to merely help wear off the shock of transitioning from the environment of family and high school to one of the individual at college, then choose any college book you can find; it's sure to help. However, if you are looking at using these all-too-critical years at the next level to better yourself, then there's no argument: buying HOW TO WIN AT COLLEGE is essential!
