Insightful!.......2004-05-06
Those who extrapolate trends and predict the future say that economic, political and even genetic factors will determine the future of the world. But, in fact, culture makes the world go around, according to Richard D. Lewis, a well-traveled scholar who reflects here on the origins and implications of human cultures. Culture has deep roots in history, religion and language, so it will probably be a more potent factor in shaping the future than many observers grant. Now it is fashionable to say that cultures are coalescing into one global culture. This author strenuously opposes that easy assumption. He also offers a deeper look at Islamic culture in a post-Sept. 11 addendum. Overall, his intriguing arguments might have been much more involving if a good editor had pared away some of his more facile references and observations. At times, the book seems to serve up a tad too many stereotypes and clichés. We also find that it offers some fascinating, thought-provoking suggestions, and recommends it for a rainy weekend at the beach or for airplane reading.

Book Description
Corporate Governance In A Globalising World: Convergence Or Divergence? presents a broad and multi-disciplinary debate on corporate governance systems by integrating academic viewpoints, statistical evidence, as well as field surveys. Based on a large number of publications and studies, the opinions of researchers are grouped into three categories: those that believe in a convergence into the direction of the market-oriented model (with the Anglo-American model as the reference base), those that opt for another type of convergence, namely in the direction of a hybrid corporate governance model (based on cross-reference between different leading governance models), and those that do not believe in global convergence but adhere to diversity of governance models.
To test the validity of these three possible routes for the development of corporate governance systems, the authors approached this question from an objective perspective based on statistical evidence. The governance characteristics examined herein include the role of capital markets, shareholding structures and influence, shareholder rights, the market for corporate control and anti-takeover mechanisms, the board system, disclosure rules and accountability issues.
To complete this statistical analysis the authors include a field survey based on an inquiry with experts from business, academic and public institutions. Questions focus on the future outlook of corporate governance within the European Union, as well as on the role and format of corporate governance codes and recommendations.

Book Description
Industrial Organization: A European Perspective presents a clearly explained and stimulating introduction to the basic theoretical models of industrial economics (including perfect competition, monopoly, Bertrand and Cournot competition) and to the most relevant topics in the field, including collusion, dominance, innovation, and international trade. The book contains up to date and accessible discussions of the determinants of firm structure (asset specificity), innovation, and static market performance. Whilst covering international trade policy and market performance, the book focuses especially on the EU. For instance, the various policy issues raised by collusion and dominant firm behaviour are analysed with particular reference to EU competition policy. There is also substantial discussion of performance in and policy toward imperfectly competitive international markets. The final chapter then looks at market integration in the European Union. The book is accompanied by a website providing case studies, extra information on specific topics, biographical material on economists relevant to the history of the discipline, and an invaluable list of links to other useful sites.

Book Description
It was logical to expect that the European Economic and Monetary Union would lead ineluctably to an autonomous European defense; the very size of the European Union seems to demand it. The EU eventually will reach the point where its economic and demographic weight will far exceed that of the United States. Can it not be expected too that the EU will seek to make this weight felt internationally? Cogan tracks the halting creation of an independent European military structure, a third way between national armies and ATO, since the Iron Curtain's fall. With the Cold War's end and subsequent western engagements in Central and Eastern Europe, it is no longer a question of whether NATO and the EU compare; they now must relate. They have to coordinate their planning and force postures so as to avoid duplication of resources and efforts. Although NATO's integrated command structure theoretically was an anomaly with the end of the Cold War, it nevertheless turned out to be the case in Bosnia, and later Kosovo, that nothing was possible until the Americans intervened. The virtue of integrated command -- American participation and know-how -- was once again seen as crucially important, despite the increasingly anachronistic deficit of sovereignty for Western Europe in defense matters. In the long run, Europe's economic power must be balanced by its military and diplomatic might.

Book Description
Understanding biotic stress and plant yield allows for the practical development of economic decision making, an instrumental part of Integrated Pest Management. And further, the impact of biotic injury on plant yield bears directly on the basic biological questions of population dynamics, life history strategies, community structure, plant-stressor coevolution, and ecosystem nutrient cycling. Biotic Stress and Yield Loss is a comprehensive review of the latest conclusions of yield loss in entomology, weed science, and plant pathology, combining state-of-the-art theory with successful applications. This book is unique in that it is the first to cover all biotic stressors, insects, weeds, and plant pathogens, and their impact on plant yield and fitness. It focuses on current knowledge of yield and fitness loss in both natural and agricultural ecosystems and on a physiologically based approach to provide a common basis for considering and discussing biotic stress. By considering biotic stress within the context of plant ecophysiology, Biotic Stress and Yield Loss attempts to elevate knowledge of biotic stress to the same level as abiotic stress and makes an argument for integrating the two types of stress.

Book Description
From tiny to gigantic, from drab to remarkably beautiful, from harmless to venomous, lizards are spectacular products of natural selection. This book, lavishly illustrated with color photographs, is the first comprehensive reference on lizards around the world. Accessible, scientifically up-to-date, and written with contagious enthusiasm for the subject, Lizards: Windows to the Evolution of Diversity covers species evolution, diversity, ecology, and biology. Eric R. Pianka and Laurie J. Vitt have studied and photographed members of almost all lizard families worldwide, and they bring to the book a deep knowledge based on extensive firsthand experience with the animals in their natural habitats.
Part One explores lizard lifestyles, answering such questions as why lizards are active when they are, why they behave as they do, how they avoid predators, why they eat what they eat, and how they reproduce and socialize. In Part Two the authors take us on a fascinating tour of the world's manifold lizard species, beginning with iguanians, an evolutionary group that includes some of the most bizarre lizards, the true chameleons of Africa and Madagascar. We also meet the glass lizard, able to break its tail into many highly motile pieces to distract a predator from its body; lizards that can run across water; and limbless lizards, such as snakes. Part Three gives an unprecedented global view of evolutionary trends that have shaped present-day lizard communities and considers the impact of humans on their future.
A definitive resource containing many entertaining anecdotes, this magnificent book opens a new window to the natural world and the evolution of life on earth.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderfully comprehensive overview of an amazing group.......2005-02-16
Without a doubt, this book is the most comprehensive overview of lizard evolution and ecology, available on the market today. Pianka & Vitt take readers on a tour through the many aspects of the lacertilian suborder. In the process, they show one how incredibly useful lizards have been for science.
The book is broken up into three sections. The first section gives an overview of lizards in general. It goes over the basic anatomy, and the distinct differences between the three main lizard groups (Iguania, Gekkota & Autarchoglossa). The second section goes more in depth about each major group. It gives a breakdown of all the major families, and even goes so far as to explain the different genera in each. The final section takes the reader through a brief history of the squamata. It explains their evolution throughout the Mesozoic, and ending with a chapter on relationship of lizards with people.
The appendix, at the end, gives a taxonomic summary of all the lizard genera known for each family; along with a total species count. While this is already a bit out of date (sad fate for all published material dealing with taxonomy), it is a nice addition.
The chapter on lizards and humans, has a nice section talking about lizards as pets. In the past, herpetologists have often frowned on the keeping of lizards as pets. Pianka & Vitt considered doing the same. Yet, as they mention: "We would be hypocrites if we did." They realize that most up and coming (and many professional) herpetologists/paleontologists, keep/kept lizards as pets. Herpetoculture is here to stay. As such, it makes more sense to learn the most one can about the animal they intend to keep. Reading words of acceptance from those in the field, is always an encouraging thing to see.
Of course, not everything about the book is perfect. I did have some minor gripes with it.
For starters, I took minor issue with the treatment of the three main lizard groups. In particular, the treatment of Iguanians compared to the scleroglossans. The scleroglossan lizards are often exalted above the iguanians, at the latter's expense. I can understand Pianka & Vitt's reasoning behind this. Scleroglossa make up the majority of living lacertilians, yet remain the least studied group of lizards out there. In that sense, I can't blame the authors for wanting to put more emphasis on this group. I just wish that it didn't appear to be at the expense of the iguanians. It's not done all that often, and it's never intentional, but every once in a while, a comment is made on the archaic nature of iguanians that tends to make them out as sounding inferior.
A neat thing about the second part of the book, is that Pianka & Vitt do explain the meaning behind many of the genus names. Unfortunately, they don't do it for all of them. This wouldn't be so troublesome if it didn't happen so randomly. For instance, in the beginning of the agamid descriptions, a definition for each genus name is given. Yet at, roughly, the last third of the section, the definitions just stop. It remains this way until well into Iguanidae (a quick blurb at Leiocephalinae) before disappearing again. Gekkotans get a brief, but acute, set of definitions (done as an example of how many are named after their toes), with some other definitions sprinkled in throughout the rest of the chapter. It continues like this throughout the rest of this section. As such, it leaves readers such as myself (who enjoy the meanings behind the names) left wanting more.
Finally, the last real gripe I have about the book is in respect to the trend, in recent years, to apply cladistic methods to classification. Throughout the book, mentions are made on the monophyly of one group vs. the paraphyly of another. That in itself, is not bad, but when it interferes with classification, it becomes an annoyance. One area in particular, is the way in which snakes are handled. The group, itself, is descended from a lizard ancestor. Yet, snakes are still classified as a separate collection of squamates; which is fine (the same happens with mammals and therapsids, among other examples). My problem with the book, is that the authors feel this need to mention how "snakes are lizards too." It's pounded into one's head at the beginning, and towards the end of the book. Yet, the snakes themselves, are hardly ever mentioned. There is no section of the various families of snakes out there. Nor any real mention of their various life histories. So, I'm left wondering: Why bother mentioning the "snakes are lizards too" bit? If one is going to insist of abiding by the cladistic paradigm in classification, then one should follow through with it.
With that said, please keep in mind that I do consider all of these to be minor gripes. The book is still a must read for anyone with more than just a passing interest in this amazing group of animals, and the author's chilling take on the status of our planet (last section of the final chapter) is another must read for any young biologist, preparing to enter the field.
Highly recommended.
Pianka and Vitt's "Lizards" a remarkable contribution.......2004-02-26
This book is truly amazing! As a scientist, I have read hundreds of works, but never have I encountered a better combination of scientific rigor coupled with what one might call, popular appeal. The authors have basically provided the contribution of record on lizard biology, while simulataneously producing one of the most interesting coffee table "thumb-throughs" that one could imagine. First the biological rigor. Pianka and Vitt break the book into three sections, very appropriately I believe, beginning with lizard behavior--evolution, life history, context. These seven chapters lead naturally to a second section, six chapters devoted to lizard diversity. Not anatomical or taxonomical hell at all, but brilliantly protrayed, ecologically situated depiction of form and function, from iguanas to dragons. The third section ties together the ethology, the diversity of genera, as a well articulated synthesis. In so doing in this concluding synthesis, the authors have managed to write a tutorial that is extremely valuable as a stand alone study plan for teaching evolution and biology to students of just about any level of sophistication. Yes, the book provides comprehensive documentation, references, and taxonomic details--it is a remarkable scientific work. But it is one that can't be put down--the authors even share their personal histories of interest, and they embed numberous "so what? boxes". I found the professional quality photo's to merit review themselves as a contribution to photography. In fact, after walking through the habitat-borne illustrations, I felt that I had spent an eye-opening day with these creatures. "Lizards: Windows to the Evolution of Diversity" is a must for biologists, and a gotta have for anyone interested in creatures. Harry Greene's foreward claim that the book is "a survey of unprecedented depth and breadth" is classic understatement.

Book Description
Track of the Grizzly is the culmination of one of the most ambitious wildlife studies ever undertaken - the Craighead field study of the grizzly bear, carried out in Yellowstone National Park and the huge ecosystem, spanning three states, in which it lies. Over a period of thirteen years, beginning in 1959, Frank Craighead, his brother John, and their colleagues used sophisticated scientific techniques to track hundreds of grizzlies, to discover the bears' social organization and seasonal movements, their breeding and feeding habits, and their life spans. This fascinating book illuminates the shortcomings of America's current system of wildlife management and provides an intimate, detailed, and definitive portrait of the greatest carnivore in our hemisphere.
Customer Reviews:
Track of the Grizzly.......2006-11-11
A very readable, enjoyable book. It was published in 1979 so I'm sure there's more and newer information on the bears, but this is a great starting place. It's author (and his brother) are famous for their early grizzly studies.
Track of the Grizzly.......2003-06-30
A shortened and less scientific version of the Craighead's classic study of the Yellowstone grizzlies. For any one who wants to know more about grizzlies, this book is a must!!!!
The REAL story of Grizzly Bears.......2000-08-15
A very well written and entertaining book about the Criaghead's multi year study of the Grizzly Bears of the Yellowstone Eco system. The book while written by a Biologist, is very entertaining and an easy (light) read....not a scientific paper.
If you want to understand what Grizzly Bears are REALLY like, and want to understand this interesting animal- this is your book.
It's a great book to read if you visit the Yellowstone area and are somewhat "Bear-a-phobic" as a result of the sensational bear attack books. I was reading this book in Yellowstone this summer when I had my 1st bear incident in the 15 years I have been coming to the park. Armed with good information the "incident" became an interesting encounter with another one of YNP's great animals.
This is a book worth buying and keeping in your library.

Customer Reviews:
Like the stars show, I love this book.......2005-08-24
Derrick Martin runs one of the top custom AR shops in the world. Their rifles are justifiably famous for their accuracy in addition to their function. Derrick lays it all out in this book, none of that inane "proprietary information" crud from him. He knows that good machinist skills lead to good parts and he shows how he does his work in this book.
He details accurizing a stock rifle into a stick fit for serious Service Rifle competition. This is stuff that a lot of unrealistic smiths try to keep under wraps for fear that someone might steal their mojo. I'm certain that Derrick knows full well that Accuracy Speaks' mojo is perfectly safe since it is dependant on AS's skill and attention to detail and not their procedures.
On a side note, Derrick is also a high ranked shooter so he not only knows how to build them but also what is needed of them.
He also includes a very useful section on troubleshooting and tuning the various .22 RF adaptors that are on the market. As finicky as these units are that section alone is worth the price of the book.
If that ain't enough, Derrick and his "amanuensis" Barrett Tillman are very easy to read and consistently amusing. Their irreverant approach to the M14 (and lovers of same) is hilarious.

Book Description
New reading series brings foreign language acquisition into the 21st century
While the world produces more and more reading material each year, from magazines to newspapers to websites, why are most language learners still relying on contrived texts and classic literature for language acquisition? Providing entertaining contemporary texts in the original language, the Better Reading Language series is for those who want to brush up on a foreign language.
With the authentic materials provided in this series, readers will be able to peruse a Latin Grammys write-up in Spanish, a feature on Alain Ducasse's favorite recipes in French, or a review of a Milan fashion show in Italian. Readings on everything from music and sports to cinema and contemporary family life are arranged in increasing difficulty within chapters. Along the way, learners will find instruction and exercises to help develop improved reading speed, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Superb instruction on a much-neglected topic.......2006-02-17
Jean Yates can now count me as a member of her fan club. Her book "Correct Your Spanish Blunders" is one of my most trusted Spanish learning aides, so I was already familiar with her scholarship when I stumbled across "Better Reading Spanish". I bought the book after only a cursory glance, and my initial hunch about its value has proved correct.
A book like this is long overdue. The syllabus of any high-school or college Spanish course is almost guaranteed to state that the goals are to help the student achieve proficiency in speaking, writing AND reading. Yet reading always seems to get the short end of the stick. How is an instructor to know whether students are tracking with the reading material, or pinpoint the source of their reading comprehension deficiencies? Errors in speaking and writing, on the other hand, are obvious, and those two areas usually dominate the coursework and in-class activities. For reading practice, the teacher generally assigns a primary source -- in my experience, either short stories or books -- assuming students will have minimal difficulty reading in a foreign language. But even with the guidance of patient and dedicated instructors, I still agonized over many long reading assignments. If only "Better Reading Spanish" (and its French counterpart) had been around when I was in college!
The most obvious feature of this book is the reading material, all of which was well chosen, IMO. I also found the selections highly engaging. But besides that, the book has a set of detailed and comprehensive self-test exercises after each selection, as well as sidebars on the various Spanish phrasing introduced in the reading. In particular, I liked the infobox describing Spanish's use of the gerund to express continuing action (e.g., va recogiendo, anda silbando, and the "seguir + gerund" I learned long ago).
For me, this book has taken the mystery out of unfamiliar words, idioms and grammatical constructions. It has also helped me discover the pleasure of reading original works without having to consult a dictionary, or worse yet, a translation. So once again I say bravo to Jean Yates, this time for her guidance on reading foreign-language text. A previously overlooked area of instruction now has the definitive self-help guide for mastering this important skill.
This is a great book for an advanced student.......2005-08-22
As the editor suggests, this is not a text for beginning Spanish students. However, as a supplement to a class, it's excellent. Use this when you need a refresher during the summer, or before you delve back in to an intense course.
The great thing is that the readings are so diverse! If you don't like one chapter, the next will surely give you another take on vocabulary, grammar, etc. It is not a textbook - it's a reading book.
Definitely, it's geared toward older students, avid readers. For younger students who want to be able to write out activities or draw in their text-workbooks, try Flip Flop Spanish.
Difficult to understand much of the material.......2003-08-27
I was disappointed in the material. These are not Spanish language stories. They are among other things: a Mexican menu, record labels, recipes, poems, descriptions of Spanish movies, etc. I have far from a good understanding of Spanish. One of the poems made very little sense to me. There also some good reading in the book, ie a short story about the Panama Canal for example.
Spanish Culture Made Interesting.......2002-11-12
Have you ever sat in a classroom learning Spanish with books that bored you? Do you remember reading those terrible passages that taught you nothing and only put you to sleep? Now, you don't need to suffer that unbearable ordeal any longer. With this new book, the author has retold Spanish culture in a new way of teaching. The passages vary and they all contain entertainment and valuable information. Not only do the passages keep you focussed, but you want to go out and buy the books or newspapers or other sources that this author used in creating this text. As I read this book, I am intrigued about the writing style, the exercises, and the selected passages. Out of all the years that I've learned the language using various books, this book has to be the easiest to follow with the most enjoyment. The book is filled with page turners, and the comparison between various cultures reveals more than just the language, literature, and grammar. It reveals another side of the language that most people do not learn in their classes. If I was a department chair for Spanish I would certainly require all the students to buy a copy of this book for educational purposes. I guarantee you that you will not waste your money with such a wonderfully written book. This is a very talented author who will succeed far in her writing endeveurs.

FABULOUS DESIGNER, MAGNIFICIENT WOMAN.......2007-05-27
Ms. Herrera is a delight to read about, a delight to see in photographs, and a delight to have in the fashion world.
A wonderful, gracious designer, well loved and appreciated throughout the fashion industry.
Worth purchasing!!.......2006-03-09
First of all, I have to say, living in China, you are always expecting the worst, but I was so delighted, when I went to the postoffice to pick up my first item from Amazon.com. First of all it came on time and second it was packed perfectly.
The book is more than I expected, very beautiful layout, front- and backpage. You can even remove the cover and then you have a beautiful book. It is very interesting, tells you a lot about her life and the many beautiful pictures gives you a perfect look into her world, and you even get good fashion ideas. This is definately an item to purchase if you like to read about the famous fashinistas. I promise, this book will not dissapoint you.
The always chic Carolina Herrera.......2005-05-07
This book is a beautiful pictoral biography of Carolina Herrera, who's considered one of the most elegant women in the world and a regular on the International Best Dressed lists throughout the 1970s.
Carolina Herrera - wife, mother, friend, designer - exudes a natural warmth that is unmistakably classy. Her inherent gifts for classic chic were nurtured in her rarified position as the beautiful daughter of the Governor of Caracas.
Carolina's collections also define the woman herself: classically chic yet modern, with a refined sophistication that is always feminine and somehow manages to be comfortable as well.
Almost nothing about her designs.......2005-05-02
Potential purchasers of this book should be aware that it has very little about Ms. Herrera's designs. I had hoped it would contain photos of her fashion designs, but the book is mainly a puff piece with glowing comments about Ms. Herrera from her family and friends. There are some interesting photos from her early years, conveying a sense of her evolving style, but overall the book is disappointing. Definitely not an objective review of her career as a designer.
Carolina throughout the years.......2005-01-09
As almost every designer has it own book(s) it was now time for a book by Carolina Herrera. This designer who nobody knows in The Netherlands, perhaps only for her fragrances which are for sale in discount drugstores, has done her best to create this ode to herself. And that is exactly what it is. This book is only filled with pictures of Carolina throughout the years. Her children are also featured on a few pictures in this book. The book itself is beautiful and also the pictures are very nice. Don't get me wrong. But a book about a designer without pictures of models in her designs is just not possible i think. So if you want to buy this book to see an overview of her work don't buy this book! A few pictures in this book are not printed on the paper but inserted loosely so you can easily take them out. This makes it possible to frame them or something else with them. That's really nice. I can't wait for Donatella Versace to publish an ode to herself!!
