Immigration remains an emotional and fiercely debated subject, yet it continues to receive little attention from economists. This book analyzes the economic effects on immigrants who have gone to the US in order to improve their economics lot. The main findings of this book are intended to answer the question - "how many immigrants should the US admit each year?". The general conclusion, based on the auther's various analyses and findings, is: "more than at present, and chosen more for their economic characteristics and less on the basis of family connections."
This book gives the statistical figures about the size and "quality" of the immigration in US. The immigrants has a smaller share of foreign-born persons than countried thought to be. As to the "quality" of immigrants, immigrants tend to arrive in their 20s and 30s. On average, they have as much education as do natives. Compared to natives, the immigrants' rate of participation in the labor force is higher, they save more, they apply more effort during working hours, they more like to start new businesses and to be self-employed, their rate of unemployment is lower, their fertility rate is lower, and they do not have a higher propensity to commit crime.
The presence of more immigrants means that there are more working persons who will think up productivity. Larger population increases productivity. The most powerful argument against admitting immigrants always is that they take away jobs held by natives and increase native unemployment. However, the author of this book disagree with this point. Immigrants not only take jobs, they make jobs indirectly with their spending and directly with starting new business.
I think this book is outdated. It published 6 years ago. The situation may be changed within this 6 years. But, this book did many good economic researches.

As a Change Master, trained to implement change with Jeannene LaMarsh's techniques, I find this book essential to remind me of ideas, concepts, techniques, definitions, tools. It is a good read, but an even better reference book. I love the index and the pages where tools are laid side by side with the reading material showing where they should be used.

Finnaly, a "how to" book written in common sense style. The message of this book is clear, concise, and cogent. Change without proper planning, clear vision, and direct sponsorship is the formula for chaos, at best. This is a work that belongs on the shelf - no, desktop of anyone who is charged with managing people, processes, or the business culture within any corporation. The examples clearly indicate the generic nature of the change elements, regardless of level on a chart or position on the management cascade. I highly recommend this work at both the theoretical level and as a guideline for any business process improvement department.

If you're looking for a synopsis and photographs about the weird/unique things of Austin- you'll find it here- from the Annual Spamarama to eccentric political candidates to the Texas Chili Parlor to Satan's Cheerleaders. To my knowledge, this is the only book on Austin of its kind, and so is an essential resource for those who are thinking about visiting the city or native Austinites who want to learn more about it.

I have experienced a Nyung Na fasting retreat using this book. It was GRUELLING, and afterwards I felt FANTASTIC! The prayers and prostrations along with the fasting is a beautiful ritual that softens the heart. Buddhist ritual all has a subtle purpose and effect on the mind, this one is no exception. This retreat leaves a person feeling cleansed.

This book is not in fact "An Introduction to Plant Biology" by Mauseth, as the heading might suggest, but is merely a kind of glorified notebook for the use of students taking a course for which the Mauseth book is the set text. It is not a textbook on botany.

This book is a must for anyone seriously interested in learning about plants and their relation to the other living kingdoms. It is richly illustrated and covers material clearly and in-depth. I have used the first edition for over eight years as 1) a good read and 2) a reference that continues to inform me as a serious gardener as well as an educated layman. The book emphasizes the evolutionary adaptative aspects of plants to their environment. Starting from the basics of chemistry, it covers plant anatomy, physiology, genetics, and taxonomy. It is a wonderful resource.

Chon-Ji is the first form that many of us must master. Sometimes it is too much to take in and one wishes that they could see the whole thing particularly the places where they have trouble. Jhoon Rhee's book is a big help. It explains the moves and shows them from different angles but more importantly he explains the martial applications. Too many people do not understand this aspects of the hyungs. Remember that you should do each form several hundred times before testing. Jhoon Rhee's series should be in any good TKD library.
First and best ITF forms books.......2000-10-06
Jhoon Rhee's series of hyung books were the first in the U.S. documenting the ITF forms. Except for this first book, these books present two of the forms for each belt up to 1st degree Black Belt. This book uses the rest of the space to demonstrate the basic techniques.
Overall, excellent presentations of these forms, especially the photo sequences that show you the entire form on one page, which is very useful for quickly scanning the form. Also, the author indicates where the kiai should be, which other kata books I've seen neglect to show you.

Easily understood, with pictures from every possible angle, and diagrams as to how you should look between moves allow even my begining students to use it. Very well illustrated book by the father of tae kwon do in the United States. Jhoon Rhee shows why he has been considered the master of this art and a teacher who has been emulated by many from coast to coast and throughout the world. I never thought you could really learn a martial arts form or anything useful about martial arts from a book until this one came along. Wow! Even accomplished students of the martial arts would gain excellent insight into their art by having this book. Newer students will improve their learning and understanding of what they are doing by being able to review this book while they are learning. The only way I can think of improving this book is by getting it autographed by the author.

My first impression was one of disappointment. I had anticipated a book demonstrating the hyung patterns, rather than a book demonstrating the various techniques applied in them.
Once I was over that first batch of disappointment, however, I came to appreciate the book for what it is worth -- a good book on illustrating ITK moves. I liked the way the photographies are handled, with overhead views as well as side-views.
It was not what I was looking for, but a good book never the less. I recommend it.

Bravo to Berlitz for having produced a one-stop comprehensive source of information on the French language. I find Berlitz French Grammar Handbook to be invaluable in its depth, clarity and precision in explaining and deciphering often incredibily difficult concepts in French.
This handbook can be used either as a strict grammar reference or to acquire a general or specific understanding of most aspects of French grammar. It may also be used as one of several means of acquiring a working knowledge of the `syntax' of the language.
Syntax means `word order' or how words fit together to convey meaning. I find the handbook to be quite good at demonstrating common everyday syntax in a simple fashion by means of the direct examples it provides.
Fortunately, this grammar handbook does not assume that you know the meanings of different grammatical terms. It contains abundant explanations for each specific point of French grammar and there are always complete explanations provided for all grammatical terms. The way in which the classic grammatical term and explanation is followed immediately by a practical example of everyday use is one of Berlitz Grammar Handbook's greatest strengths.
Another major plus to this grammar handbook is the huge number of practical and authentic mini-monologues which utilize different points of grammar in actual real-life contexts to illustrate a point of grammar as it's really spoken.
It is obvious that Bertlitz intended this manual for individuals who actually wish to `use' their French in real life situations. The handbook also makes clear which constructions are only for formal and not everyday use.
Overall, I recommend Berlitz French Grammar Handbook as a very good reference guide and learning tool for French. With Berlitz French Grammar Handbook you will be satisfied whether your are a complete novice or a language expert. It literally has something for everyone.

This is a nice compact volume. It's by no means an authoritative or exhaustive reference work, but for a beginner or an intermediate-level student of French, this book serves its purpose as a handy quick reference that covers the essentials of French grammar. It's nothing special, but it's worth having unless you really need something large and technical.

In the 1960s, the American artist Lee Bontecou was heralded as one of the most important young artists of her time. Painstakingly crafted from castoffs--Army surplus and canvas conveyor belts from a neighboring laundry--her wall reliefs evoked a fearsome sci-fi world of black holes and bared teeth, a mysterious doom-filled terrain no one had ever seen before. In the mid-'70s, however, Bontecou disappeared from the art scene, declining to take part in exhibitions. Lee Bontecou: A Retrospective revisits five decades of this extraordinary artist's work. The texts include Elizabeth A.T. Smith's overview of Bontecou's career, Robert Storr's nuanced analysis of the cultural context of the work, Donna De Salvo's remarks about the otherworldly drawings, and a pivotal essay from 1965 by the sculptor Donald Judd. Especially intriguing is Mona Hadler's brief discussion of Bontecou's personal interests (insect life, model airplanes) and political beliefs. No one has much to say about the critically disparaged vacuum-formed plastic sculptures of fish and flowers from the 1970s. But Bontecou's intricate drawings and recent series of suspended sculptures, which Smith describes as "something between a helicopter and an insect," continue to explore a natural realm that combines delicacy and menace. Lee Bontecou, which contains 175 full-color illustrations, accompanies an exhibition of the same title at the UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles through Jan. 11, 2004, which travels to Chicago and New York. --Cathy Curtis

One of the leading female artists of the late 20th century, Lee Bontecou (b. 1931) became widely known for her welded steel sculptures and plastic and epoxy molded assemblages from the 1960s and 1970s. Her powerful and original constructions, which were both critically acclaimed and actively collected, evoked natural phenomena and organic biological life even as they grew more abstract. This monograph-the first extensive analysis of her art-presents some 50 sculptures and more than 100 drawings, including her celebrated early works as well as later pieces that are little known and have never been publicly exhibited or published. Along with four original essays, this volume also includes a reprint of Donald Judd's influential 1965 Arts Magazine article on Bontecou.
At last, through this major survey of her work-which accompanies an exhibition organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and ULCA Hammer Museum-we are able to reevaluate the career of an artist who has become legendary in the art world because of the impact of her striking early work and the enormous influence she continues to have on younger artists.

I just studied both the book and the exhibition in Chicago. The works are wonderful first hand. The book is a nice supplement in some ways, the quality of the prints is good on the surface, and there are some contextual pictures of studio environment etc. But the book is enormously disappointing in one very important way: Most of the photographs of works in the first section are taken from only one angle, head on, and lit evenly so they give *no* idea of the geometry and depth of the works. The actual works have very dramatic physical depth, but the photographs make them look as flat as paintings. It's great that there is at least an inventory presented here, unfortunately, this book missed the rare opportunity to definitively fill the need for a photographic record of Bontecou's major works. It would have been greatly improved with multiple angles or more informative lighting for the works that demand it. You still have to see an exhibition to really have any idea what her works are like.
Regrettably, Amazon guidelines do not allow me to provide the URLs to Bontecou's own press release response to Storr's statements (search for "bontecou" on ereleases.com headlines).
Catalog is a Wonderful Companion to the Exhibition.......2004-03-03
It is difficult to review the exhibition catalog without first taking in the Lee Bontecou survey at one of the museum exhibitions currently traveling the US. Unfortunately the exhibition will travel to only three museums in the three largest cities in the US, yet most of the works come from public and private collections throughout the country. Luckily, readers get to see all of the pieces in a carefully written, scholarly book full of full-color reproductions, several essays about the artist and her process, essays about the artist and surrounding influences from (and in) art history, and a detailed exhibition checklist with thumbnail photos of each work in the full exhibition. There are over 150 works in the traveling exhibition presented in a catalog of 240 pages. The photographs are standard for a catalog presentation but photographs of the sculptural works may not give accurate renderings of scale or detail; once again, this is a catalog and not a coffee table book of a few of the artist's better-known works. For just a few dollars more than the softcover, get the hardbound edition; you will want to keep this book for a lifetime.
