Kuttner presented a well-developed argment for embracing Keynesian full employment policies which, according to Kuttner, would not require a trade-off between equality and efficiency.
Kuttner develops his argument with the most thorough and understandable discussion of the difference in ideologies betwen supply and demand economic theories I've ever read.
Utilizing the foundational principles of supply and demand theories Kuttner goes on to analyze the historic development, practices and effects of differing economic policies in the U.S. Kuttner's analysis describes the descent of Keynesian policies and the ascent of supply-side policies, pinpointing 1978 as the year business interests "...mounted an extensive campaign to convine public opinion that low taxes on the wealthy are the key to broad prosperity." (53) As a result of the effectiveness of this campaign Kuttner contended Ronald Reagan's election and a return to supply-side economic policies were essentially foregone conclusions.
Providing an analysis of supply-side fallacies of capital, savings, debt, housing, taxes and welfare which promote efficiency over equality, Kuttner further contended conservative reliance upon low-wage competition strategies resulted in an aggregate loss of purchasing power in the U.S., further exacerbating the chasm between the rich and poor.
Comparing the economic standing of several countries in the late 1970s and 1980s, Kuttner provided convincing evidence that countries which had national economic policies managing trade, strong labor unions, and progressive tax policies were faring better than the U.S. in the changing economic order.

Excellent primer into re-engineering.......2002-10-24
Over the past few years, re-engineering has gotten a bum rap. At best, it's been trivialized as a Dilbert-ism; at worst, it's a code word for layoffs. But as "The Re-engineering Handbook" shows, re-engineering is a very real -- and very sensible -- tool for evaluating and enhancing workplace productivity and competitiveness.
The book provides a concise overview of business process re-engineering. The exact process that the book uses (Rapid Re) is straightforward and manageable, especially when compared with other approaches such as Six Sigma. And no, the book doesn't simply recommend layoffs (in fact, it emphasizes job reassignment and re-training over wholesale terminations). The book is informative enough so that a workgroup with minimal re-engineering experience could at least get a healthy start into the process without first turning to a pricey consultant, though more background into specific techniques such as project management and process mapping are needed.
Written in the pre-Internet era, parts of the book seem dated. But the core techniques remain sound. "The Re-engineering Handbook" should be at the top of the reading list of anyone who expects to get involved with a re-engineering effort.

Manganelli and Klein posit a process reengineering methodology that they call 'Rapid Re(TM)'. It consists of five phases: Preparation, Identification, Vision, Solution, and Transformation. The book explains each of the five phases and breaks them down into a 54 step action plan. Successfully communicates how their strategy should work and provides a number of concrete tools and examples for implementing this kind of project.
Excellent guide to process reengineering methodology.......1998-10-20
Other books tell you about reengineering and its benefits. Rarely do they tell you how to do it. This book is the exception. Its main focus is the "how". It provides enough details on a reengineering methodology to guide a project. Normally, the only other way to obtain a methodology is from engaging consultants. The methodology discussed in this book is comprehensive and practical. This is a must read for any person involved or going to be involved in business-focused or reengineering projects.

This book is targeted to biologists with limited statistical background and to statisticians and computer scientists interested in being effective collaborators on multi-disciplinary DNA microarray projects. State-of-the-art analysis methods are presented with minimal mathematical notation and a focus on concepts. This book is unique because it is authored by statisticians at the National Cancer Institute who are actively involved in the application of microarray technology.
Many laboratories are not equipped to effectively design and analyze studies that take advantage of the promise of microarrays. Many of the software packages available to biologists were developed without involvement of statisticians experienced in such studies and contain tools that may not be optimal for particular applications. This book provides a sound preparation for designing microarray studies that have clear objectives, and for selecting analysis tools and strategies that provide clear and valid answers. The book offers an in depth understanding of the design and analysis of experiments utilizing microarrays and should benefit scientists regardless of what software packages they prefer. In order to provide all readers with hands on experience in data analysis, it includes an Appendix tutorial on the use of BRB-ArrayTools and step by step analyses of several major datasets using this software which is freely available from the National Cancer Institute for non-commercial use.
The authors are current or former members of the Biometric Research Branch at the National Cancer Institute. They have collaborated on major biomedical studies utilizing microarrays and in the development of statistical methodology for the design and analysis of microarray investigations. Dr. Simon, chief of the branch, is also the architect of BRB-ArrayTools.

A fun kit with a neat book, gameboard, cards, and plastic animals. You have to answer questions on cards about animals to advance in the game and the animals are the game pieces, and you win by collecting the most as you play. It's a fun way to learn. In addition to some of the regular animals, there are some you don't usually see like a meerkat and cheetah.
This kit would be a nice gift for children, is recommended for 5 & up (my 8 1/2 year old loves it) and for teachers.
There are other books in the Groovy Tubes series about horses, dogs, bugs, reptiles, sea creatures, arctic animals, & dinosaurs.

My four year old daughter received this as a present just as she was becoming interested in dinosaurs, and has enjoyed it thoroughly. We've read the book dozens of times, played the game, and she plays with the dinosaur figures all the time. Part of our nightly routine is now asking her the questions on the game cards; she's long since learned all the answers but loves being asked the questions. This makes a great gift, so we are happily buying it for her dinosaur-loving friends.

I bought this book for my 10 year old son. He loves it. It's simple yet informative. It's also very colorful. He loves playing the game, too.

This book should be titled "Chicken Soup for the Elk Hunter". It is folksy and easy to read but light on technical detail. I didn't get very much knowledge from the book although I enjoyed parts of it.
The book is definately not written for bowhunters.

This book should be a part of every Pastor and Teacher's reference , also every home schooled child should have it. These are direct quotes re:God and Country, from all of our past leadership in the USA , no commentaries. We will not find these in our school books. Another good feature is, the whole book is in Alphabetic order by names. This is a great book.
Outstanding Book.......2007-06-14
An outstanding book showing not only that America was founded on Christian principles but these principles applied throughout the decades, only recently being cleaned out of our country.
No, the early federal government didn't proclaim a Christian religion as its national religion. The first amendment forbids the establishment of an official national religion. HOWEVER, quote after quote after quote from the founders of this country and those who followed, including Supreme Court justices, that explicitly state that this is a nation founded on Christian principles and the the government should adhere to these principles for the country to survive.
Some claim that our Founding Fathers were mere deists and didn't subscribe to the Christian religion. There is deception in that thought. While some may not have subscribed to a particular Christian religion, they are united in thought on God as Creator, reliance on God (as stated in the last line of the Declaration of Independence), and living by Christian principles.
As I pointed out above, not only living by Christian principles, and a firm reliance on God, but believing that our government and our country can survive only if these principles are applied. Contrast that to what is happening today.
Even supposed anti-Christians like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin repeatedly made statements along these lines. They were not anti-Christian, as this book shows.
The book is presented in a very easy read format. You can look up quotes by subject or by author. Page after page of footnotes too.
In response to the one star reviewer who claims that the founders were "uniformly hostile" toward Christianity and Trinitarian churches, the Treaty of Paris which officially ended the Revolutionary War gives us proof of their beliefs. It begins in bold letters across the top:
"In The Name Of The Most Holy And Undivided Trinity"

This book shows you that the idea of "separation of church and state" was an after thought of a poorly picked supreme court. The Founding Fathers did not believe in a State run religion, but based our core beliefs on religious doctrine. A great read.

For the last time, America was not founded as a christian nation, the Founders were uniformly hostile either to the christian religion or to the traditional "Trinitarian" churches.
America's secular destiny was and continues to be hijacked by zealots as (or more) dangerous as the religiously motivated terrorists they so often decry. This book is their rallying ground and their manifesto.
I advise every true patriot to go out and buy as many copies as you can reasonably afford.
Then burn them.

Although now out of print and quite difficult to find this book is a rare gem. Beautifully photographed and rich in historical text concerning the Estancia system in general and 20-odd Estancias in particular. The reader is taken on a journey from Argentina's north to the Pampas outisde Buenos Aires, to Patagonia and finally to the Southern most tip where Argentina meets the icey waters of the South Atlantic. Over all a great "Coffee Table" box and a wonderful read too.

Argentina's magnificent estancias--country estates and working ranches--are guardians of the nation's cultural heritage, from its Spanish-colonial beginnings to the romantic legacy of the gaucho, to the contributions of early-twentieth-century naturalists and entrepreneurs who explored the rugged south. With their historical main residences, picturesque grounds, and beautiful collections of artwork and heirlooms, these estates preserve the genteel traditions cultivated by generations of landowning families. Adventurous settlers and Jesuits established the first estancias in the seventeenth century on vast, remote tracts of land ceded by the Spanish crown. Overcoming a harsh climate, solitude, and sporadic clashes with Indians, these missionaries and European immigrants began to raise cattle, sheep, and grain. By the turn of the century, many of their descendants headed important cattle-ranching and agricultural empires and were counted among an international elite of tastemakers, politicians, philanthropists, and art patrons.
In this volume are twenty-two rarely glimpsed estancias, portrayed in rich color photographs with accompanying text that narrates the unique history of each estate and family. The distinctive main houses reflect a wide variety of architectural styles that include criollo (creole) mansions, English castles, Palladian villas, French châteaux, and Spanish palaces. The estates are surrounded by breathtaking terrain ranging form the snow-capped Andes bordering Chile to the golden plains of the pampa in the province of Buenos Aires, and south to the crystal waters of subantarctic Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.
Nearly all these estancias are owned today by descendants of the founding families, and most are published here for the first time. Complementing the photographs are eighteenth and nineteenth-century drawings, portraits, and paintings of life on the estancias, as well as photographs of celebrated guests over the years, including Edward, Prince of Wales (later Duke of Windsor) and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The introduction discusses the early history of the estancias and their pivotal role in Argentine culture, and includes colorful excerpts from the journals of explorers and writers.

Argentina is a fascinating country, a land of intrigue (the Peron years, the lingering mysteries of the Disappearing Ones), a land praised for the beauty of its vast landscapes and waterfalls and seemingly endless ranches where gauchos still stir the imagination, the home of the Tango, the home of the preeminent Teatro Colon, etc. But this book of richly colorful photographs and interesting writing introduces yet another aspect of the country less known - the Great Estancias.
Covering twenty two impressive estates/mansions throughout the land of Argentina author Cesar Aria shares the importance of these disparate estates. Just as the country has always been Euro-centric so are the variations of the homes here rendered. There are recreations of Italian, French and English 'palaces' (they are far too grand to be mere homes!) and the histories of the buildings combined with the histories of the families who created them. But Argentina also celebrates the vast land resources and the great captains of ranching whose country homes are equal in grandeur to the other more traditional 'museums' in the book.
The photography includes not only the facades of the buildings but also the approaches and the grounds and the interiors. The variety is surprising and the quality of the color photography is excellent. For an insider's glimpse into a country of many facets, this beautifully designed and produced book makes a fine addition to the library. Grady Harp, April 07

A gorgeous collection of photographs taken on "estancias" across Argentina's many regions, from its near tropical north, through its flatlands so reminiscent of the American Midwest, to the rugged south with its Alpine highlands. Not only is this book graced by informative text, but it is simply a treasure to gaze at for hours.

Tomas de Elia great photographs capture not only the european architecture of the Argentine houses and gardens but also the romantic atmosphere of the pampas. The book is impeccably designed and lavishly illustrated and allow us to wander into a part of the Argentine private world closed off to all but the most adventurous.

I found this Rizzoli hard bound book a delight to read and look through. The pictures are of outside & inside views including landscapes & gardens. I never knew anything about Argentina before I bought this book. About 22 properties photographed. Text is clear, specific and inviting. Also have FAZENDAS - THE GREAT HOUSES & PLANTATIONS OF BRAZIL which is just as good. If you are a visual person and see a 1,000 things in a photograph, this book is for you. Certainly made me realise that not the great buildings are in Europe or USA.
