Book Description
The Entrepreneurial Journey in Jamaica: When Policies Derail examines the recent crash in the financial sector of the Caribbean through the eyes of one who experienced it head-on: author Dr. Paul Chen-Young. Tracing this autobiographical journey into his professional and business life, Dr. Chen-Young has had an outstanding professional career, which culminated when he established the Eagle Merchant Bank in 1982, a pioneering company that led to the Eagle financial group of companies. This largely successful business venture eventually collapsed in 1997, when a financial crisis hit Jamaica, wiping out virtually all of the domestic financial entities. Dr. Chen-Young takes his readers through Eagle's humble beginnings, its financial heyday, and the company's eventual demise. With expert analysis and first-hand experience, Chen-Young examines the circumstances and the financial policies of the 1990s that led to the financial crisis in Jamaica and its crushing aftermath. He also includes court submissions regarding lawsuits filed against him by government agencies in Jamaica, so that the public can be fully informed of the facts and legal issues surrounding these cases. Chen-Young began his career with the World Bank in 1966, and then moved into senior management positions in Jamaica at the Development Finance Corporation, Lai Corporation, and Workers Savings and Loan Bank. He started his own business in 1975 with an economic and financial consulting firm, Chen-Young Assoc., followed by the stock-broking firm, Paul Chen-Young and Co. Dr. Chen-Young has received many awards for his contribution to Jamaica's development. He has served on numerous public sector boards and is the author of various publications, the latest being With Good Intentions-the Collapse of Jamaica's Domestic Financial Sector (November, 1998), as one of the policy papers on the Americas for the Centre for Strategic International Studies in Washington, D.C. The author can be contacted through his Web site www.pchenyoung-jamaica.com or at the following e-mail address: pchenyoung@bellsouth.net.

An Eye Opener on Jamaica's Frail Economic Model.......2006-11-29
Dr. Paul Chen Young has a brilliant mind! The book is factual and coherently written. Suffice it to say, the information is very educational to me as an economics student who have spent a lot of time doing research and development on caribbean economies! The contents of this book serves as an eye opener to the public at large, in particular - politicians and government leaders on how a frail economic model and poor governance can devastate a country's economy(such as Jamaica). I would strongly recommend this book to students who are concentrating on caribbean economics as well as young entrepreneurs. Well written Dr.PCY and look forward to reading more of your books!!! Book Description
Birds that walk underwater. Slugs that mate while suspended in midair. Frogs who star on Hollywood soundtracks. The Pacific Northwest abounds in natural wonders, and here are field guides as interesting as the world they describe. Filled with both amazing and amusing true-life tales about Northwest plants and animals, this new series of uncommon field guides will appeal to the casual observer and the avid naturalist alike. Each of these illustrated books describes more than sixty plants, animals, and natural phenomena of a particular Northwest habitat. Author Patricia Lichen combines standard field guide information about habitat, appearance, and range with delightful and engaging descriptions of the little-known facts, surprising details, and amusing-- even bizarre-- tidbits rarely found in ordinary field guides. Discover how amazing the Northwest natural world really is with these uncommon field guides.
Customer Reviews:
Uncommonly delightful.......2006-08-13
"Brittle Stars..." was the first of Lichen's "Uncommon Field Guide" series I discovered. They are all uncommonly delightful to poke into. One can read them chapter-by-chapter or just open the book anywhere and delve in. I picked up this one to add to my school's marine biology collection. After scanning it, I bought a second copy for myself. After reading part of it, I ordered the other two books in the series. Recently I showed one of the guides to a friend who is a lifelong outdoorsman. He immediately purchased a set for himself. She gives the reader the sort of understanding about nature one usually only finds in going on a field tour with a great guide. My only complaint is that there is not one of Feltner's lovely detailed illustrations with every single chapter.
This is interesting stuff!! .......2006-07-02
What could have been a very dry, factual book about marine life turned out to be a book filled with interesting info about northwest marine life and a writing style that isn't just data. I bought the book to use with teenagers and, because of their great interest in anything sexual, I told them, tongue in cheek, the first chapter they should read is the one about dragonflies and damsels. LOL It was hilarious. This is the number one book of interest about local marine life as far as I'm concerned.
Truly an Uncommon Field Guide.......2003-11-14
Patricia Lichen's Brittle Stars & Mudbugs truly is an uncommon field guide. Newly relocated to the Pacific Northwest and Puget Sound area I have half-filled a bookshelf with the more traditional field guide. Those, with their high quality photos or detailed drawings, I use to key out the fine distinctions between hard to discern animals and plants.
When I want pure enjoyment exploring Puget Sound's natural environs I bring out Lichen's book. Her conversational writing style and twinkle-in-the-eye wit along with her obvious love for her subject matter breath life into whatever she describes. Linda Feltner's illustrations are ideally suited for this book and enhance the pleasurable reading. As soon as I finish writing this review I am ordering her two other books on the Northwest.
A delightful, personal introduction to the NW shore life.......2002-07-27
This delightful little book is an absolute pleasure to read. It fits nicely in the hand, the pages are easy to read, and the illustrations are gentle and lovingly drawn. The author tells you stories about these animals, plants and algae the way she would if you were walking with her along the beach and came across each specimin. It's not ordered by phylum or habitat, but apparently randomly, which ensures that you won't tire of reading all about fish, but instead will move quickly to birds and seaweed and echinoderms and back.
I live on the beach, and volunteer at the Seattle Aquarium, and these stories help me tell compelling stories to audiences and friends of all ages. They bring the funny objects you see on the beach to life, and make each animal or plant that you see seem a friend, a neighbor, someone whose life you care about. This should slow your steps on the beach, so that you will see the life around you more clearly, and should increase your commitment to conservation and cleanup. It's tough to abuse a neighborhood that you care about, and Patricia and Linda bring these organisms close to you so that you will care about them.
As an earlier reviewer pointed out, this is not a field guide that will help you identify what you see -- it is one that will help you understand what you see, and that's what makes it uncommon and (in my opinion) so very special.
Thanks to the author and illustrator for such a magnificent addition to my library of field guides and books on biology. This one is a treasure.
Field Guides need illustrations for ALL the animals/plants!.......2002-02-12
I bought two of the books in the 3 book series. The writing is excellent, however, what good is a "field guide" if illustrations are not included for all of the featured plants and animals? If the publisher is ever going to consider a new edition, perhaps this could be taken into consideration. I will keep these books, however still look for a "Field Guide" that offers more reference material.

Should be a part of every bodybuilders library........2007-02-05
Although dated this book contains good information and guidelines to advance your training. Every new bodybuilder should study this book!
Informative and Enjoyable Compilation of Ironman Articles.......2006-08-24
I've been reading this Ultimate Bodybuilding Encylopedia for the last few weeks and I find it very useful and motivating.
This is very different than Arnold's encylopedia, not better or worse just different. If you want a systematic and comprehensive guide to bodybuilding exercises and their performance then Arnold's is what I would recommend. Note that (in my opinion), many of the routines are geared more for someone w/ performance enhancing drugs and would severly overtrain most natural bodybuilders. Still, Arnold's book is incredibly comprehensive and has been updated since the original release.
The Ironman encyclopedia is more of a collection of articles from Ironman issues over the years. The great thing about that is you get a variety of points of view and approaches which is excellent.
The price of the book is VERY inexpensive compared to what one would have to pay if you were to buy the same volume of valuable information in magazines.
Personally I'm not a big fan of the overall direction bodybuilding has gone with the extreme juice monsters, but this book has a mix of material that can cater to a natural bodybuilder as well as those into the more extreme aspects of the sport. In addition to the many excellent articles, there are photographs which contain bodybuilders from both "schools" of bodybuilding which is not something you find very often.
I've recently purchased the Ironman Natural Bodybuilding Book which is also excellent for those interested in focusing specifically on a drug free approach (though certainly some of the extreme supplementation used by "natural" bodybuilders almost approaches a middle ground between completely natural and pharmaceuticals).
For me the most important thing has been learning the difference between how to approach training from a natural point of view. I train for health and appearance, but not even remotely with the idea of competition, and it's been great to learn so much about how to workout hard without overtraining, especially for someone drug free like myself.
A lot of attention is paid to the fact that natural bodybuilders/weight trainers really have to learn how NOT to overtrain, something I most definitely did many years ago. I worked out way too much and really hit a wall.
Anyway, the different articles contained in this book has a plethora of interesting information that I think most people interested in pumping iron will find useful and enjoyable to read.
Another thing I really appreciate in the book is the honest discussion of the various drugs being used by non-natural bodybuilders. I especially liked the fact that Ironman had the guts to have interview with the anonymous IFBB Olympia competitor who frankly discusses the insane drug combinations he uses to stay competitive and the dangerous health issues he faces from that use. It's such an over the top interview that it actually had me going "Is this for real?", but most certainly it is. I've talked with several athletes who have used performance enhancing drugs and they suffered greatly from the side effects so this interview rang true to me.
It still amazes me that the IFBB hasn't tried to clean up and legitimize this sport into a sport that people can take seriously. Instead, they've taken a great sport and turned it into a freak show. They've created an environment that is horrific for the athletes, men and woman who should exemplify health and instead exemplify drugs. This Ironman book, while still featuring many "juiced up" bodybuilders, at least doesn't shy away from the truth about these drugs where many other publications have a "don't ask don't tell" approach.
Highly recommended!
Very Resourceful.......2004-07-10
I always rely on this book, scanning over and over certain mass-gaining strategies, like the featured article, "Compound Aftershock", which is an awesome biceps/triceps program that potentially explodes your arms.
This book is awesome because it includes 3 to 5 pages of weightlifting stories from classic natural bodybuilders like Bill Pearl, Larry Scott, Mike Mentzer, Arnold, Tom Platz, and others too. For instance, Tom Platz explains how he made his legs huge and musculur. Also, how Larry made his football-sized biceps grow so huge with his routine. One bodybuilder will tell you that a good triceps exercise for gaining triceps mass is the decline barbell extentions, which is very effective for me when I superset it with dumbell kickbacks. I've never seen this type of growth before.
I've only read half of the book so far and yet I'm gaining mass.
If you have trouble gaining mass, scan over the "Training With A System" section. It makes you see your mistakes with the possibility of overtraining, using too much weight, inefficient diet, or too much strees. This article shows you how to prevent it.
Ironman's section on the mental aspects of training is especially motivating and convincing--making you eager to workout and get huge.
The Nutrition aspect of this book is weak though. One article is about vegetarianism, which I have no clue why they introduced such an inappropriate diet for a bodybuilder. However, they still give a few pages of bodybuilding type diets that you can gain mass upon.
This book will never bore you because I find that I am always reading new ways to build mass from reading this book and that has helped me eliminate worthless workout routines. Anybody who bodybuilds naturally should get this book, as this book unleashes very clever and strategic workout routines. Buy it now and you will become more motivated that ever!
Terrific Paperback Compendium For Workout Enthusiast!.......2004-01-10
Other than regular access to a good gym with all the right equipment and all the necessary nutrition, nothing is so important to the aspiring bodybuilder than information, and everyone from the neophyte to more experienced muscle bombers will find everything they need to grow into the body they dream of in this wonderful bodybuilder's encyclopedia. Culled from a variety of sources from deep within the culture of the west coast bodybuilding havens of Venice Beach and Santa Monica, this compendium of relevant information and sage advice has been produced by veteran bodybuilding coach Peter Sisco, who used extensive interviews with bodybuilding stars and the mounds of information produced by research technicians associated with Ironman magazine, who also produced a wide variety of helpful publications such as this one. You will find everything you need here, from the best way to flare your quadriceps to the best way to widen your shoulders by bombing the lateral heads of the deltoids.
Given all this, the book is both highly informative and quite inspirational, showcasing a number of recent bodybuilding luminaries, using both photographs and drawings to illustrate correct exercise performance, useful training techniques, and the latest in scientific breakthroughs that are on the very cutting edge of what contemporary bodybuilders are using to constantly attempt to get even bigger, stronger, and more striated and cut. Using the treasure-trove of Ironman's photographic archives, Sisco has produced one of the best single volume works covering the waterfront of bodybuilding yet. It compares well to the standard Weider's "Ultimate Bodybuilding", Schwarzenegger's version of the book, and even Bill Pearl's superb "Keys To The Inner Universe". This is a book that works well for the bodybuilding enthusiast wanting or needing a handy reference volume he can throw in his gym bag and read between sets at the local iron dungeon. Enjoy!
Very Good Book.......2001-06-02
This book is a compilation of articles from Ironman Magazine. They've been carefully chosen by the editor, Pete Sisco. The articles on training are the best ones that the magazine has to offer. As with all bodybuilding books, you'll want to pick-and-choose which routines and advice you want to adopt. I thought the book was a 4-Star book rather than a 5-Star book for the following reasons: 1) The section on Nutrition was weak. It didn't really address cutting edge nutrition questions, but focused--unusually, I thought--on variations (e.g., vegetarianism), and 2) it's a 2-color book. This is probably a nit, but the magazine is 4-color, and 4-color photos reproduced as 2-color lose something (especially if they haven't been "color corrected"). But these aren't really slams on the book as a whole...4-Stars is pretty good. The one thing I wanted to say above all else, is that Pete Sisco has done the bodybuilding world a huge service by including the anonymous interview with a "Top Pro" bodybuilder and his use of steroids and other drugs. What an eye-opener. [Good job, Pete.] This chapter will let you see why steroids and other drugs are such a disaster for the long-term health of bodybuilding athletes. I hope younger bodybuilders will read that chapter especially, and make the commitment to train as "naturals". It's a really good book, and you'd do well to have it in your bodybuilding library.

Seeing the cover, I expected that the photos inside would be just as or more erotic. I am also disappointed that the photos are in black and white.
'It's the water...'.......2005-12-07
The old jingle quoted above has gained new pertinence with Fred Goudon's marvelous new collection of photographs of men in their element. Though those who enjoy books on the male physique will find plenty to satisfy here, the real beauty of this book is the thematic manner in which Goudon approaches his concept of the play of water on man and the play of men in the water. With thoughts of our aqueous beginnings in the womb au natural, these well-composed photographs include water as in sea and river and water as in hose and shower. And the spectrum is quite amazing.
Goudon places (or finds!) his physically perfect male models both alone and with partners. His camera is able to define the presence of water on skin as though it were liquid mercury. Whether dousing their bodies with fountains of water or posed languidly in the ripples of sun and water instigated by the model, these are magnificent specimens in states of both innocence and arousal. There may be nothing new to Goudon's technique, but he certainly has captured some fine moments that should satisfy a very large audience! Grady Harp, December 05
