Book Description

Scholars and popular writers have written a great deal about entrepreneurs and the formation of new companies, but they have not succeeded in predicting when and where large numbers of new organizations will emerge. This volume attempts, from the viewpoint of the interdisciplinary field of organization studies, to answer two major questions about entrepreneurship: First, what are the conditions that prompt the founding of large numbers of new organizations or entirely new industries? Second, what are the real and significant effects of such entrepreneurial activities on existing industries, economies, and societies?

The authors emphasize that new organizations do not emerge full blown from the idiosyncratic minds of individual entrepreneurs. Their ideas for new organizations, their ability to acquire capital and other essential resources, and their likelihood of survival as entrepreneurs derive from the contexts in which they live and work. At the same time, new organizations fundamentally and immediately transform their contexts.

The first part of the book explores the mental models that founders of new companies bring with them from previous experiences, the ways in which their ideas come not only from the companies in which they work but from the surrounding organizational communities, and the importance of local and regional dynamics in nurturing innovative communities. Other papers in this section shift perspective from geographic communities to other contexts—the university, the knowledge industry, and the technology cycle.

The second part of the book explores the role of entrepreneurial activity in the transformation of contexts and the evolution of industries, focusing on the processes and tools that entrepreneurs use to legitimate new organizational populations, and the collateral industries and communities that build up around new organizational populations, aiding in the development of new companies.

2 out of 5 stars A dry set of academic papers........2002-11-20

This set of essays attempts to analyze such questions as "what are the conditions, including economic, cultural, and even personal situations and proclivities, that prompt the founding of new organizations", and "what are the real and important outcomes of entrepreneurial activity?"

The book might be of interest to you if you seek this kind of sociological or organization theory analysis, but of little practical use to someone starting or managing a company.

Book Description

Paul Light has captured the spirit of innovation. It is not about spectacular acts by individuals who labor against the odds, but about the hard work of building organizations in which innovation is expected and possible. It is about tilling the soil so that ideas can flourish. Anyone who wants to take their organization forward toward natural innovation should read this book.
--Walter F. Mondale

Any organization can innovate once. The challenge is to innovate twice, thrice, and more?to make innovation a part of daily good practice. This book shows how nonprofit and government organizations can transform the single, occasional act of innovating into an everyday occurrence by forging a culture of natural innovation.

Filled with real success stories and practical lessons learned, Sustaining Innovation offers examples of how organizations can take the first step toward innovativeness, advice on how to survive the inevitable mistakes along the way, and tools for keeping the edge once the journey is complete.

Light also provides a set of simple suggestions for fitting the lessons to the different management pressures facing the government and nonprofit sector. Unlike the private sector, where innovation needs only to be profitable to be worth doing, government and nonprofit innovation must be about doing something worthewhile. It must challenge the prevailingwisdom and advance the public good. Sustaining Innovation gives nonprofit and government managers a coherent, easily understood model for making this kind of innovation a natural reality.

5 out of 5 stars Great case studies; you go Minnesota!.......1999-08-16

Book opens with a Zoo, and I was hooked. I read the book voluntarily for a nonprofit management class, and I truly enjoyed it (which I cannot say for the big ol' Jossey-Bass Handbook and others I was forced to read). If you're familiar with the framework systems of Bolman and Deal, this is written from the Human Resources perspective and shows innovative ways of allowing creativity to enhance the mission of the nonprofit (or government agency) while using great examples based on 26 programs in Minneapolis and surrounding areas of Minnesota. If this interests you, I also suggest "Sacred Hoops" by Phil Jackson, and a book I just ordered called "Hope, Human, and Wild" about the Parana capitol city of Curitiba whose mayor is very into the planning part of Human Resource frame, very systems framed as well. So I give it two thumbs up. Go Light. Stay thin, baby.

    Book Description

This interesting handbook discusses 145 plant viruses in 27 groups and 31 unclassified viruses in naturally infected legumes. The viruses were observed in field infections of 281 species in 64 genera of the Leguminosae. The book presents information regarding resistance sources and resistance-breeding, vectors, seed transmission, and host ranges. Measurements of virus properties are organized in tabular form for particle dimensions, serological relationships, nucleic acid percentages, sedimentation coefficients of particles and nucleic acids, molecular weights of nucleic acids and coat proteins, optical density, and buoyant density. Handbook of Viruses Infecting Legumes is unique in that it relates inclusion cytology to plant virus detection, identification, and classification. Light and electron micrographs illustrate morphology, location, and staining reactions of inclusions. Of the 27 groups that contain viruses infecting legumes in nature, inclusions are diagnostic at the group level in 15 of these groups. Plant breeders, diagnosticians, plant virologists, and students of plant virology will find this an indispensable guide to legume viruses.

    4 out of 5 stars Great help!!.......2006-06-02

I love this work book! I was really helpful come crunch study time for the AP exam. If you use it along with the newest text book edition it will also really help. good simple review for the exam also acts very similar to the actuall AP exam. I also help me in my AP class. If I didnt have time to read a chapter a night, I would read the summary in the work book. And before an exam on mulitple chapters instead of rereading 50+ pages and doing 75 odd questions to study, it was better to go over the summary in this book. then if you dont understand somethign go back to the text book and read that section over. The answers with explanations really help too. Highly reccomend this book for an AP bio class and for the AP bio test. ONly flaw is that doesnt really help if you dotn have the text book to go with it and that doesn't have as many diagrams as it should. OVerall fantastic resource!

      Book Description

Recent advances in vascular biology and vascular engineering have led to the understanding and integration of the two fields. A feature that is fundamental to both is the dynamic aspects of the vascular system. Although the basic principles governing blood flow and the circulatory function are known, new approaches to examining the interaction of different parts of the vascular system have emerged. These include measurement techniques and quantitative methods with greater use of modern technology and computer modeling. An obvious need therefore exists for a book that deals specifically with the dynamics of the vascular system.

This book begins with the historical discoveries of the features of the vascular system and its importance in the overall circulatory function. Modern aspects of vascular biology in terms of structure and function are then described, followed by the introduction of physical principles and basic fluid mechanics for quantitative analysis. The hemodynamics of large arteries, the optimal structure of vascular branching and the pulsatile energy transmission and modeling aspects are elaborated. These are extended to analyze the function of the venous system and the microcirculation. Finally, the integrated vascular system and its response and adaptation to diseased conditions, such as aging, stenosis, hypertension, myocardial ischemia, atheroslerosis and stroke are explained. The overall emphasis is on the dynamic nature of the vascular system.

The kata in this volume are at the advanced level and may be selected for examination above the grade of shodan.

In Unsu, there are constant transformations, signified by the name meaning "Cloud Hands." All parts of the body are used as weapons, with feints and provocations leading to unique combination techniques and multi-directional kicks.

Sochin is characterized by a certain solemnity and imperturbability. Using a very stable stance, muscular power is built up slowly in many movements, instantaneously in others, leading to a keen sense of timing for continuous attacks.

Nijushiho offers training in the unique back-hand block (haishu uke). It requires integration of varying strengths and speed, and mastery can be seen in a smooth and unbroken flow of movements.

2 out of 5 stars This is for fundamental only (black cover).......2004-10-03

upon receiving this book, i was very disappointed because it was for fundamental level only (a black cover). Without the picture nor detailed discription, I bought this book by mistake. This is not what I need/want. I was so upset:( I was expecting an intermediate level of chartbook by Azar.
so customers, be smart. Don't buy this book unless you are expecting a very basic level of grammar chartbook.

      5 out of 5 stars It's a Classic!.......2002-03-13

I've been teaching ESL for 16 years and developmental writing and reading, college level, for 10 years, and I strongly recommend Betty Azar's Chartbook as a reference book. It is written for the ESL audience, but I also use it in my writing instruction for native speakers.

I recommend it highly for ESL speakers who have finished their formal ESL instruction or who are in an advanced level. They should use it the same way they do a dictionary or thesaurus - as a reference book. There are numerous grammar explanations that are easy to understand. Azar provides several lists that students can use as a reference if the grammar rule/pattern is an obscure or difficult one. It has a series of charts for students to visualize the actual time that the different English verb tenses cover. Azar covers a great deal of material, but the book is only 140 pages total - small and thin. That makes it convenient to carry.

I also recommend it highly as a teaching aid when instructing native speakers in reading and writing so that teachers can more fully understand English grammar from the ESL perspective. When I teach developmental writing to college students, I find that I am oftentimes dealing with native speaker dialect issues, so an ESL explanation can be more appropriate. In addition, there are many ESL students in Freshman Composition courses, so the instructor needs to know how to help those students.

The Chartbook is a reference book. If you want the exercises, get the regular text or the workbooks. Azar has been criticized for presenting grammar out of context. I believe that is a valid, although not a shattering, criticism of her main texts. However, this is not supposed to be that sort of book. It is supposed to be a reference book, and the grammar will be out of context.

      I recommend this book unreservedly.

Those of us who love New York tend to love the city passionately, for its past as well as its present. Daniel Okrent's Great Fortune: The Epic of Rockefeller Center is a book for New Yorkers from Ashtabula to Zimbabwe: a study of ambition, audacity, and deal-making on a grand scale that led to the construction of some of the most famous skyscrapers in the world. The cast of characters includes not only the many and diverse members of the Rockefeller family, but other powerful New York institutions such as Columbia University, the Metropolitan Opera, the Museum of Modern Art, and The New York Times--not to mention the radical Mexican artist Diego Rivera, the New Yorker cartoonist William Steig, the Marx Brothers, and a bevy of "Rockettes." Okrent's narrative neatly balances the epic and the intimate; he offers both authoritative pronouncements on modern architecture and reams of good gossip. Like New York itself, Great Fortune contains multitudes: densely packed, it remains surprisingly--and welcomingly--commodious. --Tim Page

        Book Description

In this hugely appealing book, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, acclaimed author and journalist Daniel Okrent weaves together themes of money, politics, art, architecture, business, and society to tell the story of the majestic suite of buildings that came to dominate the heart of midtown Manhattan and with it, for a time, the heart of the world. At the center of Okrent's riveting story are four remarkable individuals—tycoon John D. Rockefeller, his ambitious son Nelson Rockefeller, real estate genius John R. Todd, and visionary skyscraper architect Raymond Hood. In the tradition of David McCullough's The Great Bridge, Ron Chernow's Titan, and Robert Caro's The Power Broker, Great Fortune is a stunning tribute to an American landmark that captures the heart and spirit of New York at its apotheosis.

5 out of 5 stars A Page Turner Full of Fascinating Characters and Stories.......2006-06-15

This lively narrative history is full of fascinating characters and stories. The humbly powerful John D., Jr. (who financed it), the Victorian president of Columbia (who leased the land), Nelson Rockefeller (who took over command of it), and the extraordinary team of builders and architects who designed and built it--they and many others truly come to life. How do you build a vast commercial center in the depths of the Depression? How do you rent out the space? How does it become more than a collection of office buildings and turn in one of the world's great tourist attractions, and a symbol of NYC as the world's modern commercial capital? Okrent tells us with wit, with sympathy and admiration, but without sparing some of the gory details. A great choice for anyone who enjoys reading about business enterprise, architecture and design , the Rockefellers--or about the central character in the tale, the city of New York.

        5 out of 5 stars A great, sweeping saga.......2006-05-04

I read this book just after reading "Higher: A Historic Race to the Sky and the Making of a City," having found them both steeply discounted at a local bookstore.

I love both books and find them a natural pairing.

"Higher" has been ably reviewed by others and I do not feel the need to add to what has been said about that book. However, I do feel compelled to come to the defense of this book.

Mr. Okrent weaves many stories together to tell the tale of Rockefeller Center: those of the Rockefeller family, architect Raymond Hood, impresario and movie theater innovator S. L. "Roxy" Rothafel, as well as a brief history of midtown New York (you might want to have a map handy) and the Depression. There's even a cameo by Diego Rivera.

For anyone interested in architecture, property development, New York, the Depression, the Rockefellers or the building itself, this is great reading. As one seeking entry into architecture, I particularly appreciated the anecdote about an unknown interior designer named Donald Deskey who gambled his life savings, outpitched the better-known designers to win the contract for the Music Hall job.

I had no issue with Okrent's writing. I was a newspaper copy editor for 14 years and can barely pick up a newspaper or listen to an NPR news broadcast without finding some nit to pick. It did take me longer to read "Great Fortune" than it did "Higher," but then the book is twice as long and when I finished, I thought it an even better book. Perhaps it's with the books as it is with the buildings: It's not the height; it's the breadth.

        1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-01-25

I read this book on the basis of a favorable review in the New Yorker. I found, though, that the book was rather dry and predictable. The one star review may seem harsh, but this book simply did not live up to my expectations. Mr. Okrent should probably stick to rotisserie baseball.

        4 out of 5 stars Great reading.......2005-08-24

Great Fortune is a fascinating look at the building of Rockefeller Center and how it was a reflection of the time. Okrent paints a unique picture of the 1930's and the social impact on New York.

4 out of 5 stars Workmanlike Take on Fascinating Subject.......2005-07-06

Okrent's writing isn't up to the standards of his research, but those standards are very, very high indeed. He (or his researchers) have tracked down an enormous number of utterly fascinating facts, placed them in social and historical context and, in essence, have let the story tell itself. The book could have been longer, particularly the last section, which brings the story up to date, though.

        Book Description

Today's retail marketplace is a vast sea of products, services, and wannabe brands. But even the catchiest slogans and biggest selections won't capture the buyer's loyalty if they don't establish a personal "connection." And there's no closer connection than friendship.

Author and entrepreneur Lois K. Geller has found a surefire way to raise your brand above the others. Her philosophy - so simple and yet so powerful - is Friendship Branding. While working with clients such as American Express, Weight Watchers, and Columbia House, Geller found that creating a warm, long-term relationship with customers brought unprecedented sales and long-term brand loyalty. She also discovered that customers prefer the brand that reflects the qualities of a good friend: reliability, humor, honesty, charisma.

Customers for Keeps reveals the eight stages of Friendship Branding that will put your company on your customers' "most wanted" list.
        1. Wear a human face.
        2. Maximize your initial impact.
        3. Bond with customers by establishing mutual needs.
        4. Listen to your customers via new channels.
        5. Win trust by apprising customers of the latest brand developments - good and bad
        6. Set your customers at ease.
        7. Commit to customers.
        8. Sustain your friendships.

Customers for Keeps will show you how to:
-Create and maintain a memorable, effective brand - no matter how large or small the company
-Redefine a brand as an experience, rather than an image
-Relate to customers as one would a best friend, using the principles and "rituals" of friendship
-Inspire trust, respect, and loyalty in customers
-Repair "broken" relationships so that they are stronger than ever
        -And more!

This groundbreaking work tears down the old definition of branding. Instead of simply creating a physical image or mental association of a product or service in the customer's mind, companies can now brand themselves in such a way so they are thought of as trusted friends. Remember, every customer worth getting is worth keeping. Customers for Keeps shows you why a friendship between customer and company is not only preferable in today's marketplace - it's vital.

As a former student in Lois Geller's graduate school course on Direct Marketing I know just how motivating she can be. Now she hits one out of the ballpark with this book. Lord have mercy I could've used this book two years ago when I was working with a major electronics manufacturer and we were planning the roll out of their new handheld organizer. We knew how to market the thing but we couldn't brand it properly. If only Lois offered a course in branding a few years ago! Outstanding book!

            Book Description

Japanese firms have come under close examination by their international counterparts, who seek insight into the sources of Japanese accomplishments. The Japanese Firm reveals the complex network of institutions and practices surrounding the Japanese firm to explain the successes of the Japanese
economy. A team of internationally renowned scholars uses theoretical and empirical work, and combines contributions from the fields of institutional economics, organizational theory, economic history, and sociology to elucidate the distinctive social and economic context of Japanese firms. Through
an analysis of the internal structure of firms, the interdependency of firms and their suppliers, and the effects of relative income and power equality, Aoki and Dore recognize the diversity of experience within Japan and address the transferability or adaptability of the Japanese experience to the
            Nordic or Anglo-American context.

5 out of 5 stars A basic material in the Japanese study.......2003-03-31

This book is one the most cited material in the field of Japanese study. From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, studying the Japanese firms was a fad in social sciences. There was a deluge of papers and books on that subject. It must be the golden age of Japanology. And this book could be regarded as the fruit of such activities.
First, editors themselves are the leading figures in the Japanese study, and articles in this book were written by distinguished scholars too. So you can expect the quality papers.
Second, almost all the issues raised up to that time are tackled in this volume from organizational learning in the Japanese firm, quality control, lean production, Japanese-style R&D, the human resource management in the Japanese firm, to keiretsu.
But just like all other things in the life, this book has its own weaknesses.
First, as you can guess from the publication date of this book (1994) and the subtitle of the book (sources of competitive strength), there is no account of why Japanese firms are mired in difficulties now. Poster children of Japanese business like Nissan, Toshiba, Hitachi all have suffered over the 1990s and now. There is no explanation for such troubles. It's natural for most didn't imagine the Japanese economy has stumble more than a decade up to 1995. They thought downturn caused by bubble bursting should be short-term problem. So we can't pillory authors for this weakness. But now it's the obvious problem.
Second, as we can guess from the name of editor (Aoki), most articles are confined to incentive or contractual approach in dealing with the firm. Some articles adopt the organizational learning approach. Other approaches on organization than contract theory are few in this book. It goes without saying that this problem doesn't stand for the jaundiced eye of the editors. At the time this book was published, other approaches in organizational studies were not fully competitive.
In spite of these two obvious flaws, you'd better read related articles in this book if you are intended to write the paper about the Japanese firm. As I said, articles in this book could be considered as the fruit of pervious studies on the Japanese firm.

            Book Description

Miwa has earned quite a name for himself in Japan for his brilliant but biting iconoclastic views. Now, Western readers will learn what the fuss has been about. Self-styled authorities on the Japanese economy will squirm, for Miwa takes no prisoners; his logic is relentless, merciless and-- inevitably--right.
--J. Mark Ramseyer,University of Chicago Law School

This is a monumental work, demystifying the Japanese economy and contesting the conventional view that `Japan is different.' In doing so, Miwa paves the way for a new era of comparative study.

            --Kazuo KoikeHosei University, Tokyo

The great successes of the Japanese economy have often been attributed to differences in the Japanese economic system. Employing an exhaustive investigation of the roles of the government and banks, firms and networks, and workers and managers, Yoshiro Miwa illustrates that the standard principles of economics explain the dominant patterns of Japanese economic phenomena. Debunking many long-held myths, Miwa deftly propels readers to a fuller, more accurate understanding of the Japanese economy.

5 out of 5 stars Monumental work on Japanese economy.......1998-08-11

Though now there are many books in English on Japanese economy by both academics and practitoners, almost all of them belong to the tradition of Madam Butterfly; these exotic people are, better or worse, different from us. Even Japanese researchers accommodate this long-lasting demand among non-Japanese. However, finally Miwa has shown us a cold fact with convincing evidience: human beings cannot be substantially different in economically important spheres. You are lucky to start with this magnificent work if you are a novice on Japanese economy. Also you need to unlearn Japan-is-different stories to understand the subject if you have already been fascinated by the sophisticated but evidenceless argument of Aoki and his gangs. Must read for those who have more than mininal interest in Japanese society and economy.

                Book Description

Why are most businesses less efficient that they could be? Why do two identical Ford plants in England and Germany, manufacturing identical cars, have vastly different rates of production?

Harvey Leibenstein explores such questions in depth, using ideas and evidence from economics, game theory, psychology, and other disciplines. He observes that employees usually perform best when they work under a moderate amount of pressure – not too little and not too much. But this sort of balanced situation is rare, so most workers in low-pressure situations may shirk their tasks, while those in a stressful environment may cave in.

To avoid this state of affairs, Leibenstein argues, workers tacitly adopt conventions about proper degrees of effort. The history of the firm, the degree of hierarchy, and the nature of the competitive relationships within the firm largely govern these standards, which frequently defy rational considerations. Leibenstein analyzes the structure and functioning of companies with multiple levels of hierarchy, pinpointing sources of inefficiency. He also examines the question of entrepreneurship.

                    Book Description

Long-term, close trading relations based on trust have come to be regarded as a key to the management of buyer-supplier relations in industry, while the arm's length and adversarial commercial bargain has fallen out of favor. This book examines these contrasting approaches, and the link between them and corporate performance, through a study of the electronics industry in Britain and Japan, and offers a unique integration of multi-disciplinary theorizing and original comparative empirical work. It will be of use to those interested in the nature of the firm, and students of comparative economic performance in Japan and Britain.

                      Book Description

The nature of Japanese firms has come under intense scrutiny because of their international success and their distinct structure, employee relations and working practices. This book sheds light on the reasons for promotion within firms, the distribution of power within companies, business management methods and the relationship between shareholders, executives and employees.

The authors use empirical data from comprehensive surveys to support their research on the nature of Japanese business. They survey 1,816 white collar employees in several large corporate enterprises, and 2,246 shareholder-appointed board members in listed corporations. The authors' primary concern is to explain the prerequisites for promotion to middle management and executive positions. Many criteria are analyzed, including the extent of desire for promotion, working style, lifestyle, the effect of university education including the name of the university, the level of education attained, the effect of university education including the name of the university and the degree subject, the economic incentive behind severe competition for promotion and the role of trade unions. The book also deals with issues of corporate governance and the role of the incentive system and examines the popularity of labor managed firms in Japan.

This detailed work will be of great interest to economists, businesspeople and students wanting to learn more about Japanese business.

                        Description:
We examine the determinants and effects of technology acquisition licensing using firm-level data between 1957 and 1970. Our results indicate that in technology acquisition licensing, the government screened a firm's application based on (i) the industry that the firm belonged to and (ii) its past experience of technology acquisition. As a result, inefficient firms with considerable experience tended to acquire more technologies before deregulation. Despite this screening process, the technology acquisition policy contributes to improve a firm performance: The firms with acquired technology succeeded in capital accumulation, which results in much faster growth of labor productivity.

                          Description:
This study investigates the value-added contributions of science parks to new technology-based firms (NTBFs). In particular, we focus on whether on-park NTBFs are likely to establish knowledge linkage, represented as joint research, with local higher education institutes (HEIs). Based on a bivariate probit model, we show that on-park NTBFs exhibit a higher propensity to engage in joint research with research institutes. However, the geographical range of knowledge linkage is not localized as hypothesized. Furthermore, no significant difference was found between science parks and other types of property-based initiatives with regard to the degree of encouragement provided to tenants to establish localized HEI linkage.

                                  Book Description

The new Asian corporation has emerged, and Westerners who currently do business in Asia or contemplate doing so would do well to take heed of the new Asian business model or risk being left behind. Here, author Michael Hamlin takes a close look at the revolutionary new business models Asia's best companies are adopting, the challenges they still face and, most of all, the challenges posed to their Western competitors. From organizational structure to strategy, this book provides in-depth portraits of Asia's leading companies and provides specific strategies Western managers can use to best their Asian competitors or successfully enter the new Asian market.
