The Evolution of the US Airline Industry: Theory, Strategy and Policy (Studies in Industrial Organization)

Book Description
The Evolution of the US Airline Industry discusses the evolution of the hub-and-spoke network system and the associated price discrimination strategy, as the post-deregulation dominant business model of the major incumbent airlines and its breakdown in the early 2000s. It highlights the role that aircraft – as a production input – and the aircraft manufacturers' strategy have played in shaping this dominant business model in the 1990s. Fierce competition between Airbus and Boeing and plummeting new aircraft prices in the early 2000s have fueled low-cost competition of unprecedented scope, that destroyed the old business model. The impact of the manufacturers' strategy on these trends has been overlooked by industry observers, who have traditionally focused on the demand for air travel and labor costs as the most critical elements in future trends and survivability of major network airlines. The book debates the impact and merit of government regulation of the industry. It examines uncertainty, information problems, and interest group structures that have shaped environmental and safety regulations. These regulations disregard market signals and deviate from standard economic principles of social efficiency and public interest. The Evolution of the US Airline Industry also debates the applicability of traditional antitrust analysis and policies, which conflict with the complex dynamics of real-life airline competition. It questions the regulator's ability to interpret industry conduct in real time, let alone predict or change its course towards a "desirable" direction. The competitive response of the low-cost startup airlines surprised many antitrust proponents, who believed the major incumbent airlines practically blocked significant new entry. This creative market response, in fact, destroyed the major incumbents' power to discriminate pricing – a task the antitrust efforts failed to accomplish.

Applying concepts of quantum and chaos thinking to the working world, consultant and educator Danah Zohar's Rewiring the Corporate Brain: Using the New Science to Rethink How We Structure and Lead Organizations offers revolutionary advice for achieving workplace change. Businesses should be operated like brains, she argues, utilizing all of the mental, emotional, and spiritual stimuli at their disposal. Ordinarily, however, most ignore the latter two and rely solely on just one-third of their "corporate brains"--a shortcoming Zohar shows how to correct so that truly effective responses can be crafted for myriad predicaments.Book Description
It is argued that we stand now at the end of the age of enlightenment--the reason-based network of social, political, and business relationships and understandings that have guided the Western world (as well as much of the East) for nearly 400 years. Bestselling author Danah Zohar has her finger on the pulse of this moment in history and brings her extraordinary intelligence to bear on how we are changing, what is required for positive change, and how this change plays a role in the evolution of business, organizations, and management.Corporations have been a world of Newtonian organization, thriving on certainty and predictability. They are hierarchical, with power emanating from the top, and control exercised at every level. Heavily bureaucratic and rule-bound, they are necessarily inflexible and are managed as though the part organizes the whole.
Rewiring the Corporate Brain argues that we are moving away from a Newtonian to a complexity-based system and offers a new conceptual structure for a fundamental transformation in corporate thinking and leadership, together with suggestions for practical, structural implementation. Zohar, a noted author and speaker, writes with skill and breadth about the implications of new science, and remarkably brings her insights home in ways that are practical and applicable to the science and practice of organizational behavior and management. Rewring the Corporate Brain relates quantum and chaos thinking directly to organizational problems and challenges facing corporate leaders. It offers the human brain and its various thinking structures as the primary model for exercising the full creative capacities of the corporate brain.
Rewiring the Corporate Brain offers a genuinely new conceptual structure for a fundamental transformation in corporate thinking and leadership, along with suggestions for practical, structural implementation. Beautifully written, passionately and clearly argued, Rewiring the Corporate Brain makes new paradigm scientific thinking accessible, practical and inspiring to business readers.

Open your mind.....think differently.......2001-05-28
To some, the whole notion of "The New Science", let alone it's relation to the business world may seem like a bunch of new age babble. We (in the US especially) are used to thinking in terms of action-reaction, events, actions, and people, as individual and isolated. We make distinctions and often-strict divisions between work and the rest of our lives. We thrive on predictability, being able to determine outcomes, and control environments, which can inhibit the ability to quickly adapt to and accept change.
"Rewiring the Corporate Brain" recognizes this, and uses quantum theory to illustrate that we might be missing something. The author demonstrates the shortcomings of the common, rigid Newtonian thinking and organization that permeates so many companies and minds, yet also recognizes that a pure quantum approach is not a cure all. The author presents a hybrid model that recognizes the importance of managing and living to obtain certain objectives, while allowing and encouraging the creativity, exploration, and openness to continually grow and adapt to the torrid pace of change. Not only does the application of quantum thinking make sense for the development and management of organizations, but also when trying to bring the separate parts of ones' life together into a more holistic, satisfying existence.
The book refers to a few related "new science" books, which may be of interest to the reader. It also draws on some early Fast Company articles from the good ol' days before Fast Company became the useless waste of paper it is today.
This book is not technical or difficult to read. You'll be able to polish it off within a few hours. If you liked this book, and would like to read more on the "New Physics", or would simply like to explore it ("New Physics") w/o the business context, pick up a copy of:
"The Dancing Wu Li Masters : An Overview of the New Physics"
A Solid Effort!.......2001-03-23
A new paradigm for leadership and organization........2000-09-05
In this context, Danah Zohar divides this invaluable book into two parts:
I- Using the New Science to Rewire Corporate Thinking. In this part, she basically:
* describes the uses and limitations of traditional paradigms in business activities and other life contexts.
* focuses on three kinds of thinking (serial thinking, associative thinking, and quantum thinking) that the human brain can do, and discusses their advantages and disadvantages.
* contrasts eight key ideas from Newtonian science/old paradigm, and their effects on business thinking, with eight key ideas from quantum science/new paradigm and their application to new thinking about leadership, and thus constructs a management-leadership chart that puts the features of these two contrasting paradigms as follows:
- N.certainty, Q.uncertainty
- N.predictability, Q.rapid change; unpredictability
- N.hierarchy, Q.nonhierarchical networks
- N.division of labor or function fragmentation, Q.multifunctional and holistic (integrated effort)
- N.power emanates from top or center, Q.power emanates from many interacting centers
- N.employees are passive units of production, Q.employees are cocreative partners
- N. single viewpoint; one best way, Q.many view points; many ways of getting things done
- N.competition, Q.cooperation
- N.inflexible structures; heavy on bureaucratic control, Q.responsive and flexible structures; hands-off supervision
- N.efficiency, Q.meaningful service and relationships
- N.top-down (reactive) operation, Q.bottom-up (experimental) operation
II- Structure and Leadership of the Rewired Corporation. In this part, she basically:
* discusses Western/Newtonian and Eastern/Networked models of the self/person and organization, and then attempts to reach a Quantum model of self and organization drawn from the thinking of the new science. And she shows the features of these three models as follows:
- W.conflict and control, E.cooperation, Q.dialogue
- W.self (the personal) wholly excluded and isolated; interactions grounded in universal principles, E.self wholly embedded and contextual; no universal principles, Q.self embedded and contextual with universal dimension
- W.stability achieved through excluding the self and the emotions, and organizing only the predictable and controllable aspects of relationships, E.stability achieved through reinforced familiarity and discipline of the self, Q.stability balanced with instability
- W.rigid boundaries, E.ambiguous boundaries, Q.flexible boundaries
- W.dictatorial leadership, E.consensual leadership, Q.leader relies on trust and feel for situation
- W.rule-bound, E.habit-bound, Q.no set framework from rules or habits
- W.mechanical, E.organic, Q.both naturally unfolding (organic) and that which can be made from it (mechanical)
- W+E.rely on stability, Q.open to change
- W+E.weak in dealing with unexpected change, Q.open to change
- W+E.seek to dampen down or exclude the unexpected, Q.thrives on unexpected
* argues that servant leadership is the essence of quantum thinking and quantum leadership, and then presents a new model of servant leadership.
Finally, she writes, "much of the book contrasts the Newtonian and new sciene, or quantum, approaches to leadership. But this is not to convey a message of either-or. All the fundamental thinking of the new science is about both-and. The new science incorporates the old. Quantum physics does not invalidate Newtonian physics. It just shows that Newton's laws are restricted to one band of reality. But they are still necessary to corporate leadership as the new paradigm, quantum thinking. The core competence I hope to convey in this book is about 'managing at the edge' - that is, becoming aware that there are different paradigms and cultivating the judgement to know when to use one or another, or when to remain at the edge between the two."
I higly recommend this unique study.

Socio-Economic Impact of Rock Bund Construction for Small Farmers of Bam Province/Burkina Faso (Complete Text in German)
Dagmar Kunze Manufacturer: Dissertation.com ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1581120281 |
Download Description
Soil degradation has made erosion control and water harvesting an important measure in most of sub-Sahelian Western Africa. The construction of stone lines, dikes and dams has been proven a sustainable measure which is widely accepted by the rural population of northern Burkina Faso. The objective of a field study which was conducted in Bam Province from 1992 to 1994 was to investigate economic profitability of erosion control measures under farmers' conditions on household level and for different household sub-groups. Main aspects concerned yield changes in small farmers' staple food grain production of sorghum and millet as well as the competition of rock bund construction with other dry season activities. Based on farm surveys, assessment of impact on farmers' fields, investment calculations and risk considerations examined different types of costs: construction and maintenance costs, opportunity costs of dry season activities as well as subsidies offered by development organizations. Results show a high dependence of investment on opportunity costs of family labor and the competition of dry season activities to resource conservation. Farmers' perception of weather induced harvest failure and conservation induced harvest gains makes risk an important factor in rock bund construction. Women as one of the major household sub-groups have no rock bunds on their individual plots and only gain from resource conservation by family fields. So far, it can not be guaranteed that women's economic position is stabilized by resource conservation.

Carpet Monsters and Killer Spores: A Natural History of Toxic Mold
Nicholas P. Money Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

Book Description
Molds are everywhere: we inhale their microscopic spores from birth to death. But when an investigation in Ohio revealed that babies suffering from a serious lung illness had been exposed to a toxic black mold in their homes, millions of Americans became nervous about patches of mold in their own basements and bathrooms. Before long, lawsuits were filed by the residents of mold-contaminated homes in every state. By failing to address water damage, building contractors, plumbers, and insurance agents were held liable for exposing families to an unprecedented microbiological hazard. The mold crisis soon developed into a fully-fledged media circus. In Carpet Monsters and Killer Spores, Nicholas Money explores the science behind the headlines and courtroom dramas, and profiles the toxin-producing mold that is a common inhabitant of water-damaged buildings. Nicholas Money tells the most important mycological story since potato blight, with his inimitable style of scientific clarity and dark humor.Customer Reviews:

Funny Fungi.......2004-06-21
In the preface, Dr. Money says, "Widespread fears about black-mold toxins are a product of the new millennium and deserve a critical, balanced, scientific inquirty. Though I cannot promise anything that boring, I do hope I can dispel some of the media myths about these microorganisms while identifying the real threat that can be posed by a few of these fungi."
Stachybotrys plays a key role in this book. In Chapter 5, Dr. Money discusses the 1993 outbreak of pulmonary hemmorraging (bleeding lungs) in poor children living in Cleveland. When Dr. Money began his book, he first thought that stachybotrys might be an innocent victim of media hype. However, he discovered that stachybotrys chrtarum can produce highly toxic spores. Along with the Cleveland outbreak, he discusses an outbreak of stachybotryotoxicosis in the Soviet Union in the 1940's, and illnesses linked to Stachybotrys among horticulture workers in Europe. Dr. Money also talks about the science used to evaluate the links between Stachybotrys and illnesses, and some of the political issues at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that caused the CDC to soft-pedal Stachybotrys.
This book has a thorough, although daunting, discussion of how allergic reactions are triggered in individuals. The body's allergic reaction is, as Dr. Money points out in Chapter 3 -- Carpet Monsters, an intricate mechanism. Until I read this book, I didn't realize that four types of cells primarily respond to allergens - dendritic cells, T lymphocytes (T cells). B lymphocytes (B cells) and mast cells. Dr. Money talks about each cell type's responses to allergens, and the creation of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies.
"Your Verdict, Please" (Chapter 6) is an overview of mold litigation. It has a very thorough discussion of what happened to Melinda Ballard's home, the resulting litigation, and a breakdown of what the jury awarded Ms. Ballard - and why. Dr. Money also discusses the reduction of the $32 million award to $4 million. This chapter also has a good discussion of how the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Daubert affected the Ballard case.
Dr. Money also discusses mycological warfare -- and he is not using the term as an analogy to what happens in a house with mold. He is discussing the development of mycotoxins as a weapon in armed conflicts.
A Great Book!.......2004-05-05
As Money explores the "black molds" that have received so much attention in our news media, he also explores the cultural event surrounding their reception. The book is fascinating not only as a biological work, but also as a sociological study. Thorough research and diligent attention to detail provide Money with a unique, scientifically grounded perspective, and his quirky humor will have you laughing out-loud all the way through.
Importantly, Money does not provide any easy answers to the pressing questions raised by black molds. Instead, responsibly, he shows us what science knows and what it does not know, giving us a sound, factual basis for interpretation of the many wild claims we see in the media. The only negative factor involved with this book is the fact that readers everywhere have had to spend many hours (and dollars) cleaning their bathrooms like maniacs and replacing moldy shower curtains after reading it!
This explains it all.......2004-04-03

Book Description
Just as speech can be acquired, so can it be lost. Speakers can forget words, phrases, even entire languages they once knew; over the course of time peoples, too, let go of the tongues that were once theirs, as languages disappear and give way to the others that follow them. In Echolalias, Daniel Heller-Roazen reflects on the many forms of linguistic forgetfulness, offering a far-reaching philosophical investigation into the persistence and disappearance of speech. In twenty-one brief chapters, he moves among classical, medieval, and modern culture, exploring the interrelations of speech, writing, memory, and oblivion.
