Book Description
The Instant Economist will give you the basic information every manager needs to survive the economic challenges of modern business. You'll find more theory in fewer pages than you would have thought possible-interest rates and inflation, opportunity costs and the cost of living, prices and profits, debts and deficits-all the confusing and crucial ideas you never quite learned, summarized in easy-to-understand, impossible-to-forget images and phrases. This amazing little book is an amusing dialogue between a young MBA and an old Professor of Economics. Like most of us, this young manager-to-be has taken courses and slogged through the formulas of basic economics; but he still doesn't have the first idea of what economics really means. As we listen, the Processor explains the real points of macro, micro, and international economics concepts without graphs or jargon or math or anything but common sense.
Customer Reviews:
conceptual, without the math.......2007-07-30
I've never had an economics class, and don't have the patience to wade through a textbook. So, for me this book is perfect. Basic concepts are presented without any math. It explains how these concepts are related, and how changing one variable changes another. It gives me just enough knowledge to read a business journal, or discuss some topic at a party. I have to reread it sometimes, because I forget -- but I can do that in a couple of hours, with the clear and simple way it's written. It strikes me as simple, without sacrificing substance.
An Instant Choice.......2006-06-23
The Instant Economist manages to explain the basics of economics in simple language that enables you to retain much of the information you read. I strongly recommend it for people of all fields interested in the principles behind economics, which can at times seem complex and overly-technical.
Excellent non-technical refresher.......2005-08-06
This is a great re-introduction to micro- and macro-economics which avoids the math and jargon, but focuses on the underlying concepts. The Instant Economist would be an excellent refresher for an incoming MBA student because of its practical application of economics to business.
A great introduction to macro/microeconomics!.......1999-01-13
This book is an easy-to-read introduction to fundamental macro, micro, and international economic theory. The reason the book is so effective is that it is written in dialogue; the "plot" involves a budding manager talking to his father's former college economics professor. By telling otherwise dull theory in a story form, the author effectively enlightens the reader on important economic theory.
This would be a great book to read prior to taking a macroeconomics or microeconomics class!

Book Description
This book provides practitioners with an overview of the principles & methods needed to build reliable biometric systems. It covers 3 main topics: key biometric technologies, testing & management issues, & the legal and system considerations of biometric systems for personal verification/identification. It focuses on the 4 most widely used technologies - speech, fingerprint, iris & face recognition. It includes: · In-depth coverage of the technical and practical obstacles which are often neglected by application developers & system integrators & which result in shortfalls between expected and actual performance; · Detailed guidelines on biometric system evaluation; · Protocols & benchmarks which will allow developers to compare performance & track system improvements. Biometric Systems - Technology, Design and Performance Evaluation is intended as a reference book for anyone involved in the design, management or implementation of biometric systems.
Customer Reviews:
face recognition needs more work.......2007-02-15
This is primarily an algorithms book, though perhaps the authors might resist such a characterisation. By this I mean that there are detailed descriptions of how various biometric systems do pattern matching. These vary from iris recognition systems to fingerprint matching systems and face recognition methods.
The iris and fingerprint methods seem well established. Certainly, fingerprint matching is now a mature discipline. Where automated methods not only speed up searching of millions of fingerprints, but they also remove a lot of subjectivity.
Face recognition is still a work in progress. Much harder. The idea of a "face space" arises - the set of all possible images of faces. Where these might be three dimensional. Though much effort is expended on two dimensional images, since these are what the vast majority of cameras produce.
Considerable space is devoted to testing the above methods. Important in order to assess efficacy of new methods and to measure any progress in these fields.
Good overview, coverage and easy to understand.......2005-03-25
This book provides a good coverage of the technology,
methods, and the core ideas of four leading biometric
systems. The various real-world applications for these
systems, the performance, current state of art are also
described in details. It also discusses the benchmarks
for comparing the performance and for system
improvements.
This book is easy to understand for readers who are
completely new to world of biometrics. It provides
user an overview of each system, their practical
drawbacks, providing the reader an idea of what
technology to choose for a particular type of
application and enough information where he can
relatively make a choice of which technology to invest
in taking into consideration the time of deployment,
cost etc.
A Clear Winner from Biometrics Pioneers !.......2005-01-16
Biometric Authentication has become a first-class, full-fledged, field of study with its own diverse composite of foundational technologies at its core. As is the case with any "highly-interdisciplinary" field, the challenge for textbook authors is to present a body of work which provides an adequate scope of material while at the same time providing adequate detail for that body of knowledge.. Wayman and company with this current work have met that challenge admirably.
This book provides a wealth of pertinent information, results, and lessons learned along the way in the research, development and deployment of biometric systems worldwide. The contributors include researchers and practitioners who have been involved in the field since the very beginning. All of the popular person recognition modalities are examined including fingerprint, face, speaker, and iris, as well as large scale system design and integration issues. Also covered are evaluation, testing, and the all important societal privacy issues from both the US and European perspective. The text comprehensively and coherently addresses the material at a surprisingly accessible level; the majority of the material can be readily understood without an advanced background in higher mathematics or computer science.
I highly recommend this book for beginning and intermediate level biometrics professionals requiring comprehensive knowledge of this relatively new field. It also provides a wonderful jumping-off point for further study and exploration.
Customer Reviews:
THE EASTERN COUGAR.......2007-02-14
I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS BOOK AND THE LEVEL OF SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION INVOLVED IN THE SEARCH FOR THESE ANIMALS. I LIVE IN PENNSYLVANIA AND I ENGAGE IN A LOT OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN CLINTON, CENTRE AND LYCOMING COUNTIES. ALL OF THESE COUNTIES HAVE HAD SIGHTINGS AND I HAVE ACTUALLY MET PEOPLE WHO HAVE SEEN COUGARS. I WAS VERY PLEASED TO SEE THAT THE STANDARDS OF PROOF WERE VERY HIGH FOR CONFIRMATIONS LISTED IN THIS BOOK. I WAS ALSO GLAD TO SEE THAT THERE WAS VERY LITTLE CREDENCE GIVEN TO "BLACK" PANTHER SIGHTINGS. THIS IN MY MIND IS A BOGUS ISSUE AND IF TRUE CERTAINLY POINTS TO AN EXOTIC ANIMAL. WELL DONE.
A bit disappointing.......2006-02-03
This book is a collection of publications regarding the eastern cougar with occasional commentary from the editors. Most of the pages are devoted to accounts of sightings or other evidence of cougar acitivity in the eastern states, and at least some of these publications (newspaper and magazine articles, letters, essays, and a few scientific journal articles) can be found on the internet, and others are summarized on the internet at, for example, the Cougar Network website. The editors' organization of the publications is not particularly compelling and their commentary is sparse. Still, it is a convenience to have them glued together into one book, and perhaps for some people that will be worth the cost of the book. For that reason, I gave the book 3 stars instead of 2.
What is lacking is meaningful discussion by the editors of the complicated issues that come up when dealing with everything from eye witness accounts, to what may be accepted as scientific "proof", to aiding the recovery of a large feline predator. A little more effort and "meat" from the editors could have made this an outstanding book. They do touch upon these some of these issues but not in sufficient depth. Perhaps they minimized their own input as an attempt to present the material in an unbiased fashion. However, we can hardly assume letters and newspaper articles to be, as a rule, unbiased.
One example of something that could have been discussed relates to Dr. Melanie Culver's DNA studies, which suggest that all North American cougars belong to the same subspecies. It appears that this has not been accepted by the authorities, who evidently continue to rely on past morphologic studies which suggest that there are 32 distinct subspecies of cougar in North America. Why is it that Culver's findings have not been embraced? Is it due to fear of the social and political issues that would flare up in consequence to recognizing the eastern cougar as the same subspecies as the Florida panther, (which would imply that the former should enjoy protection under the endangered species act, as does the latter)? Or, are there valid scientific reasons to doubt the DNA studies and give more weight to morphologic studies? Or, thirdly, is it standard practice for the scientific community to wait for an independent investigator to reproduce one scientist's results before they are taken as fact? It seems to me that a discussion of this critical issue would have been entirely appropriate.
In my view, the best part of the book is, by far, Dr. David Maehr's nine page essay, entitiled Can the Florida Panther Provide Insight Into Restoring the Eastern Cougar? This is a very balanced piece which seems both skeptical and hopeful at the same time. Dr. Maehr briefly discusses some of the more complex issues and helps put the whole subject into perpective, and this partially makes up for what the editors neglect to do.
In summary, I think a review of the publications with thought provoking discussion would have been far more effective than a collection of full length publications assembled by editors who provide little input of their own. The old newspaper articles, letters, etc. by themselves just don't pull together to do the suject matter justice.
The Eastern Cougar: Historic Accounts, Scientific Investigations, New Evidence.......2006-01-12
Read & Reviewed By: Barbara Chaplin, Executive Director, Cougar Quest - Virginia, www.btcent.com/CougarQuest.htm
The Eastern Cougar: Historic Accounts, Scientific Investigations, New Evidence (edited by Chris Bogiano and Jerry Roberts, published by Stackpole Books, 2005) provides an astonishing array of historic accounts and scientific evidence, carefully compiled and objectively edited by the authors, to provide a strong probability that cougars survive in small breeding pockets in the east. Cougars (also known as mountain lion, puma, panther, painter, and catamount among other laymen names and `Puma (=Felis) concolour couguar' or `Puma concolor cougar' among scientists) are large, elusive, powerful feline predators supposedly extirpated from eastern United States and Canada prior to 1900. But, cougar reports and evidence continue to surface.
The reader does not need an advanced degree in biology, zoology, or any other scientific study to understand, appreciate, and learn from this book. Even the most intimidating article title, "Genetic Variation, Gene Flow, and Population Identification for North American Pumas" by the premier cougar DNA research expert Melanie Culver, has been written in terms laymen can understand; Ms. Culver is able to explain genetics like Carl Sagan explained the universe. Maps (refer specifically to the map of "Confirmed Cougar Evidence ..." facing chapter 2, "Reappearance: Where's The Evidence?") and photographs assist the reader in visualizing the animal and where scientifically confirmed field evidence suggests it may be living in the wild. Reproduced in chapter 3, "Outlook: Can They Come Back?", is the U.S. Department of the Interior's official position on eastern cougars. In a response to a request that the "Similarity of Appearance" provision of the Endangered Species Act, which protects all cougars in Florida panther territory, be applied to all cougars in the east, a Director stated: "... the Service's position remains that the eastern cougar is extirpated." and "Use of the Similarity of Appearance provision ... in the remaining eastern States is [not] justified at this time."
I highly recommend The Eastern Cougar: Historic Accounts, Scientific Investigations, New Evidence - it is a treasure to be read, re-read, and referred to.

Customer Reviews:
The Sequel is never as good as the original........2007-08-20
This book should be titled "Chicken Soup for the Elk Hunter Part Two". It is folksy and easy to read but light on technical detail. I didn't get very much knowledge from the book although I enjoyed parts of it.
The book is definately not written for bowhunters.
Elk Hunting 201, Big Bulls.......2007-03-09
This is an excellent follow-up book to the "101" Edition. There is valuable information and essential hunting tips, from binoculars and boots to rifles and scopes. Plus, Jay Houston is a valuable resource of experience and knowledge for questions and recommendations for quality hunts and trust-worthy outfitters.
Book Description
Death Investigator's Handbook became an instant classic and is used by homicide divisions in federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, in the United States and overseas. This expanded and updated edition brings death investigation up to the minute and contains 50 percent more material than the original. It includes the very latest on DNA, cold cases, bioterrorism, mass disaster sites, profiling secrets and much, much more. If you want to know more about the art and science of crime-scene processing, forensic evaluations and investigative techniques, go to the source that professionals use.
Customer Reviews:
A Must for professionals/Students in Crime Scene Tech!.......2004-01-02
I bought this book some time ago, and has been useful from the start. It does, indeed, give basic information on evidence recovery, Balistics, blood spatter, drowning, and other scenarios you may see. It is on a matter of fact based.
If you are looking for reasons why you are preforming these proceedures, I agree, this is not the book for you.
But if you are looking for do's and don't and want to see how to correctly regonize, secure and recover a crime scene then this is the book for you!
not for beginners.......2002-12-16
I guess I should have realised from the title that this book would not be for me. I don't have any background in this, I'm just a regular person studying for a bachelor's degree in Science and I wanted to get a book for interest on this topic. I would have greatly benefited from a sample of the pages inside and I could have seen the structure of it. The entire book is point form and quite bare (not of information, there's tonnes of that, but bare of anything to round it out). It literally is for people actually in the field and if you're not "in the field" then don't even bother getting this book. It is NOT for general interest sake. It is point form, some of the printing is fuzzy in a couple of places, there are only a handful of pencil sketches (that's all the illustration it has). But it does have step by step information of what to do if you're a cop (but I'm thinking if you were a cop, you really shouldn't have to stop to consult a book when you're at a crimescene). There it is, make what you will of this review and good luck.
Disappointing.......2002-11-02
Getting started in homicide investigation, and after reading the reviews here, it seemed this was the book for me. Unfortunately this book didn't help much at all. The entire book is in an outline format that just gives bullets on what to do and not to do. It doesn't explain the WHY of any of these things. Without the explainations behind the items, I did not learn anything from this book. I recommend you look elsewhere.
death Investigator's HandBook.......2002-05-07
This is the book! It cover's more then any other book I have read so far. I am retired Sgt. from the NYS Child Abuse Unit, and I have seen the worst of the worst out there, but I wish I had this book with me on every case I ever worked! The information stored in here and procedure's to follow and follow up make it worth reading this book cover to cover as many times as you can! Bravo Mr. Eliopulos, job well done!
Absolutely A Must Read.......1999-11-24
This is the most comprehensive book on field investigation I have ever seen. Covers death scene evidence gathering in a manner that insures every detail is observed and that a strong chain of evidence is developed (hope the LAPD has a bunch of these!). As a writer this one is now tops on my list for research involving murder, both for the intrepid police investigator and for the perp to get away with the crime. Excellent book - can't say much more than that.

Three more classic Tintin adventures.......2007-10-11
Many of us grew up on Tintin and love them for their great nostalgia value, and reminisces of childhood, as well as the brave values of a simpler, more clarified world of yesteryear.
This volume brings together three of the best loved Tintin classic in one handy volume- and for not much more than the price of one.
They are:
The Calculus Affair
Strange things are happening at Captain Haddock's estate at Marlinspike.
Thugs are up to something, and all the glass is mysteriously exploding.
Soon Tintin and the Captain discover that Professor Calculus had been kidnapped.
Their investigation leads them to Switzerland and then to Borduria, ruled by the iron grip of the Stalinist Kurvi Tasch regime.
The Bordurians, it turns, out have kidnapped the Professor, to develop nuclear weapons and thus enable them to attain world domination.
This is quite eerily prophetic, being written in 1956, when it seemed quite impossible for a tinpot dictatorship to acquire such weapons of mass destruction, but we now we see these very same devices being developed by tyrannies such as Libya, Syria, Iran and North Korea.
The Calculus Affair is filled with espionage and gripping adventure.
The Red Sea Sharks
After a strange encounter with General Alcazar of San Theodoros, and then getting home to see that Emir Ben Kalish Ezab, has sent his thoroughly obnoxious son, Prince Abdullah, to stay at Marlinspike, the Emir is deposed by the evil Revolutionary thug, Sheik Bab El Er.
Tintin and the Captain fly to Khemed, to try to get to the bottom of an illegal arms buying racket and if they can, to help their friend, the Emir.
There they take a boat to Mecca , where they must battle several enemies , in a high adventure on the Red Sea. Before the adventure is through , they will break a slave smuggling ring and ensure the defeat of several villains.
The issue of slave trade by Arabs , of Africans , was not only still going on when this book was written in 1958 , but is still endemic today , in places such as the Sudan.
These adventures are always full, of life and colour.
Tintin in Tibet
Firmly convinced that his friend Chang, has survived the plane crash in Nepal, Tintin, accompanied by Captain Haddock, sets off for Nepal to rescue Chang.
After passing through New Deli and Nepal (where we explore the sights and sounds of these wonderful places, Tintin and the reluctant Captain set off for the Tibetan Himalayas for the mission impossible.
This is one of Herges best works as he explores the , hazards of Himalayan mountain climbing, the gentle Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and the truth about the Yeti , commonly known as the abominable snowman.
The only thing left out, is the brutal Chinese occupation of Tibet which still continues today .The book was recently released in China, on condition that the name Tibet was left out of the title, another example that after the holocaust of 2 million Tibetans, the Red Chinese are still not content in their drive to wipe out the beautiful culture and memory of Tibet.
A particular interesting scene is the psychedelic delirium of Captain Haddock during his sunstroke.
The strong 60s flavour of this is interesting considering that the book was written at the ver dawn of this era-1960.
Great fun!.......2007-10-10
This series of Tintin anthologies is a great buy--the durable hardback cover and the high-quality paper means these books will last a long, long time.
Disappointment.......2007-07-15
I've always been a Tintin fan, and wanted to buy a book for my son. However the format of this book was disappointing, as the original (single) story books were more like A4. The book (with three stories in one) is just too small. It's not the fact that there are three stories all in one volume, it's simply the size of the book. Why was it changed? If you're thinking of buying one of these ... check the measurements! The're not the same size as the originals.
great stories.......2007-03-10
As usual, my 7 years old loved to read Tintin, and I loved to rediscover the stories too ! It is a great book to transport you and your little ones into new adventures. Calculus and Captain Haddock are hilarious. Tintin is adventurous, smart and a good example to my kid.
1956-1960.......2007-02-07
Comic #6 of "The Adventures of Tintin" 3-in-1s has "The Calculus Affair" (1956), "The Red Sea Sharks" (1958) and "Tintin and Tibet" (1960). There's some fine stuff here, but it's not my favorite time in the series. Tough times for Herge too.
"The Calculus Affair" features a new invention and a kidnapping, set in Switzerland and "Borduria". From me, 3 stars.
"Red Sea Sharks" is set in the Middle East, and features Abdullah. From me, 4 stars.
"Tintin in Tibet" is pretty famous in the series, and sees Tintin go out to find his old friend Chang, stranded in the Himalayas. From me, 5 stars.
Kind of like his later stuff a bit better. Worth a look for fans though.
