Book Description
Examines the growth and transformation of the Middle East economy during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The text looks at how the region's economic structures were fundamentally altered by the growing impact of European trade and finance, and by the internal reforms of the rulers of Egypt. It also examines in detail the impact of this process on the four central areas of the Middle East. The result, the author argues, was the creation of a fixed pattern of agricultural, industrial and financial activity. The states formed after the collapse of teh Ottoman Empire found that altering this pattern in their attempts to promote a less dependent form of development was frought with difficulty; and the problems they faced and their different approaches are still highly relevant to the Middle East's economic development today.

Book Description
This book examines sequential coalition formation in oligopolies. Coalitions refer to mergers and acquisitions, cartels, and associations. The principal aim is the prediction and explanation of the coalition structure - whether an industry will emerge as a monopoly, say, or as a collection of sub-coalitions.
In environments where decisions to form coalitions are made sequentially, the prediction and explanation of the equilibrium coalition structure can differ dramatically from the textbook simultaneous-move model. This difference derives from the knowledge effect, which is unique to the sequential-move models.

Book Description
The field of plant genetic engineering has arisen from the laboratory and into the market place as a technology to provide farmers and consumers with improved crops. 1996 marks a turning point as the first genetically engineered crops to control agronomically important pests are registered for commercial sale. In most cases it has taken over a decade to develop commercially viable products. This book serves both as an update of current technologies that have been proven successful for engineering insect tolerant crops and an overview of new technologies that are being pursued for the development of new genetically engineered crops in the future. The book includes an introductory chapter on the world wide importance of insect problems in crops and the advantages of genetically engineered crops over traditional breeding; reviews insect control principles that are being develpoed for genetically engineered crops; and provides an overview of many new areas that wil lead to new insect control agents in the next decade.
Book Description
While scientists usually examine either ecological systems or social systems, the need exists for an interdisciplinary approach to the problems of environmental management and sustainable development. Developed under the auspices of the Beijer Institute in Stockholm, this volume analyzes social and ecological linkages in selected ecosystems using an international and interdisciplinary case study approach. The chapters provide detailed information on a variety of management practices for dealing with environmental change. Taken as a whole, the book contributes to the greater understanding of essential social responses to changes in ecosystems. A key feature is a set of new, or rediscovered, principles for sustainable ecosystem management.

Linking Social and Ecological Systems .......2005-10-25
Excellent book, very well written and researched. Well worth having on the book shelf!

When naturalist Kilham was asked to take in two orphaned black bear cubs, the conventional wisdom was that he would end up with 200-pound brutes too dependent to leave home. So Kilham decided to try his own unconventional method--he raised them in their natural habitat, surrounded by the wild bear-filled woods of New Hampshire. As their bear mother, he was given an unprecedented look into the lives of bears and what he observed turns bear stereotypes on their head. Black bears exhibit behaviors thought to be found only in humans and great apes, such as an intricate system of communication and cooperation, insight, planning, deception, and even ethics, like fair play, empathy, and altruism (qualities not found in apes). Kilham, who has now raised 26 cubs, is an intrepid bear mom, and a humble and delightful storyteller. This is an irresistible story of some of the most endearing rogues ever encountered. --Lesley Reed
Book Description
A first-person account of wild bear behavior that is both a thrilling animal story and a groundbreaking work of science. In the spring of 1993, Ben Kilham, a naturalist who lives in the woodlands of New Hampshire, began raising a pair of orphaned wild black bears. The experience changed his life. While spending thousands of hours with the cubs, Kilham discovered unknown facets of bear behavior that have radically revised our understanding of animal behavior. Now widely recognized for his contributions to wildlife science, Kilham reveals that bears are altruistic and cooperate with unrelated, even unknown individuals, while our closer relatives, the supposedly more highly evolved chimps, cooperate only within troops of recognizable members. Kilham, who turned a disability, dyslexia, to his advantage as a naturalist, offers fascinating insights into the emotional life of bears. His work-which has been featured in several National Geographic television specials-also illustrates the powerful black bear intelligence that has survived bounties and overhunting to make them North America's dominant omnivore, familiar to every reader. Beyond the natural history, he introduces individual bears who become enthralling and memorable characters. As in the bestselling books by Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, Among the Bears explores the breaking down of mutual suspicion and building up of trust between species, with its hopeful implications for the shared future of humans and animals in the wild.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding bears.......2006-11-07
Kilham's experience and Gray's writing offer excellent insight into bears' instinctive knowledge by describing how young orphaned cubs in Kilham's care learn how to become wild bears. I reread the book immediately after concluding it so I could take full advantage its information. I recommend Among the Bears to anyone who deals with these amazing animals professionally or informally. Motivation, communication, and dispersal are well covered in a truly understandable and engrossing manner.
Among the Bears: Raising Orphaned Cubs in the Wild.......2006-03-13
I'm only half way through the book but I can tell you it is difficult to put down. As a wildlife Rehabilitator I find Benjamin Kilham's book informative yet fun to read.
Black Bears are great .......2005-12-25
I just finished reading Among the Bears and I think Benjamin did a great job at describing the bears body language, and his explenation of what their sounds and gestures meant are superb,,,I have seen a lot of bears in the last 40 years and have seen several of these gestures..This book starts out a little slow but soon picks up and then I could not stop reading, This book does tell it like it really is in the bears world good and bad
Benjamin Kilham is a complete idiot - He actually supports bear hunting!!!.......2005-07-31
I've never been more disappointed in a book and I think this is the first book I've ever actually returned. I didn't want this man to get a single penny from me. My concerns were immediately raised when I read that he was a gunmaker and when he made the comment "I reached out to poke the radio on to a country western station. I like to listen to songs with lyrics I can understand". So I immediately look up bear hunting in the index and am soon horrified to read that he supports hunting and even bear hunting and tries to justify it as a valid wildlife management technique! How he could ever raise cubs and yet still support murdering them for fun is beyond me. Torturing and/or killing animals for pleasure is a classic sign of being a sociopath. So if you love wildlife and bears like I do and if you're an intelligent person then you will avoid this book like the plaque. If you want to read an amazing book about bears and two amazing people then get "Grizzly Heart" by Charlie Russel and Maureen Enns. Unfortunately, for some reason this book isn't yet available in the US and you must order it from Canada but its worth the extra trouble.
Meet the Bears.......2002-09-17
This book is basically a primary source about black bears, a subject that, as the author points out, has received spotty attention. "Among the Bears" partially remedies this neglect: it is rich in anecdote, modest yet persuasive in analyses.
This book has many small, satisfying pleasures to it, not the least of which is the idea of a large, stereotypically manly guy like Kilham being a mother to these bears. And he is an amazing mother, patient, wise and tireless. He always lends his bears an ear, literally (for suckling). Another is the reader learns along with Kilham, who continues to turn over the behaviors of his bears in his head, often coming to explanations only after thinking and experimenting. Finally, his physical encounters with bears are entertaining and, I think, instructive about how bears (and humans) become at ease with each other.
The book is very plain in language. As his story progressed, the content of the ideas was plenty engaging, and more than made up for any lack of style.
Telling the history of his interactions with bears, including an unusually large male interested in Squirty, one of the female bears he has raised, Killham ventures prescriptive advice about how to handle a bear encounter only at the end of the book. "Hold your ground, stay calm, maintain eye contact, and let the situation resolve itself. It will." (245)
Throughout the book, Kilham has relevant and undogmatic insights about hunting and hunters.
A small complaint: A bibliography, or more simply--in the character of this straightforward, unpretentious book--a short list of suggested readings would have been welcome. However, the basic but thorough index is excellent.

Customer Reviews:
It's an Oxford, but still lacking.......2005-01-16
Any language dictionary is sorely lacking if it does not include complete pronunciation as well. I collect dictionaries and every English dictionary I own shows proper pronunciation immediately following each word. I own 4 Irish Gaelic dictionaries besides this one and not one of them helps with pronunciation. I don't want to have to keep a tape player at hand in order to get the proper pronunciation of an Irish word from a piece of literature, not to mention invest in a collection of Irish language tapes to have to forward and rewind to death to find the word I'm looking for. I want to grab my trusty Irish/English dictionary or phrase book and look it up quickly. A truly complete, I emphasise complete here, dictionary includes "diction", elocution, pronunciation.
Gaelic is not for the faint of heart.......2002-04-12
A difficult language to learn, and even harder to master. The letters have a different sound to them than any lanquage based on the Latin forms. However, it is helping a great deal in my quest to conquor this old, and very melodic tounge. Now I just need to work on my brogue.
Gaelic is not for the faint of heart.......2002-04-12
A difficult language to learn, and even worse to master. The letters have a different sound to them than any lanquage based on the Latin forms. However, it is helping a great deal in my quest to conquor this old, and very melodic tounge. Now I just need to work on my brogue.
Very good Irish/English dictionary.......2002-03-21
As a learner of Irish I have purchased several Irish-English dictionaries. I was very pleased with my purchase of the Oxford Irish Pocket Irish Dictionary (which is a bit bigger than the Oxford Irish Minidictionary, and requires a fairly big pocket). This dictionary includes much more help for beginning learners of Irish going into a lot of detail about common multipurpose Irish words. It also includes entries for many irregular verbs in several tenses. These entries merely point you back to the main entry for the verb, but this is of great help when you don't recognize the main verb from the tense you are looking up. The complaint that it doesn't have pronunciation for the headwords is a fair one. I wrote the editors, and they told me that they had hoped to include it, but didn't get it into this edition. Pronunciation for Irish headwords can be found in two other Irish/English dictionaries: Foclóir Póca Gaeilge/Béarla and the larger version of it called Foclóir Scoile (which has larger print and more words than Foclóir Póca) both published by An Gúm the publishing arm of the Irish Government's Education Ministry. I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about learning the Irish language in spite of the lack of pronunciation for headwords.
The Oxford Pocket Irish Dictionary: Bearla-Gaeilge/Gaeilge-.......2001-07-14
I'm extremely disappointed with the dictionary. The main reason I ordered it was to get phonetic pronunciation with every word. I read a lot of historically based novels about Ireland and would like to know how to say the words in Irish that appear in the books. I returned it immediately (along with the Scottish/Gaelic dictionary that was equally lacking).

Customer Reviews:
Lovely Eye Candy.......2007-10-01
Handbags is a light-weight (as in no information on what makes a great handbag great) lots of very good photographs of iconic "classic" and "it" bags. Lovely biographical sketches of taste-making handbag designers and many historical bags and historical details (but not adequate if you are doing historical costumes). One brief sketch of how a very high-quality (Hermes) bag is constructed. All in all a lovely read, though, because of the pictures.
wonderful book with historical information.......2007-03-12
Another excellent book on handbags with beautiful photographs and descriptions by designer/historical context.
Handbags.......2007-01-09
This is a great product because it shows you all the collection of purses that have been made. It has the expensive ones and the wierd ones and how they are made popular.
Cute, but small.......2007-01-04
I somehow thought this would be a much larger book. It's quite small in size. Still it's lots of fun to see all the variety of handbags over time. It's a light hearted subject.
MY MOM BOUGHT HER FIRST BIRKIN FROM HALEY'S COUTURE, AND ANOTHER FROM MIGHTY KISMET AFTER READING THIS BOOK!.......2006-09-01
This book helped my mom and I understand the different handbags out there that are really looked at as high fasion. We are both into fashion and after reading this book, she bought two authentic Hermes birkins - WOW!! - from Haleys Couture Galleria aka hermes galleria and MightyKismet. Both excessively nice ladies. Awesome news for us. We recommend this book as it helps you learn all of the styles out there and is really like one big encyclopedia. Awesome. Thanks.
