The key concept of this book is that every organization could evolve trough several status. There is no a suggested preeferred status. Winning organisations are those which could find the right 'alignment' between market needs and behaviours and the internal organization. The evolution of the organization is only driven by the market change. The book focus on transitions between these different stages, analysing the impact of these changes through the entire Value Chain. Invented Here is a milestone for those people which needs to manage transition also in a turbulent environment. It helps managers to think about the actual company positioning and to build a framework helping to identify market changes and relevant organizational needed impact. Simply great!

Learning From Others.......2000-11-25

The importance of organization design on the success of a business, be it that of a service company or a product supplier, is often underestimated. Strategy alone is not enough.

The great value of this book lies in 3 areas :

i) Use of illustrating failure as well as success - better to learn from someone else's mistakes so that you can, hopefully, avoid them.

ii) Identifying in meaningful terms where to position your organisation for your product/service e.g. if you need a great mass production machine, that is how you should organize; when your customers need more, don't hide from it - just do it well.

iii) The style is refreshingly alive. You feel you can relate to real people solving real problems. Too often, books like this feel like they belong only in libraries - this one offers genuinely practical insight. It's up to you to apply it.

If I have one (minor) criticism, it is the title. Don't let it mislead you. This book is a very helpful guide to many aspects of organizational design and a better title, in my opinion, would be something like:- "Optimizing Your Organization For Your Customers"

Ecosystems produce goods and services that are essential for the wellbeing of humans and other organisms. The earth's expanding human population is altering both pattern and process in ecosystems, and hence is impacting the provision of ecosystem goods and services at a variety of scales. Food production and other ecosystem services, such as the many benefits provided by forests, are not exclusive of one another at a regional scale. Although it is becoming obvious that uncoordinated local management is inadequate to address regional ecosystem changes in the face of regional drivers of change, few regional governments have addressed the need for holistic landscape management of regional ecosystem services. We compare and contrast two regional programs, the agricultural agenda of integrated pest management (IPM) and an as-yet hypothetical, fragmentation-oriented conservation agenda that we term 'Regional Fragmentation Management' (RFM). IPM has a strong practical foundation but is weak on theory. RFM has a stronger theoretical base, but is weak on practice and has mainly focused on protected areas. Both programs address only a small subset of the larger question of how to effectively maintain regional production of regional ecosystem services. Some of the successes of IPM practitioners in building institutions and achieving societal acceptance for their program, particularly in relation to regionally coordinated ('areawide') pest management, suggest that regional ecosystem management is plausible. IPM offers some ingredients of an institutional role model for a broader, more ambitious program that seeks to manage regional ecosystem services and processes in a sustainable manner. As the looming crisis of global climate change brings a potential window of opportunity for the introduction of novel approaches for managing deforestation, closer synergies between conservation and agriculture at regional scales seem not only possible, but essential.

This is a magnificent book, remarkable for its breadth, depth, and accessibility.

Elegant discussions of background material including topics in quantum chemistry
and thermodynamics render this book a self-contained tutorial on the many-faceted problems of
protein physics. Because of its structure as a series of increasingly sophisticated lectures, it should be accessible to a wide variety of audiences with diverse backgrounds.

To top it off, the text is beautifully written, at points nearly poetic including even a Greek chorus, a pleasure to read and to study. I am reminded of a few other great lecture series in science where razor-sharp intellects explain complicated phenomena from soup to nuts with wisdom and wit.

Anyone from professional scientist to motivated novice in almost any analytic discipline should find this a valuable introduction and detailed study of protein physics.

Excellent book for both beginners and experts. I will recommend it to students as a source of initial knowledge not only on proteins, but also on biopolymers and biophysics in general. For instance, presentation of forces is superb. I am also positive that every expert will find new non trivial insights on great many subtle points of this difficult topic.

til now i still can't take my eyes out of their work... the poetry, the beauty, the nature wild, theirs ideas and thoughts, the colors, the research, the creativity... theirs intelligence (artist's intellligence).. their sensibilities... those british artists get it ALL... how can i describe it?.... it gives you so much - amazing photography, beautiful art, fascinating stories - and leaves you feeling positively up-lifted, excited by the world we live in and inspired to travel and take an interest in activities such as conservation.
olly and suzi are true artists, clearly passionate about the subject of their work. the work itself displays raw talent, honesty and beauty. couple this with the other wonderful elements of this book and you have a truly awesome document that i defy anyone not to appreciate.

art is always subjective and individual views such as my own should only be taken in this context but these two pair of chancers really seem to take the biscuit.

forget your damien hursts this self promoting pair and their various hangers-on just seem to continue to exist in the ongoing absence of any real interest in their work.

for completists/students only i would suggest this book, a collection of childike daubings seems to me like emptiness masquarading as 'art' by a couple of pretty talentless pretentious students with travelust and a penchant for the goodlife beyond their ability to pay for it. i might well be wrong and they may be wonderful people.

to me stuff like this remains aesthetically empty unless associated with some spurious idea of post modernism (yet another art world scam to get your money). painting wise its just rot.

unless you're some kind of USA based tree hugger with a liking for wearing t-shirts emblazoned with lone wolves (sic) and grizzly bears then this humble reader strongly suggests you keep your money in your pocket!

remember when painters used to able to actually paint as opposed to come up with a 'big concept'? or at least remember when the 'big concept' was actually heartfelt and not some careerist blag on a way to climb the art worlds social ladder and live the life you really have no ability to pay for thru through the sale of your work and demand for it from the public?

Simply put, this is an extraordinary book. A friend gave it to me and I do not know whether it is more a art, travel, nature, wilderness adventure, or photography book, because it defies classification, but in any event, it is a serious page-turner. I dont know where to start...the images from all over the coolest and most exotic places on earth, of some of the funkiest and loveliest paintings ever, are captivating. These guys live most children's dreams, they travel around, hang out with rare species of animals (some dangerous, some not), paint them and then get the animals to interact with the art - so they are at one with nature, creating stunning images and at the same time living at one with nature. A perfect gift for kids, visual artists, performance artists, photographers, or people with a sense of adventure or wanderlust.

I found this book to be incredibly helpful in identifying two "mystery" fish caught this summer in an inland lake Northern Michigan. This book provides a fairly in-depth summary of each respective fish, of which there are many, and interesting facts about habitat, identification, and much more. I would highly recommend for any fisherman (or fisherwoman) who occasionally hooks the unknown fish!

A fisherman's favorite book . A book about every fresh water fish you can think of and evan more. Before I read this book I couldn't tell anyone what kind of fish I had caught. I bought this book with the intention to use it as a fish identifier. It serves its purpose well. The pictures are on almost every fish you can find around here. Well described, to the point, and informative. I would recommend this book to someone who just wants to use to to see what they have on the end of their line. Not very much information on how to find this type of fish in a lake or anyhing. Very good overall.

when your boss, all the media you read or watch, most of your teachers, and some of your own family members tell you using words, or hint through their actions, that you are no good because you are [fill in the blank]. After a million iterations, you'd lose any confidence you might have and you'd live your life allowing [fill in the blank] persons to step all over you. While an insult is less harmful than a bullet, a few hundred insults has roughly the same effect as holding a gun to someone's head because you're basically saying, "obey or die of lonliness and starvation." Now, to fill in the blank, the mobs making these silent threats for the last 300 years has been predominantly (not always) white, male, and wealthy. The people receiving this has been women, people of color, and the poor, not to mention short and fat people.

Are words really equivalent to physical assault?.......2002-02-19

One of the key points of this book is that words can be as harmful as physical assault, which is why the authors believe that the law should suppress both.

But if the two are equivalent, if hateful words are equivalent to bullets, then logically one can respond to words with bullets. Is that the view the authors really believe in and wish to promote? I sure hope not. But then the entire premise of the book is undermined.

The authors deconstruct the racial, gender, and class dynamics that shape our instutions, particularly our courts. It not surprising that the featured authors launched such a tremendous movement as Critical Race Theory.

Great Book to Open Eyes of Those who Care but Are Not Aware.......2001-05-20

This book is incredible. As a highschool student, I never really realized all of the barriers set up against people of color in the law. I coudldn't figure out why my black friends still didn't have the respect if laws are "neutral." Dorothy Roberts article in this book about the prosecution of drug-addicted pregnant women addresses many touchy issues and brings the problems with the law directly to light. And the introduction to this book clarifies CRT in a very helpful way. An excellent read.

EXCELLENT INTRO BOOK TO CRT- MUST HAVE.......2001-01-07

I have had this reader for some time now- and have since had a chance to fully appreciate all that it offers. The title couldn't be more accurate- these are the key writings that shaped the Critical Race Theory (CRT) movement. This is a must have for any law student who is looking to explore the scholarship of persons of color who have largely been ignored or excluded in the legal discussions involving civil rights. It is also a great starter book for anyone interested in exploring CRT.

The price is great on this book but don't expect anything more than the title says. There are 61 black and white pictures of picasso lithographs with VERY LITTLE information on each piece. I thought that this book was going to concentrate on one specific run of lithographs but it is just a hodge podge or pics.
