Book Description
From Adam Smith to the present day, economic theory has shortchanged the workers most crucial to the functioning of human life and offered skewed views of scarcity and extraction. Perelman shows how this approach has produced a discipline in which its followers' models and representations of the world around them are so removed from reality that continuing to abide by them would jeopardize both human capacities and nature itself.
Customer Reviews:
A leftist analysis of economics and the environment.......2007-01-04
As is usual with Michael Perelman's books, apparently, "The Perverse Economy" deals with two different issues at the same time. On the one hand, he discusses and criticizes the mainstream economic views related to natural resources, the ecology, and sustainability. On the other, Perelman addresses the causes of inequality and the inefficiency of markets in a simple, introductory manner, focusing in particular upon the importance of taking temporality into account, known as discounting.
The benefit of Perelman's style is that it is very easy reading. He takes the time to explain every concept, uses hardly any jargon, avoids all technical discussions, and makes extensive use of examples from history and current events. On the other hand, much of the book is not new to those who are beyond the novice stage in radical economics, and just like in "The Invention of Capitalism", his two threads of thought are never really woven together. Both issues are explained in a succinct and accessible manner by Perelman, but their connection is not made clear, and he could have worked both out to a separate book on their own instead.
Nevertheless, this book serves as a good popular introduction to the problems associated with market economies, and is useful for those with little knowledge of economics or (radical) history.

Book Description
The Reengineering Revolution reviews the significance of the Business Process Reengineering trend for management practice since the early 1990's.
Combining empirical and theoretical perspectives, David Knights
and
Hugh Willmott show how both term and practice shaped the recent widely adopted policies of `downsizing', restructuring and emphasis on `process' rather than task.
Well-known contributors analyze the impact of Business Process Reengineering in a number of settings: supermarkets and the food chain; the public sector; banks.
The theoretical history of Business Process Reengineering is also detailed in relation to ideas about bureaucracy, hierarchy, transformation and design.

Book Description
Food, Climate, and Carbon Dioxide presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date discussion on the effects of the rising level of atmospheric carbon dioxide on crop production and plant growth. The emphasis is global. It examines crops of economic value, with special attention to the food crops that stand between people and starvation. The author has brought together his knowledge and 50 years of experience dealing with global food production problems, coupled with and a background of his own premier research on the positive effects of elevated levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide on plant growth and crop productivity. Topics addressed include the climate as a resource in food production and climatic impacts and direct effects from rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide on crops. The book provides global and regional projections of a CO2 -induced climate change and food production. Food security is discussed and future possibilities for research are presented. Suitable as a text and invaluable as a reference, it presents the latest developments drawn from a wide scientific community and uses language and terminology appropriate for a diverse audience.
Customer Reviews:
"The greening of planet earth" is real........1998-09-24
Dr. Wittwer is the "godfather" of the greening of planet earth hypothesis, that is, increasing carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are an environmental benefit because of their impact on plant life. His research review is an antidote to fear of catastrophic changes in climate brought on by humankind's CO2 emissions.
It is in vogue to refer to carbon dioxide as a pollutant because it is the inevitable consequence of carbon (fossil fuel, wood, peat) combustion. Dr. Wittwer correctly observes that it is the elixir of life on earth and a universally-free premium because of its stimulation of plant growth, its contribution to water-use efficiency in plants, and the way in which it helps plants resist a variety of environmental stresses. This aspect of the climate change debate has been for too long ignored, overlooked or denigrated.
Thoughtful readers will find the research reviewed by Dr. Wittwer to be extremely compelling. He anticipates his skeptics and makes an overwhelming case firmly rooted in empirical research carried on throughout the world.

For college instructors, students, people in the nursing/allied health field, or anyone interested in human anatomy.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for undergrads.......2007-08-30
Took a physio course and this was required. I aced that class by reading this book very carefully. The writing is not terribly dry like some textbooks, although don't expect anything thrilling either! The graphics, I thought, were what really helped me understand the steps and processes. Therefore, if you're truly a graphic learner, I'd recommend this. If I had to make a complaint, it'd be that the author and editors should add more pictures. Also, this is most likely for undergrads/ beginners...not health professional students.
Vander's text is better.......2005-07-22
This book was required in a general physiology course I took because the teacher was the author. I had previously taken a human physiology course which used Vander's text. Vander's illustrations and explanations were much more helpful, especially on the difficult topic of cardiac physiology.
Best Physiology Book on the Market.......2005-04-15
It is clear that Silverthorn wrote this book with the physiology student in mind. It is evident that the purpose of the book is to help teach all that physiology embodies; not simply be a reference for factoids.

Customer Reviews:
Some good and some very bad information........2003-06-17
This book is good as a very basic introduction to Box Turtles and Tortoises. The pictures are good and some of the advice on certain species is worth while.
However, there is some very bad information included. As anexample, increasing the humidity for a Star Tortoise. This advice will secure large vet bills for you from the respiratory issues your Star will certainly develop. Another is keepng your tortoise in a glass aquarium or glass sided enclosure.
I doubt the auther has any real-life experience with many of the tortoise species he mentions in this book. If he did, most will be quite ill or no longer with us.
Attractive.......2002-05-15
This book is really good for beginner. The high quality picture significantly pushing to own a tortoise.
Clear and straightforward presentation for easy understand, although your are very beginner, you can successfully get the basic knowledge.
However, you cannot find detail information in this book because it gives general information only. Actually, if you already feed your tortoise more than half year, then this book is not suitable to you.

A turtle book apparently by a turtle enthusiast.......2001-11-29
I've read a lot of turtle care books, and this is one of my faves! It's very colorful and entertaining. The author knows his subject and is passionate about it. The guide to reading a turtle's body language was really unique. It was like someone else finally realized there was so much more to keeping turtles as pets. :)
This inexpensive book is informative and enjoyable........2000-03-31
An illustration is worth a thousand words and the combination of pictures, illustrations and practical knowledge makes this an excellent book for both the new pet owner and serious hobbyists.
I recommend books to new pet owners on a regular basis at our web site. Hartmut Wilke's books are amoung our favorite suggested references for general care. This book is no exception.
Book Description
The N. American box turtles are some of the most beautiful turtles in the world. Unfortunately most pet box turtles die because owners are uniformed of their particular requirements. This highly praised manual addresses providing the proper husbandry conditions, feeding and breeding. Roger Klingenberg DVM covers the diseases and disorders of this species in great detail. A book that has saved thousands of lives.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent source of info.......2007-06-02
IMO, every owner of a box turt should have this book in their home. excellent source of information that goes beyond basic care. it includes a well organized section on common ailments and their treatments.
Do buy!
Great Book for New Turtle Owners.......2007-04-14
I purchased this book because my new box turtle, who seemed very lively in the pet store just would not eat. I'd done a great deal of research on what they like to eat on the internet, but thought perhaps he was sick. This book was very detailed, and wonderful at addressing my concerns with all the aspects of why he may not have been eating. While I don't agree with all the things the book says (Like turtles should be seen and not interacted with) Its a very good book for diagnosis of problems.
a little preachy.......2003-07-30
This book while informative was a little disappointing in other ways, such as its tone etc. Still a solid reference, and a good way to learn about how to take care of your pet.
Perfect, wish I had it sooner.......2003-04-19
My son had a wood turtle who was experiencing some problems with his eyes. Finally bought this book, but the turtle died before I got the book. The book is very good and has a lot of good information for us people who don't know much about turtles. Wish I would have gotten the book a little sooner and realized what the problem really was.
NO Boxie owner should be without!!.......2003-03-12
This book is awesome! Everything that keepers need can be found here in this easy to read, straight to the point book. If you have, or are considering a pet Box turtle you need this book!!

Customer Reviews:
Great book for those with experience!.......2007-05-13
Lots of info here in this book. Well worth the price and in my opinion better info the Togakure stuff. Mainly because it is so down to earth. Covers a lot of areas of training. Many charts and photos as well. But a warning to those who buy this book, it was written as a guide for Sensei Dallas students so if you have "not" trained in this system or have prior martial training , the info may be hard to decipher. But it is well recommended to anyone interested in a very unique style of ninjutsu.
Poorly Written.......2007-01-09
First of all, putting aside the questionable history of this art (any quick search of the internet will uncover horror stories), this book costs a lot, but returns so little. The martial techniques demonstrated are sometimes laughable (come on, spinning a staff above your head will make you float in the air like a helicopter?? What kind of moron would actually believe this?) Even though the author apparently spent a lot of time photographing techniques, it appears that the book was an after thought. The printed copy still contains hypertext links within ("click here to watch video" in a book?!?!?). The Japanese translations are laughable. However the best (or worst part) would be the survival techniques. They are not just pitiful, but incredibly dangerous for anyone to even think of attempting.
The illustrations are abysmal. You would expect that for the price of this book, the author would have gotten a professional illustrator... or even a person who can draw past the stage of stick figures.
On a good note, the author appears to have put in a lot of time. Mostly in photographing the techniques. It is about the best thing that I can say about the book.
The bottom line, there are better books on the martial arts in general, and ninjutsu in particular than this. You would best be served by looking else where.
The best Martial Arts Book.......2006-07-21
This edition of the konigun manual is by far the best. The techniques are practical and detailed. The pictures as well as the step by step discription of each move make it easier to practice the move. I would also recommend the cd-rom manual which enhances the printed copy by allowing you to view how the techniques are preformed in real time. These two items will help prepare anyone interested in defending themselves and dealing with the inevidable challenges life will throw at them.
The Best Book I Own........2006-07-21
This is by far the most in depth book on any Martial Art that I have ever come across in my life. Dr. Dallas is a genius, The proof is in his book and it not only shows techniques but also breaks down on how they are used. No other M.A. book comes even close to the material that he has put in to this book. Not to mention the book also has Pictures to go along with the techniques as well. So if there's any other Book out there that can top this one on not only History, the Math and the Science the please step up and prove it.
best training manuel ive ever read.......2006-07-21
This manuel is the most comprehensive break down of techniques I've ever seen. Would most definitly like to study under the gentleman that wrote it. I believe it would enhance the knowledge i already have and add to it. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in studying martial arts.

Grammar Games enables teachers to integrate grammar practice into their classes in novel and motivating ways.
Customer Reviews:
Great help.......2007-09-27
This book helped me with my classes. It's been great to find a book with such good games and ideas to make students understand grammar without bored classes. Excelent way of learning! Fun and interesting.
Endlessly useful.......2007-06-12
"Grammar Games" is a must for transforming deadly dull grammar lessons into creative and fun activities. Each activity lists the grammar structure involved, level, preparation, materials and timing. A big bonus is that the Table of Contents lists the grammar point as well as the name of the activity--far too many other resources only give you the name of the activity, which makes it impossible to find anything easily. A great resource!
Creative and a good foundation.......2001-11-14
Provides various activities that teach many aspects of English as well as grammar points using communicative methodology. These activities are creative and helpful. What is so useful is that these activities can be modified/altered to suit your class level. Some of the expressions and topics are a little strange and not really suitable to use in class for young learners who are at beginning level. But of course you can alter them. I have been able to make up many of my own lesson ideas from this book, written by ESL teaching veterans. "Grammar Games" is very helpful. I also recommend "More Grammar Games" which is a part-two, or addition to this book.
And now for something completely different..........2001-06-19
Grammar Games contains fifty-six language learning activities divided into five sections; competitive games, collaborative sentence-making games, awareness activities, grammar through drama, and miscellany. About one fifth of the games deal directly with grammatical accuracy by exposing students to correct or incorrect sentences, with a caveat from the author urging us to accept that students who are highly focused will not imprint the wrong sentences that the theories of Skinner or Krashen may suggest. I can't say for sure whether incorrect grammar will be unconsciously learned or not, but it is clear that not everyone will be interested in these kind of activities anyway. I was therefore pleased that the rest of the book covered material that would appeal to many different types of learner, not just the analytically inclined. Grammar Games has a distinctly British, slightly seventies, and somewhat eccentric feel to it. We can learn by being physically active, or by being silent and reflective. There are board games and gambling games. You can vote for the best, play snap, take part in an auction, or do back-writing. You can even brainstorm why two people would want to exchange socks on a train - not everyone's cup of tea, perhaps. I enjoyed reading Grammar Games because most of the activities looked interesting and highly original, and that there were many that I would like to try out with my students, someday. For the EFL teacher searching for new ideas on how to teach grammar while having fun, whether you are experienced or novice, I recommend that you take a look at Mario Rinvolucri's Grammar Games.
Wow- implicit grammar instruction that's cool!.......2001-05-16
This book was recommended to me by a professsor who had used it with her Middle School ESL kids. After having it a week, I have to say it is fabulous. I had been looking for ways to teach grammar to my junior high kids, without tedious explanations of grammatical rules, worksheets or diagramming. The day after I received it, I was able to start the kids on a game where they could internalize grammatical rules, and demonstrate what they already understood about the deep structure of English. The only preparation required was writing a sentence on the board, and they were involved for twenty minutes. The only reservation I have in recommending this book is that it is British, and intended for adult learners. I have had to adapt some of the language to make it easier for my kids to understand.

Designed by Kiyoshi Takahashi, these copyright-free motifs will add a delicate touch to ads, newsletters, posters, scrolls, certificates and more.
Customer Reviews:
Same content as Ready-to-Use Calligraphic Ornaments By Takahashi (Dover).......2006-02-17
Buyers shoud be aware that this book has the same content as an earlier Dover book,Ready-to-Use Calligraphic Ornaments by Kiyoshi Takahashi. This is better becuase it comes with a CD, but it is the same collection of images.
The .eps format dissapointed me...like other reviewers, I was hoping vor vector based images. I did have good results with Illustrator CS2's live trace tool. I turned the images into plain linework, then added the thick/thin look of calligraphy by applying Illustrator's calligraphic brushes. A bit if work, but the results are nice.
No Vector But Great When Converted.......2004-12-15
I must say I am glad that I read the other reviews so that I was prepared when I purchased this item. It is a bit misleading that the CD contains files in EPS format because they act just like a placed image in Illustrator. HOWEVER, with a program like Adobe Streamline, the images are absolutely GORGEOUS. I highly recommend this item along with Streamline. In the end, the quality workmanship of a Dover book is found in this product.
No Vector..........2004-06-06
When i first saw this book, i was very excited because it said that i had .eps files, which to me, mean vector, easy to use etc. These files are all raster, thus if you are seeking full vector, you might need to order a copy of Adobe Streamline and covert these. Big disappointment.

I agree with the Graphic Designer from Los Angeles..........2003-01-05
And unfortunately I was looking for true clip art! However, I must say that the ornaments presented are truly stunning, and can easily be used in paper crafting of any kind. I used this book to create labels for gifts and to address holiday envelopes. I am a novice desktop publisher and was not disappointed.
Cris Cunningham
Graphic Designer in Los Angeles.......2000-12-02
The ornamentation is very nice but something anyone buying any of the Dover Electronic Clip Art series books should take into account is that they are not actual clip art items. Dover has just scanned the art and put it on a CD, the items are not scalable or changeable in a usual clip art format. It is very helpful to have the images already scanned but if you want true clip art, this book is not for you.
