Book Description
This book presents a unique analysis of the moral and social dimensions of microeconomic behavior in developing countries and calls into question standard notions of rationality and many of the assumptions of neo-classical economics, showing how these are inappropriate in communities with widespread disparity in incomes.

Book Description
Provides an excellent introductory text for students on the principles and methods of statistical analysis in the life sciences, helping them choose and analyse statistical tests for their own problems and present their findings.
An understanding of statistical principles and methods is essential for any scientist but is particularly important for those in the life sicences. The field biologist faces very particular problems and challenges with statistics as "real-life" situations such as collecting insects with a sweep net or counting seagulls on a cliff face can hardly be expected to be as reliable or controllable as a laboratory-based experiment. Acknowledging the peculiarites of field-based data and its interpretation, this book provides a superb introduction to statistical analysis helping students relate to their particular and often diverse data with confidence and ease.
To enhance the usefulness of this book, the new edition incorporates the more advanced method of multivariate analysis, introducing the nature of multivariate problems and describing the the techniques of principal components analysis, cluster analysis and discriminant analysis which are all applied to biological examples. An appendix detailing the statistical computing packages available has also been included.
It will be extremely useful to undergraduates studying ecology, biology, and earth and environmental sciences and of interest to postgraduates who are not familiar with the application of multiavirate techniques and practising field biologists working in these areas.
Customer Reviews:
essential reading for field biologists.......2007-04-02
This books is a handy little helper for basic statistics, especially if you don't work on the topic on a day-by-day basis. Every approach is exemplified; the same examples are often used for different cases, making it clear how the various tests are connected. I highly recommend this book.
Amazing!.......2006-05-05
I am a grad student working on the data analysis for my thesis and this book helped me enormously! The problem with other statistics books is that they give data sets and examples that don't relate to types of data that field biologists half to deal with. My biggest problem was figuring out what kind of statistical tests I needed to use for the kind of data that I had collected, and this book answered many of my questions in that area.
Whew!.......2003-10-05
When I found myself among seniors in one experiments in ecology class in university (I am a sophomore), I found to my dismay that others knew statistics way better than me. Although I learned probability and statistics in 10th grade, it's been 4 years since then. Therefore, I was in a despate need of a good book. I got this book along with Experimental Design for Data Analysis for Biologists, but I liked this book way better. It's more easy to read (perfect for busy students), has a couple of useful examples, and it's helping me a lot!
Consice and well written review of field biology statistics.......2002-10-16
As a graduate student doing field biology, I found this book to be very usefull. It is a great refresher for those who have had a biometrics course before, and I will be using it as quick reference for a long time. It is much easier to read then other biometrics books. Great buy!

Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming Developing Root .......2007-03-02
Root:
1. Being rooted means to be stable and in firm contact with the ground
2. You must be centered (focusing the mind on the center), settled, and relaxed. "Since your body isn't struggling to stand up, your Yi (mind) won't be pushing upward, and your body, mind, and chi will be able to sink."
3. Yi leads the chi. Chi can not be pushed or forced, it must be lead by the Yi. To lead the chi to the feet, the mind must first focus on the center. "Only when your Yi can communicate with the ground will your Chi be able to grow beyond your feet and enter the ground to build root." The bubbling well cavity is the gate which enables your chi tto communicate with the ground.
4. A stable center will make your chi develop evenly and uniformly. "In order to keep your body centered, you must first center your Yi, and then match your body to it." Your mental and physical center is the key which enables you to lead your chi beyond your body.
5. Balance your Yi. "If your Yi is balanced, it can help you to make accurate judgements, and therefore to correct the path of Chi flow.
6. Moving chi to your palms: Image you are pushing and object forward while keeping your muscles relaxed.
What is Chi?
1. Chi is the energy or natural force which fills the universe. Three types exist: Heavan Chi, Earth Chi, and Human Chi. Earth Chi absorbs Heavan Chi. When chi or energy field loses it balance, it strives to rebalance itself. Heavan Chi affects Human Chi, flowing from the crown of the head through the energy meridians. When chi is flowing into the Dan Tien, the second mind activates.
2. Concentrate on Chi and achieve softness. (Lao Tzyy) "The men of old breathed clear down to their heels." Breathing is used to increase chi circulation.
3. Muscle/Tendon Changing classic taught the priests how to gain health and change their physical bodies from weak to strong: clean the bone marrow, strengthen blood and immune, and energize the brain.
4. The masters discovered specific body movements could increase chi flow to specific organs of the body: Tai Chi Chuan form, five animal postures, and Tai chi chi kung forms. Other Kungfu styles emerged: Wai Dan, Iron Shirt, Golden Bell Cover, Wai Kung, and Ying Kung.
5. Chi in your body is divided into two categories: Managing Chi and Guardian chi. The managing chi is hte energy which has been sent to the organs so that they can function. The guardian chi is the energy which has been sent to the surface of the body to form a shield to protect you from the negative outside influences such as cold.
6. Yin is the root and source of life which animates the Yang body and manifest power or strength externally.
7. Chi circulation and chi storage: a. there are twelve channels that circulate chi through out the body b. there are eight vessels or regions that make up the energy reserviors. When the eight reserviors are full the chi circulation is strong. Every channel has a certain chi flow strength and changes throughout the day. Chi sources are: natural energy (sun, moon, earth), food and air, thinking, and exercise.
8. When your chi is full, your Shen (spirit) will be enlivened. Chi flows to the brain and energizes the shen and soul. The Energizing and the raise Shen will lead the chi through the body. Shen is the control tower for your chi.
9. The earth chi is negative (Yin) energy from your kidneys, and the Heavan Chi is positive (Yang) energy which comes from the food you eat and the air you breath. Once you connect the two chis, you know what real chi is and this is what is meant to attain the tao.
10. Learn how to increase chi in the two main vessels - Yin conception vessel and Yang Governing vessel.
11. Learn how to raise chi to the surface of the skin and condense the chi to the bone marrow. Condensing produces jing, the secret to effortless power and distance power.
12. Wu Chi - chi in your body and the chi in nature unite and all human desires disppear.
The Chi of Tai Chi........2001-01-06
This book provides what so many books touch on, but never really go in-depth into. It provides a detailed viewpoint of the medical side of the martial arts from an Eastern viewpoint.
It talks about where Chi is generated, the medical benefits of stimulating Chi, uses, practice and so much more! The entire book is filled with page after page of knowledge. I have used this book to fill the holes in other books I've collected. I would highly recommend this book. It is very informative!
A comprehensive book on the subject of Chinese health.......1998-05-29
This book explains what tai-chi hopes to accomplish and a complete description of Chi-kung's origins. It is not for those who are only lightly interested in Tai chi... this book covers a lot of ground. It gives the english and chinese terms for those who wish to learn everything they can about this ancient art. It is deticated to explaining it's health benifits, origins and chi-kung's influence on the body and mind (along with man's place with heaven and earth). Even to those who never plan on taking tai chi, the book covers a bit of oriental philosophy, kung-fu and how to focus chi-power for better living. This book is worth every cent, and more!

Though bits and pieces are somewhat outdated ("backspace 10 characters for right-hand margin," a chapter on getting published recommends), this is a fine and quite British introduction to the art of writing and illustrating children's books. Nine writers, illustrators, editors, librarians, and educators present a chapter or two each on such subjects as storytelling, classic children's fiction, contemporary themes in children's literature, illustration, and production. The format doesn't allow much of a chance for any one aspect of the business of children's books to be explored deeply, but the authors' strong affinity for children and their literature will help any potential children's-book creator adopt the right frame of mind for the work. Authors of children's books, says Gabrielle Maunder, must not underestimate the intelligence of their readers. And illustrators, says Catherine Storr, should do more than simply add pictures to the text; "the illustrator all writers long to meet," she says, "is the one who can take the text and, without radically changing it ... enormously enrich it." Most important, agree all the contributors here, is the need for authors and illustrators alike to understand the mind of the child. Getting published and sold is one thing, says illustrator (and writer) Celia Berridge; but true success "is knowing that your book really works for children." --Jane Steinberg
Customer Reviews:
Nice book.......2006-07-18
Good book for those wishing to know more about the field or not knowing where to start. When you get serious, you'll want to read some additional books on working with the publishing world. From what I've understood, very few agents will touch children's books. So, you'll likely be going it alone up until you really get established, if you do. That means you will be working directly with the publisher/editor yourself. As a result, you will need more information under your belt about the publishing world than what this book contains, but this is an excellent source to learn about everything else. It does include some starter info about the publishing end of things.
Very useful information.......2004-05-20
I found this book to be very useful as a source for writing better children's books. It includes specific style and writing techniques with examples to teach us to make a more powerful manuscript. I wish there were more books like this with even more ideas!
Good Start for Illustrators.......2003-09-14
Treld Pelkey Bicknell's 'How to Write and Illustrate Children's Books' is really more for illustrators of children's books then the writer's aspect of the book. It's a good source for that particular purpose. If you want a more indepth instruction on the children's book writing process I suggest Barbara Seuling's 'How to Write a Children's Book and Get It Published.' Bicknell's book is valuable for it's comprehensive topics and illustrations. The first part include topics of constructing a story from beginning to end (planning and plotting, story structure, dialogue). There's a section on getting to know your reader and choosing the right words. Plus other informative information like looking into the world of children and the influence of new writing. The second part is devoted to illustration and discusses getting to know your audience, the types of picture books (board, pop-ups, zig-zag, flap, half-flap, holes, pictorial consequences, long text, minimal text, wordless, picture strips). It combines pictures with interpeting a text and using your imagination. Building the porfolio follows in the creation process. The last part is devoted to getting published. Starting from making the book, preparing the roughs, the right style for the right job. The author tops it off with factual writing and researching, Fad & Novelty books and finding the right publisher. To find what's in the market I also suggest the 'Children's Book Writer and Illustrator's Market Book' as a directory in that field to find the right genre of which publisher to contact. This book is a handy source like the other two I mentioned.
Helpful to illustrators.......2001-08-18
As a published children's book author and illustrator, I found this book to be one of the more helpful guides for those interested in children's illustration. Most books in the "How to Write Children's Books" genre focus on the writer's perspective and neglect the illustrator. This book, with contributions by an Art Director, also addresses portfolio presentation, picture book layout, style, dummies, tearsheets and roughs. True, the book is somewhat dated and there are more comprehensive books on children's book publishing. However, I would highly recommend this book to fellow illustrators.
