Book Description
The rise and decline of American civic life has provoked wide-ranging responses from all quarters of society. Unfortunately, many proposals for improving our communities rely on renewed governmental efforts without a similar recognition that the inflexibility and poor accountability of governments have often worsened society's ills. The Voluntary City investigates the history of large-scale, private provision of social services, the for-profit provision of urban infrastructure and community governance, and the growing privatization of residential life in the United States to argue that most decentralized, competitive markets can contribute greatly to community renewal.
Among the fascinating topics covered are: how mutual-aid societies in America, Great Britain, and Australia provided their members with medical care, unemployment insurance, sickness insurance, and other social services before the welfare state; how private law, known historically as the law merchant, is returning in the form of arbitration; and why the rise of neighborhood associations represents the most comprehensive privatization occurring in the United States today.
The volume concludes with an epilogue that places the discoveries of The Voluntary City within the theory of market and government failure and discusses the implications of these discoveries for theories about the private provision of public goods. A refreshing challenge to the position that insists government alone can improve community life, The Voluntary City will be of special interest to students of history, law, urban life, economics, and government.
David T. Beito is Associate Professor of History, University of Alabama. Peter Gordon is Professor in the School of Policy, Planning, and Development and Department of Economics, University of Southern California. Alexander Tabarrok is Vice President and Research Director, the Independent Institute.

A Vindication of Anarcho-Capitalsm.......2005-03-20
Back in the mid to late 90's I had the pleasure of reading a new version of a book written by David Friedman called "The Machinery of Freedom" which was originally published in the 1970's. Friedman's book introduced me to anarcho-capitalist ideas and now, years later, thanks to David T. Beito and the Independent Institute "The Voluntary City" is published that confirms many of the thoughts and ideas Friedman wrote about in his treatsie. This book is a collection of policy pieces done by different authors that detail specific, real-life examples of free market alternatives to things like court systems and litigation, education, police, housing and welfare. Most of whom were provided by insurance plans people paid for on their own via insurance companies or by private, charitable organizations people belonged to while governments, by and large, stayed out of the way. One aspect of the book that was not pointed out was private fire departments. Prior to being run by governments, many fire departments were also privately run in which their funding came from insurance plans they particpated in that provided fire protection for their customers. It wasn't until after the civil war that municipalities started acquiring and operating them. Even today, governments are beginning to privatize or not provide many essentials since they are too costly to run. For example, in Arizona, Rural Metro Corporation has contracts to provide fire and ambulatory service for cities (like mine) and even counties that do not or cannot afford to provide it. Despite this one subject left out, I felt this book was very well done and I heartily recommend it to people who have doubts about anarcho-capitalist ideas or people who are looking for new, radical ideas to replace the monopolies governments have on services they presently provide.
You aren't the only one who wonders..........2004-05-13
You're not the only one that wonders whether the government that is supposed to guarantee your private property rights seems more interested in making sure your vinyl siding runs the same way as your neighbor's. This is the way of things in America today, where municipal governments segregate business from housing, then wonder why everyone thinks he has to own a car.
Enter the Voluntary City, a cogent and realistic analysis of how we got here, and whether we have actually improved things in doing it. There used to be sufficient housing (try to find the word "homeless" before the Carter presidency), and police that actually had to catch the bad guys (read about one police force that had a catch rate of over 90%), and the reasonable expectation that if you wanted to alter your property you could do so without groveling to the city fathers. We gave these things up in the hope that what we would get back would be better. But is it? Really?
You aren't the only one that wonders. This excellent book provides some answers to the question, and the impetus to take those answers out into the political world. We're doing it where I am.

Book Description
Molecular biology is a fast-paced field that constantly provides new insights into the living world and the role of humans within it. Students and professionals need a clear understanding of new discoveries and applications, as well as a firm grasp of the fundmental concepts. Clark's
Molecular Biology: Understanding the Genetic Revolution gives readers what they need in both regards.
Clark effectively introduces basic concepts followed by more specific applications as the text evolves. He has included research results as current as late 2004 when the gene count for humans was officially changed, and takes a thorough look at the medical, agricultural, and social aspects that shape modern-day molecular biology. This text is written in a straightforward manner and beautifully illustrated in full color.
Molecular Biology covers a deliberately broad range of topics to show that molecular biology is not applicable merely to human medicine and health, but also applies to veterinary medicine, evolution, agriculture, and other areas.
* Up to date description of genetic engineering, genomics, and related areas
* Basic concepts followed by more detailed, specific applications
* Hundreds of color illustrations enhance key topics and concepts
* Covers medical, agricultural, and social aspects of molecular biology
* Organized pedagogy includes running glossaries and keynotes (mini-summaries) to hasten comprehension
Book Description

Marty Crump, adjunct professor of biology at Northern Arizona University and conservation fellow of the Wildlife Conservation Society, has tromped through many a rain forest and hunkered in many a swamp during her 31 years of herpetological field research. In her travels through Ecuador, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Brazil, she's studied harlequin frogs, golden toads, and predaceous tadpoles; encountered conga ants, electric eels, and bushmaster vipers; and dined on rat, parrot, and guinea pig. Her memoir, begun as a gift for her children, is now a treat for anyone with a taste for travel, nature, and a story well told.
Crump's tone is always friendly, never pompous, and the vivid details provide for the best sort of armchair travel, where you can almost (but happily, not quite) feel the oppressive humidity, taste the decayed banana wine, and smell the fetid vegetation, while picturing the astonishing glories of "over one hundred Day-Glo golden orange toads poised like statues, dazzling jewels against the dark brown mud."
She juggled the rigors of fieldwork with the demands of motherhood, learning to express milk for her 6-week-old infant Karen while hiking in the rain to study frogs in the lush mountains of Costa Rica. Her field experience has certainly contributed to her herpetological expertise (not for nothing was she honored with the Distinguished Herpetologist Award), but it has also created a bountiful supply of exceptional travel stories. Crump has combined her choicest stories with ample herpetological annotation, creating a unique collection of travel tales liberally spiced with naturalist lore. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
Marty Crump has searched for salamanders along the Amazon River; she has surveyed amphibians and reptiles in hostile Huaorani Indian territory; she has been stung by a conga ant and had run-ins with an electric eel, a boa constrictor, and a bushmaster viper. In the course of her travels she has dined, not always eagerly, on wild rat, parrot, guinea pig, and chicken foot soup. And for those among us who prefer our experiences to be vicarious and far away from biting insects, venomous snakes, and inhospitable surroundings, she has written In Search of the Golden Frog.
The book is a detailed and fascinating chronicle of Crump's adventures as a field biologist—and as a wife and mother—in South and Central America. Following Crump on her research trips through Costa Rica, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, we learn of amazingly diverse landscapes, equally diverse national traditions and customs, and the natural history of her subject of study, the frog. In leading us through rain forests and onto windswept coasts, Crump introduces us to such compelling creatures as female harlequin frogs, who pounce on males and pound their heads against the ground, and also sounds an alarm about the precipitous decline in amphibian populations around the globe.
Crump's perspectives as both a scientist and a mother, juggling the demands of family and professional life, make this highly readable account of fieldwork simultaneously close to home and wildly exotic. A combination of nature writing and travel writing, the richly illustrated In Search of the Golden Frog will whet travelers' appetites, affirm the experiences of seasoned field biologists, and offer the armchair naturalist vivid descriptions of amphibians and their habitats.

Excellent Biological Tourism!.......2004-05-17
This book was great if you are interested in exploring the tropics through the eye of an academic. It was interesting to see how the world of academia has changed since Crump was a graduate student.
I liked this book because Crump teaches interested tidbits about the life of amphibians and tropical ecology interwoven with her stories of fieldwork. It was great to learn how Crump deals with the challenges of motherhood and fieldwork at the same time.
I thought everything about this book was great, but could see how some might think this book is a little dry if you aren't into biology. Other than that, the only reason this book did not receive 5 stars is because the ending just sorta leaves the reader with a giant question mark.

Mire through the Muck with Marty Crump.......2000-09-26
This is my pick for favorite nature/travelogue of the year. As a cube dwelling computer jockey who enjoys getting out in the field whenever possible, I was able to savor the excitement of field herpetology in the verdant green and brown neotropics with Dr. Crump. After reading "In Search of the Golden Frog", I want to go a froggin', I want to lift a log, I want to wallow in a bog, and most of all, I want to help conserve the wonders of the amphibian world. Dr. Crump's autobiography supplies the reader with an entertaining account of adventures in the field while encouraging involvement in preserving both local and global eco-systems which sustain these veritable princes of herpetofauna. Read it, enjoy it, and help preserve it !!
My search for the golden frog.......2000-09-08
After having finished reading "In Search of the Golden Frog" by Martha Crump one will realize the opportunities that arise from extensive field work and hard work. This well written journal like story covering a period of 30 or so years of Martha's life describes her early experiences as a young undergrad student working in the tropics to a highly recognized researcher with a family. Martha's great interest and enjoyment in field work and discovery is so apparent in her tales, I couldn't put the book down until I found out what she was doing to this present day. One who has shared similar field experiences will find the detailed descriptions uniquely parallel to that of their own stories. Martha tells of a journey that has lead her to many interesting discoveries but only through time, patience and the desire to handle the difficulties of field work. Martha tells of the troubles and treasurable memories of travelling throughout both Central and South America in search of the creatures she finds most fascinating. Fortunately, in her journey she has also unfolded the nessesity to concentrate on the declining numbers of certain amphibian species. I recommend the book to any individual interested in field work and conservation. The book shares true experiences any field biologist will someday fall upon, preparing those willing to follow in Martha's footsteps.

A good activity book for children........2004-10-22
This book is a reprint of a 1929 publication. As such, some of the construction techniques, particularly the making of glue and paste, will be "unexpectedly practical" for many modern readers.
These kite designs work as well today as they did in 1929. Substituting modern materials like Tyvek house wrap and packing tape make these designs stronger and quite a bit easier to build.
This is a good activity book for parents and children.

If a native Spanish-speaker were to say to you, "You're taking my hair!" (¡Me estás tomando el pelo!), you may not know how to respond
unless, of course, you've read David Burke's newest book on Spanish idioms, Street Spanish 2. Then you'd know that this common expression is equivalent to the American idiom, "You're pulling my leg!" Street Spanish 2 will lead you through an exciting domain of imaginative and popular Spanish idioms by the use of dialogues, vocabulary lessons, entertaining word drills and games including crossword puzzles, fill-ins, find-a-word charts, and dictations. A comprehensive glossary rounds out this fact- and fun-filled guide.
Customer Reviews:
Useful, but errors.......2006-03-13
This is a good book for learning street Spanish. It is nice to have 2 translations, both literal and the actual english. But I was surprised at how many translation errors there were. On numerous occassions, the english translation is incorrect. One would figure they would get a better editor.
Idioms and more idioms.......2004-01-23
This book should be part of a student's essential reference material collection. Idioms are difficult to grasp in any language and Spanish is no exception. This resource has many of the most commonly heard idioms in day to day speech and those learning Spanish must eventually learn the meaning and use them when speaking Spanish. Understanding and learning fixed expressions authenticates one's usage of the language and brings an individual one step closer to native competency. I seriously recommend this resource for Beginners and Intermediate level students. For advance speakers I think a more challenging resource would be more beneficial to their development in the language. I recommend the McGraw-hill Diccionario del Argot: El Sohez for advance level students.
wonderful.......2001-08-30
This book is so important to the field of Spanish education that I'd recommend it to anyone attempting to develop fluency in Spanish. Business people, doctors, teachers, or travelers can all benefit from this book. As a teacher of Spanish, I've observed that one of the most difficult challenges for students is making sense of the idioms. This book is the ultimate remedy! It provides clear, concise definitions and examples that will ultimately make the difference between being good and being fluent.
The best book on Spanish idioms I have seen.......2001-02-17
Idiomatic structures are often difficult to translate, so a student of Spanish will usually attempt to interpret an idiom in a literal sense by translating the words separately instead of as a single unit, since without special training it is not easy to recognise a Spanish idiom when it crops up, consequently leading to erroneous, nonsensical renditions. However, Street Spanish 2 bridges that gap by providing the necessary tools to deal with this problem efficiently, showing how to avoid those embarrassing situations.
This self-study guide contains an abundance of universally popular idioms compacted into each chapter, which represent what you would normally learn if you were living in a Spanish speaking country for a number of years trying to cope with the finer intricacies and colloquial expressions that form the backbone of everyday spoken Spanish.
Each of the 10 chapters includes about 20 or more idioms in every dialogue, providing a challenge that compels you to examine the imaginative and expressive techniques used to communicate ideas and thoughts effectively. To be truly proficient in this language it is not only necessary to recognise idioms, but to have a clear understanding of their usage also, as these structures are widely utilized in movies, magazines and by native speakers. The course material is designed to allow the student to acquire this vital knowledge quickly, since it provides the key that unlocks the mystery behind mastering street Spanish successfully. I would therefore recommend this book to anyone desirous of expanding their knowledge of this popular language.
(Having the cassettes, which are not part of the package, would be an added bonus since you would hear the dialogues being spoken by natives of Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico and Colombia, providing a better feel for the language, its speech patterns and the varying pronunciations).
A language student essential!.......1999-11-05
After years of looking for a book with spanish slang with no limitations, I have found it! After picking up the basics back in Spain, I wanted to know more, and nearly drove myself crazy looking for a book on it! It has some great illustrations, has practically all the slang you could need, rude or not, and has all the spanish variations such as Cuban, Chilean, Argentinian etc. For me, I think it's brill! But then again, I'm an enthusiast, and after all this time....I've found it. Even so, it's good for a giggle, good for a reference, and for using against your non-spanish speaking mates!

Your graphic design career SAVED! By durable, genious little IdeaFactory.......2007-04-12
You may be a design superstar, but you need this. If not now, you will eventually and it will be at 2am in the morning and 4 Red Bulls shy of an 8am deadline when you realize you should have had it, while all the local bookstores are closed and the one person awake that you know owns it lives one hour away, but your car is out of gas due to the money you're not making from the ideas you're not creating from the Idea Index you don't own and anyone else you think may own it is sleeping or competing for the same work and laughing at your naivety because they know they are going to win the job and raise their arms in ecstatic passion, kissing the boss's butt and laughing with an evil smiling scowl in a moment of unfair glory you are not a part of. Invest in saving your tail from that moment.
The greatest designers and artists will tell you they don't always just "make it appear", but go to other sources for inspiration. Even if you don't think you need it, you need it just to give you a fresh perspective at times.
I can't tell you the number of times this little idea factory will save your tail during a mind block! It has saved me many times and probably has resulted in thousands of dollars worth of design work won due to the ideas generated from it during a blank out. Just that alone should be enough to convince you to get it.
This durable, vinyl covered gemlette is geared toward graphic design folks and is divided into two sections:
1. Graphic Effects:
2. Typographic Treatments
What I really like about the Idea Index is that amongst its 300+ ideas, you will find multiple versions of each individual idea per page, not just one little instance. Also, the ideas use varying techniques, not just what the author may be predisposed to. The ideas are indeed simple in many cases and that is enough to spark that one little idea that will build and build, compounding the ideas until you have just thrown your hands over your head in ecstatic excitement over the design award you just won, after making all that money from that job you wrested from the hands of the other guy 4 Red Bulls shy of an 8am meeting at 2am who doesn't own this book. Uhh . . .
Save yourself the drama. Just get it, my brain hurts . . . from all the ideas this book creates.
Great pocket guide........2007-03-14
This is a great little source of ideas to keep in your back pocket. It is good to flip through when you need to work past a creative blcok.
Jog 'yer brain........2007-01-21
I was happy to find this little book. It has two main sections, one for graphics and one for type treatments. In each section are several ideas explained in both words and visuals. There isn't anything ground breaking here. But it's awesome because there are so many ideas and approaches tightly packed in a small book. So when my brain is dead and and I need to pull out of my tunnel vision...it's there for me.
Wonderful resource!.......2006-12-20
Sometimes I find myself a little stuck on projects but flipping through this book always gets me back on track. Just as he says it is useful tool to "get ideas stirring or later on, expand a page or two of thumbnail sketches." The graphical examples used in the book aren't finished, polished pieces but they are great illustrations of how to expand your ideas and speed the creative process.
One of the greatest books for logo design.......2006-05-16
Another book that is definately a "must buy", especially if you're a logo designer.Funny thing is, the publisher has released another book that is especially focused on logos named "logo index" but i find this "idea index" to be a hundred times more useful when it comes to logos.
So what kind of book exactly is it ?
It's a book about design principles. In other words, the book consists of hundreds of instructions, guides and examples of ways to apply certain design principles.Every principle is illustrated with one or more examples, most of them being logos. While many of the principles do not reinvent the wheel, it's *the* book to have handy when having a "designer's block" staring at a white sheet of paper not knowing where to begin or just when you're looking for ideas to start.
What makes this book so much more valuable than any of these logo collection books is that its focus is on principles, not nice logo examples only.In other words, this book helps you to develop your *own* ideas instead of seduce you into copying a logo you found in one of the collection books.
It also does apply for not only logos but anything where good graphic design principles are asked for. It's a real workbook just as Cabarga's book "Logo Font & Lettering Bible" is (which i highly recommend as well) and i would not want to be without it.
