Book Description
The way in which regulation works is a key concern of industries, consumers, citizens, and governments alike. Understanding Regulation takes the reader through the central issues of regulation and discusses these from a number of disciplinary perspectives. This book is written by a lawyer and an economist, but looks also towards business, political science, sociology, social administration, anthropology, and other disciplines. The fundamental strategies, institutions, and explanations of regulation are reviewed and the means of identifying `good' regulation are outlined. Individual chapters look at such topics as self-regulation, the regulation of risks, the cost-benefit testing of regulation, the importance of enforcement, and the challenge of regulating within Europe. The book's second part considers a series of issues of particular concern in modern utilities regulation, including the use of RPI-X price caps, the control of service quality, franchising techniques and ways of measuring regulatory performance. Questions of accountability and procedure are then examined and recent public debates on regulatory reform are reviewed. A central argument of Understanding Regulation is that regulation inevitably gives rise to political contention but that persons of different political persuasion can nevertheless converse sensibly on the search for better regulation.

In Survival Is Not Enough, former Yahoo executive and author of Permission Marketing Seth Godin turns his attention to the predominant issue facing all business today: change. Godin takes the perspective of an evolutionary biologist, borrowing ideas from the likes of Richard Dawkins, Jared Diamond, and Matt Ridley to formulate his own prescription for business survival, a concept he calls "zooming," which he defines as "stretching your limits without threatening your foundation." The result is a wide-ranging and eclectic menu of useful ideas that just about anyone looking to enhance their career, job satisfaction, and their company's prospects would do well to consider. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
You can't embrace change any faster...can't make time for the synergy training workshop...can't deal with one more change management seminar. So stop changing. Evolve.
Evolution can be unleashed in your organization, effortlessly and gradually changing everything in its path. By teaching your company to "zoom" -- embrace change without pain -- you'll have a company that evolves and ultimately attracts people who drive it to evolve even faster.
In up or down markets, for companies in any industry, embrace the organic approach detailed in Survival Is Not Enough and you will always outperform the competition.
Here's practical advice on how to make the chaos we all must deal with an asset, not a threat.

Think without the box.......2007-07-15
Seth Godin is the guy that think outside the box, think without the box, kicked of the box, why that box? This was the first Seth's book I read, but I follow Seth trough his blog for a time, and he point his words with precision to targets. Direct or indirectly his words come and growing answering my business, social, marketing, economics oriented mind.
Just three words resume "Survival is not enough" : mDNA, meme and zoom. Simple like that! Along the book, this three words growing and come to make meaning. Seth develop a analogy trough a evolution (Darwin's evolution) and company evolution, on the company evolution DNA was replaced by mDNA that changes faster than DNA. Don't be astonished if you read that the best sex you must do is with your boss. On that book, sex goes the meaning of natural selection, its fine, believe me.
Finally, make zoom, do it all the time, don't be worry about changes, doing the same think all the time is the more efficient way to fail your company. Don't believe on championship strategies, "feel" your customers, and let your business grow from botton to top, or from the boundaries to core.
Another wheel turner..........2006-08-29
Like all of Seth Godin's books, "Survival Is Not Enough" does a great job at helping his readers think outside the box (sounds cliche but its very true!). Much of the advice is practical and can be applied to your own business or job. Any motivational speaker or business author can easily recommend for you to embrace change or innovate or do this or do that. But Seth has a special way to tell a story (or in this case) present a theory that cuts to the bone and leaves you with a mouth watering idea that you can take with you and apply to your business or company. You might even wonder later how you survived all along without reading this book (And That's just it....you simply survived all this time, rather than evolve aka "zoom" and gain major marketshare in your respective industry or field.
ZOOM!!.......2006-08-08
As another reviewer indicated, this is Godin's most thought provoking book. His relates to businesses to Darwin's evolution theory, from their birth to possible extinction. Like the species, we evolve, or ignore necessary changes. That can lead to missed trends, anxiety and possible extinction. Its amazingly simple, and I have mulled this book over several times in the past few days.
Seth's feedback loops are crucial to understanding what and where the company needs to evolve. In Holland, in companies of 50 or more, a work council is required by law. It is loosely translated as our unions. I am a student of Dynamic Governance (DG), a way of managing as it provides equivalence in decision making. It also provides double linking-- which I'd equate to feedback loops. Two representatives from the level below is in the group above. One is the person accountable for the group's goals, the other, elected by the group. They buy in because they are represented, and when a decision is handed down-- implementation feedback gets to the top. It is so powerful that in Holland if a company adopts DG-- a work council is not required. Imagine in the US, the Auto Workers Union deciding they are so "heard" that they feel comfortable disbanding. Another DG premise is almost right out of Seth's mouth-- the engagement of all available intelligence within a group is used. I think combining this book and DG would give a company the power to ZOOM!
Thoroughly enjoyable..........2004-06-21
I really enjoyed Seth Godin's Permission Marketing so I had high expectations of Survival is Not Enough and I must say that my expectations were easily met.
I read the book cover to cover in one day and found that Seth's insights were not only meaningful but inspirational.
Any person managing people or thinking of starting a company should invest in reading this book. It will definitely change the way you see the role of people in your company and how companies hold on to survival for dear life rather then embracing change to continue and succeed and as we're shown time and time again "Survival is Not Enough"
Has some interesting ideas.........2004-06-14
Has some interesting ideas. I don't know how much of it can actually be implemented, however. Just because there's chaos around you doesn't mean you have to live/work in chaos. Remember the hare and the turtouise fable?

GOOD FOR SCIENCE OLYMPIAD!.......2007-04-16
I may be the only person reviewing this book who's not in college. Anyway, I ordered this book because I needed to study for an event in science olympiad dealing with ecology. Ever since I received it, I have gotten first place at every tournament! The plethora of real-world examples in this book were very helpful. My only problem with it were the "illustrations". Come on, diagrams? Maybe... but illustrations? NO WAY! Except a few here and there. I also didn't like how all the diagrams were the exact same color.
good, solid review of Ecology.......2007-01-19
I'm a grad student in ecology, and this book is a wonderful review of the subject. The writing is straightforward and includes lots of examples from the scientific literature.
It's well written and has many levels, so it would be just as valuable for an undergrad with an interest in ecology as it is for the grad student boning up for qualifying exams (me!). Much better than comparable ecology books that I used as an undergraduate.
intricate interrelationships.......2006-06-28
The ecology presented in the text emphasises an interdependence between the individual organisms that constitute an ecosystem. This interdependence can be understood in several ways, as explained. Using a flow of energy through the system. Where you start with an infalling of sunlight to drive photosynthesis. Building from there into an intricate mesh of relationships.
Another view follows the flow of matter in an ecosystem. As on the ocean floor. Where photosynthesis is not feasible. This ecosystem might be usefully seen as depending on a continual descending of matter from the upper ocean. Granted, this ultimately is driven by sunlight. But following the bookkeeping of matter flow is perhaps a more meaningful approach for benthic ecosystems.

Transcending the overplayed debate between utilitarians and rights theorists, the book offers a fresh methodological approach with specific constructive conclusions about our treatment of animals. David DeGrazia provides the most thorough discussion yet of whether equal consideration should be extended to animals' interests, and examines the issues of animal minds and animal well-being with an unparalleled combination of philosophical rigor and empirical documentation. This book is an important contribution to the field of animal ethics.

Learn why point shooting is the most practical technique for aiming and shooting a handgun in a real gunfight. This instructional guide teaches you how and when to use point shooting, compares it to two-handed sighted fire and tells how a major police training facility is teaching point shooting with stunning results.
Customer Reviews:
Missing the forest for the trees........2007-08-06
Although I agree with much of what the authors say, I also believe they fall into the same trap they accuse the "gurus" of, and alternate between valid points and contradictory statements:
1. Gun "gurus" are wrong to emphasize two-handed sighted fire.
2. "Realistic combat shooting technique is a continuum which ranges from extreme close range body point firing to two-handed sighted fire techniques."
3. You should emphasize one-handed point shooting.
A better approach would have been to emphasize statement #2 and then show the benefits of one-handed point shooting without trying to make it sound like the "holy grail" of combat shooting.
Overall a good book that is worth your time to read. If nothing else, it gives some historical perspective on the evolution of combat shooting and offers old/new ideas for consideration.
Historical, more than practical.......2006-03-25
The book is a classic in tactical shooting, and of interest on that account.
As far as practical information goes, it's sensible and clearly presented, although repetitious. The old photos are often unclear, and more sketches or photos, giving more detail, would be welcome.
I'd advise anyone to borrow the book, rather than buy it.
Applegate Updated.......2005-07-08
This book updates the close quarter handgun firing section of "Kill or Get Killed." Point shooting has a couple of advantages over using the sights. Focus on the sights psychologically removes the shooter from the gun fight and can increase accuracy--but the human eye can focus on only one thing at a time. Fratricide (shooting brother police officers) is one of the pitfalls of using your sights. You need target focus if you are to identify your target--and know what your target is doing at the moment you shot. Sight focus is important beyond 25 feet--this varies between people--and target focus is vital at ten feet or less. Most gunfights take place at close range because criminal activity is an anti-social social activity. The book, "Body Language" explains the distances for social interaction and how you can fool almost anybody at 25 feet, but have a lot of trouble doing so at 4 feet. Most of the police officers who died from bullet injuries in the line of duty were shot from distances of less than ten feet--often, by other police officers. Memorizing the grooves in your front sight instead of looking for body language clues when your enemy is close enough to touch is losing situational awareness--you'd have shot already if your target was doing something that justified shooting! The uncertain nature of close quarter encounters is why point shooting must be part of the skill set possessed by every soldier, law enforcement officer, and armed private citizen. Today's handguns have better sights--so low light, stress-induced visual impairment, and the effects of getting a face full of tear gas don't have the same effect as when armed with a M1911A1 issued in 1942. Point shooting is quick to learn, and point shooting skills don't decay as rapidly as using the sights.
It's a choice between target focus and front sight focus. Up close--target focus. At a distance--front sight focus.
Applegate's choice of the Glock automatic may surprise some--he chose that pistol for its grip angle and reliable functioning. Many ranges won't permit the use of Vector "low temperature tracer" ammunition because of a perceived fire hazard--in some areas, all tracer ammunition is prohibited. I don't recall Applegate recommending the use of AirSoft guns (with their low-velocity brightly colored plastic projectiles), but the projectile can be observed and corrections made in grip and trigger control when tracers are impractical.
Fairbairn and Sykes taught Applegate to fire "bursts" in order to make up for the low power of pistol bullets. The two British police officers were using the .45 automatic with full metal jacketed bullets fighting crime in Shanghai about 80 years ago. Applegate developed the two-shot burst as a fire discipline tool--there's a tendancy to shoot only one time and gape when the target doesn't fall down. There's another problem brought on by "cold ranges" (guns only loaded for a firing string, then loaded and cleared upon command) -- the trainee is trained to empty the magazine each time a target is presented. This creates two problems: fifteen or sixteen bullets go down range in a gun fight regardless of what the target does (the law enforcement officer is concentrating on keeping front sight on target blur) and the shooter now has an empty gun.
Point shooting isn't a cure-all. Point shooting is an effective answer to a limited tactical problem. Ignoring point shooting just because you cannot hit a six-inch bull's eye at 500 feet with the technique ignores the fact than most deadly force encounters are within 10 feet and totally ignores the human factors.
"Bullseyes Don't Shoot Back" is an excellent primer for point shooting. Get Rex Applegate's video, "Shooting for Keeps" as a companionn to the book. Don't neglect fire using your pistol sights, but practice point shooting.
Did not care for it........2005-06-05
The text repeats the same thoughts over and over. I was disappointed in the book. There are much better choices.
Tactical Firing Solution.......2003-11-24
I am a recent convert to Applegate.
I have been shooting for some time now, with limited results using frontsite focus, controlled breathing, squeeze trigger, be surprised when the round goes off, blah, blah, blah. The problem is...way to much fine motor skill required. When our heart rate goes to 145 bpm ie adrenilin dump, we enter the gross motor skill zone. All the fine motor skill crap will go out the window...Weaver, Chapmann, Iscosoles, all of it, unless you train for hundreds of hours to create 'muscle memory'. Most of us just don't have time, we will go to gross motor skills, as will most of the 'Experts'.
That's Applegates entire premise, and he is a true WW II combat expert, what is old, is now new, plus it could save your life!
I tried Point Shooting yesterday, fired 250 rounds at 45 feet (beyond the 30' range accuracy of point shooting), it works -BUY THIS BOOK!
PS - Applegate does endorse the Iscosoles stance for distance shooting, only if time allows, or whatever type of fine motor skill stance for that matter, but within 30' - Point Shoot.

Customer Reviews:
So helpful! Fun to read but no fluff and no nonsense!.......2007-08-07
Wedding books can get so fluffy sometimes that, while fun to read, they are rendered practically useless as far as solid information is concerned. This book is a lot of fun to read but it is also very no nonsense. It's organized very well and is packed with ideas, how-to, and tips! I put a summary of each chapter in my planner and refer to it often. This book has become my planning bible!
Fantastic Guide.......2007-03-05
This book really does let you in on some savvy ways to save money. It's also not product driven like bridal bargins is. There are a few names tossed out but it's mostly on letting you know what not to do to let others take advantage of you. The advice on updo's will be followed. Highly recommended!!
Best wedding planning book on the shelf!.......2005-08-09
I've purchased several wedding planning books, but Nina's is the absolute best. She has a fun, witty writing style and offers great tips for scoring the best prices and trendiest extras for your wedding. Don't hire a wedding planner - buy "Wedding Chic"!
Wish I had known about this book sooner!.......2005-08-04
I love this little book! I've been engaged for 6 months now and I just discovered this gem of a book a month ago on a friend's bookshelf. Much of the information was no longer useful in my stage of planning, as I'm getting married in less than 2 months. But, reading over it confirmed that some of the ways my fiance and I went about cutting costs for the wedding were actually done before, and smart. And, just because we've found ways to spend less, doesn't mean our wedding will turn out "cheap." There have been other information useful to me from this point on. It's a really savvy, and stylish. The illustrations are great, too! I've already purchased it for 2 friends who just got engaged.
The Bridezilla's Handbook.......2005-04-05
First off let me start by saying that this book lacks fun. This book approaches weddings like the police approach known criminals. Planning your wedding shouldn't be a bloodsport, it should be fun.
This book does have some great ideas and information on how to save on your wedding costs, but an even greater cost could be your relationship with your vendors, friends, and family.
Everybody wants the best prices possible and should try to get them. Following the guidelines in this book would not be the best method for obtaining that goal. This book teaches you to look down on your wedding vendors and to treat them as an opponent in your way of saving money.
If this is how you will approach your vendors for your special day, you surely will not earn favor with any of them.
If you're the type of person who actually catorgorizes your friends in an "A" list and a "B" list or are so self centered you could have the wedding of your dreams even if you were the only one who attended, this book is right up your alley.
My advice is work with people you're comfortable with and respect at a price you can afford and you will have the most wonderful day of your life.
Save your cash and pass on this book.

A Great Look at Currier.......2001-02-01
This is apparently a condensation of and paperback release of a book published by the same author and press in 1979. The original is one of the most mind-boggling and gorgeous books ever published in the United States of America. I'm not overstating the case.
A limited edition of 1500 hand numbered volumes were published in mission leather by Abbeville Press with gold stenciling on the huge spine and a four color lithograph embossed on the high quality leather cover! Wow! At what seems like 8 or 9 pounds it's enormous. The paper quality and print reproduction are of the highest order. And the large number of lithos, especially in color, make this a must have for anyone interested in lithography. The Peters collection, from which this was drawn (with assistance from the Museum of New York), is the finest collection of Currier and Ives in the world.
The insights are excellent and provide interesting background on some of Curriers artists and competitors. Currier's work itself gives a terrific peek at 19th century America... The vast majority of the leather edition must be in archival collections by now.
