Book Description

"In this concise book... Braudel summarizes the broad themes of his three-volume Civilisation materielle et capitalisme, 1400-1800 and offers his reflections on the historian's craft and on the nature of the historical imagination... Taken as a whole, the book is provocative and stimulating. On occasion, it rises to revelation when two or three sentences of compressed but brilliant prose force us to reconsider the events of an entire century or the history of a continent." -- American Historical Review.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of one of the great works of history.......2006-05-11

This is an accessible summary of the theses that propel Braudel's great work and the conclusions that he derived. It should be treated not as a substitute for immersion in "Capitalism and Civilization", but as a compelling inducement to the same.

3 out of 5 stars Freedom is Bondage and Good is Bad.......2006-01-09

Remember when the Hamiltonians who were in favor of a strong central Roman-type government and were against federalism usurped the lable "Federalists" for themselves? (see Cecelia Kenyon's 'Men of Little Faith') The Romanist elites have been confusing onlookers with Orwellian doublespeak long before Eric Blair was ever born!

On both sides of the Atlantic, mercantilists and other corporate statists veiled their anti-capitalist behavior with the rhetoric of capitalism. In other words, they called (and continue to call) their behavior "capitalism" when in reality their behavior was (and is) anti-captalist.

The result is many books like this one, that rightfully criticize the destructive behavior of corporate statists but wrongly refer to them as "capitalists" and to their anti-capitalist behavior as "capitalism".

However, if you translate the word "capitalism" to "corporatism", you have a book that is powerfully accurate when describing the behavior of corporatists. For example, on p. 64 Braudel says "Capitalism only triumphs when it becomes identified with the state, when it is the state". Anyone familiar with the economics of free enterprise knows that statement is a contradiction in terms - capitalism is opposed to statism and "state capitalism" is an oxymoron. But when you translate the word "capitalism" in Braudel's statement to "corporatism", THEN you have something quite valuable:

"Corporatism only triumphs when it becomes identified with the state, when it is the state".

Now this is spot-on! And that's exactly what is happening today. Economic fascists have successfully confused even their critics be calling themselves capitalists and free enterprisers when they are nothing but corporate statists. Part of the problem for the critics was that they were seeking to prove that the system of corporate statism they wrongly refer to a capitalism was identified with social and individual selfishness and egoism, when it was really the result of statist elites and monopoly power.

This book is important then for its observations of corporate statists, a breed of statists. But the Great American Corporatists are wrongly referred to as capitalists. This should be read alongside Ludwig von Mises's 'Theory and History: An Interpretation of Social and Economic Evaluation' where he stressed the role of the state in creating corporatist forms and hence "class interest", although he preferred the sociologically more accurate term "caste" to "class".

Book Description

Organizations around the world today are struggling to stay ahead of the pack. With its fanciful illustrations and deliciously wicked humor, Outlearning the Wolves is the story of an organization that might resemble yours--complete with bad habits, nagging vulnerabilities, and resignation to the status quo.

A flock of sheep, fearful of the wolves' mythical cleverness, is initially debilitated by fragmentation and false assumptions.

But as the sheep build a culture for learning, the contributions of each individual are utilized in strikingly new and productive ways. By working together, the flock develops the capability for dramatic learning that ensures it can thrive while facing fresh challenges.

Outlearning the Wolves presents a powerful metaphor for understanding the issues organizations face when they realize they must learn how to learn differently. Any organization seeking to build both a rewarding workplace and a thriving enterprise should introduce these ideas to every worker--from the front line to the boardroom.

Outlearning the Wolves is a unique resource for teachers and learners across a broad range of settings. Included is a concise guide to the story's essential points--a ready-made lesson outline, perfect for directing group learning.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a half-day management seminar.......2007-05-01

No matter what we do, there will always be a pack of figurative wolves stalking us. In business, there will always be other groups and organizations that will be trying to take away your customers and lower your market share. The first part of this book is about a flock of sheep that are in a pasture surrounded by a solid barbed-wire fence. And yet, even with this protection, an occasional sheep is lost to the wolves.
Since this only rarely occurs and few sheep are actually lost, most of the members of the flock now accept it as a fact of their existence. However, there are a few who begin to challenge this fundamental assumption. The "malcontents" follow the trend and learn that more sheep are lost after protracted dry weather than during rainy periods. This is puzzling, so they begin exploring the waterway that runs through their pasture. Armed with their new and critical eyes, they see where the stream runs under the fence and conclude that the wolves are able to crawl under it when the stream is running low.
Their solution is very simple, build a dam to create a pond that will keep the water level high. Once this is done, the wolves will no longer be able to enter the pasture and make off with one of their kin.
The story is then followed by a section of textual explanation of what the main points are. Namely, it is foolish to accept regular losses as a fact of your existence. Always ask the question, "Is this really inevitable?" In many cases it is not and determining that it is not inevitable is the major step towards finding a solution. In the modern business world, not taking advantage of any improvement can be devastating, for if you are not smart enough to do it, there is most certainly a competitor who is.
This is a short book that is perfect for the half-day management seminar. Illustrated and only 64 pages long, it can be read in about an hour and is packed with information designed to get you thinking about your approach to life, work and career.

Had to read the book for school and it was quite interesting and a cool way to explain the different aspects of systems thinking.

4 out of 5 stars Outlearning the Wolves: Surviving and Thriving in a Learning Organization, Second Edition.......2006-11-13

A short, easy read that is a modern-day fable about how systems work. Charming and enlightening. Good discussion questions at the end--this book could be applied to so many work and life experiences. Funny, too!

5 out of 5 stars Outlearning the wolves.......2002-04-09

Outlearning the wolves,
By David Hutchens.

This book is a short and at times funny book. It is fast and easy too read, but still has good content. It is about how one sheep in a flock spoke out in an effort to stop wolf related casualties (WRC). This sheep motivated the flock and they started too try and find a way too stop the wolf. They all put their thoughts together and pieced together the mystery of how the wolfs were getting to their pen and then found a way to stop it. But they would still have trouble...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching tool.......2000-11-26

My undergraduate students love this book! Teaching systems thinking in a military college is not as unlikely as it might seem but it does present challenges. This book has proven very successful as a 'launching pad' for the semester's work, keeping their attention while presenting key concepts succinctly. It's a safe bet that if it can engage people who have 28 hours of tasks to cram into a 24-hour day, it would be worth its weight in gold in a manufacturing setting, a dot.com company, or anywhere busy people are balancing production with growing an organization.

Before consulting with customer service, it's always a good idea to read the manual. Psychiatrist John Ratey has condensed years of research on one of the most intimidating yet ubiquitous pieces of hardware in the world into the ever-handy User's Guide to the Brain. More intellectually stimulating than day-to-day practical, the Guide uses tales from Ratey's practice and other clinical venues, tidbits from neuroscientific research, and plain common sense to suggest how the brain develops and manifests personality and behavior. With section titles like "Free Will and the Anterior Cingulate Gyrus," many readers will feel intimidated, but Ratey is careful to direct his explanations to all--even those without a PhD in neuroanatomy. His interesting four-theater theory of mental function is the most directly practical section of the book, incorporating the author's years of experience with patients into a sensible framework that readers can use to better tune their own systems. Describing the changing of the guard from psychoanalysis to a more biological paradigm, Ratey writes:
Neuroscientists have, in a sense, simply taken over the elite, almost clerical office once held by analysts. The language used to describe the brain is, if anything, more opaque than any of the old psychoanalytic terminology, which was itself so obscure that only trained professionals could wade through the literature. Most people never even bother to learn such terminology, deeming that, like the language of the computer scientists of the early 1970s, it is better left to the nerds.
Determined to help us overcome our sense of helplessness in matters cranial, Ratey has shown that we can understand ourselves better and can learn quite a bit from the nerds. --Rob Lightner

      Book Description

John Ratey, bestselling author and clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, here lucidly explains the human brain’s workings, and paves the way for a better understanding of how the brain affects who we are. Ratey provides insight into the basic structure and chemistry of the brain, and demonstrates how its systems shape our perceptions, emotions, and behavior. By giving us a greater understanding of how the brain responds to the guidance of its user, he provides us with knowledge that can enable us to improve our lives.

In A User’s Guide to the Brain, Ratey clearly and succinctly surveys what scientists now know about the brain and how we use it. He looks at the brain as a malleable organ capable of improvement and change, like any muscle, and examines the way specific motor functions might be applied to overcome neural disorders ranging from everyday shyness to autism. Drawing on examples from his practice and from everyday life, Ratey illustrates that the most important lesson we can learn about our brains is how to use them to their maximum potential.

this book is totally awesome, I've read many books about the brain as I work in a rehab hospital and this is by far the most down to earth book I've read, it explains everything well however, and uses examples of real life people to put it in perspective

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Ratey is Under Rated.......2006-06-09

This co-author of Dr. Edward Hallowell's book is under rated to say the least. This book written in every day language explains the workings of the brain that are useful to the lay-person and professional alike. Dr. Ratey explains his points with helpful analogies and illustrations. . Written for audiences intermediate-level of information, yet can be comprehended by even the novice. This book provides a much needed balance to information on the workings of the human mind.

      5 out of 5 stars A must.......2006-04-20

This books explains with simple words things we all should know, since knowing them would allow us to live a more productive and enjoyable life.

The real-life examples are very illustrating.

Little cons: illustrations are very technical, and sometimes the text gets hard to read due to the increase in the rate of technical words -referring to brain's parts- per paragraph.

The cons are so little that they do not affect the overall quality of the book.

Highly recommended even if you are not interested in how the brain works.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent material.......2006-03-20

This is by far one of the best books i have read in my life, it explains everything so easy that you actually understand what is going on inside your head. it has many real cases that show the application of what he just told you. if you are thinking to buy this book, dont think, just buy it.

Excellent debating reference tool to help people appreciate WHY they see the world as they do & why most others see it differently! (Perception). Also very useful as recommended reading for Careers Counselled candidates who have become lost in the jobs wilderness through redundancy, graduating with a degree with no market force, or just at a careers crossroads & have lost all professional motivation. Perception is everything to us because it greatly influences everything we "see" & therefore, everything we end up doing as a response. This publication explains that key issue very well.

                Book Description

If you are about to start law school or are in your first year, this book would be a good companion. Now in the fourth edition, this text has helped thousand of folks become better law students and down the road, better lawyers.

Like other introductory books, it covers the basics: reading and briefing cases; preparing for class; outlining and study groups; taking exams. There are exercises so you can apply what you have learned. In addition to these essentials, the book focuses of what is often quite elusive: legal analysis; Why do courts follow precedent?; How are cases applied and distinguished?; How is ambiguous language interpreted? Legal analysis is the hidden ball of the first year, and with this book you will be well on your way.

There are chapters on legal writing (not necessarily boring or highfalutin') and on oral argument (not necessarily terrifying). These chapters will help in first year writing and Moot Court Programs. And, for those of you who aren't sure, there are chapters revealing the wide array of careers that will be open to you.

The book reads fast, well, and is often funny. That said, drawing on the work of philosophers, psychologists, and novelists, it takes you and your calling quite seriously, but never (not even once) pompously.

                4 out of 5 stars good review.......2007-08-31

The University of Florida recommends reading this book before starting law school there. I read it and found if was a very good cohmprehensive review of what to expect. It makes the first few weeks of school seem a little less intense if you have an idea of what you're getting into.
Hope this helps and Go Gators!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book to help prep your mind........2007-08-28

Nothing will completely prepare you for the brain battery that is law school, but this book will help prepare you to the basic concepts and get you in the right frame of mind before you start Orientation. Get it. Read it. Then work hard at your classes and you'll do great.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to read, but lacks content.......2007-05-15

This book covers a variety of subjects, introduces law school, gives a very basic introduction to note taking/exams, gives a few pointers on writing and generally eases someones worries if they are concerned about law school.

However, that is all it does. It does not contain anything you will actually need to know for law school. It will just make you feel less uneasy about it.

If you can rent it at your library for free, it is worth a browse, but it isn't worth actually buying if you want to actually learn something before or during law school.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book to read if you are Law School bound.......2006-08-11

This book is humorous, insightful, and worthwhile.

The single best book that I have found which really does explain the study and practice of law, hence the title.

                      Book Description

This compelling look at graffiti explores the many aspects of this shocking, raw, and often vulgar art form that are not typically discussed. The hearts and minds of obsessive graffiti writers are revealed, and a range of controversial topics are addressed. What motivates them? How do they live? Why and how do they become interested in what many see as vandalism? The techniques and tools of the trade are examined, and interviews with notorious graffiti writers from around the world are included. Filled with stunning and rare color photographs of some of the deadliest tags, throw-ups, cross-outs, and burners from the private collections of graffiti legends, this book will be treasured by graffiti writers, those fascinated by hip-hop culture, and individuals interested in urban art and the lives and motives of obsessive vandals.

                      4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2007-10-08

For a book of throwups, this book was pretty good. I enjoyed it, although if you write, some of the "how to" stuff is nothing new.

                      4 out of 5 stars It isn't what I thought........2006-11-03

I thought it was going to focus more on graffiti as an art and not just about tagging. I am more interested in it as an art and how it has affected the graphic design and art since its beginnings. This book seems to glorify graffiti as a crime than appreciate it for what it is.

                      4 out of 5 stars All CIty.......2006-05-23

Good book for those who practice and entertain the thought of going all-city. I appreciate most the interviews.

                      5 out of 5 stars A REAL GRAFFITI BOOK.......2006-04-11

As a graffiti writer I love this book. If I wasn't a graffiti writer, I would still love this book. This book covers it all! It explains everything from a tag to piece, and everything in between. It puts everything you ever wanted to know about graffiti in one simple book. So if you love graffiti like I do, then this is a great book to add to your collection. If you know nothing about graffiti, buy this book and you will have the knowledge to pass-off as a writer. But remember, just having knowledge won't get you ups or props!!! Keep it real.

3 out of 5 stars Strong, but the focus is to narrow.......2006-02-21

This an excellent book for someone who is curious about how graffiti has evolved, as well as the codes of conduct and social interior of one sect of the graffiti movement. However, this book only addresses on aspect of a pluralistic culture. There is no attention given to mural art, little attention given to stencils, and no attention given to the real variety of street art. I reccommend watching the documentary "style wars" along with this to get a perspective on some of what the book is talking about. Paul 107 (the author) seems to be a kind of childish poseur of the hip-hop "all-city" mentality, reflected in his choice of direction and the kinds of questions he asks when interviewing some of the old classic graff artists. The reality is graffiti is much older than he even understands, and has roots in places for beyond his scope. Some books on graffiti in south and central america would give a better idea of what I am talking about here. Most of the people in this book are the kind that I normally look down upon in the graffiti world as a colleague so-to-speak. Flow is probaly the contradiction to this, and fortunately his section is lengthy and interesting. Not a complete picture, but a fair one of the direction Paul 107 chose.
