                Book Description

This book introduces the suite of techniques known as 'distance sampling', so-called because the common theme is the sampling of distances of objects from a line or point. The objects are usually animals or groups of animals ('clusters'), and the primary aim is to estimate their density or abundance in a survey area. In line transect sampling, the sampled distances are the shortest or perpendicular distance from a detected object to the line. It is the most widely used method for assessing the abundance of a wide range of terrestrial and marine animals. In point transect sampling, distances of detected objects from the sampled points are recorded. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to both techniques, and also describes several related techniques. 'Introduction to Distance Sampling' updates the 1993 book 'Distance Sampling', which was the first, and until now, only book devoted to the topic. The book is aimed at quantitative biologists and wildlife managers, and statisticians involved in wildlife monitoring programmes. Of particular significance in this update is the chapter on study design and field methods, which has been extensively rewritten and extended. New technologies such as laser range finders, theodolites and the Geographical Positioning System (GPS) are discussed, and advice is given on a wide range of survey methods. Analysis methods have also been generalized, through the use of various types of multiplier. Many exercises have been introduced, to make the book more useful to graduate students in wildlife and conservation management.

This book explains the methods of distance sampling, which is a statistical procedure for estimating the abundance and density of biological populations. This book outlines the statistical procedures, assumptions, and philosophy of distance sampling, and gives good advice for survey protocol and design.

                  Book Description

Of all the world's early civilizations, it was ancient Egypt that fostered the closest relationship with the animal world. All aspects of life, both secular and sacred, gave prominent place to man's vital involvement with living creatures of every kind. Peasant and craftsman, ruler and priest treated animals not as mere utilitarian objects, but as symbols of creation equal in the hierarchy of life to humans themselves and closely tied both to everyday existence and to the realm of the gods. The magnificent photographs in this volume show the incomparable richness of the Pharaonic fauna in all forms of artistic expression—painting, sculpture, relief carving, architectural ornamentation, and even in hieroglyphs. They range from astonishing realism in the depiction of birds and beasts, both wild and domesticated, useful and harmful, with which the people of the Nile Valley came into daily contact, to hieratic stylization in portraying the pantheon of animal-headed gods and the sacred and fabulous creatures that inhabited their devotional, funerary and magic world. The scholarly descriptions and informative captions that accompany this amazing bestiary place each animal depicted in its proper context in relation to man, to the environment, and to the gods. From geese to monkeys, crocodiles to scorpions, the list is virtually endless, while the superb artistry and extraordinary range of the subject matter will open the eyes of Egyptologists and naturalists alike to a subject that has never previously been so superbly displayed and explained. 250 color illustrations.

                      4 out of 5 stars worth getting.......2007-02-08

Have not read all of it, but what I have read is good. It is a good book for beginners, as well as, for advanced students; very helpful information.

5 out of 5 stars Very well organized book on Taijiquan Theory.......2006-09-02

I own many books that are translations of classic Taijiquan writings. Many of the books have a tremendous amount of information for the serious Taijiquan student. The problem I have had with many of these translations, with no fault to the translator, is that the information is presented in no logical order.

It's like being given a jigsaw puzzle in pieces and having to figure out how to put them together to get the whole.

Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming has always been very organized and logical in his approach to presenting information on the martial arts. Consequently, the layout of this book on Taijiquan Theory is extremely well done and is presented in the order that one should learn the techniques taught.

Now, the organization of this book alone would compel me to own a copy. Yet, there is an even more compelling reason to obtain this book. The translations in this book are not of old traditional texts, but rather they are a translation of writings by Dr. Yang himself. Anyone familiar with the published works of Dr. Yang knows the high level of knowledge and skill that he possesses.

When you read this book you are getting a wonderful distillation of years of practice and knowledge that Dr. Yang brings to the table. This is not a collection of writings by numerous artists, but the focused and balanced views of a premier martial artist who has a resume in the martial arts that covers the soft and hard martial arts.

The book's premise is the need to learn to regulate, in order, various processes in our body and mind. The following areas are covered:

                      Regulating the body
                      Regulating the breath
                      Regulating the mind
                      Regulating the Qi
                      Regulating the spirit

Dr. Yang starts off the book with an overview of the five parts to regulate. The overview is so well done that a student could take the information and make serious progress in their training.

However, what is very satisfying is that Dr. Yang then takes each of the five parts and thoroughly explains how to achieve the necessary regulation. At times, he might refer to other books that he has published that have even more detailed explanations of the five regulations.

I remember seeing this book for sale and thinking, "oh, I already have books on theory, I probably don't need another." Yet the truth is, after reading this book, if I was given a choice of only keeping one book on Taijiquan Theory, this would be the one I would choose.

Additionally, Dr. Yang covers the following topics while presenting his Theory of Taijiquan:

                      Jin, Pushing Hands & Sparring
Taiji long and short fighting strategies
                      Relationship of Jin & Qi
Unification of the internal Qi & external physical manifestations of the Qi

Run, don't walk, and obtain a copy of this book. It is a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars A great treasure of information .......2006-03-04

For an intermediate Taijiquan practitioner or teacher of the art, this book is a must.
Dr. Yang, Ywing-Ming carefully and elegantly writes a most profound treatise on Taijiquan. His years of experience come through clearly in the way that he is able to describe the use of internal power and leverage which makes Taiji such an awesome health and self defense art.

In this book, Dr. Yang has made a perfect reference document for disciplined Taijiquan practice that holds true to the martial, health, and spiritual roots. This book has an outline format that almost any Taijiquan teacher could use to supplement his or her class. Presented in English, followed by Chinese, the book stands alone as a dynamic bridge between cultures and hundreds of years of Taijiquan history.

Beware though, the depth and wealth of knowledge contained within the pages of this work may overwhelm the general Taijiquan practitioner. But for the brave of heart who wants to explore how deep the rabbit hole goes in Taijiquan, this books serves as a perfect lantern.

The Taijiquan Theory of Dr. Yang, Ywing-Ming
                      The Root of Taijiquan

Dr. Yang, Ywing-Ming lays out an ambitious agenda for this theoretical treatise, which probably has more relevance for the advanced practitioner or teacher than for the initiate or intermediate student. Having grown up barefoot, studied under authentic masters in the traditional way, and established a world-wide martial arts school in the U.S.A., Dr. Yang has worthy references for this work. First, 35 years of diligent training. Second, the publication of previously secret texts during the last 25 years.

Drawing on the specialized knowledge of various traditions, Dr. Yang creates a broad, comprehensive definition of Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), independent of particular stylings. He relates the classic underpinnings of Taiji to modern biology. He shows the progression of internal energy regulation in meditation and Qigong training. He presents Taijiquan as a martial Qigong. The ultimate object of enlightenment entails coordination of inner energy with the greater energy of nature.

This book has an outline format. The page layout consists of one or two paragraphs of formal text, presented in English, followed by Chinese. Next, commentary appears in wider paragraphs of English. Some repetition occurs.

The text does not illustrate the postures but concentrates on their context and purpose. The book centers six regulations (the Body, Breathing, Emotional Mind, Qi, Spirit, and Jin), Pushing Hands, and Sparring. The eight chapters map the physical basis for breath and energy, whether internal or external.

Dr. Yang has created a comprehensive model for disciplined Taijiquan practice that retains martial, health, and spiritual roots. Does his scholarship establish a historic standard? The answer depends on your level of practice. On one hand, the breadth and perception of this treatise may have profound implications. On the other hand, the weight of information may overwhelm the general reader.

5 out of 5 stars An impeccable and impressive resource.......2003-06-19

Taijiquan Theory Of Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming: The Root Of Taijiquan is an impeccable and impressive resource for those seeking to learn more not only about the practice, but also the beginnings of this ancient martial art form. Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming has spent twenty years translating songs and poems from Taijiquan, and representative works are presented both in their original Chinese and in an English translation. Black-and-white photographs of Taijiquan movements enhance the advice and centuries-old wisdom concerning means to regulate body, breath, mind and spirit; as well as improve personal form and balance; refine the martial art student's Jin and Qi, and a great deal more. Taijiquan Theory is an impressive and strongly recommended addition to any personal or professional Martial Arts Studies reference collection or reading list.

I thought the book was very discouraging to the readers. I think you can be realistic without saying - basically unless you are extremely lucky, you don't have a chance to be a columnist.

I felt the book was always on the cusp of giving useful information. Then just before it was getting good, the author would stop short and start a new topic. I think the author could have gone into topics in a more detailed manner, instead of paragraph long diatribes on why this is really never going to happen for you.

This is a good but very basic introduction to column writing. I was hoping for more. Still, it seems to be the only thing out there on the subject and it column writing is your dream it would do you well to check this book out.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful for aspiring columnists.......2000-12-18

This is the first book I've read that walks you through the different aspects of writing and selling a column. It is well thought out and it gives the new and would-be columnist the key information needed to actually succeed as a columnist. You do not feel patronized by an "expert" which happens with some how-to books. You are simply given a good set of tools that you can put to work right away. I highly recommend it.

As an aspiring columnist, I found the book informative and discouraging. Good information on getting started, researching the market, making contacts. Discouraging about availability of opportunity and rates of pay. Disappointing that only three columnists were interviewed for examples, and that one, who writes for free, says he has tactics in place to keep all new people out. Whatever....

I am Greg Daugherty's son, Jeff Daugherty, and I'd just like to say that it is the best book ever written even though I have never read it in my entire life.

And by the way, for those of you who say he used to be an editor, he is still an editor for Consumer Reports.

5 out of 5 stars Good Things Come In Small Packages...Packed With Great Advice.......2006-12-06

When I first received this how-to book, I thought it didn't look like much. At 124 pages, it was quite a bit smaller then my other writing manuals and reference books. Then I started reading it. I found that on every page of "You Can Write For Magazines", Author Greg Daugherty, has filled them with invaluable advice, ideas, and the dos and don'ts of either breaking into the freelance business, or improving your odds of getting the Editors to consider your ideas for publication.

Having been on both sides of the coin, editor and writer,he is able to let the writers know just what those editors look for(providing you didn't catch them in a bad mood), and he completely understands the writers points of views and feelings, from the dawn of the idea, to the acceptance or rejection. I also liked that this how-to book, was in no way a dry read. Daugherty keeps every page interesting and injects his own brand of humor as well. I read it from cover to cover, but I know I will be returning to it for help in the future.

The book covers it all. You'll learn what goes on behind the scenes in the magazine world, the best techniques for selling your ideas, writing a good query letter to get the attention of the editor(here I would've liked an illustrated example of a query letter for those getting started), brief manuscript mechanics, best way to prepare and conduct interviews, and how to deal with rejection. There are chapters that go into specific types of writing. For example, how to write 'how-to' articles, writing about famous people, writing one of those Quizzes so many magazines have, writing from personal experience and many more ideas even including review work(naturally this was a chapter I found most interesting). One bit of advice here, was to make a light pencil mark, next to notable pages in a book you are to review. If I had done that with this book for review, I would have marked up the entire book, and gone over my word allotment here as well.

Other advice covers, money matters, contracts, your rights, magazine terminology, finding time, other reference books that may be of great help, and what to do after that great day arrives and you are PUBLISHED!This book answers all questions for both fiction and nonfiction, the newbie, and gives solid advice and a fresh outlook on things for those that have been at it for a while.

In Chapter 20, 'The Writer's Reference Shelf',Daugherty, lists 7 essential books for every writer. A Dictionary, a Thesaurus, A Style book(he gives recommendations),Book of Quotations, Encyclopedia(found on most computers these days),an Almanac and an Atlas. I would have to disagree and say there are 8(where magazine writer's are concerned). To that list I would add "You Can Write For Magazines" by Greg Daugherty.

Thanks Mr. Daugherty for all the help. I'm already putting some of it to good use.

4 out of 5 stars Great book to get you started..........2003-12-29

I finished a short book titled You Can Write For Magazines by Greg Daugherty. It is 124 pages of practical advice on how to turn your writing efforts into salable material for magazines. The book covers how to create ideas, how to write effective query letters to editors to sell those ideas, how manuscripts should be formatted, and so much more. When you get done with this book, you'll have an idea of what you need to do in order to start your career as a part-time freelance writer. If you've been writing already for publications or if you've read other books on this subject, you might not find an abundance of new material here. But the information you will find is concise and readable, so it's worth reviewing it again...

4 out of 5 stars So You Want To Sell Your Articles To Magazines?.......2003-11-21

Have you ever considered writing for magazines but were not quite sure how to go about it?
Perhaps, you have wondered how magazines work? How do go about selling your articles?
What about ideas, where do you find them?
These and many more topics are elaborated upon in Greg Daugherty's slim tome, You Can Write For Magazines.
Daugherty is a successful freelance writer and magazine editor for more than 20 years and as he states, "I guess I can qualify as something of an insider in the magazine business now."

The 124 pages of text contain a wealth of detailed information that will invariably prove invaluable to anyone contemplating selling their articles to magazines.
The topics are divided as follows: selling, securing ideas, query letters, manuscript mechanics, leads, how-to articles, writing about people, personal experience articles, quiz writing, sidebars, reviews, rejection, business aspects, reference sources and how to speak "magazine."

From the very onset, we are informed that editors are not gods and that New York is not the cradle of civilization.
In other words, do not be intimidated by the editors and do not hold onto the belief that it is only New York where you will sell your articles.
Once you have overcome this kind of a "stage fright" you are ready to proceed onto the next steps.

Daugherty's familiarity with the subject matter and the fact that he is a seasoned writer adds a great deal of substance to his clear and concise text.

As an example, his dealing with the topic of selling articles is primarily based on the advice "study the magazine." Although the author admits, "this may be the most clichéd advice ever offered to people who want to write for magazines. It may also be the best."
This study should entail looking at the cover, table of contents, masthead, departments, articles, advertising, guidelines, and the various types of magazines. In other words, don't leave any stone unturned, you may unexpectedly find a niche.

An added feature is the inclusion in the last chapter of the book of the jargon used by writers and editors.
The list, although not complete, can help you "speak magazine like a native."
As Daugherty states, if some editor orders you to "kill that widow," you won't end up doing anything you'd regret."

One of the deficiencies of the book, however, is there is an absence of a section dealing with other magazine reference sources and web sites.
                      This would have been helpful.

Nonetheless, this compact guide will prove to be a welcome addition to a writer's library.

Greg Daugherty was the managing editor of Success magazine when I wrote a time-management column for the magazine, so I can speak from experience when I say that he's a talented writer and an expert who knows the magazine industry from the inside out.

With more than 20 years experience in the magazine business, he knows what works. In his book, YOU CAN WRITE FOR MAGAZINES, he shares his knowledge in an informative, inspiring, and entertaining way.

Over the years I've followed the principles that Greg details in his book and I can attest to how practical and useful they are. I've had more than 200 articles published in a wide variety of publications. It's quite a "high" to go into a store, look at the magazine rack, and know that you have articles in three national magazines that month.

The ingredients for success are in Greg's book--first how to get great ideas, then write winning articles (leads, middles, and endings), quizzes, compelling interviews, eye-catching sidebars (13 kinds), query letters that work, and finally prepare your manuscript and sell it--all you need to do is to add your own special brand of creativity and some perseverance.

Her enticing demonstrations and skill building exercises make you want to get started right away! Every page is brightly illustrated with Mary's exuberant sketches and paintings. The book is a joy to read and to paint along with the author.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to Read - Fun to Paint.......2005-11-12

A great book for the beginning painter! The book is informative in a simple to understand prose, practical in it's application of technique(skill building exercises and quick tips) and encouraging to the new painter. I believe it makes a novice want to take that first step.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for an oil painting novice.......2005-11-02

This a wonderful introduction to oil painting. True, there's not that much specifically about water soluble paints-but that's easy to overlook because this book is overall so truly motivating. The author demystifies the process with simple and practical instructions that seem almost designed for a child-which is what a beginner at something really is. This book eliminates fear and instills confidence-what else could you want?
Finally, her paintings are beautiful and inspiring in their apparent simplicity. Get it!

4 out of 5 stars Water soluble oils - no experience required.......2005-10-02

Good book. It is great to have a book dedicated to this medium. It simplifies the process of painting with water-soluble oils. It does go through a lot of things that are not specific to this new medium, so a lot of writing is "wasted" on issues that you can resolve with other books on oils and color theory. But, the author does cover everything very thoroughly and clearly.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Contains Little Information on Water-soluble Oils.......2005-09-09

This book is primarily a course in basic painting tecnique applicable to any medium. There is almost no information specific to painting with water-soluble oils and some of what it has is misleading. The author states that they will have the same consistency, feel and volume as regular oils, which they do not. Don't waste your money unless you are a beginner who has never held a brush before. The basic instruction is good, but is almost juvenile in approach and has little to do with water-soluble oils.
