Dry and boring........2002-02-27

I realize this is a textbook, and as such, I didn't expect it to be scintilating. This text, however, did not even meet up to my limited expectations- the chapters are way too long and attempt to conver too much material. It would have been useful if the authors attempted to break up the material into smaller, more digestible bits. All in all, this book is extremely dry.

Has both positive and negative examples........2001-05-12

I don't know why, but I didn't enjoy reading this book. It didn't seem right. I guess I'm not a big fan of marketing. However, concepts were explained quite well and overall it was informative. Unlike many business related books this one did have negative examples, complete with explanations what, how, and why something went wrong. For that I rate it at 4 stars.

A practical and inspirational guide to the Future.......2001-05-15

I really found this book to be a superb combination of practically and vision. It is a great read, precise and thought provoking. It makes you really want to jump out of your seat and participate in the creation of the future. One really important point among many is that we cannot move forward, adapt and be innovative by relaying on the past as a point of reference. The only way to really be successful and prosperous is by dropping our old parameters, learning from future and applying it to the present. I have read this book twice. I highly recommend it to those who do not want some else eating their cheese. I look forward to Mr. Grulke next book.

The future is not what it used to be.......2001-02-27

'Ten Lessons from the Future' is the ideal books to help MBA students conceptualize the challenges of the future and to break open the prison of contemporary thinking. Grulke's first hand knowledge of trends that will shape the next decade, as well as his keen synthesis on how disruptive technology will shape the future makes this book one of the best business books on the shelf. Any predication of the future is precarious at best, but Grulke paradoxically paints a believable picture of an increasingly fractal environment. This book needs to be compulsory reading at any Business School who wishes to prepare their students for the challenges of the future.

As the rules for personal and business success change it is increasingly tough and indeed risky to take lessons from the past. I have yet to read anything so clear, simple and yet impactful on the future. Anyone serious about living and succeeding in the future needs to invest in this book. It challenges, excites, scares and motivates one into really looking forward to tomorrow. It synthesizes traditionally complex issues. It enables individual and corporate action. A must for anyone who intends to be around in the future!

Pinet is a superbly organized and presented textbook for advanced students of this fascinating and specialized field of science. An optional student study guide enhances the primary text, which stands well on its own with full-color illustrations, and a wide survey of topics from marine sedimentation to biological productivity in the ocean, coastal habitats, ocean circulation and much more. With laboratory exercises designed by Karl Chauffe and Mark Jefferies which make use of safe, inexpensive, reusable, and readily available materials, Invitation To Oceanography is a very confidently recommended addition to academic reading lists, as well as an excellent curriculum resource for "student friendly" classroom instruction.

Weirdest textbook I ever used.......2003-06-20

Although Mr. Pinet can explain things very clearly, some of his writing is very strange, especially for a college textbook. At one point, he refers to animals as "critters." At another point, he recommends an experiment of taking your bathtub outside and putting by your pool when the wind is blowing. This book is full of weird little things like that.

Just what I wanted!.......2000-06-15

Although a college textbook designed for non-majors, "Invitation to Oceanography" contains much information for those interested in the subject. What I especially liked and appreciated the most were the application tasks. These are mathematical problems/questions one can use and apply to the ocean on their next trip to the beach. Moreover, the Internet links provided in the book add a great supplement. Educators at the secondary (high school or college) level will enjoy teaching from this book.

Great Applications Towards Oceanography.......2000-05-28

"Invitation to Oceanography" provides a wealth of information as a non-fiction text. For those interested in the complexities of the inner-workings of oceanic events and marine biology, this is the book to read. The book is a fascinating read delving into facts and figures of oceanic characteristics and definitions. Teachers and/or those interested in marine science will find the book intriguing with its application towards the field of mathematics, marine science, and chemistry. It will forever change how you perceive the ocean on your next beach vacation.

* This pioneering work in English brings together an amazing assemblage of court cases in which animals have been named as defendants--chickens, rats, field mice, bees, gnats, and (in 34 recorded instances) pigs, among others--providing insight into such modern issues as animal rights, capital punishment, and social and criminal theory. Evans suggests an intriguing distinction between trials of specific animals or particular crimes (the ""murder"" of an infant by a pig, for example) and trials of animals for larger, catastrophic events such as plagues and infestations. In the latter case, Evans suggests a parallel to witchcraft.

Astonishing, disturbing and subversive..........2000-12-31

Forgot to add this to my Amazon list of "The Most Subversive Works Imaginable" (so check those out too!). This book is just mind blowing. I read it while taking a "History of Witchcraft" class in college. Anyone interested in animal rights, the tyranny of the courts and the solopsistic nature of "civilized" religion will be intrigued. It will make you seriously question the current practice of putting to death circus elephants who run amok, or pit bills who kill children. Very chilling to think that we have not, in some basic sense, escaped our mediaeval antecedents. Written in 1906, the text is a bit footnote-stodgy scholarly, but Evans brings the thoughts of philosophers, religious reasoners, and scientific pundits to bear on Europe's animal trials and how these slaughtered sparrows, garetted geese, and hung horses helped humans distinguish themselves from the animals. FASCINATING!

An excellent synopsis of the finer points of pool with all the nuances of the various games explained. In the course of all the valuable instruction the author also reveals quite a bit of her biography so that the reader learns not only to play the game properly but also some of the factors that make a champion. A worth while read and an excellent tool to use at the table as an additional learning aid.

Beginner-Intermediate book (yet for everyone).......2003-07-17

An excellent book for beginner-intermediate players and a good one for everybody else.
Very helpful section on how to select the equipment and well covered fundamentals. Will guide beginners through a well developed plan to start practicing and improving their game.
Intermediate players will find it helpful to review, analize and correct (if necessary) their actual game; furthermore, they will learn a lot from the second part of the book: "How to win". This second part covers important aspects of the player-game relationship, vital for staying focused and achieve your goals as a commited player.
The book is easy to read, for it is Jeanette who is talking to you from the beginning to the end. Most readers will find Jeanette's life quite inspiring, so even if you just want to learn a little bit more about her, you'll get what you're looking for.
Advanced - top players may not find this book as helpful, but they'll sure learn something from a world PRO player's advice and experience in tour. Becoming "the player to beat" is a process, and it takes more than the ability to make difficult shots, as you will discover.
After reading this book you'll find yourself playing a solid and better pool, with positive expectations to study and learn more about the game.

Great book. No nonsense real view at the pro tour from a top world class player; one whom has not lost sight of the road traveled. She is unafraid to say how unpolished she was as an upcoming beginner and tips on being a real sportsperson. All done with impeccable witt, charm and profound insight. My perspective and game have both reached a new level; In one week of reading this book I was so inspired to get off my butt, join a BCA league, start doing drills everyday, and decided not to waste time playing around. I now make my time at the table count. In three weeks my fellow players have gone from "He's so lucky" to "His game has really improved." Jeanette Lee is an inspiration as a player and a person. Thanks to a wonderful lady and I hope that the universe finds a way to repay/reward her for her many contributions. Many have helped at different stages of development; however, this is a very well written well rounded and humorus tome.

Yes, try counting the I's there... "I did this", "I did that". If you are a follower of Jeanette, go get it, her career is interesting. If you want to learn pool techniques, this one contains just a few interesting things and some trick shots: there are better books out there.

Rack'm Up!.......2000-08-01

This book is a trifecta. First, it is an excellent primer on the strategy, tactics and mechanics for novice pool players. The text explanations are re-enforced with excellent graphics.

Second, the book explores the life story and psychological make-up of a champion athlete/competitor; insightful and inspiring.

Finally, the book is well-written. The style is chatty and informal. Its an easy and pleasurable read.

Overall, good repair manual.......2005-10-23

The manual contains concise, step-by-step instructions on how to perform scheduled maintanance as well as indepth information on everything from engine teardown to clutch replacement. The primary thing lacking is better subject, chapter indexing. It would be great if the repair items referenced in the maintanance schedule had a page or chapter reference to go directly to. This would save alot of time.
