Book Description
Cost-benefit analysis is a widely used governmental evaluation tool, though academics remain skeptical. This volume gathers prominent contributors from law, economics, and philosophy for discussion of cost-benefit analysis, specifically its moral foundations, applications and limitations.
This new scholarly debate includes not only economists, but also contributors from philosophy, cognitive psychology, legal studies, and public policy who can further illuminate the justification and moral implications of this method and specify alternative measures.
These articles originally appeared in the Journal of Legal Studies.

Stories on renowned CEOs.......2006-01-27
A good book with summaries of the achievements of the few best CEOs in the corporate world.
Too condensed.......2005-05-10
Breezed through the book in 3 hours. To some extent it captures the main points. However, one would have a more wholesome experience by reading each of the individual books.
Condensed Books Version of Leading CEO Philosophies.......2004-03-17
If you have already read books by or about Michael Dell, Bill Gates, Lou Gerstner, Andy Grove, Herb Kelleher, Jack Welch and Sam Walton, you will probably think this is a two star book. If you are unfamiliar with any of these gentleman and their companies, you will find this book to be a helpful introduction that can direct you to more detailed reading on subjects that interest you.
What's new about this book is that Mr. Krames positions thought experiments in the sections about each CEO so you can address a business problem . . . and compare your answers to those the CEOs might have supplied. These are a cinch if you have read about the people involved, and are otherwise quite challenging. There are also helpful questions to test your organization's current applications of the concept at the end of each CEO's chapter.
What's not new about the book is any information that hasn't been written before about what the CEOs did in their own companies. I cannot remember seeing anything that I hadn't seen already. As a result, the book serves as a condensation of past learning. That's helpful for those who read little and have limited time. I didn't detect too many problems with the material. The consistent pattern of misfocus was concentrated in not in explaining enough about the context for the ideas. All of Jack Welch's big theme ideas were borrowed (as Mr. Krames points out for Sam Walton), and Mr. Welch was often quite late in picking up on and applying those ideas. Many of the initiatives in expanding service at IBM were well underway before Lou Gerstner arrived. I graded the book down one star for these slight misfocuses.
If you have the time, there's a better book either by or about each person than this one. Feel free to go to the better source!
As I finished the book, I began to realize that much study of great leaders is influenced by the size of their success . . . rather than the size of their accomplishment. If we were looking at leaders who had made great transformations, we would also be reading about Millard Fuller at Habitat for Humanity International, Jack Bogle at Vanguard, Mike Ruettgers at EMC, Richard Reese at Iron Mountain, Rob McEwen at Goldcorp, and Bernard Liautaud at Business Objects. I wonder what it will take before studies of best practices turn to those who are best at those practices.
Learn What Others Have Learned from Others...........2003-07-22
Krames has an excellent concept for this book: select several exceptional corporate leaders, examine each in terms of a specific objective to which both he and his organization are fully committed, and then explain what can be learned from HOW that objective is conceived. Of course, he could have selected a different seven...or perhaps add several others to those he did. Few can question the inclusion of Dell, Welch, Gerstner, Grove, Gates, Kelleher, and Walton. After explaining "What Made Them Great" in Part 1, Krames devotes a chapter to each in Part 2 as he explains those defining strategies which have made each exceptional. I commend Krames for including exercises which actively engage the reader's mind. For example, a brief scenario "that puts the reader in the seat of the [given] CEO." Krames offers a series of business situations which enable his readers "to test their business acumen against that of each of the seven subject CEOs." Each chapter is filled with various lessons as well as "Assess Your CEO Quotient" questions which can be asked both of the individual and of her or his own organization. Throughout his narrative, Krames also inserts brief comments from the works of business thinkers such as Peter Drucker and Philip Kotler so as to provide different perspectives on the given business issue.
Here are the seven CEOs and their respective defining strategies:
Michael Dell: Place the customer at the epicenter of the business model
Jack Welch: Create an authentic learning organization
Lou Gerstner: Focus on solutions
Andy Grove: Prepare the organization for [in italics] drastic change
Bill Gates: Harness the intellect of [in italics] every employee
Herb Kelleher: Create a performance-driven culture
Sam Walton: Learn from competitors, but remain faithful to the vision
Listing the CEOs and their respective defining strategies is easy to do. The great value of this book is derived from Krames's rigorous analysis of each CEO and defining strategy within the context of their respective organizations. The reader learns not only the WHAT but also the HOW and WHY. I agree with Krames that these seven as well as other exceptional leaders have much in common: an "outside-in" perspective; an evangelical leadership gene; an understanding of the critical role of culture; a passion to create next-generation products, processes, or solutions; a determination to implement the best ideas, regardless of their origin; and, meanwhile, a commitment to increase and thereby advance the leadership body of knowledge. This is an exceptional book about exceptional leadership, one which I highly recommend to business students and recent graduates as well as to those well along in their business careers. I also presume to insist that maximum value will be derived only if the various "Assess Your CEO Quotient" questions are answered with appropriate care and then rigorously evaluated. Stated another way, there is much to learn from the CEOs but perhaps even more can be learned from these self-audits.

Book Description
The Berne Symposium invited leading scientists of risk assessment research with transgenic crops on an international level in order to enhance the discussion regulators and members of the biotech industry. The goal was to determine the status quo and also to make progress in times of a first global spread of transgenes in agrosystems about risk assessment. The dialogue between scientists, regulators and industry representatives also revealed some lacunes of risk assessment research, which will have to be filled in the future: We still lack longterm experience, for which we will have to collect data with scientific precision. The symposium concluded asking for a risk-oriented longterm monitoring system based on critical science and hard data. This volume presents the discussion sessions as well as the scientific contributions and thus mirrors the risk assessment debate, based not on exaggerated negative scenarios but on critical science and hard data.

Viruses And The Evolution Of Life
ASIN: 0122203607 |
Book Description
Are infectious diseases caused by novel entities, viruses that have rapidly evolved into more pathogenic forms, or viruses that have crossed species divides and become more virulent in their alternative host? These questions and how new diseases such as AIDS emerged have prompted renewed interest in the ways viruses originated and co-evolved with their hosts.
Origin and Evolution of Viruses presents a full and clear description of general viral concepts and specific viral systems, and provides an excellent foundation to our understanding of how viruses emerged.
This unique and comprehensive work is essential reading for all researchers in virology, molecular biology and related areas, as well as evolutionary biologists interested in phylogenetic approaches to molecular evolution. The reader is taken on an illumination journey--in time and concepts--from the first primitive replicons to their present-day complex viral counterparts.
Apart from the obvious interest, as humans are potential hosts for these viruses, there is also a great deal of academic interest in the evolutionary aspects of this simple group of organisms, since information can be gained about the origin of stains/species and evolutionary patterns that might be applicable to higher species.
The book addresses:
* Nature and evolution of early replicons
* DNA and RNA viruses in both plants and animals
* Viral origin, mutation, and survival
* Antigenic variation in influenza virus
* Interplay between host evolution and DNA virus evolution
* Emergence of viral-induced diseases, e.g. hepatitis, influenza and HIV
Customer Reviews:
All the news that's fit to print.......2000-03-29
The Origin and Evolution of Viruses is the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of virus genetics available today. Starting with pre-biological evolution in the primitive RNA world a billion years ago and coming right up to date with present concerns about HIV and hepatitis C, this book covers all aspects of virus genomes. The treatment of all the subjects is covered in depth and given the space needed - this is not a superficial review of a few virus families - just what one would have expected from editors as well respected as these. Although in places the book would have benefited from a little colour in the illustrations, and the mathematical treatment of some subjects may be off-putting to the uninitiated, this is required in a book which will undoubtedly become the definitive source on this subject in years to come.

Needs Updating.......2005-08-23
This book gives a great overview of the hikes available in Ohio. However, I found this book to be very disappointing. The directions to the trailheads are often unclear and some of the features of the hikes have changed since the book was written (i.e. big trees have gone down). In addition, important information is lacking. For example, the fact that dogs are not allowed on many of the Ohio metro-park trails is not mentioned in the book. I think this book was probably excellent when first published, but times have changed and this book needs to be updated.
Confusing and Poorly Written.......2004-07-02
I give this hiking guide two stars because it has given me a lot of places to go hiking I would never have known about otherwise.
However, as far as actually using the guide to hike the trails, its virtually impossible. Ramey leaves out major forks and landmarks and does not tell you near enough about the trail's conditions or difficulty level. For example, today I tried to follow his route through the Glen Helen Nature Preserve. First, he tells you to start outside the museum at the stone terrace. There are two forks-one a major route down the stone steps that probably 99% of the park visitors take. The route he actually wants you to take is a small, side path that's almost overgrown and not as well maintained as the main trail. He never mentioned that it wasn't the main trail, so I went 1/2 a mile down that one before realizing I was wrong and had to climb the extremely steep stone steps all the way back up to the museum and ask for help. Then, this trail that he was talking about is pretty difficult and dangerous-portions go along a very narrow and rocky ridge where it would be easy to fall, and like I said before this is a rarely used trail. If you did run into trouble, it would probably be a long time before you were found. In my opinion, its not a trail that should be hiked alone even by an experienced woodsman, and Ramey never mentions these conditions at all. I also usually take my dog with me when I hike. Thankfully, I didn't on this occasion because the trail would be twice as dangerous with a pet to supervise, another thing Ramey neglected to mention.
In short, this book will give you ideas for good day trip hikes that you will enjoy, but do NOT rely on it for directions or safety. Research Ramey's route and get complete directions from park personnel before attempting any of these hikes.
Excellent Guide.......2003-05-04
Ramey knows all the obscure places to hike in Ohio and this book 's organization by region lets you see what is availible in your corner of Ohio. The milage is usefull, though the estimated hiking times are a little long in many cases. I may just walk too fast. I think this is book is essential to help find new places to hike, that would otherwise go unexplored. One problem that takes away a star is confusing directions to the trailhead and sometimes on the trail. I try to research places before I go so I have back up directions. However, I'm thrilled that he has written a second book with 50 more hikes.
Wonderful gift for the hikers in your families!.......2001-04-16
This book was a gift for my husband who is an avid hiker. Since our home is in Pennsylvania, he is very familiar with local forests, like Allegheny National Forest and Cook Forest. However, Ohio is less then a half hour away, and he needed more information about where to hike and where to take the Boy Scouts for both hikes and camping trips. We never realized Ohio had such wonderful and great sites until we saw this book. The maps and descriptions and information about difficulty of hiking for the various trails are great (except at least one map we used need updating for changes in the path). What is really enjoyed is the historical information given. Sometimes the Scouts need to be given some historical information to make the hiking more interesting, and history always aids in making memories. For an example in the section on Beaver Creek State Park there are a bunch of old locks and damns. One of the locks on the canal was named after the daughter of a worker on the canal who died. Her casket was buried in the lock, and when the worker was finished in Ohio he dug up the casket to take it back to his country. The ship sunk on the ocean and both the worker and the casket were never retrieved. This type of story makes the history of the time period more accessible to both the Scouts and to anyone who is hiking in the area. It certainly is a good reminder of how easy our lives are compared to the 1800's... Great reference book. Karen Sadler University of Pittsburgh
The best hiking in the Buckeye State.......1999-02-09
This book features some of the best hiking Ohio has to offer. The hikes range in distance from 1.6 miles to over 20 miles, thus accomodating hikers of every ability. Each hike contains a detailed description of the trail, a trail map, usually taken for the USGS maps, and directions to the trailhead. Ramey has a very warm, friendly writing style. In addition, his considerable experience in hiking and wildlife management makes Ramey the perfect guide for the trail. This book is an essential part of the library of any Ohio hiker.

Now, these columns have been updated and edited into a valuable guidebook for anyone planning a move into the tri-state area or already living in the region and considering a move to another community, as well as for browsers who just enjoy this popular and informative feature.
Will acquaint you with 115 metropolitan neighborhoods and suburban communities in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut
Consists of illuminating profiles on each locale, including safety, housing, schools, transportation, cultural and recreational facilities, and quality of life
Includes at-a-glance reference boxes that list such valuable data as median income of a community; median price of a single-family home, co-op, or condo; midrange rental rates; and commuting times and costs
Highlights which communities have the strongest school districts
Educates prospective home buyers on assessing the investment opportunities of purchasing real estate
Customer Reviews:
Book is grossly outdated.......2007-02-03
Book published in 1999, and is in ***serious*** need of updating. NY real estate has transformed immensely in the last 7 years (as have most major cities in the US). For that reason, I found the book to be of very little use to my move.
There are better guides out there.......2005-01-06
I was surprised to find out that areas I thought should be in this guide were not and that areas I wouldn't consider "around New York" were. To me, a neighborhood "in and around New York" might include some NJ towns, but to give as much time to the towns listed in NJ and CT, I think the book would more accurately be titled "all about popular communities in the tri-state area."
I'm disappointed I bought this guide.
Excellent coverage of NY suburbs.......2003-10-15
For all New Yorkers anticipating moving to the suburbs and for all out-of-towenrs anticipating moving in the city or in the metropolitan area -- this is an excellent guide to some of the more significant communities in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. It provides short descriptions of towns and communities within the mretropolitan area -- by reading the book one takes a journey, which leaves a much richer impression of New York and the surrounding area than one would have having just visited Manhattan.
Good but incomplete.......2003-05-04
I have lived in Manhattan for 13 years, and when it was time to buy I picked up this book. I found it fun to read and helpful in understanding for example the commuting times to each area featured, etc. However it does not include every neighborhood, in fact the area where we finally purchased (Ft. Greene Bklyn) isn't even included in the book. Buy this book used, along with the Zany's guide and you'll get the full picture without spending too much $.
