Book Description

What explains the national economic success of the United States, Britain, Germany, and Japan? What can be learned from the long-term championship performances of leading business firms in each country? How important were specific innovations by individual entrepreneurs? And in the end, what is the true nature of capitalist development?

The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Thomas K. McCraw and his coauthors present penetrating answers to these questions. Creating Modern Capitalism is the first book to explain for a broad audience the interconnections among technological innovation, management science, the power of entrepreneurship, and national economic growth. The authors approach each question from a comparative framework and with a unique triple focus on national economic systems, particular companies, and individual business leaders.

Above all, the book focuses on how specific entrepreneurs influenced the economic success of their countries: Josiah Wedgwood and Henry Royce in Britain; August Thyssen and Georg von Siemens in Germany; Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan, and the two Thomas J. Watsons in the United States; Sakichi Toyoda, Masatoshi Ito, and Toshifumi Suzuki in Japan.

The product of a three-year collaborative effort at the Harvard Business School, the book combines cutting-edge scholarship with a finely tuned sense of the art of management. It will engage general readers as well as those with a special interest in entrepreneurship and the evolution of national business systems.

The book covers the history of capitalism in great detail outlining the major turning points and how it has evolved to shape modern capitalism. A definite must read for whoever is interested in the nature of a capitalist society.

5 out of 5 stars Harvard MBA reviews his Professor's Works.......2000-05-06

This is an excellent collection of articles describing people, firms, and nations that succeeded in modern capitlism. Looking a the four most successful economies of the past two centuries: England, US, Germany, and Japan- Prof. McCraw's expertly edited and coherent collection of articles gives the reader a flavor of what made for great success in the capitalist economy. Each country has three articles: a firm, an entrepenure, and the country itself for a total of 12 articles each written by true experts. McCraw's understanding of capitlism is somewhat skewed toward the modern, however on the whole the book is extremely balanced. Of partiuclar note, is Prof. David Moss's article on the Deutch Bank which dicusses the succcess, failures, rewards, and dark side of capitalism.

    Book Description

Peter Fingar, author of the internationally acclaimed book, "Enterprise E-Commerce," joins forces with long time colleagues and industry veterans to go beyond e-commerce and on to the solid business fundamentals of the digital economy. The Internet is a whole new infrastructure for an entirely new way of doing business and competing. Economic transactions become frictionless as they move from "places" to "spaces." The crisp and insightful chapters make quick reads for CEOs, COOs, CTOs, CIOs, and line-of-business executives with little time for reading --distilling what management needs to be doing and thinking today to prepare themselves and their companies for the ride ahead.

Now that doing business on the Internet is reaching the mainstream, it's no longer e-business or e-commerce --it's just business and commerce. The authors take the mystery out of the deep and profound changes being ushered in by the ability to connect anyone-to-anyone or any computer-to-any-computer across the globe in real-time. The book signals the death of the e-hype and the beginning of the real work of building hyper-efficient, hyper-effective corporations that will continue to thrive in the years ahead.

The book systematically disassembles an enterprise's business processes, core competencies, and value chains; then reassembles them into dynamic customer-driven value webs and business ecosystems. Along the way, the authors explain the emerging business models of electronic marketplaces, peer-to-peer commerce, e-hubs, B2B exchanges, auctions, wireless applications, m-commerce, intelligent agent technology, B2B consortia, collaborative commerce, digital strategies, essential technologies and Web-services.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Impressive work on business Internet technology.......2003-01-02

The first half of this book is written by the listed authors, followed by six essays by thought leaders on peer-to-peer commerce, collaborative commerce, portals, adaptive strategies for B2B marketplaces, B2B integration, and visibility in the extended supply chain. Fingar and Aronica have done a commendable job of examining and explaining the changes to business models brought by information technology. The authors tell the reader what they think was wrong with the dot-com economy and what needs to be done to succeed in the high-tech economy in which the major risk is not getting Amazoned so much as getting "GE'ed". The book straightforwardly delves into the business model implications of electronic marketplaces, peer-to-peer commerce, B2B exchanges, e-hubs, e-services, component-based architectures, m-commerce, collaborative commerce, value chain optimization, and more. The authors agree with a growing number of others, including re-engineering gurus Hammer and Champy, that the key to success now lies in extended business relationships. The book does an excellent job of looking at the new generation of Internet technologies need to enable new business models and processes. You do not need to be highly technically inclined to follow this discussion which helps business leaders understand what they need to do to power ahead in the real innovation economy. One strength of the book is reflected in the subtitle which shows that the authors are concerned not with technology alone but with how it fits together with new technologies and new business models.

    5 out of 5 stars Peer-to-peer commerce, e-hubs, B2B exchanges, auctions, more.......2001-10-12

Doing business on the Internet is now a mainstream phenomena ranging from novice online entrepreneurs to established multinational conglomerates. In The Death Of "e" And the Birth Of The Real New Economy, Peter Fingar and Ronald Aronic effectively collaborate to survey and explain the rapid and fundamental changes affecting how individuals and companies are doing business in this age of the computer whether the transactions are across town or on the other side of the world. The authors explain the emerging business models of the electronic marketplace, peer-to-peer commerce, e-hubs, B2B exchanges, auctions, wireless applications, m-commerce, intelligent agent technology, collaborative commerce, digital strategies, and more. The Death Of "e" And the Birth Of The Real New Economy is very highly recommended, essential reading for corporate executives, economists, business managers, and anyone with an interest in how the Internet is impacting upon local, regional, national, and international economies and business practices.

5 out of 5 stars WHERE WE'VE BEEN, but more importantly WHERE WE ARE GOING!.......2001-08-20

This book covers what assumptions were wrong in the dot-com economy and refocuses on the realities of business in the technological, digital-savy economy. It covers all of the P2Ps: Powerpoint-to-Production, Path-to-Profitability, and finally, Peer-to-Peer technologies among others.

Explained are the educational takeaways from historical, leading edge developments of e-commerce, e-procurement and electronic marketplaces and how they can be applied based on the realized importance of extended business relationships. This book then addresses the appication of the newest developments, including peer-to-peer, collaborative commerce, and B2B integration within the supply chain in the currently developing (Real New) digital economy.

This book is recommended reading as it clearly details the digital past and provokes thought on how to continue to execute using new technologies within business today.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-08-17

Timing is perfect - this is a book for all to read.

5 out of 5 stars The e-business future just happened!.......2001-08-12

During the dot.com craze, companies worried about being "amazoned," asaulted by young zealots who threw out all the rules of the old economy. But now after the crash of the dot.coms, the pendulum has swung back too far and many companies are tempted to think, "I told you so, the Internet was just a fad."

Not so. The true Internet business revolution is just beginning, and no company will be spared its impact.

Companies shouldn't worry about being amazoned, they should worry about being "GE'ed," where under the leadership of CEO, Jack Welch, the single most impotant business tool of our time is being used to gain operational hyperefficiency, and strategically position GE's many companies to dominate their industries. No overnight magic. No quick fixes. But deep and structural changes in what it means to be in business and and what it takes to dominate industries are altered by the anywhere, anytime, anyone connections of the Internet. This is the focus of this book.

I thoroughly agree with Xerox's John Seely Brown and his conclusion that "The Death of e is unquestionably the birth of a new understanding of where the real new economy is headed." The book explains the business models for Value Chain Innovation and Collaborative Commerce. But it doesn't stop there. It goes on to clarify the need for a new generation of Internet technologies to enable these new business models.

Web-services, peer-to-peer computing, intelligent agents and integrated commerce resource platforms are clearly described so that even not-technical readers can grasp the next generation Internet technologies needed to conduct business at the network's edge. In addition to this solid introduction to the new business technologies, in-depth chapters written by industry thought leaders are devoted to the critical concepts: Peer-to-Peer Commerce, Enterprise Portals for Conducting Business on the Network Edge, Collaborative Commerce, Adaptive Strategies for B2B Marketplaces, Dynamic B2B Integration, Bringing Visibility to the Extended Supply Chain, and Understanding ebXML, UDDI and XML/edi. The result is a book with both vision and substance. The downside of this breakthrough book is that I wish it was 800 pages instead of 360, as it triggers the need to learn more and more about the new way of competing. It does, however, provide a pointer to its accompaning Web site at mkpress for further reading and investigation.

Because business and technology cannot be treated as separate issues in today's extremely competitive markets, the book's subtitle indicates the balance provided in its pages: business models, technologies and strategies for the 21st century. The Death of 'e' does not restate the "conventional wisdom of e-business" found in the many other books on the subject. Instead it breaks new ground to show business leaders what they should be thinking and doing to dominate in the real new economy.

5 out of 5 stars Embryology of a spectrum of organisms.......2000-11-27

This reference, suitable for the interested general reader, does not stress developmental biological principles of a few studied animals, but rather, presents the embryology of the range of multicellular organisms, from sponges to mammals to plants. The reference starts with an overview of metazoan development and larvae. Chapters on the development of mesozoans, poriferans, cnidarians, and ctenophorans then follow. The development of platyhelminthes and nematodes is then presented. The protostome coelomates are then discussed, with chapters on the development of nemerteans, sipunculans and echiurans, gastropods, annelids, arthropods, and lophophorates. The deuterostome coelomates are then discussed, with chapters on the development of echinoderms, tunicates, cephalochordates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles and birds, and mammals. The reference concludes with a chapter on plant life cycles.

4 out of 5 stars Good organism specific embryology text.......2000-05-07

This text is a great tool for anyone studying a particular organism. Rather than having a topical organization like most embryology texts, this book organizes chapters by organism. I found it very useful in my undergraduate research on the development of the sea urchin, because all of the information I needed was all in one place, whereas other embryology texts had me searching through chapter upon chapter to find what I was looking for. While it is not the most desirable text for learning the principles of embryology, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking at the development of a specific organism.

                        Book Description

David Liittschwager and Susan Middleton have established a reputation as the foremost chroniclers of the endangered natural world, combining rigorous methodology with aesthetic genius. Their work has afforded a vivid presence to rare animals and plants, many of which are threatened with extinction.

This groundbreaking portfolio of photographs encompasses the spectacular array of life-forms endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, including species either new to science or previously thought to be extinct.

Working with internationally renowned field biologists, Liittschwager and Middleton have ventured into remote native habitats and uncovered intact ecosystems where plants and animals still live in healthy relationship to one another. Their inaccessibility has helped protect these habitats from damage, even if it means that few people will ever have the opportunity to experience their richness and value directly.

Remains of a Rainbow combines Liittschwager's and Middleton's work with a powerful text (including a foreword by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer W.S. Merwin) to tell a story of rare and wondrous creatures and habitats and the people devoted to their preservation.

                        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2007-01-19

We first saw the hard-back version of this book in the museum on the island of Kauai. We thought it was a wonderful hardback book, but the museum tols us that it could cost $150.00 and was no longer available in any form. Luckily we found it on Amazon in soft cover (which is more than adequate) and for much less money. Truely a beautiful and informative book!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures but don't trust the text.......2006-11-08

The pictures of rare Hawaiian plants and animals in "Remains of a Rainbow" are pretty.
Pretty uninformative. And the text is largely nonsense.
The tipoff is "rich volcanic soil." When you see that in a book about Hawaiian natural history, you know right away that the author made no effort to learn his subject.
Just a few paragraphs away, we run into a rhapsody about the ancient Hawaiians' respect for the "unity and balance of the natural world." Large, slow, tasty birds excepted, of course.
The text by photographers David Liitschwager and Susan Middleton (assisted by Maui poet W.S. Merwin in an ill-informed introduction) is the verbal equivalent of kudzu -- an exotic, boring growth that smothers the interesting natural stuff underneath. Green goo.
It is understandable why the sponsors of "Remains" -- Environmental Defense and the National Geographic Society -- pander this way. It is not so easy to sell Hawaii's endangered plants and animals on their merits. After all, you and I are not likely ever to encounter most of them.
Which raises a question: If none of us is going to meet them except in the pages of a book, why bother to preserve them in nature? A small herb that was never known to exist until three or four years ago, and which was down to maybe five or 10 individuals then, is not going to alter the islands' ecosystem if it disappears.
One answer to that question is the last word in this book, taken from the writings of the late Maui biologist Wayne Gagne: "We are in pursuit of environmental quality, an ethical stance where our native biota is concerned, and for accepting each natural ecosystem on the planet for what it is . . . each a unique result of multifaceted ecological processes, past, present and continuing."
Fine words, but Liittschwager, Middleton and their sponsors obviously do not believe they can sell them. So instead of marketing Hawaii for what it is -- a unique place -- they peddle the ecological situation here, which is grim enough in fact, as part of a crisis "of declining biodiversity worldwide."
This is the "sixth great extinction" argument, one of those resilient popular ideas for which there is little evidence. People holding such views can find themselves in paradoxical situations.
Middleton, who blows the tin horn of mass extinctions louder than Liittschwager, writes about how after 15 years of working with endangered species, none she had encountered had yet gone extinct. Until Clermontia peleana.
But it turns out that while Clermontia peleana, a Big Island plant, probably is extinct in the wild, it is not yet quite extinct from the Earth.
Middleton does not seem to find any contradiction in simultaneous belief that the world is in the midst of the biggest extinction crisis in 65 million years and the fact that even a specialist in endangered species has yet to encounter one that passed on.
Considering that outsiders Liittschwager and Middleton had the cooperation of dozens of Hawaii's best biologists, they could easily have done better.
For one thing -- and this is another tipoff that the writers have not done their homework -- if they had listened to local experts, they would not have made such a big deal of Hawaii's biological diversity. To call islands with no amphibians, no reptiles, no pines and no ants diverse is perverse.
Instead of revealing and reveling in Hawaii's strange status -- its untypical ecological situation makes it the greatest natural laboratory of evolution -- Liitschwager and Middleton went for the picturesque and shallow.
Their pictures are gorgeous but don't tell much. They mostly were shot against solid backgrounds and display only a part of the organism. There is little hint of how each species functions within its community.
The misleading text of Liittschwager and Middleton is somewhat corrected by thumbnail descriptions of the 142 species illustrated, which were written by local authorities and are reliable.
"Remains of a Rainbow" represents the work of years, with the combined support for publishing from Environmental Defense, the National Tropical Botanical Garden and The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii; along with the on-the-ground help of NTBG, Maui Land & Pineapple Co. and other public-spirited groups.
In an afterword, David Wilcove, senior ecologist of Environmental Defense, writes that the survival of species in desperate straits will rely on "above all, public education."
"Remains of a Rainbow" is so far from contributing to public education that readers will end up knowing less about Hawaii after reading the book than they did before.

Now don't get me wrong. This is a wonderful book with beautiful photographs of Native Plants and Animals of Hawaii. The only thing wrong with the Softcover version is that the cover creases so easily. So if you want this book for your own personal library the Hardcover version is preferred. But if it is used as it is meant to be, as a coffee table book, than this is the book to have.

WOWS on every page. I gave this book to my Mother and Aunt for X-Mass. I wanted one for myself but ran out of cash (dag nab it) This is one of the most AMAZING nature books ever. If you need some brownie points give this as a gift, it will keep you out of the Dog House for YEARS.

                        5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Photographs.......2002-04-28

This book contains some of the most spectacular photographs you've seen. Close-ups even a pro would seldom come close to. It's unlikely you'll see many of these in your travels, but it feels like your walking through a Hawaiian tropical jungle as you page through the book. Many of the pages would look great framed for your walls. This is the perfect coffee table book, all of my friends have picked it up and marveled over the interesting plants and flowers, even the non-gardeners.

As a player, former hurler Jim Bouton did nothing half-way; he threw so hard he'd lose his cap on almost every pitch. In the early '70s, he tossed off one of the funniest, most revealing, insider's takes on baseball life in Ball Four, his diary of the season he tried to pitch his way back from oblivion on the strength of a knuckler. The real curve, though, is Bouton's honesty. He carves humans out of heroes, and shines a light into the game's corners. A quarter century later, Bouton's unique baseball voice can still bring the heat.

                          Book Description

Jim Bouton's Ball Four, recently selected by the New York Public Library as one of the "Books Of The Century," is being reissued in hardcover with a new, 50-page epilogue by the author.

In Ball Four: The Final Pitch, Bouton writes about the tragic death of his daughter, his reconciliation with Mickey Mantle, his son's Father's Day letter to the New York Times, his heartwarming return to Old Timers' Day at Yankee Stadium, his views on Major League Baseball, and his life today. In addition to the new epilogue, this beautiful collector's edition includes the original text, plus Bouton's 1980 and 1990 epilogues and a new Rogues' Gallery of 124 player photos.

Ball Four was first published in 1970 amid a storm of controversy. Bouton was called a Judas and a Benedict Arnold for having violated the "sanctity of the clubhouse." Baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn tried to force Bouton to sign a statement saying the book wasn't true. Almost everyone else, however, loved the book and serious critics called it an important document. Besides being hilariously funny, Ball Four changed the image of athletes and played a role in the economic revolution in sports. In 1975 for example, Ball Four was accepted as legal evidence against the owners at the arbitration hearing that led to free agency in baseball and, by extension, other sports.

Today Ball Four has taken on another role - as a time capsule of life in the sixties.

4 out of 5 stars Still funny after all these years.......2007-08-25

Still Hilarious the second time around. I've always been a baseball fan, coached by Dad and a family tradition. The humanizing of the players made me love it more. Never did understand the controversy, telling the truth about greedy, exploitive owners maybe? But that's true of all big business from ENRON on down the ladder (that was never a secret). Steroids? In this one it's greenies (uppers) pitchers use them in this iteration and made their sore arms and tired muscles disappear. The disappointing thing is no one seems concerned about the health issues. Sports and business all have a history of taking any advantage, cheating is in the eye of the beholder. Heck with records, throw them all out. Baseball is about fun, and parents interacting and enjoying their children.

This insider's account of playing in the big leagues is side-splitting entertainment. Bouton concentrates on the fun, the funny, and the amusingly odd aspects of what so many call "adults playing a boys' game." In his well-travelled career, Bouton played for the Yankees, Braves, Astros, and even the late, not-so-great Seattle Pilots. His personal contacts and anecdotes with many well-known baseball personalities (many still active as commentators, managers, and broadcasters) reminds us all that life, as well as sports, should be fun and we should keep an eye open for the humor in mundane siutations. Anyone with an interest in baseball will truly get more than a few chuckles from this well written book.

Jim Boutin was a very successful pitcher with the New York Yankees before injuring himself and having to become a knuckleball pitcher for the expansion Seattle Pilots. He wrote a diary of his comeback and it is nothing short of hilarious. The picture he paints of major leaguers is that of young boys who play pranks on one another and get their feelings hurt very easily. The only difference is these kids drive sports cars and pick up women during games. One scene in particular where they put talcum powder in another player's blow dryer makes me laugh every time I think of it. What makes the book so good is Bouton's natural way of writing so that the diary entires are not disjointed like Jim Brosnan's "The Long Season", but they have a flow to them. Even though I did not know many of the players he referenced in the book because it was before my time, it still remains a timeless classic.

5 out of 5 stars My All-Time Favorite Book (in 1971); Still Way Up There on the List.......2007-01-21

My prospective 12th grade English teacher wasn't too impressed with my choice of an "all-time favorite book", but in 1971, "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton was it. Growing up in central New York state, I'd been a Yankee fan for my entire childhood, and remembered Bouton pitching for the Yanks in the World Series in the early '60s. In "Ball Four", Bouton touches on those days, in the process demythologizing some of my heroes--Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford in particular--but I wasn't bitter; I was fascinated with the stories of how my athletic heroes behaved as human beings.

Even better were Bouton's diary accounts of his days as a reliever with the Seattle Pilots, a one-year team that quickly moved to Milwaukee and exists today as the Brewers, and with the Houston Astros (featuring future Hall of Famer Joe Morgan and managed by Harry "The Hat" Walker". How else would I remember that the manager of that team was Joe Schulz, a crusty old baseball lifer whose two favorite "words" would be sure to get this review removed from view (the first started with F and ended with T, the second started with S and ended with K). As an ex-Cardinal, Schulz exhorted his players to "get the win and go in to "pound that B...weiser". As a 16-year old I also viewed with great hilarity the crude humor of ballplayers on the road--a phrase I still use today came from a ballplayer told that a game would start at 9:30 a.m, "Nine thirty? H..l, I'm not done throwing up by that time of day!" After a bumpy bus ride, another player offers to buy the bus. I'll leave it to you to guess why. In response to Walker's niggling managerial style, the Astros composed their own theme song "It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be an Astro" ("if we win our game each day, what the f... can Harry say/it makes a fellow proud to be an Astro!")

Bouton also takes us through his pitching season--outing by outing--you get a feel of how seriously ballplayers evaluate each game (at least Bouton did), and at Bouton's level of "last man in the bullpen", how tenuous their hold on a major league position is. Maybe there was more to this now famous book than Ms. Trapnell gave it credit for in 1971.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for pronunciation and beginners.......2007-05-16

This is a very nice book for people who are completely new to the language and for people that do not have a good grasp of the pronunciation of the language. This book along with a good student English/French dictionary is a good place to start for a beginner.

4 out of 5 stars Good way to explore more languages.......2005-10-12

I started with Berlitz Self-Teacher Spanish. Having completed the Spanish text, I have decided to expand my study to French.

Although there is no updated since 1949, this is still the good source of any language study. I like this series because French and Spanish texts share the same contents for many parts so I can compare words and phrases with both books. This is the good way not to forget (and not to be confused with) what I have already learnt.

It would be nice if we could get the CD version. Any update would be more appreciated. But this book definitely works for the purpose afterall.

I would not advice this book for somebody with advanced level of French. But it may definetely help out someone with a begginer level.

                                1 out of 5 stars Over-hyped .......2005-04-08

These reviews are all really suspicious to me....

when someone wins an election with one-hundred percent we call that...fraud.

Anyway, I've seen this book and it ain't all it's cracked up to be.

The consumer should be aware that Berlitz, INC has become a notorious exaggerator of its own worth. Critiques of Berlitz-related products are often so gushy and ecstatic with delight that they leave the reader believing that they could only have been written by Berlitz staff.

Berlitz products are notorious among foreign-language education professionals for their lack of exercises, their scanty grammatical explanations, their inflated prices, and the flashy pseudo-science of their famous "method" (a gussied-up listen-and-repeat scheme). The informed consumer will take the time to compare Berlitz "method" products with other, often university-related course supports. The focus of university-generated products is generally less on the marketing and the cultivation of repeat-buyers and more neutrally, disinterestedly geared towards the linguistic enrichment of the student.

The business traveller is particularly ill-served by methods that promise enormous bounds in fluency across short time periods. These travellers often find themselves seduced by grandiose promises--often while under high-stress conditions [foreign travel, foreign-language presentation preparations]--and end up rather disappointed for having been duped.

Any "method" that claims to produce fast, effortless results is suspect. Most "methods" are marketing illusions dreamed up by sales teams.

The Berlitz method, in my opinion and in that of many language professionals, is the foreign-language-learning equivalent of a get-rich-quick scheme. I have been disappointed by their products and teaching in every case I have ever crossed WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

5 out of 5 stars thank you berlitz.......2005-01-22

This book is wonderful. Even if you know no French and are willing to work diligently and speak out loud, (which admittedly isn't easy!) you will find sooner rather than later, you'll be able to converse, en francais as it were. The lessons are simple and direct, well structured and the answer keys are accurate, I would also recommend parents to buy this for their school kids and a copy for themselves and join the fun. The structure of the book will also help you when you have completed it and ready to move on to an intermediate level of reading and speaking!

The early chapters on handling paint and the brush seems to really get to the point. The section on "moisture control" really is a must read for anyone still struggling with this aspect of watercolor painting. I recommend this book all the time to anyone who asks about good reading material. Too bad it is out of print. A must for the watercolorist library!

This is a great book that addresses problems that I haven't seen addressed in other books. He is also encouraging to the painter who may not feel they have a lot of talent but still want to paint. He feels that all people with the desire can do it. I got the book from the library, and loved it so much I purchased it. I've heard his videos are great too.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific how to book.......1998-10-01

This is one of the best books teaching watercolor painting. I've bought many. He stresses that the journey (learning) is more important than the goal (being a great painter). He's an excellent teacher and his step by step illustrations are some of the best. A great help to me.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best watercolor instruction books on the market.......1997-02-25

After reading at least 30 watercolor instructions books, this one goes to the top of my list. Couch covers everything from the basics (from equipment to how you actually get paint on to the paper) to the essential guidelines of design and composition. These (sometimes boring) subjects are covered in an easily-digestible, easily-usable manner, making it exciting to get to your next painting and apply what you have read. The book includes a really good description of how the painter is a "shape maker, symbol collector and entertainer" and numerous step-by-step examples of painting basic landscape components (trees, sky, rocks, water). The book is upbeat with a wonderful sense of play and humor running through it -- plus the reader is given dozens of examples of Tony Couch's own marvelous watercolor paintings, as well as examples from eight other superb watercolorists. The gallery of paintings alone is worth the price of the book (which, by the way, is about 30 pages longer than most watercolor instruction books -- so you really get your money's worth!)
