Book Description
Game theory is a key element in most decision making processes involving two or more people or organizations. This book explains how game theory can predict the outcome of complex decision making processes, and how it can help to improve negotiation and decision-making skills. It is grounded in well-established theory, yet the wide-ranging international examples used to illustrate its application offer a fresh approach to what is becoming an essential weapon in the armory of the informed manager. The book is accessibly written, explaining in simple terms the underlying mathematics behind games of skill. It analyzes more sophisticated topics such as zero-sum games, mixed-motive games, and multi-person games, coalitions and power. Clear examples and helpful diagrams are used throughout, and the mathematics is kept to a minimum. Written for managers, students and decision-makers in every field.

A Solid Effort!.......2004-04-22
Anthony Kelly's book will help you take a step back from the day-to-day fray, and be more strategic in your approach to solving problems. He explains that during conflicts, people operate in their own perceived best interests. Sometimes, combatants can find a common ground, but sometimes the conflict is a "zero-sum game," with a winner and a loser. To come out on top as a player or manager, take advantage of the approaches and concepts of game theory. A word of caution, this volume relies heavily on formulas and decision-trees that may be beyond the ready grasp of non-technically minded managers. For those who want to put emotion aside and think strategically, however, reading this book is a rational move. We recommend it to those with mathematical or analytical skills, and finds that it will prove useful even to non-analysts who want to learn the fundamental concepts of game theory.

Volumes 1 and 2 of Transgenic Plants assemble important information on transgenic crops which has appeared scattered in many different publications. These two volumes are a significant milestone in plant/agricultural biology, promote the practical application of recombinant DNA technology, and assist in transforming the agricultural industry.
Book Description
Incorporating recent dramatic advances, this textbook presents a fresh and timely introduction to modern biophysical methods. An array of new, faster and higher-power biophysical methods now enables scientists to examine the mysteries of life at a molecular level. This innovative text surveys and explains the ten key biophysical methods, including those related to biophysical nanotechnology, scanning probe microscopy, X-ray crystallography, ion mobility spectrometry, mass spectrometry, proteomics, and protein folding and structure. Incorporating much information previously unavailable in tutorial form, Nölting employs worked examples and 267 illustrations to fully detail the techniques and their underlying mechanisms. Methods in Modern Biophysics is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, researchers, lecturers and professors in biophysics, biochemistry and related fields. Special features in the 2nd edition: - Illustrates the high-resolution methods for ultrashort-living protein structures and new results for 6 proteins. - Provides information on self-evolving computer programs - a method for the solution of extremely complex phenomena.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent source for latest biophysical methods.......2005-05-17
This book presents a review of various biophysical methods, most of them developed or significantly revised in recent years, for the use of studying biomolecules. The author illustrates each technique with lots of figures (makes me to remember the old phrase "one figure is worth more than thousand words") and also provides a good bibliography for each technique. The book also assembles the information that is hard to find from a single source. I enjoyed reading the book and recommend it for beginners as well as advanced users.
Highly recommended.......2004-10-06
I highly evaluate this book as an important contribution to biophysics. There are many students interested in this book.
Lots of novel methods!.......2004-06-06
The book presents a lot of novel methods, in particular those related to biophysical nanotechnology and microwave technologies, that cannot be found in other textbooks.
A necessary guide for biophysics/biochemistry students.......2004-05-15
This is an outstanding overview of the entire field of biophysics methods. The textbook presents the most important biophysics topics including fascinating biophysical nanotechnology and proteomics methods. The author uses lots of figures and does a marvelous job describing complex issues in fairly easy to comprehend terms. It is fun to read this book.
A fantastic textbook for Biophysics.......2004-04-30
This is a fantastic textbook on biophysics methods and techniques. I found it particularly useful for those who are theoreticians and computer modelers. As a theoretical biophysicist, I work on protein folding, protein structure prediction and ligand-receptor binding studies, and I was constantly looking for a book which contains all important and up-to-date experimental methods and techniques to better understand our experimental colleagues' work. Now I found it! If you are also looking for a book for introductory as well as advanced topics in biophysics methods, this book might be the one you are looking for. It essentially covers all the new and important subjects of this field. I found the chapters about proteomics, ion mobility spectrometry, and mass spectrometry, particularly interesting. I will try to include some of the material in the course "Biophysical Chemistry"(a graduate level course) that I am co-teaching, and I will strongly recommend this book to those who are interested in biophysics.

Book Description
This second volume in Modern Methods of Plant Analysis, New Series concentrates on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, a powerful technique that is now being used for plant studies in a major way. This is the first time that a series of chapters by leading experts on the application of NMR to plant cells has been assembled in a single volume. The methods are described in detail so that even beginners can apply them directly in the laboratory. Topics include general metabolism in higher plants and fungi, intercellular pH, energy status, DNA structure analysis, multiple quantum two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy, chloroplast orientation, rubber analysis, and the use of NMR to determine pollen viability. This volume should provide not only an excellent practical guide to the possibilities of NMR application to the plant sciences, but also give impetus to its future use.

Good Overview, Nice Photos.......2001-01-06
I picked this book up in Smithsonian Gift Shop. It is pocket sized and has 1 page on about 220 species. Each page has a description of the snake and a good (but small) color photo. It then gives a brief blurb about average size, distribution, habitat, diet, breeding and similar species. Overall, a nice little book - well worth the money. You won't get much detail on any individual species, but there are some neat facts on the overview pages. Well worth it for someone with a basic interest in various snakes around the world -- even if just for the photos. Don't expect a lot of new info. While there are not too many details, they seem to have most of their facts right.

Book Description
A fascinating look at the game within the game by former Dallas Cowboy fullback and Fox Sports analyst Daryl "Moose" Johnston, with professional journalist Jim Gigliotti.
Customer Reviews:
A viewer's guide to watching football.......2007-09-19
Daryl Johnston, "Watching Football: Discovering the Game Within the Game"
This book provides an insider's view of the game. DJ brings his unique perspective as both a former player and a current analyst for Fox Sports, and fans are the beneficiary.
More a viewer's guide to the game than a general overview, he covers basics like rules, the uniform, definitions, offense, defense and special teams.
The 250p paperback is published by Insider's Guide and lists at $14.95.
Stick with TV, Moose..........2006-03-31
Moose was a bona fide NFL player who played during the glory days of the Cowboys. And he may be a decent TV analyst, I can't say that I've ever heard him on the air. But a writer he is not, and he should have gotten a better ghost writer than Gigliotti and where the hell was the editor of this book? I bought this (even paid the full Barnes & Noble price)thinking that it would give me better insight into being a more astute observer of the game, but the Moose fell short of this goal. He is way short on facts and data and way long on nostalgia and personal opinion. And I'm not sure that he ever gave one hint about what to look for while actually watching a game.
However, on the plus side, I did learn a few tidbits, which I am assuming are true: the meaning behind the name 46 defense, explanation of the free quick rule and describing the passing tree.
Otherwise this book is very basic and superficial and a serious fan/student of the game would be mostly bored reading it.
a disappointment.......2005-12-04
Unless you are an avid fan of Mr. Johnston, this book will be a real let down. It has little of interest and did nothing to enhance my viewing of the game.
Thought I knew alot about the game, but this taught me more.......2005-11-29
Really enjoyed this book. I like the game and rather watch it on TV rather than at a stadium.
And now, I can enjoy it even more through Johnston's concise, analytical prose. I think he's one of the better football analysts, he makes the game come alive and points out things you might have missed, or not understood.
Check out this book and you'll have a superb read while increasing your football comprehension.
A mixed bag.......2005-10-26
I undoubtedly had some unrealistic expectations, or at least hopes, going into this book. I've always marveled at how a John Madden can watch a play, in real time, and then immediately turn around and explain the particular play that it was, and the one player who blew his assignment. To achieve that, I'm sure, takes years of watching plays, day in and day out I expect -- getting your brain trained in the visual pattern recognition.
After reading "Watching Football" I understand more of what to watch for, but alas -- no miracle -- I still can't both watch the football, and keep track of what everbody else on the field is doing. ;)
This book is a bit of a strange beast. You definitely have to be goal-oriented in reading, as it's not an especially fun read. It's structure is more like a how-to book. I was a bit surprised to find liberal doses of personal reminiscing sprinkled throughout the book, and especially at the beginning. Certainly, some anecdotes were used to illustrate points, but on balance, it seemed an odd cross of autobiography and how to.
As for the actual didactic value, I did get some better understanding from reading the book, but still it lacked the depth I would hope for. The beginning starts out simply enough, explaining the very basics that anybody who already watches football would know. But by the time you get to zone coverages, there's just a single diagram with some arrows for each variation, and not enough explanation, at least for me to understand the essence of how the players would actually move in order to execute the coverages.
In the end, though, I do understand more of what to look for. If you endeavor to better understand the game, this book is probably a reasonable first step in your process of learning.
Book Description
One of the most comprehensive books on the Hebrew language, it covers all aspects, including word roots and derivatives, prefixes and suffixes, syntax and pronunciation. Filled with features, like historical background on the Hebrew language and grammar, this is an indispensable resource for the study of ancient languages and Biblical texts.
Customer Reviews:
It's all Hebrew to me.......2007-09-07
Being a Catholic Priest, I studied Greek and Latin in my Seminary training, some years ago now. I always had a desire to learn Hebrew so as to be able to read the Old Testament in the original language. Whenever I picked up a "Learn Hebrew to easy way" book, I saw refences to Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar and thought, "this must be the book to have on this subject!"I must say that I am only in the early stages of working through this very thorough text, but so far I believe that it is a classic and will be worth the effort of reading it.
An Exhaustive and Exhausting Book.......2007-07-11
Despite how old this book is, it is still the most exhaustive book on Hebrew grammar and Hebrew scripture. I constantly use this book as I study my Hebrew text.
This book is very hard to search. The scripture index is not based on the page you will find something, but in which section. So the index wil get you close, but you really need to search to find what you are looking for. The type gets very small in places and makes searching a pain.
This is not the first book a Hebrew student should buy. However, this book should be one that you eventually get.
Seminary Textbook.......2007-05-29
This is the grammar we used in Seminary, and I detested it then. But, now that I'm older and reading it for pleasure and not for a grade, I realize just how well this book is written, how well it is organized, and just what a gem it is. If you have a 'working' knowledge of Hebrew and want to know a more, this book will help you. If you are a Hebrew scholar and want to have a reference tool, this book is excellent. The only person who shouldn't buy this book is that person who is just starting to learn Hebrew. There are other resources available for the beginning student -- you should wait until you have a 'decent' knowledge of Hebrew before you get this book. But, if you want to continue your studies and get one of the best grammar references available, this is it.
Peace Profound,
Neshamah
Best Hebrew Grammar Book.......2007-05-26
For those who have a strong interest in learning biblical Hebrew, this is the book to buy. There is no other book that teaches you how to correctly and effectively learn biblical Hebrew. Sometimes it is hard to follow; but, he completely breaks down the language and gives the reader vital details about how the language works. It is best that you already have the basic knowledge of Hebrew before reading Gesenius so you can follow the readings better.
NOT for the undergraduate.......2006-12-28
The language experts give this book a good rating, but I, the undergraduate, see little value in this book. The author's native tongue doesnot seem to be english. The book focuses on things like why "their" is an execption to the rule "i before e except after c". This book is far from simple to understand.

Book Description
This second English edition of Gesenius' Grammar, edited and enlarged by the late E. Kautzsch, stands alone as the definitive reference work on Hebrew grammar. It is revised in accordance with the 28th German edition by A.E. Cowley, and includes a facsimile of the Siloam inscription.
Customer Reviews:
Poor edition of a great book.......2007-05-17
I recently bought Oxford's hardcover edition and its a damn shame that for the price of the book what you get is a glued photocopy of the original edition. I won't get into the content of the book. Gesenius' work is legendary for those interested in the subject. But I do warn those interested in this edition of what they'll get. It is sad that such a fine publishing house as OUP is getting into the habit of selling expensive editions of books that basically amount to a cheap reprint of the original. Instead of advertising it as expensive hardcover editions they should be more frank about what they are really delivering.
Reference piece of note but difficult to read.......2006-01-25
This grammar book would have been the best available. It has everything one needs - simple word forms, complex usages and useful tables. It has a syntax section (a must for really understanding a language) and groups the different parts in a logical and straightforward manner.
It is fully comprehensive and I use this book as the standard reference.
However it fails in other respects. It takes a lot of time to get used to the layout (I've been using it for 4 years and I still find it hard to look up information). Its notes, however useful, are not as clearly distinct from the text. And when I wanted a simple translation of the form under discussion, I found it difficult to find.
The Tables at the back were very useful, but the noun-forms, also central to understanding, were in the middle, and not in the back.
I found the print also difficult to read. But perhaps this was due to my edition, which is older.
Beginners and even Scholars would probably find: "A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew" by Jacob Weingreen more useful, and user-friendly.
Personally, I use both, together with Hebrew Syntax an Outline
by Ronald J. Williams and 501 Hebrew Verbs as a set that would be most helpful. A good Dictionary such as The Complete Hebrew-English Dictionary by Reuben Alcalay is a must as well.
Unfortunately I would really like to give This complete and comprehensive Hebrew grammar a higher rating - 4/5 stars, but the layout and difficulties in reading add to the fact that the english is out-moded (written in the early 1920s), and is really for scholars than the layman. It is a very comprehensive, detailed reference piece however, and for scholars these issues are less of a problem.
Standard Reference Grammar for BH in English.......2003-08-07
Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar is the standard reference grammar in English for Biblical Hebrew. Anyone serious about reading and translating Hebrew Bible will need a copy on their shelf for reference, when things get difficult. The book is well indexed, so navigation is not too difficult. There is also a scriptural index, so finding entries that directly relate to a passage that you are working on may be found. The verbal paradigms are in the back of the book. They are complete. Given the age of the text, the language used to describe grammatical and syntactic features may be unfamiliar to people trained in modern linguistics.
All this said, I like Waltke and O'Connors' Introduction to Biblical Hebrew Syntax better. I frequently end up consulting multiple sources when really stuck, so it pays to have both.
By far the best in Hebrew Grammars.......2003-03-25
I have used many other grammars in my studies of Biblical Hebrew and none have been as helpful as this one. I would seriously consider selling the others if they were not required texts for my future studies. His handling of Hebrew and cognate languages will give a student a much deeper knowledge than many of the modern grammars targeted at a lazier student audience.
A "Must Have," and Worth All the Work Needed to Read It.......2002-01-16
Whether one is taking formal education classes or is seeking to read Biblical Hebrew on his/her own, this text will have to become part of the personal library. There are grammatical issues in Hebrew that are never explained in 1st-year grammars, but one will need to know them, and Gesenius provides this.
I recommend reading this book from cover to cover at least twice: once as a studious overview, secondly as a serious study, maybe putting notes into your Hebrew text. But the following explanation is needed: there are portions of information that do not have to be known too thoroughly to understand what one is reading in the Hebrew Tanach. Much of the information is analytical more from a linguistics standpoint. In other words, don't think you need to know everything in the book. But embedded within the optional information is other information one will need; so all the book must be read.
The book can be broken down into 3 levels:
1. That which every serious student must know. This would mean that most of the book needs to be known, with probably placing details into your Hebrew text for reference. This text is especially needed for grammatical variations not found in basic grammars (e.g., a rare form of the infinitive used with intransitive verbs; the fem. objective affix seemingly having no antecedent, but actually having a previous phrase or clause for its antecedent, regardless of gender, Gen. 15:6); the ignoring of gender at times, etc. Like any other language, Hebrew has grammatical structures that have "broken the rules."
2. That which is interesting to know and which may or may not really help in translation. This would, for instance, include some of the heavier details concerning rules for vowel changes, etc.
3. That which surely does not need to be known to read and understand Hebrew. This information is for people who are grammar geeks, who need to know how things work even though not knowing this information will not hurt anyone's communication skills. Much of this has to do with comparing Hebrew with other Semitic and European languages. It's interesting, and in other fields, it is important; but for the Hebrew reader, this tends to be ineffectual in helping the student who is learning to read Hebrew. Don't be discouraged by this stuff as you read the book; read it and move on.
Just as with English, volumes can be written on how a language works, and Gesenius provides this. But no one needs to know the most intricate circuitry to communicate. For instance, speakers in English say, "If he were to go, I would stay." The rule for having a plural verb for the singular pronoun is: "3rd person singular subjunctive uses a plural verb." Most people don't know this, and yet they speak correctly. The same is true with Hebrew: You can get overloaded with the details, and yet without those details a student of Hebrew won't have a problem.
As one progresses in the book, the information becomes more practical in a sense, moving away from all the technical analysis of language and moving into what is really needed for anyone to do translation.
But, it is also true that while all this information should be reviewed because of its historical important in the process of understanding Hebrew, it is also necessary to know that there are significant points in this grammar that have been proven to be untrue. Such updated information can be found in Waltke & O'Connors "Introduction to Biblical Hebrew Syntax," another, and even more so, must have.
