Book Description
Innovation is an ancient art, may be as old as 500,000 years, but managing innovation is a relatively young management technique, only a few decades old, and has received much less attention than other aspects of innovation such as creativity, entrepreneurship or venturing. This book is not about providing a series of recipes on innovation management or a collection of case stories on how to do innovation or not. The few examples given are well known innovations from (Shell) history and all of them have been described before in the literature. However, this book does not focus on the brilliant result or failure of the innovations, but on the process of innovation in order to understand the features of a well-managed innovation effort.
The book has been written around six main themes:
1. Understanding innovation as a business process and how it has developed through history.
2. For a manager it is essential to appreciate the fundamental difference between inside- and outside-the-box innovation; each one needs its own specific management process.
3. The main roles of the innovation manager are managing the innovation funnel, executing the innovation strategy and optimising the value of the innovation portfolio.
4. Entrepreneurship is the key resource in innovation and the right conditions have to be created for it to flourish in large companies.
5. The value of innovation can be assessed as an option value and in creating intellectual capital for the company.
6. Integrating sustainable development in the innovation process requires changes in the management process, in the assessment and valuation of innovation, and in the interaction with the stakeholders.
· Extremely practical book, based on hands-on experience and written to a high academic standard.
· Provides unique and novel perspectives into the innovation process.
· One of only a few titles that discuss how to manage the innovation process.
Customer Reviews:
A very dense and straightforward book on innovation.......2005-05-31
I am a frequent reader on books, especially on the subject of innovation, and I have often noticed how the reader readily can browse through the volume filling pages that the author has put in to reach the level of 256 pages or whatever he is paid for. This book is unbrowsable - every page is filled with readworthy items and it is quite easy to transform the findings to your own company. This book fits well with the first part of an IRI project seen in the book "Radical Innovation and how companies can outsmart upstarts" as well as with the article in the Research & Technology Management magazine from IRI (Jan/Feb 2005) "Building a radical innovation competency" covering the four subsequent years of the project.
From the inside out.......2005-03-16
Jan Verloop's book contains so much valuable information and yet is easy to digest. He writes as an insider and as such it is brimming with years of real industry experience.
An inside-out look at innovation, a must read.

Book Description
Modularity -- the attempt to understand systems as integrations of partially independent and interacting units -- is today a dominant theme in the life sciences, cognitive science, and computer science. The concept goes back at least implicitly to the Scientific (or Copernican) Revolution, and can be found behind later theories of phrenology, physiology, and genetics; moreover, art, engineering, and mathematics rely on modular design principles. This collection broadens the scientific discussion of modularity by bringing together experts from a variety of disciplines, including artificial life, cognitive science, economics, evolutionary computation, developmental and evolutionary biology, linguistics, mathematics, morphology, paleontology, physics, theoretical chemistry, philosophy, and the arts.
The contributors debate and compare the uses of modularity, discussing the different disciplinary contexts of "modular thinking" in general (including hierarchical organization, near-decomposability, quasi-independence, and recursion) or of more specialized concepts (including character complex, gene family, encapsulation, and mosaic evolution); what modules are, why and how they develop and evolve, and the implication for the research agenda in the disciplines involved; and how to bring about useful cross-disciplinary knowledge transfer on the topic. The book includes a foreword by the late Herbert A. Simon addressing the role of near-decomposability in understanding complex systems.
Customer Reviews:
Too Modular.......2006-05-10
This is a very interesting book. Or at least, it's a book about a cluster of very interesting topics, and occasionally contains interesting insights about these topics.
The problem is that the book is a bit too modular - the chapters don't work very well together. Every author seems to have his own concept of modularity. As several of the chapters are primarily concerned with defining modularity, this could be taken to be a good thing, but it isn't. The simple reason is that many of the concepts of modularity are simply not interesting to many readers. For me, Calabretta's chapter was very interesting, as well as Simon's introduction and some other chapters, but the chapters on modularity in art and in animal skeletons were just plain uninteresting. (Which is not to say that they are bad chapters in themselves, they are probably higly relevant to some people.)
Given that the book is likely to contain just a few chapters that interest you, I think the price is a bit too high for it to be worth buying.

Magnificent color photographs, along with species accounts which include descriptions, habitats, similar species, natural history and range charts, identify all of the lizards, turtles, and crocodilians found in Florida. Detailed drawings emphasize characteristics which aid in identification.
Customer Reviews:
Informative-useful to the beginner and intermediate herper.......2002-09-25
This book provides color photographs as well as a range map for each species listed. The detailed drawings on locomation and the different methods of movement also helps in understanding how snakes do what they do. The brief section on the workings of serpentine anatomy provide relevant information for those interested in the natural history and evolution of snakes. It also provides information for many of the sub-species found in Florida, which is something that other general field guides tent to overlook. This book came highly recommended by an expert florida herpetologist. The beginner will find the detailed photographs as well as the range maps a must for identifying the many species of snakes found throughout Florida. The intermediate hobbyist will find the taxonimic listing as well as natural history indespensible in the field when trying to locate the elusive varieties of serpents. This book is really somewhat of a natural history text, as well as a field guide wrapped up in one. Its small size makes it easy to carry into the field, where it would be used most. It could be considered slightly dated, as the classification of some of the snakes as endangered or species of special concern has changed, the identification information has not. I bought the book used, so an updated version may be out.
An excellent field guide for FL residents & snake lovers........2001-03-17
Provides color pictures, descriptions, range maps, and habitat information for each species of snake in Florida. The authors also describe similar species, natural history, and reproduction for each species. The book contains information (photos/description) of various FL environments (e.g. mangroves, cypress swamps, hammocks, pine flatwoods). Charts included provide abundance of each species in various environments. Good basic description on snake senses & locomotion. I plan to buy parts 2 & 3!
Excellent field guide........2000-04-08
Allowed me to positively identify many species in my area -- far better descriptions and pictures than any other book I've seen.

the most ruest Korean girl at Peabody.......2006-10-04
Throw away the book buyback guides! Finally there is a tell-it-all midge book that you will treasure forever. I stumbled across this book as I was perusing the aisles at my local bookstow and knew immediately that I had to have it. Aside from the blatantly Jacobsonian title, this book is your definitive guide to Midge.
Midge assistance and special orders was always something I left to my coworkers. Midge can be very confusing and frustrating. Seeing the many faces of Midge, the runess birthed from the dark underbelly of that infamous Baltimore music conservatory, had left me intrigued. Now having read this book, and having looked closely at the Midge under magnification, I am beginning to see the light from dark. Of course, one can not be expected to explain why none the currently available editions of the Brandenburg Concertos are suitable. That kind of psychological dissection could take years to explain, so I do not fault the authors for this shortcoming. This book is TOP SHELF!
The midge, tied and true.......2002-11-20
Mr. Holbrook has done a very fine job of covering how to tie midge pupa, larva, spinners and (a few) winged adults down to size 32 hooks.
This book shares space on my tying shelf beside Darrel Martin's Micropatterns (it adds nicely to Martin's fine work), Leeson & Schollmeyer's Fly Tier's Benchside Reference, Oliver Edwards' Flytyers Masterclass (the English use flytyer where the US uses fly tier), Hughes' Trout Flies and Mariano's In the Ring of the Rise.
I rank it with these other fine books because it belongs there. If you have an interest in tying midge patterns and want to learn how Mr. Holbrook came to his patterns, this book reveals all. If you want to tailor your midge patterns to your local Dipterans, you can find out how to do that as well.
This is not a book on taxonomy and it is not intended to be (and a guide to Dipterans is WAY beyond all but the Ph.D. taxonomists ..the Dipterists and Dipteran Journals are turning to genome studies over the morphological classification - do a search on Dipterists for more information).
The collection, observation and macrophotography guides are excellent for beginner to advanced collectors.
This is a must have book! Ed Koch is partially responsible for the author's addiction: good on you, Ed!
More Patterns Than Tactics.......2002-08-26
As long as the reader understands that this book doesn't cover a lot of tactics, it's a highly useful guide. The focus is on patterns--how to get the colors right, how to tie them, and what they imitate.
There's not much on casting technique or how to actually use them on the stream, but the material that is there is great. It has really useful patterns that are surprisingly easy to tie.
It will open your eyes to tying great midge patterns.......2002-01-15
Midge fishing and tying midge patterns was always something I left to somebody else - very intimidating. Where do you start and what do you fish and why? Talking to Ed and Don at fly fishing shows, listening to what they have to say, seeing the vials of midges that Don had pumped from the stomachs of trout, looking closely at the midges under magnification, and reading this book brings it all together. The patterns are real. They are easy to tie. The materials are cheap. When you read this book, sit back and take it all in you realize that most of the mystery is gone. It gives you the tools with which to master this art. You gain an appreciation for the patterns and why they work. This is not a pretty fly book. This is a real working fishermans reference. You have the results of 20 plus years of two masters trials and errors of fishing midges. A must have for a fly fisherman.
Midge Matching.......2001-12-27
This book is essentially a pattern book. Little if any information is given about actually fishing midge patterns. In fact, the author spends a great deal of time telling you that he doesn't know much about the process anyway.
The real point of the book is that fishing midges requires exact matching of midge patterns to current stream conditions. That is, sample the midge larva in the stream (little attention is payed to dry patterns), examine them microscopically, and tie up a matching fly using the included patterns. Little, if any, entomoligical data is given in the book.
The patterns are interesting, though, and the many photos of midges quite good (photography is hobby of the author and an entire chapter is devoted to taking photos of these creatures) although, again, with no entomological data on what is being photographed. Don't look to this book for many tips or "magic" solutions that will help you catch fish.

Some of the smallest aquatic insects figure prominently into the diets of the biggest, most elusive trout; the midge is such an insect. Fishing these tiny flies--whether as nymphs or dries--requires fine tippets and skilled casts. Fishing the Midge was welcomed by a small, dedicated following of midge fly-fishers when it debuted in 1972; since then it has become a classic, and a whole new school of fly-fishing has grown up around it. The revised edition includes updated information for tying and fishing midge (and related) patterns.
Book Description
This classic gives the best treatment on midges small flies and light tackle as well as advice on tools and techniques, tackle selection, and fishing tactics. Patterns include the Wet Black Ant, Grizzly Hankle Yellow, and the Little Olive. For dedicated anglers who enjoy the challenge and excitement of fishing with midges.

Customer Reviews:
Nick B. Herberger.......2007-08-02
I think this book "hit it out of the park" when it comes to giving it's readers a ton of information about the freshman year experience. The author's had an insiders perspective as students in the midst of it and do a great job recounting their experiences and drawing from those experiences practical applications for all.
The freshman year in college is a big deal, a HUGE deal ... it is a transition that few parents and students are prepared for -- what I refer to as "The Perfect Storm". After working on campus in Student Life for many years I have seen how difficult this transition is first-hand. The Department of Education has shown that more that 1/3 of all new freshman will drop out before making it to their sophomore year and fewer than half of all new freshman will graduate from college.
"Navigating Your Freshman Year" gives us some great "real-life" advice on how to weather the storm known as the Freshman Year in college!

college life begins with The Freshman 40: everything you need to know about your first 40 days in college
Great gift from mom!.......2006-01-26
My mom got this book for me, so of course, I ignored it for a while. But then I actually picked it up and thought it was really helpful - some points the student authors make I didn't think about and I think will help me act like less of a dork when I am off to college in the fall.
Finally!.......2005-05-05
Finally, someone wrote a book about freshman year of college that is worth reading. It really covers all angles from academics to partying to roommates, etc. But what really works are all the quotes and stories by actual students mixed in. Every high school senior should read this.

This instructional book approaches the figure organically, showing readers how to observe its basic shapes and subtle nuances through practical exercises and lessons in the art of seeing with a painter's eye.
Step-by-step demonstrations in contour drawing teach how to capture the overall essence of the human form, then lessons in gesture drawing emphasize the body's linear rhythms in various poses. Painting techniques progress from silhouette to three-dimensional forms through clever uses of light, shadow, color, and value.

Simply the best instruction book on watercolor.......2007-03-20
If you like Mr. Reid work, then you'll love this one. If you have one book

The spontaneity usually associated with watercolor is an illusion, and this
book with simple exercise will help you control this medium, and help you
cause accident that others call spontaneity.
