It really works!.......2001-07-19
A colleague of mine read this book as part of his MPA graduate program and found the methodology simple yet powerful. The book provides a graphical way of organizing employee complaints and laments into a logical structure that shows how most "problems" are actually symptoms of a few root issues that need to be addressed to effect lasting change.
I went to this book once it became clear that one of my "IT consulting" projects actually needed to turn into an "organizational change" project. We mapped out the problems on large butcher paper and used it in a working session with senior managers. They quickly grasped the key issues and focused in on identifying productive solutions -- no time wasted while each manager expounded on his/her view on the real issues, b/c it was all there in black/white/red/yellow etc. Highly recommend it for all change management agents.

Micrographia is a large book, measuring almost twelve inches tall and weighing three pounds. It was printed in October 1664, and when bound copies appeared on sale the following year it became an instant bestseller. Most people cannot relish the crisp printing and the fine paper of an original issue, and this digital edition brings the look of the first edition truly into the public domain. We can marvel at the clarity of the prose, and the vividness of the pictures. Many of the plates (like that of the stinging nettle, for example, and the louse) have a clarity not regained until the era of the electron microscope. It is hard to believe these are the images from a pioneer who flourished three and a half centuries ago.

Hooke's greatest work documents a superbly curious mind at the height of its powers. The official experimenter of the Royal Society had his hand in most of the significant projects of the early sci. rev. but it is in microscopy that he made his biggest mark with these drawings made from his own observations. There is something exhilerating for all of those who prefer the small and exquisite over the cosmic and grandiose in Hooke's advertisement for the beauty of the fly.
His other observations ranging from the nature of sparks to gravity catch his lively intellect on the wing. It is a pity that Dover did not make this book either prettier to look at or quite a lot cheaper. The cover is appalling and the reproductions of the text and plates below scratch. A general introduction might have been welcome too; a treatment of Hooke the eternal puzzler and artist rather than the controversial crank who squabbled famously with Newton and Huygens over priority issues( the latter tediously covered in the new Jardine book which should be avoided). Still, it is nice to have this great book in print.

Images impossibly small.......2007-06-13
I was very excited to receive a copy of Hooke's Micrographia. Hooke was one of the most brilliant 17th century scientists, and would be better known were it not for being overshadowed by Newton (with whom he constantly feuded). His Micrographia describes his observations through the microscope and telescope.
However in this Bibliobazaar edition, the plates are reproduced in such small size that they are impossible to see. For example, Schematic VI has 10 geometrical figures on it - it is reproduced in an image 1 1/2inch by 2 1/4 inch!
Do not buy this book.

A quick and easy read. Clearly describes and illustrates all the skills necessary to begin surfing. I recommend it for young and old surfers.
Only for the ABSOLUTE beginner.......2004-02-19
I had been surfing for about six or eight months regularly before I bought this book. Thus, there was almost nothing that helpful in here for me; I already knew how to paddle out, pop up, what kind of conditions to look for and which to avoid, I'd already boughten an appropriate board. Nothing in the book mentions more advanced/intermediate tips I was looking for like how to turn/carve, or technical aspects on differences between boards.
That said, this book would be good fot total beginners who have not tried surfing yet and just want to be sure of the facts and basics. Many of these things you will pick up intuitively, but some of it will not automatically come naturally, thus the book is good to prevent/check bad habits, create good ones-- i.e. don't look down when you ride a wave, arch your back when you pop up, etc.
mediocre at best.......2004-01-17
As a long-time climber who finally learned to surf this past year, I naturally assumed there would be a surplus of good instructional/reference books on the market for beginning surfers, like John Long's "How to Rock Climb" series serves for climbers. There aren't. This is one of the few I found, and I supposed it's better than the competition, but that's not saying much.
Surfing is less a technical and more of an intuitive type of sport. That said, there are plenty of technical aspects to it, and this book continually falls short in explaining or even mentioning many of them. The chapter on "paddling out," for instance, doesn't even mention duck-diving or turtle-rolling to get outside the wave break, let along teach them. These aren't easy things to do on a big, fat beginner's board, but at some point every surfer will need to learn how to get outside efficiently. A surfing instruction book should give you some hint here, but I had to go searching on the web to find step-by-step instructions because whatever I was doing wasn't working right and this tome is worthless as a reference book after you've been out 2 or 3 times.
Another example: the book recommends you get a "big" board. No explanation of the different types of beginner-appropriate boards (longboards, eggs, hybrids) vs intermediate-appropriate boards (shortboards, fish, etc). No description of the impact of different board parameters (rocker angles, nose and tail shapes, thickness) have on how a board handles surf; you're just told it's too complex for you to understand so don't bother to ask.
In any sport, you really need some basic instruction from someone who knows what they're doing to really get going. An instructional book should be there to help you remember and make sense of everything afterward, at night when you're not out there practicing. This book doesn't meet those criteria very well.
Best Beginner Book I've Seen.......2004-01-15
Having never surfed, I was in the market for a very simple book to explain some of the basics before I actually got into the waves. This book fit that bill perfectly. It gave very simple lessons about how to start the sport--the necessary equipment, where to surf, how to actually get on your board and a little history of the sport. It didn't rely on surfer lingo that muddles everything up for beginners who are not yet in the know and had a number of excellent photographs to visually capture what the words were trying to say. It is very well written for someone who does not have experience and I think it is a fantastic teaching tool. I would highly recommend this book for all beginners or parents of beginners who just want to have an idea of what their child is getting into. I can't wait to put these lessons into practice.
Incredibly poor binding from the publisher.......2003-09-02
The book is basic, and not badly written; friendly and clear advice and instruction for the would-be surfer, but it's a slim volume-and here's the rub (and the reason for only 2 stars): the binding of this trade paperback was the worst I've seen in quite a while-it fell apart after one read-through, with whole handfuls of the sewn-in pages cascading to the floor. Most defintely NOT what you'd want in any how-to book.

I found this phrase book a very useful tool. It is ideal for someone going abroad or working in a community setting. Also the romanized form is a good starting point for people initially learning the language.
I have purchased two of these books as gifts and both recipients have spoken highly of it.

This book was primarily written as an aid for teaching non-urdu speakers in a classroom environment. The writer (my father, btw) has taught urdu to foreigners for 25+ years. He is working on a new edition for this book which will be much more comprehensive and a stand alone book rather than an aid for teaching in class. I just thought this info. might be helpful.

I bought this book to help my daughter improve her Urdu reading speed and indeed this book was helpful in that regard. Simple explanations and clearly printed script make this book an ideal supplement for Urdu beginners... Go for it!

I bought this book in hopes that it would teach urdu in a phonetic manner, however it teaches urdu based on learning the script first and foremost. This is a good book, however, if you are interested in learning the urdu script.

Where'd my special K go?.......2003-05-26
One of the things I hate and find irritating about this book is its complete lack of utilizing the color black. In fact, of all the hundreds of color combinations contained in this little book, the color black (K) is completely missing. And that, contrary to what some people might think, is an extremely important color in CMYK printing. It also lists all color combos in YMC order, which I've never seen before in any color book. It gets very confusing when trying to input the values into any program, as they are all set up to take CMYK in that order. But you don't have to worry about getting the K value--the authors just left it out. Quite unforgivable. I also found the color combos shown here to be extremely UN-complementary. I've had more than one client tell me, after showing them a couple of designs using these color combos, that the schema looked "awful" or just plain "ugly." I did too, but since my confidence in color coordination is not that high, I needed second opinions. Which I got. So I put it on the back shelf and let it gain 10%K dust in the 100%K recesses where I hope to never find or use it again. There are just too many books out there that are simply better.
A good guide of color combinations.......2001-07-23
Very good, if not thorough, color reference, with very good color combinations (color charts are included as well). Perhaps a bigger variety of "moods" or "styles" (as the combinations are classified) could have made this book more of a definitive reference.
The prose that accompanies each chapter and tries to bring some rationality to the choices of colors and explain the creation of new combinations is somewhat shallow, and I found it quite confusing for the use of terms left unexplained, and a somewhat clunky translation from the Japanese.
Colors matched.......2000-05-13
This is a very useful designers reference book. I wish that they've listed the colors in the order of C-M-Y-K instead of Y-M-C-K, it gets confusing when I want to plug in the numbers to my color palette. Timeless color combinations. Very useful even in the year 2000, even though it has been almost ten years since it got published. Pantone combinations would be helpful for next publications (if they haven't done it yet) Thanks for your guidance when I get stuck with no creative color ideas.
