This purchase was a complete waste. Seller did not disclose that he was selling an outdated edition. I had to purchase a replacement from the publisher. I would give no star, except that this menu won't continue unless I give at least a one-star rating.

In the midst of a US Presidential election, with the economy playing a major role, you can hear much todo about downsizing and offshoring. For a different take, try this book. Lee discusses not the US, but Taiwan. And over the period from the 1980s to the 1990s. Unlike current American ruminations about outsourcing Information Technology and call centres to India, this book mostly discusses manufacturing jobs that vanished in Taiwan. Over the period in the book, software and cheap communications were not a factor in the changes.

The book focuses also on female workers and their travails when laid off. The Taiwan manufacturing base of the 1970s and 1980s provided many with their first cash incomes and a means of entering a modern and relatively cosmopolitan lifestyle. At least, compared to a typical earlier alternative of subsistence farming.

Lee discusses whether the meaning of work changed, and if there was actually a diminishing of the work ethic, as remarked by some commentators of the time. The book gives a good view of Taiwanese society, and how it coped with massive change.

One of the best sailing books I've read. I sure wish he'd write more!

Dream of a lifetime, an honest look.......2001-02-06

Both of these books ("Blown Away" and "You Can't Blow Home Again") are great and should be read one after the other (The second is the continuing saga). The true story of a family that sells everything to buy a boat and sail around the world. They only make it as far as the south pacific, but it makes for year after year of adventures. As a sailor myself (coastal, not blue water) I felt he did a great job of capturing the sharp contrast between the elation, exhilaration and sheer terror that can be found in sailing. Mr. Payson's honest, care free and "oh well" attitude is something that I wish I could capture for myself. Someone who does not mind laughing at himself.

I only have one critique of the books. Mr. Payson uses nautical terms and the names of boat parts as if they are a part of everyone's daily vocabulary. I sail a simple sloop configuration and can name every component that is applicable to our boat. But his repeated use of terms unique to multi-masted, wooden masted, bow-sprinted boats kept sending me to the nautical dictionary. Since the book does not appear to be targeted at highly experienced sailors, a little more explanation would have been nice.

Sail Away to the South Pacific.......2000-09-27

With Herb Payson and his wife and stepson as they begin the vacation of a lifetime. Payson is a witty, experienced sailor who writes about his family's adventures while sailing in the South Pacific onboard their 36 ft. wooden ketch, Sea Foam. Their journey begins as a necessity, but soon becomes an adventure with a few sailing lessons and detours thrown in. Payson's writing style is simple, funny, informative and addictive. Anyone who dreams of a cruising life should read this book. Anyone who has never even seen a sailboat would love the self-effacing humor of Payson and the beautiful descriptive narratives of the islands they visit and the genuine appreciation he has of the local people who live there.

This book is one that will leave you wanting to read more of Payson's sea adventures.

Caveat emptor: Any traveler to France who actually says to the customs agent Bien sur, soyez le bienvenu pour reduire ma valise en miettes. Heureusement ce ne sont que des valises moches de Louis Vuitton! (Of course you're welcome to tear my suitcase apart. Lucky they're only these tacky Louis Vuitton bags!) is likely to find him or herself detained at the customs desk for a nice, long spell. Likewise, responding to a waiter's suggestion with Je reserve la lamproie a la bordelaise pour un occasion speciale (I'm saving a stew of blood-sucking eels for a very special occasion.) just about guarantees bad service. In other words, the French you'll learn from Wicked French for Travelers is probably best enjoyed at home before you go.

Like Henry Beard's French for Cats this slim volume is meant to amuse more than educate. Surely you wouldn't really expect some Parisian beauty to respond to a pick-up line like Comment vous appelez-vous, mon bijou de trente-six carats? (What is your name, my jewel of thirty-six carats?) or hope to make it out of a post office alive after demanding of the clerk if he has a porcupine stuck up his rear end (avez-vous un porc-epic coince entre les fesses?). Our advice: Read Wicked French and have a good laugh before you go--but take a different phrase book with you on your trip.

I did enjoy this book.Its not really something you would take with you on a holiday to France.Its more of a good humour book.Its really a novelty book.Plenty of phrases here to learn and laugh over.It even shows you how to pronounce each phrase.Thats a good thing you wont find in many books.For the money its a bargain.Makes an ideal giftAnd,Its a good laugh.

Very funny - not meant to be taken seriously.......2003-06-11

I hope everyone realizes that this book is not actually meant to be used in France. I mean, there may be a rare occasion or two where you might actually be able to put it into practice, but for the most part I wouldn't recommend it. Some of the phrases are extremely insulting or are exaggerated for comic effect. What I mean is that French people don't really go around saying that the wine they're drinking has "wrinkled buttocks." The entire series of "Wicked" books is, in my opinion, one big tongue-in-cheek kind of joke. They work best for people who have been to these countries and/or have familiarity with some of the customs and thus can appreciate the humor. They're tiny, fun, and cheap; I've had mine for years and I still thumb through them from time to time for a quick laugh. Howard Tomb and the illustrator, Jared Lee, have more than a touch of comic genius.

Now we know why the French think Jerry Lewis is a genius........1999-06-17

The best thing about this small but very potent book is flexibility. Not only does it allow a tourist a limited linguistic advantage but it also provides valuable insight as a cultural tool. While this book may help explain why the French think of Jerry Lewis as a comic genius, it doesn't excuse it.

This is a funny book for any of you who have been to france or studied thier current culture. Otherwise, you may not understand what this author is joking about French people in the book. Also, I recomend this book for those who are studing french and for those who are planning to go there to "turn the tables" on the french people.

Beautiful.......2006-08-04

This book offers beautiful examples of skies and clouds rendered in watercolor. It is worth keeping on the coffee-table just to look at and enjoy. In addition, it provides useful instruction, showing some of the techniques used to make some of the paintings. As indicated in the title, the techniques relate almost exclusively to watercolor, though the paintings themselves will inspire painters who use other media. This is a fine book.
