The Making of the Fittest: DNA and the Ultimate Forensic Record of Evolution

Book Description
From the moment it first began to contemplate the world, three questions have occupied the human mind: Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? Artists (notably Paul Gauguin), religious thinkers, philosophers, and most recently scientists have all searched for answers. Here, the authors describe how scientists decipher human origin from the record encrypted in the DNA and protein molecules. After explaining the nature of descent and the methods available for studying genealogical relationships, they summarize the information revealed by the molecular archives about the Tree of Life and our location on one of its branches. The knowledge thus gleaned allows them to draw conclusions about our identity, our place in the living world, our future, and the ethical implications of the changed perspective.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating book........2007-09-12
This is a wonderful book on the fascinating subject of human origins and evolution written by two experts in the field. It is a journey though many aspects of evolutionary biology but focusing on the mind-boggling developments in molecular biology. A rare and refreshing qualily of the book is that the authors try always to give a balanced and critical discussion of the hypothesis at stake, their strenghts and weaknesses.
Some parts of the book are quite technical but worth the effort. In any case, one should praise the authors for their courage in trying to explain some of the complex science and mathematics involved in the field. Though this inevitably has shortcomings, it is infinitely better than the usual path of oversimplification and white-washing, fashionable in many science books nowadays.
This should be the most widely read book on human evolution.......2005-11-13
Klein and Takahata present a very readable account of the hard science and mathematics that underlies what Nobel laureate James D. Watson, co-discoverer of the molecular structure of DNA, has come to refer to as the "law of evolution". The title of the book comes from the Gauguin painting "Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?" As pointed out in the text, science has essentially answered the first question.
Although popular books meant for a lay audience abound in the literature, and are often quite well written, they shy away from the rigorous underpinnings of modern Darwinian evolutionary theory. Klein and Takahata give the reader the details needed for an understanding of human evolution that goes beyond mere storytelling. They assume knowledge of mathematics and biology that we all were supposed to have learned in high school, and develop the remaining background in the course of the text. As a consequence, if you learn nothing else by reading this book, you'll learn some math and molecular biology that apply to things other than evolution. Hopefully, however, you'll come to understand that evolution is a fact which can't be invalidated by legal argument or religious sophistry, including the current shibboleth of "intelligent design."
human evolution explanation at its best.......2003-03-02
This is simply the best book i've found on human evolution. The subtitle is "The Molecular Evidence for Human Descent", don't be put off if you don't have a degree in biochemistry. Unlike most other technical and scientifically sophisticated books, in this one, the author holds your hand. He does it very well, introducing binominal and poisson distribution analysis both in the text and in appendices, for example. You are aware of his careful setting up the pieces that you need in order to understand the take home message of each chapter, and you are grateful, even if you already know the material, for the 'nice' way he does it. I finished the book wishing he would rewrite many biology and engineering textbooks i have been subjected to over the years by authors who assumed if you didn't know exactly what you were reading, then you shouldn't have bought and tried to read his book in the first place. For this characteristic alone the book is deeply and joyfully to be praised.
I am aware of the divisive character of the debate on human origins, this book will not settle it. But it will be a book that can be recommended to bring your reasonable intelligent but somewhat scientifically ignorant friend up to speed on the issues from a unabashed secular scientific viewpoint. It will, i would hope, set a standard for introductory books in the field. For if it can get a hearing, and even become popular then other authors will be forced to help people understand their arguments by giving them the tools to analyze and understand their positions, not just assume them. Now this doesn't negate the need to do your homework in order to be a serious student in any field, many things will take lots of reading to get the basis for advanced arguments. Something that will never be done in one, or even a set of books. But as the authors prove a reasonable grasp of human evolutionary arguments from a biochemical/genetic point of view is not that sophisticated of a field to require volumes, just this one.
Lest i miss an important issue, i would like to state that the author, like most secular scientific people makes the mistake of drawing metaphysical conclusions from scientific data. This i belief to be the problem of scientism, the unjustified extension of method-science into metaphysics or religion. The authors would certainly disagree with me. In any case, their philosophic position is clearly stated, open and presented in a manner that is not belittling of a religious prespective. So even if you are a theist i believe that there is much to be gained from reading this book, don't let the scientism put you off.
thanks for reading this review, and please get the book, it is certainly a most important topic, whether you agree with evolutionary analysis or not, you must be informed.

A splendid book.......2002-04-22
This is a super-ambitious, yet superbly-done account of life on earth from the first primitive creatures down to you and me. It's quite technical, but as lucid as possible. And the equations, diagrams, and tables are interspersed with fascinating asides, such as full explication of the the Gaugin masterpiece that provides the title and cover picture. It also offers in passing the most interesting interpretation of the Garden of Eden and the serpent's offer from Genesis that I've ever read.

Unprejudiced historical insight.......2007-07-26
What I mean by the title I have given this review is that much of history described now-days is in terms of the history of peoples thoughts. There is a dogma in a lot of historical presentation that all people are the same and that the history of thought is all that matters. In short, most of modern history is from an existentialist point of view. Mr del Giorgio has written this history unprejudiced by this dogma.
The premise of J. F. del Giorgio is that different peoples do have different preponderances of traits that give rise to different cultures. In other words, who people are, does matter, different types of people make different sorts of choices, and the culture and history emerges from people. This results in a very different view of history from those that presume that history is simply a result of different choices that people make.
As a result, I believe that Mr del Giorgio's work is likely an accurate view history. As well he is a very good writer and the book is a pleasure to read.
For those that may dismiss Mr del Giorgio's work, I would like to point out that the only true existentialists are psychopaths!
Fascination + erudition.......2006-11-12
Exciting the book of Jofe Del Giorgio (although I am afraid that it will give wings to the pretensions of independence of the Spanish Basques, with which I do not sympathize of any form). In particular, he quotes as example of erudition Sabino Arana, obviating his numerous offenses on the most elementary political and intellectual decency. But good, I suppose that that does not exclude the possibility of his anthropological erudition. Neither Celine or Heidegger have impeccable curricula.
Jofe starts by gaining himself the sympathies of all the readers of "Asterix" insinuating the possibility that that fistful of " unyielding Gauls " was, actually, a group of Basques (in fact, all the Celtic groups - between them, the Gauls - would be related with them). And not only that: such it seems that the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Aeneid are based on the exploits of the same ethnic, most ancient group of Europe (between 5.000 and 40.000 years). Neither it is doubt that D'Artagnan was a Basque (gascón). And Cyrano de Bergerac, of course.
But I hurry to make a point. Although I am radically an anti-male chauvinist, I assume the values of the feminism as been opposed against the boor, coarse and inconsiderate imposition of the masculine values. And I must point out that it would never assume the "Dark Reverse" of the machismo. That is to say, an equally unjust imposition of the values, rights and privileges of the woman. And of the work of Jofe it seems to be inferred that the situation was this in the world "euzco", pre-Aryan.
Neither I would like to live in a world as that one. We might even venture a dialectical interpretation, according to which the current machismo would be the "antithesis" of a previous feminist dictatorship. And this would allow us to dream of one -I hope, pretty close- synthesis of balance. I point out also that the network of speculations Del Giorgio is very well woven. None of them seems to be planned lightly, they all sound coherent and consistent (amen of fascinating).
I'm looking forward for the next Del Giorgio's book.
When God was a Woman.......2006-07-13
This is a splendid piece of research combining all kind of sources to offer a plausible explanation to questions that remained unsolved, until now. A book full of answers for those who wonder how was the world like when God was a woman, and men adored Her.
Time, History, Literature, Linguistics, archeological sites and DNA findings serve the author to take the reader, in a humorous and daring manner, through unsuspected paths enlightening the odd nexus between such unlike characters such as James Bond, Vikings and today's Basques. A finely polished amalgam of theories and research!

Excellent source of information.......2006-06-28
This book deals with history and miths in a serious and at the same time, entertaining way. I enjoyed it very much. It makes you want to know more about the theme, and thankfully it has a very ample further readings section.
I hope to read more books from this author.
Interesting history of women and European culture.......2006-05-28
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (5/06)
Author J. F. del Giorgio has written a fascinating book that addresses the origins of the European culture. In great depth, he discusses how women had strong roles early on. Women inherited, men took on their mother's names and kings were chosen by whom the daughter of the king married, not the son.
The Basques were a female structured society. Del Giorgio
discusses the genetic and cultural ties between Basques, Irish, Scots, Welsh, Celts, Scandinavians, Etruscans, and Pelasgians. Gene mapping shows how the Basques have spread out into other cultures.
An understanding of word and name origins shows how ancient cultures influenced and infiltrated others. As the Indo-European culture invaded Europe, women actually began losing their status. During the time that women had great power in the European culture, in other parts of the world they had diminished status and in many cases still do today.
A shocking example of this is demonstrated in India today. In some
areas, when a man dies his widow is burned to death because she is seen as having no value without him.
The book also covers an interesting discussion about how pagans and how some of their cultural traditions were carried over into Christian ones. The pagan Candlemas became the Christian Christmas. Del Giorgio
believes that in some cultures sacrifice and cannibalism still are practiced today. Hallucinogens continue to be used in ritual. Mushrooms are usually used. Today, there is a village in India where women are induced into hallucinogenic states by being bitten
by cobras. Some die from this.
I found this book to be very interesting and informative. It is obvious that a great deal of research went into writing it. It is impossible to discuss everything that is covered in it because there
is so much. After reading "The Oldest Europeans," it is good to keep as a reference book to refer back to.
I recommend this book to people that are interested in their European ancestry, women's issues or students of ancient history. You will find it fascinating.

Indescribable.......2001-08-19
Finnell's entry in the Great American Long Poem Contest is unlike any other I can think of. The individual sections skitter and swoop over great realms of aesthetic, personal, and historical territory, and the tone ranges from hilarity to wistfulness. In the guise of a meditation on Gauguin's strange allegorical painting, Finnell offers an indescribable mixture of family history, dream vision, artistic rumination, and slanted autobiography--all turning on and returning to the questions posed by Gauguin's title: "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" These huge questions fairly beg for solemnity and bardic posturing, but Finnell addresses them with consummately sly and strange offhandedness. Overall, his imagination is so odd, his sensibility so charming, his diction so fresh and capacious that it's easy to get lost in this book-and even easier to enjoy it.

Second Edition is great.......2002-03-12
Loaded with up-to-date records and statistics, this second edition of the bucks and bulls record book is a great tool and an interesting read. It doesn't matter if you live in the eastern U.S., South or Midwest, you don't have to have mule deer and elk in your state in order to appreciate this book. If you love to hunt big game, buy this book.
COLORADO'S BIGGEST BUCKS AND BULLS, Second Edition.......2002-03-12
I love this book because of all the photos and detailed hunting stories. The book is easy to read because the type is big.
Shakopee Shares Its View.......2002-03-04
This book is amazing! I'd recommend it. Some folks might be happy simply looking at the tons of photos of big deer and elk, but I am amazed at the historical information and statistics. Very impressive. And it's a good read for anyone who is interested in Colorado's biggest bucks and bulls.
Colorado's Biggest Bucks and Bulls, Second Edition.......2002-03-03
The second edition includes hundreds of photographs and stories of Boone and Crockett trophies taken in Colorado. In addition, the historical photographs of Colorado's hunting heritage are extremely interesting. This book is a must for the Colorado hunter, as it tells exactly where many of Colorado's trophies were taken, by whom, and how.

i think this book

excellent beginner instruction.......2001-09-21
This video is excellent for beginners in that the instructor is very clear about the movements and also uses two "students"from a rear view,in order to better ,still, understand the postures.
The only disappointment is that after the steps are individually learned, they are not shown together in a "dance"(for lack of a better word)that one can do along WITH the instructor, nor is the meaning of each movement given, which is a very important part of the Tai Chi.
A Major Disappointment.......2000-07-17
This book is mis-leading. In describing Tai Chi movements the pictures disagree with the written text..."foot directly below the shoulder" and it isn't in the photograph. There are more such discrepancies. The analogies may be common to the writer but confusing to this reader..."sand pouring down your leg". There is a large and growing number of Tai Chi manuals. It's too bad publications like this sound so good and read so poorly.
Very clear, easy to follow........1999-05-13
This book is excellent for the beginner. The descriptions are very clear, and the photographs are easy to see. I had no problem understanding exactly what Ms. Hooton was talking about.

Ellénika mou..........2001-02-09
Riding on the waves of inspiration and dreams of Kefalloniá, I purchased the book and tape set. Like other reviewers, I found that the conversations are recorded by native speakers who run their words together; this is helpful, as it gives a true-to-life pronunciation of the speakers a foreigner would encounter. I also found it helpful that the language is printed in arabic and the Greek alphabet is introduced slowly. I strongly recommend for those in pursuit of a grammatical exactitude, a supplementary grammatical text. On the whole, this text and its tapes are truly excellent...and a bargain!
Don't buy just this book.......2000-01-04
This course focuses on developing conversational skills. The most valuable part of this course is that most of the dialogues you listen to are recordings from the streets of Greece. Most courses use studio recorded audio to teach you a language and this method does not realistically reflect how native Greek speakers truncate words, run words together, do not enunciate every word and speak fairly quickly. Listening to these dialogues will give you a more realistic idea of how people will speak when you reach Greece.
Because the book is conversation oriented, they do not emphasize the alphabet and you should buy another book to help you practice your reading skills.
One chapter (out of 15) focuses on the future tense and one on the past tense. This short introduction will not adequately prepare you to fluently use the future and past tense, but will at least expose you to the underlying concepts.
Points of grammar are introduced when they occur in a conversation and you must use the book for the explanation of grammar points.
Bottom line: Use another book, such as the Teach Yourself Greek or the Colloquial Greek (with audio) if your goal is fluency in the language. Get another course such as Greek in 7 Days (same publisher - passport books) to give you a conversational course where the audio is slow and controlled. Use this book either in conjunction with the Greek in 7 Days or afterwards if you are having trouble understanding Greek when it is spoken to you. This is where the strength of this book lies: getting you used to hearing Greek spoken outside a studio.
Far superior to FSI or Berlitz to teach understandable Greek.......1999-02-08
Kalimera! I purchased the Just Listen 'n Learn Greek with two tapes and a book. After studying through with the Passport Books program I have a great handle on Greek. In fact, my Greek associate understands EVERY phrase I speak to him in Greek. At 54 years of age I was skeptical about effectively learning a new language. The Passport Book system is outstanding for ALL ages! (I also just purchased a LANGUAGE/30 Revised & Expanded Edition Greek program and it is BY FAR inferior. If I would have chosen this program first I would have undoubtedly failed at my attempts to learn the Greek language.) Now, however, I am returning to the Passport Books program and will master the language as far as these tapes and book will take me. You MUST continue on ... and I would love to see an advanced or continued program to follow the Just Listen 'n Learn Greek Basic Course to Succeeding in Greek and Communicating with Confidence. Congratulations on a job fabulously done. AND, for Amazon.com ... it would behoove you to HIGHLY RECOMMEND this program to folks that inquire about the most effective resource for getting a handle on the Greek language as spoken by the people, quickly. I WISH I would have had that information before. With the confusion in government it is no wonder they recommend other systems to teach a language that are a COMPLETE waste of money and certainly time! To Brian Hill and to Amazon.com I say, "Efharisto poli!"

Customer Reviews:
This is a catalog.......2007-04-19
This book is a collection of Tiki art from a sunny tropical art exhibit to smashingly hit foggy San Francisco. An amazing turn out was observed that night, where the crowds were spilling into the streets, and there was a line of people waiting for people to exit before they could be let in. There is a variety of levels of art in this book, where all aspire to share their love for the Tiki God. There are no Johnny come latelys to join the love of tropical drinks, tropical breezes and a Tiki God to admire. This is a good book to complete your collection of Tiki books.
Great book!.......2004-12-17
Otto is no johnny-come-lately trying to profit off the Tiki craze--he sparked the Tiki revival 10 years ago, when he started "Tiki News." Many of us first learned that others were also into Tiki from that publication, which also introduced us to the Tiki work of Shag and others.
This is a great survey of newer Tiki art and is highly recommended.
A little better than a magazine.......2004-12-08
This is a small book. I expected more and have to say I was very dissapointed. While there is some good art from some good artists in this book, there is alot of amateur tiki art that is not worthy and you have to wonder why it is even in the book. What is the criteria for the tiki art in this book? There seems to be none, and frankly this book seems like a weak attempt to profit off the latest tiki craze. I do not recommend it to anyone. Compared to the other tiki books in my collection, this book leaves you very flat.
